Round Two: Fujita Ryo vs. Eitilt Bau UjMGmQZ

Located at the site of one of Konoha’s newly minted railway depots, this arena takes place atop the hustle and bustle of moving train cars. Tunnels on all sides of the arena allow trains to pass to and fro through the arena at high speeds, with each train only remaining within the battleground for a single posting round before making it necessary to jump to a new train. Chakra barrier configurations prevent contestants from leaving or entering the tunnels designed for the locomotives, and in this arena, touching the ground means disqualification.

POSTING ORDER

Ryo, to his own surprise, managed to make it past his first round. Now was the start of his second step on the path to greatness. He had the goal to prove himself to Tobetsu, the current Zenith at the Diamond Heights University in Ryo’s home village. The simple promise made by the powerful man was enough to motivate Ryo to start his climb. Ryo needed to prove himself to his new mentor, and if succeeded, he would immediately begin his lessons in the mysterious subject of Jinton Release. He thought of Kejido and Aikiko, two of his peers who ran ahead of Ryo of the shinobi highway. He was weak while his friends were getting stronger. They were moving ahead, and Ryo was frozen in place. Ryo needed to prove himself so he could break out of the cage he built around himself, and what better way was there to do that than get the first place trophy at the famous Chuunin Exams? He was determined to rise above those around and become one of the greats, and if possible, the next Zenith.

Ryo’s first round was easy, to say the least. He made one move against his opponent and won the fight by a large margin. This would be expected to impress fellow participants and spectators, but it did anything but that. In his first fight, he decided to use a jutsu that he was entirely unfamiliar with. Sure, he used it on training dummies in preparation for the fight, but he never saw the effects it had on another person until it was too late. He trapped his opponent, Xiao, in a fiery prison that burnt him so much that his costume and mask disappeared, making his face hideously scarred in the process. If that was not enough, the insurmountable pain that the boy felt made him stumble into the growing hole in the center of the arena. Sure he just committed murder, Ryo was in shock for the next few days. During this time, he argued with himself constantly, trying to decide if he should move on or not after committing something so shameful. In the end, he decided to continue his effort to climb, realizing that his opponent’s death would mean nothing if he stopped now.

And so, Ryo was facing the doors that would open and reveal his next opponent and arena in a matter of minutes. He was dressed in the same thing he wore in his last match: a white short-sleeved button-up and black slacks, along with the necessary pouches to carry his ninja tools. He was ready for whatever was beyond the doors, determined to win the match that was about to begin. The first arena had a clear gimmick that participants had to overcome, and Ryo expected nothing less from this one. The proctors that were around him stayed silent, not revealing anything about what was to come. That was until minutes later when the proctors gave him simple instructions. ”Don’t touch the ground or you’re disqualified.” Immediately after these words were spoken, the doors opened up and hands pushed Ryo out into the arena and the doors shut behind him.

The surface he stepped on was the flat top of a simple 1.6 meter wide, 4-meter long, and 3-meter tall train car. There were several of this exact car in the arena, lined up to be adjacent to one another. There were several tracks within the arena, all of which were parallel from the entry doors. Each track had about three cars on it which had a five-meter gap in between them, all of which were still. The announcer’s voice tuned in, introducing Ryo and his opponent before giving a three-second countdown. As soon as the word ‘go!’ was spoken, the train cars sparked to life. The cars on the track that Ryo was currently on moved to the left and the one in front of him moved to the right. This pattern continued all the way to the doors on the other side of the arena. One the walls to the left and right, there were several tunnels that lined up with the tracks, and once a train went through, another train came out at the opposite side. Were they really going to fight on moving trains?

