Little is known about the Houkyaku clan, though their history is far from ordinary.
A long time ago, many years in the past there was warring among the Northern clans. Every able bodied man and woman would be called forth and forced to choose a side. With a weapon in hand, they would fight family, friends and neighbours alike. It was a bloody battle with no end in sight.
However, amongst this chaos there was a clan who sought to run away from these fighting. Following the scars of battle, they would journey to places where the fighting had yet to touch, keeping well out of the way of the wars reach as it swept across the lands like a pandemic.
But this way of living had its limits. After the first couple years, they ran out of places to run, which left them with one remaining option: Cross the river and head to the mountains in the north. Such rugged and hazardous terrain, they would not dare bring the armies that far up just to have them knocked back down again in a misinterpreted avalanche.
So, late one night, when the war’s back had been turned, these people ran for the river, reaching its banks just as they had been discovered. But on the make shift raft, they made it safely across with the stench of battle, nipping at their heels. Once on the other side, they continued up the base of the mountain, knowing that a river was hardly enough to stop these people from finding them.
Now, for a while they were fine up here away from the chaos of the rest of civilisation. But come winter time, things started to change. It grew cold….very cold. So cold in fact, that people were getting sick and one had died. Fires and blankets, they were not enough in these lands, so the members of this clan had to come up with something else to keep them warm. And that was when they started to develop a technique that would warm them up from the inside, so they would not have to worry about the blankets and the over use of fires.
Most of the clan approved of this idea, saying that it was a good idea and took to aid in mastering it…but there were others that thought it was too dangerous. That this technique would lead to their downfall. Heating up the internal organs, making it a constant heating device….well there was so many things that could go wrong, it was simply too dangerous.
And then….the fighting finally caught up with them.
It was the indecision about the technique that caused the rift to form between these people. Where most of them were happy enough to accept this technique and move further North where it was safer… there was still that small few that made it clear that they would rather move back down to the base of the mountains and risk joining in the battles, risk their lives as opposed to partaking in this dangerous technique. And so that was where their problems started.
It was just arguments at first: Yelling, pushing, and calling each other traitors. It was only a matter of time before the threats turned in to weapons and flying fists. It would take more months of this before they finally calmed enough to reach a logical decision: One that would affect the lives of both clans forever.
And so it was decided. The leader of the clan, the council which was put in charge of maintaining the clan’s welfare and the senior members turned to these people who sought to move back down the mountain, and told them, that they were free to do so. They could leave at any time, but only under the condition that they abandon their Sotsuji heritage, and that they no longer take the name of the clan that they once belonged to and go their separate ways. They told them: that if they believed that fighting was the answer, then they no longer share in thoughts and feelings of all the others and therefore, they are not a Sotsuji. Perhaps, they never were to begin with.
The very next day, these people packed up their things and left for the villages at the base of the mountain, without so much as a goodbye or a glance back. Their new life started today.
It all started so simply. Innocently.
Despite their exile, these people still worried about their family and friends, and the technique that they had created. They still carried a concern that all they were doing would end it disaster. So the few people that didn’t resent being kicked out started to develop their own technique: A Genjutsu that would allow them to see what was happening to the other clan, making sure that they were not getting in to trouble and not threatening anyone. All while keeping their distance just as they had agreed when leaving the rest of the clan. And if there were ever a time they would need to stop this Sotsuji clan….they would know and be there before any damage could happen.
At the time, it seemed like a flawless plan….but developing a jutsu was far from easy.
It took many months, many years before they could establish a bare connection and even then it was hardly enough to get proper information. They convinced a person to come down to visit, they asked to go back up there, and none of it seemed enough to get the result they wanted.
In the end, they decided to try other ways for making the perfect connection with another’s mind. By using extensive meditation and focusing entirely on the inner mind. If you had proper control of your mind, then you could do anything.
The first thing they tried; was locking themselves in a dark room with no furniture and keeping it at the perfect temperature. With this extreme lack of outward stimuli, they could meditate for hours in complete concentration. But it was still not enough. The sounds of the world would still break through their concentration. So, they headed further towards the mountain and found caves to hideaway in. Buried with only cracks for air they would spend hours in their own mind, trying to reach out to animals….and then to people. Soon enough they were stepping in to the minds of people further and further away. But like the other clan, these people didn’t stop.
After a few years of developing the ability to step in to people’s minds; the Houkyaku clan, as they called themselves, tried to extend their mind further and further outwards. Reaching out like a hand across the village to ensnare children and adults a like. And still they wanted to go further. They needed to go further in order to reach the Sotsuji. Their solution: Make the outer world disappear a little more. Cut out the light, the sound and focus everything on the mind of others.
And that’s what they did. Three volunteers came up and they had their eyes burned out, and their ears sealed. They didn’t speak, they barely breathed. But it worked. Complete sensory deprivation and they could reach in to the strongest mind. Even the minds of their old clan…..
It was just in time.
Half of the Houkyaku clan had done the procedure which meant that half witnessed the most devastating event that they had witnessed in the North. They were happy, they were warm and from their caves, each member of the Houkyaku clan watched the Sotsuji clan burn alive, taking the once beautiful landscape with them…..it was a miracle that some survived. A miracle that these ‘Visitors’ didn’t want to happen, because as of that day…well. Some things were made very clear. These Sotsuji members were dangerous and they were not to be let down the mountain where they could harm the innocent members of below. Only they knew so only they would be responsible for keeping them in check. And it only got worse from there.
Generations passed and the stories of their clan’s duty continued on down the line in a never ending game of chinese whispers. They told of what they did, what they were capable of and how they were just to keep an eye on them and providing a warning if things got out of hand. But like every child’s game, things got confused and words got missed out….what used to be friends keeping an eye out for each other, it became a hunt.
In the end it was just as it was before. It was many years after that day and half of the surviving clan thought that once again, people were going too far with the stalking and hunting the members that desired to travel down the mountain and attempt a life with other people outside of their clan. While the other half strongly believed that this was what they were born to do…that the reason for being was to police these people and people like them.
And again, just like before, the two opposing sides split, with half staying up in the mountains to continue their life’s work, while the other broke apart, going their own way to make a new life.
Nowadays, the Houkyaku Clan is still relatively unknown with only a fraction of members showing the tell tale signs of the kekkei genkai. With their tendency to blend in with crowds and natural distrust of the world around them, it was never surprising to see no more than two members per in each village at a time.
Kekkei Genkai Description:
The members of the Houkyaku clan amongst limited circles are known for their ability to walk into the space of another ninjas mind with a fragment of their own conscious chakra. This trait has made them exceedingly sought after as scouts and sensory ninja as well as co-ordinators and potentially strong leaders. Though, as the Genjutsu technique which allows them to perform this is harmless in of itself, techniques which are able to use it due to its subtle un-offensive nature are unable to harm the targets whose minds they reside in. Instead allowing them to do such things as communicate with a ninja subtly share their senses and various other utility based techniques. Though as they can still only process the normal amount of senses a body can handle at one time, seeing or hearing something someone else sees/hears often replaces or overlaps what the user would normally see and/or hear. (Must be stated in the jutsu.)
~ Due to the clan’s mastery over Genjutsu when it comes to subtlety and intricacy, their Genjutsu can only be broken by Genjutsu dissipation technique of two ranks or higher, and other methods of escaping genjutsu are treated as if they are -1 rank weaker.
Drawbacks:
~ Mind step, and any Jutsu stemming from mind step or a created variant of this clan jutsu cannot deal any physical strain to the person’s mind or body due to the subtlety built into the very nature of the technique. (other offensive jutsu CAN be apped, but they cannot be used while the mind walker technique, or variations of this technique, is still in effect)
~ All users receives +1 damage to Tajutsu and Bukijutsu techniques
~ Users take Blind, Numb, or Deaf as a special characteristic. This cannot be balanced with a positive special characteristic.

