"So, what do you hope to learn in Kirigakure? We seem to be known for our swordsmanship... was that one of the things that gravitated you towards us... If you want to become a stronger ninja, you'll need to have a reason. I'm curious as to what that reason might be..."

A couple of weeks had passed since Ayakashi posed the question. He regretted not being prepared, not already having the passion and direction needed to answer swiftly and confidently. Feeling as though he had somehow failed to seize the opportunity and fearing that his sense of direction might be lost soon enough if he couldn’t produce an adequate answer in the moment that he faced his superior next. Her kind words and own prowess as a shinobi provided potent fuel with which his fires burned in the days after, lighting his way through the darkness of uncertainty and an wounded ego. Confidence and hope returned to him gradually following the traumatic experiences of his capture as reiterations of her praise coaxed them from out of hiding.

Yet hiding was something Takahiro never resorted to upon his safe return ‘home.’  The term itself still felt awkward as he lapsed occasionally in referring to his little rental space as such. It  was quaint, simple and relatively unpopulated by all the youthful frivolities the average teenager might otherwise adorn their room with. A few pictures, one of his mother and father, whose dignified blue eyes pierced his own, and a single kunai resting atop two nails were the only two aesthetic pieces he had on display. Throughout the rest of the room one only would more or less just find functional items: books of various sciences, papers both blank and used, even reused, a rather large map sprawled the wall across from his bed in opposition to his small shrine-like wall-display. It bore ink lines that marked efficient routes, and noteworthy locations of the all islands of Mizu no Kuni.

Taka examined the crude workup with pride he hid well from his visage, both oculi burned with focus that implied his mind and thoughts were perhaps elsewhere. His eyes would avert themselves, as his signature ribbon became their new focus before proceeding to grip the fabric and fasten his hair; This action was forceful and the accompanying, wayward tongue that protruded from his mouth attested to his degree of focus. His fingers were becoming more dexterous from the trainings, and his hands definitively stronger as newfound veins paraded just beneath the surface of the newly calloused skin covering his fleshy mitts. As his arms dropped the deed was done, and Taka took one more brief moment to look himself in the eyes before their attention averted to the growing length of his thick, obsidian hair.

With a nod, and the mental affirmation ‘Ganbaru’ the Kimura was off to the races. The little equipment he had and his usual garb, including his more recently purchased kimono, of an azure blue silk with triangle patterning adorning the sleeves and tail, was all the child reasoned he would need. The door creaked shut and Taka wondered just what sort of people he would cross paths with today, as the key he inserted turned, dragging the metal inner workings against one another until a metallic thump set the deadbolt, and provided the little assurance he needed. Quickly he made his way through the hall, down the wooden staircase, that spitefully shared one’s presence with anyone nearby, until the main hall came into view.

The entry ways he passed as he exited were still dark, serving as a reminder that many people had yet to even start their day. Thus was the life of a shinobi he thought with little worry over the early hour that his superiors had chosen to start. His steps were intentionally lithe, and with as much haste as he could afford Takahiro found his way to the streets of Kirigakure-no-Sato. A night’s rest had seemingly swindled away all of its usual glory, as people still lay dreaming elsewhere of what would become of the day. The sound of his steps echoed through the calm twilight air, reverberating off adjacent buildings and giving the child an needlessly eerie feeling as he hastened his pace to reach his destination.