Ryo assumed that the tunnels along the sides also counted as the boundaries, which meant that he could not ride a train through them. This meant that he had to jump from train to train through the fight. He managed to jump five tracks ahead of where he started, ending up on a train car that was moving to the right. He suddenly had an idea, which he, after little thought, decided was good enough to act on. He quickly formed a series of hand seals. Upon finishing, a two meter by two meter square from the earth rose up three meters in front of the train car Ryo was standing on. This not only completely ruined the track but also caused the train car Ryo was on to immediately stop one it the new wall. This sudden stop caused the train moving behind the one Ryo was on to also stop, along with the one behind that one. The row of trains Ryo was on was now completely still, making a 1.6 meter wide and 12-meter wide platform for him to stand on. Now, he did not have to worry about jumping trains, and could just wait as his opponent approached him.

Bau would walk forward with his sandals clacking across the floor. Even hunched over he was a big man almost filling the hallway. He didn't care much for showing his size to those around him but still he was big. His blonde or rather platinum hair would shift as they opened the door and what he assumed was a cold breeze hit him. A slight ruffle and little more. His long green shirt and baggy green pants would barely shift. Nor would his long black cloak with checkered patterns along the bottom. His green and white striped Hat now had a strap holding it to his head like a headband. After all having your hat fly away for no reason wasn't much fun. His sword was still peace tied to his hip of course. Tied in such a way that even he would have to put in effort to draw it. Less of a functioning weapon and more his remaining memory of his old life before this place. Of the blood he had spilled in wars for territory and sometimes less. Now he was getting paid to fight at least. Not to kill but simply to challenge the youth. Not to mention he was getting paid.

Still the doors would open and idly he was informed of the rules. The people paying him liked him just fine but those running the show more directly didn't seem to care for a dirty hobo ruining the experience for the kids. Still the main one being not to touch the ground was interesting. Either way he knew his role here. Fight to win if he could but fight all the same. With his staff over one shoulder he would hop out of the double doors on top of a train car and glance around. He had only seen these lately. Trains. What a fascinating contraption. Still it would appear he had been dropped off on a train car on the opposite end from another young boy. Kids and their chakra being used as soldiers. In his homeland they killed leaders for using children like this. But he was not in the mood for killing and breaking his oath. Instead he would nod to the kid before undoing his cloak. Idly he would focus five chakra into it for a substitution technique before hanging it on a part of the train he was standing on like a hanger. Tightly holding it so the wind rushing by wouldn't take it.

He had noted that this would likely be a moving fight as tunnels were coming up and many trains were shifting going opposing ways each track in a line. However any thoughts on that were dashed when the crazy kid decided to cause destruction in mass on the track they were on. Suddenly bringing forth an earth wall and taking a heavy train off its tracks. Easily the wreck would cause mayhem. Bau already was jumping from his car to one not heading for a wall before it hit. The sudden hit likely jolting the whole train and without a supernatural ability to walk being used would cause anyone to mess up their footing. They just went from moving to a harsh dead stop. Bau would take advantage of the care moving in the opposite direction to help him close the distance. In that moment he ran forward along his new train making those precious seconds count before jumping across as the trains finally settled after the one behind it crashed into it. Once again causing anyone to lose their balance. Hopefully the kid had to focus on balancing himself and couldn't stop the approach before Bau was on top of him. Stick sweeping for his left knee upon landing.

As Ryo hopped from train to train in preparation for his plan of action, he was able to catch a glimpse of his opponent as he came out of the doors on his side of the arena. Ryo would learn that his opponent was extremely large. While that detail could not really confirm anything in the world of ninja, it was safe to say that Ryo’s opponent could pack a punch if he got close enough. His opponent would also be carrying a wooden staff, while it was most likely used to making walking a bit easier, one probably did not want to get hit by something like that. Ryo made a mental note that he would have to avoid getting anywhere near his opponent. Ryo lacked the necessary jutsu to stand a chance when someone was in his face, and most of all, he was not very sure what to do when that occurred. Ryo assumed that he had to treat this man like a dangerous animal, doubting that he would willingly give up an advantage as Xiao did. Ryo realized that this one might be a bit tough and probably would not end in one move.