Once the person has been affected, the user can maintain this technique for up to 200 metres before the bond is severed and the connection lost.

Description:
This technique simply allows the user to cast a strong Genjutsu which then provides an opening, or doorway of sorts, in which they can passively ‘step’ in to another’s mind and reside there for as long as the Genjutsu is in effect. Also, because of the harmless effect of this technique it is exceedingly hard to notice and even harder to break out of. And though it appears harmless at first, this jutsu strengthens the success rate for more complicated genjutsu such as the Soul Window and Mind Meld technique. The triggers for this jutsu are as follows.
Doton – The user casts a perfect circle around them on the earth in a radius which is determined by rank and strength of the specialisation. The Genjutsu is set when the opponent steps within this circle.
Fuuton – Similar to Doton, the user casts out a circle in to the air around them, in a radius that is determined by rank and strength. The opponent will be caught in this Genjutsu when they step in to this designated area and breathe in the tainted oxygen.
**As a side note: The user is unable to move around while using this jutsu on its own, unless they have another jutsu in effect which allows them to do so.
Offensive jutsu cannot be used while this technique is in effect.

Description: The user while maintaining the effects of mind walk, is able to tap into the pain receptors of the mind they are inhabiting, allowing them to take unto themselves the pain the person would otherwise feel numbing their body for the maintained duration, allowing an ally to fight on unhindered by pain.

Description:
Earth Pulse: By focusing and channelling their chakra to the ground around them, the user creates a net in which they can detect the vibrations and/or locations of moving objects through their feet and legs as they impact the earth around them.
Wind Ripple: By focusing and channelling their chakra to the air around them, the user creates a barrier of sorts which, when disturbed will send ripples through the air, back to the user, informing them of something’s presence and approximate whereabouts.
**Only one of these techniques can be used at a time. Once you have decided on using one: Then you are committed to that side of this technique until the end of the thread.

Description: Once the Mind Step Jutsu has taken affect, the user can then activate this second ability which allows them to take another step in to another person’s mind, increasing its range and potentially escaping detection before being released.
This second step, can only be activated when another person is within that initial five meters and eye contact has been made. After this step, the user can not change minds again until after the bond has been broken and the cool down has passed.