Ryo got to his desired location without any issue. He was also able to conduct his plan of stopping the trains on his track by raising the earth in their path. He forgot one simple thing, though, which was to use the supernatural walking practice to avoid faceplanting or falling off the train. As the pillar rose in front of the train car Ryo was on, Ryo realized his mistake. He would attempt to focus chakra into the soles of his feet and would succeed at the last possible second. However, due to the late use of the technique, he was still thrown terribly off balance. While suceeding in regaining his balance, his opponent, using a moving train to gain ground, was now right on him. Ryo was not aware of what his opponent attack was going to be, but he knew he had to respond. He would quickly form a series of hand seals on his right hand, channeling doton chakra onto the outer layer of his skin. This gown, which was completely covering Ryo's whole body, would fail to stop the damage of Bau's attack. This impact would cause moderate bruising to the impact area. Ryo's gown, however, would succeed in negating the knockback of the attack. This would make it seem as if Bau's staff hit a solid wall. Still standing firm, Ryo realized that this fight would be too close quarters for his comfort. Ryo would attempt to raise his right leg, the one unbruised, and send a strong kick towards his opponent's torso in an attempt to push him back. If this succeeded, Ryo, while bringing his leg back to the ground, would tap his foot and send a chakra ripple down the length of the train car and towards his opponent. This width of this ripple would be near identical to the width of the train, making it unavoidable. When hit by this ripple, Ryo's opponent would see several dense trees sprout around him. This would make it seem as if Ryo had vanished and the gap between where he was and Bau was now blocked.

If this technique was a success, Ryo would begin to form a series of hand seals on his right hand again. Upon finishing the ground below Bau would be turned into mud. This sudden change in terrain would likely to throw Bau off balance. The mud Bau was now in would proceed to drag him ten meters down the length of the train car and even further away from Ryo's position. Ryo could have made the mud drag his opponent off the side of the train car, but given the outcome of the first round, he did not want something like this to happen. This series of moves would hopefully give Ryo time to breathe while his opponent was now a comfortable distance away. He would just have to see how his opponent would react.

Bau had managed to launch through the air taking advantage of the situation. His speed and that of the train with the sudden distraction had been all the warrant he needed to close the distance and to take his advantage. He had sped across the way and now landed in front of his opponent already striking while he was off balance. The wooden stick whistling its savage cry as Bau swung it with expert hands. Aged and scarred hands that had seen war, blood shed and death all for wealth or land. Greed in the end had always led these hands. Even in a lawless place as well as one with good folk. He had found himself only when he had left that life behind. He was a mercenary now but one that did not kill. That simply meant one thing though. If not his sword he would use his staff. Something he had trained in equally. If he had been Bau Eitilt the red in the homeland he was just a peaceful man named Bau here. The visage only broken now by the sight of the towering man coming down upon him. To stand before him. To strike him.

The stick would land with a solid cracking noise but still even as Bau heard the left knee fracture he noticed it did not bend to his strike. His will defied with little logic. He knew the bone would be damaged all the same. A fractured knee was usually the end of a battle for an opponent. However these kids were strong. Each showcasing talents he would not have seen back home. The last one had managed to replicate himself and throw both lightning and water at him. Skilled with a knife too. Had he been their age as he had been back then he would be no match. All he had to match them was skill and experience. Even as he finished with the strike and pulled it back. The opponent was lifting his good leg. Putting weight on that knee further as he thrust forward to try and kick him in a straight thrust. Oh how the youth could be so vigorous that adrenaline would keep them going. However Bau was just as quick and even stronger. As the leg rose Bau would step into it. His left hand reaching out with his difference in size giving him reach.

Bau would clasp his hand firmly around the boys ankle and yank upwards to attempt to throw him further off balance. The kick meant to hit him now head straight up awkwardly. Bau wasn't satisfied with only doing one thing at once though. As he brought the ankle up with one hand he brought his stick down with the other. This time aiming for the good knee as he attempted to keep control of where it would be. His staff whistling once more down as the kick was directed to the sky. To finish off he would step forward to stomp on the toes of the left leg with the fractured knee and shoulder check the boy in an attempt to trip him. A dirty trick sure but he knew if he could knock him to  the ground he would have the advantage here.

When the old man’s stick hit his leg, he knew he made a mistake. He was expecting some strength similar to the Genin’s he fought in the academy, only capable of causing some moderate bruises. Oh, how he was wrong. As the stick hit Ryo’s knee, an audible crack could be heard in the air. Some might say that it was the old man’s stick, cracking under Ryo’s leg strength, but people who guessed that would be wrong. Ryo’s bone was fractured pretty badly, and despiting standing strong, it hurt a lot. The pain would be visible on Ryo’s face as he winced. His mind was still racing, though, and he continued with his previous plan. This would cause Ryo’s kick to make it so all of his weight was on his newly damaged bone. Due to some amount of adrenaline running through his veins and some assistance from Supernatural Walking Practice, he was able to stay standing, but the intense pain made his kick was weak and floppy like a sad noodle. Even Ryo had enough combat experience in the academy to know what was coming next.

Ryo’s opponent effortlessly dodged the sad attempt of a kick, and Ryo’s rational mind saw that coming. Anyone could given the condition Ryo was in. When Bau began to wrap his hands around Ryo’s leg, Ryo was already performing hand seals on his left hand, which was a reasonable distance away from his opponent. This was a bold move for anyone to make. Upon finishing, Ryo channeled Katon chakra into his mouth, quickly releasing it and blasting a 4-meter long, 3-meter wide, and 3-meter tall fireball right at his opponent. This would immediately cause major first-degree burns as it engulfs his opponent before moving on down the length of the train car they were on. When hit by a blast of this size and speed at such close range would make it almost impossible to avoid as the victim would have far less than a second to react once it begins its launch.

One might also believe that this would harm Ryo in this instance, and they would be correct. However, Ryo’s gown was still active. This blanket of chakra over his skin would make him immune to his own attack, making what would seem to be a last-ditch suicide bomb a reasonable attack. This was the best thing that he could do.

Bau had already dedicated himself to his attack. At this range from point blank with no hint at the boy having fire attacks he had no chance to dodge without using that....Even if he had intended to use it the point blank explosion was too fast to react to. Fire burst forth from the boy he was fighting with a rage unlike much Bau had seen for some time. A roaring blaze slamming forward and deafening. He turned his head away to protect his eyes as he pushed through it. The slam of his foot down on the boys toes would leave heavy bruising on them. Almost fracturing them as the shoulder check would do to the boys chest. Just not enough to crack his sternum but certainly for most enough to knock the air out of him as he was knocked down as that was the intent of the attack. With his hands focused on hand seals and his weight already off balance he would likely slam down hard onto his back against the train car. If the hard shoulder check to the sternum didn't knock the wind out of him Bau doubted the slam to the train car would do less. His staff however would once again do its work on the boys other knee this time. Another loud crack echoing through the arena as bone met wood harshly. Aiming to fracture his other knee and leave him with two fractured knee's. However before Bau could see an effect he had need to shield his eyes.

Fire from the world before this one filled his memory. Villages with their hay roofs burning as they were looted to feed an army. Bodies laying around the streets as the starving men found and took what they wanted. Burning and burying what they didn't. Silver and food were the main interests back then. Survival and comfort. He had thought his life changed since then. No one trying to kill him as he stuck with easy jobs. However this boy attempting to burn him. To possibly permanently damage him over a contest angered him. Fire and smoke filled the area between them for a moment before Bau could act. He knew he was burning. He could smell it but that old wound to his spine that he had healed partially from left him with no sense of touch. Still he was burning and a part of him felt angry over that. His hand would release the boys ankle he had been gripping with all his strength as if the fire had forced him back. Only to bring the stick over his shoulder and hold both ends of it. Gripping the base with his main hand and the tip with his other before bending it and releasing it. A downwards swing parted the smoke as he sent it down at fifteen meters per second from point blank onto the boy right hand. If he made contact it would fracture the boys fingers.

As soon as the drop shot was preformed on the boy on the ground now he would jump back. Landing one car away. Patting the still burning flames out all over himself. His hair, his clothes...his hat. Smoldering now as he patted them out. His skin was red with first degree burns he could tell that much. The whole time emerald green eyes would look to the boy he had been fighting for a grand total of a few seconds now. Maybe a minute. Speaking if the boy allowed the time to do so.

"If ye stand lad ye will no doubt put to much pressure on yer knee's. Don't find it shameful ta know yer limits. It makes ye more likely ta survive longer. Do us a favor now luv and don't get up."

Ryo’s attack hit his target. The fireball came out in an instant, hitting the old man dead on. An explosion was heard throughout the arena, being able to be heard over the moving train cars around them. Ryo expected this last attack to end it there. He imagined that anyone who took a fireball from point-blank range would show some sign of shock or pain, possibly allowing him to turn the fight back around. However, Ryo did not account for numbness, and his opponent did not show any sign of stopping his attack despite being a well-aged man. The old man powered through the large fireball that Ryo sent out, continuing his planned attack. Ryo, not expecting this kind of will and strength from his opponent, did not see this coming. He should have been expecting the unexpected, but anyone would make the same mistake if they were in his current position. His gown protected him from his own blast, but the same could be said about his opponent’s nerves. Ryo felt a foot stomp against his toes on his left foot, which while only causing mild bruises, added to the severity of his situation. He was now entirely off balance now, contributing most of his ability to stand up to his opponent’s grasp of his leg. He looked his opponent for a brief second, taking the man’s monstrous aura in. His clothes were on fire and his skin turned a dark red, and he continued on. Powering through pain by not having a sense of it at all. Ryo was not sure if he should be afraid of this man or respect him. The old man rammed into Ryo with his shoulder, and Ryo could not really do much to remain standing any longer. His endurance was running out as this match reached its final climax. His left came out from under him, and he fell backward on to the hard metal roof of the train. His head and back hit hard while his lower body was still in the air, only because of his opponent’s grip. This was not the end of his assault, so Ryo braced himself for more pain. The old man lifted his walking cane once more, bringing it down onto Ryo’s right leg. Just as before, a loud crack could be heard, and now the audience knew that it was not the man’s staff. The scale of this fight was finally beginning to tip towards one side, and it was the young sloth’s. Ryo opened his mouth to scream, but the opportunity was taken away when he felt the same stick come down on his right hand, which essentially shattered every bone in it. The swing was so fast, and Ryo had no time to respond to it. His screams became moans of agony as every move he made hurt him more and more. The adrenaline he felt lessen it, sure, but this would be unbearable for anyone.

As his opponent hopped backward to the second train car, Ryo stayed on the ground, showing no implication that he intended to move. He held his right hand close to his chest with his left, not moving his legs as he rolled back and forth in pain. He thought about his first battle. Then, the arena’s unstable ground seemed to be made with the intention to ruin Ryo’s combat strategy. He thought that was bad until he encountered this arena. Who thought it was a good idea to fight on metal rooftops that move at incredible speeds? Ryo focus on Doton made him have the need to be close to the ground, and that was not possible on this stage. There was the rule that made it clear that he was unable to touch the ground. He thought he would be able to circumvent this gimmick by removing the need to hop train to train, but in reality he only made it worse for himself. His opponent found his way on Ryo’s frozen platform, which confined Ryo to a small space against a gigantic opponent. He did not have much of an answer for people who got close, so he truly did feel like he got screwed over by this arena. Trains were stupid anyway. Despite all of this, he thought he gave a good effort given the situation. He tried to answer his opponent’s relentless attacks, and the things he came up with seemed to be the best move. Now, as the proctors watched from the sidelines, Ryo felt the need to stay on the ground.

Suddenly, though, this plan was thrown out the window. As he was writhing in pain, he heard his opponent’s voice. His words, while probably genuine, were received as cocky and arrogant. Specifically the words, ‘do us all a favor and stay down’. This lit a fire deep inside Ryo, one that he did not know existed. The fact that his opponent had the nerve to say something like that to him made him boil. His opponent could have just stayed silent while the proctors determined the winner of the match, but that was not enough for him. He had to rub it in Ryo’s face.

Ryo’s moans halted, and his voice came out. “No,” he muttered, making it nearly impossible to understand. His left hand went to the ground and proceeded to do all it could to position Ryo so he was sitting upright. All the time, Ryo’s breath was stuttered and rocky, making it clear that this was too much for him. “No,” he repeated himself, more clearly than before. “This isn’t over yet.” He was now sitting upright, his upper body leaning forward so his weight would not make him fall backward. Ryo’s eyes stared at his opponent, showing a fiery determination that was uncommon for the young man. He shifted his left hand behind his back, forming a singular hand seal before both of his arms were stretched out towards his opponent. Suddenly, each moved in its own erratic manner, with one going clockwise and the other going counter-clockwise. If one watched as this happened, they would be overcome with a sudden feeling of dizziness, which would make it appear as if the world was performing barrel rolls. Ryo, despite having the sudden determination to win this, knew that this was truly his last move of this fight. He had to be lucky for this to work.

To be honest Bau didn't want to keep fighting. It hadn't been lost on him that he was essentially being paid to break children. For the nation that was just part of the norm. However even if this was just another game of theirs. Even if they could fix the boy he still heard his screams. Still knew the pain he was causing and didn't wish to continue. It was not of malice that he wished the boy to stay down. He honestly didn't want to hit him again. He could see the boy in pain. He knew he was capable of winning. All he had to do was smack the kids head or his other hand maybe. But what purpose would torment serve? He was not a cruel man nor was he a hero. He wanted to be a good man however. Still as the boy began to rise he would lean on his stick a little more. Watching him with emerald eyes. Not many had the will to get up with all that damage. To sit up must have taken everything for him. All the fire in his eyes as he refused to stay down. Damn this kid. Damn him and his want to win.

Still the boys hands would lift and begin to shift awkwardly. He was obviously up to something. Bau would clutch his stick a little tighter as he prepared to attempt to counter the next attack. Likely more fire heading his way. However what happened next was unexpected. One moment he was fine and the next the world was spinning. He lost track of up and down and his head suddenly went light. He stumbled and vomited out what liquids were in his stomach as he fell to his knee's. The world wouldn't stop spinning. Already he could only focus on being where he was by touch. However even the slightest shift sent his form rolling to the side. His hand managed to catch onto the side of the train car as he rolled over the edge and held himself there. What had he done? It was so hard to think. Hanging there as a train blew passed him. The lights and motion driving him even sicker. He could substitute out of it. Move out from the dire position he was in. Get back onto the train and safe again...if only just a little.

He looked to his reflection in the window of the wrecked train. His green eyes staring back at him. Noting now the red skin and raging appearance it gave him. How much like his old self he appeared to be. This boy with all his will was simply trapped here with the beast of old. He realized he didn't care if he won...didn't care if he got the winning pay. He was getting paid just to be here anyway. He was tired and didn't want to fight anymore anyway. His head was swimming so in the end he simply let go. For no apparent reason instead of trying to pull himself up he released the edge of the train car and fell to the gravel below. Landing there before dropping to his rump and leaning back against the train. Already they would be calling the match but he didn't care. Shaking hands fumbled for the pipe in his pocket as he pulled it free. Barely able to strike a match before he began to smoke. Lighting up the green herb there and taking a deep hit. If his head was going to swim he was going to settle it. His fight was over anyway.

As Ryo moved his hands in the unusual pattern, his vision started to blur. The pain was becoming too much for him as he hoped that his last move had some effect on his opponent. He watched as the blob several feet away fell to his knees, soon falling off the train and eventually onto the ground below. The announcer’s voice could be heard over the sound of the several trains stopping, announcing Ryo’s victory. With that, he fell backward onto the train car, his eyes closed. He welcomed the painless feeling of unconsciousness as the proctors came out of their positions in the shadows. Eventually, he was transported to the medical area as a winner. But did he really win anything?
