  • Clan History: The Iaido clan predominantly stemmed from a sect of the fire temple which made its way to the land of kirigakure no sato. Beginning as little more than a small and secluded protestant movement, they steered their incredible spiritual power and prowess into becoming far less peaceful than their fire country bothers and sisters, giving up their oaths of pacifism and shifting more into a faith of action and zen rather than meditation and deep thinking. Over time, what began as a small separatist movement, quickly fell into obscurity as the religious zealots assimilated into kirigakure and adopted its lifestyle, the religious organization quickly became little more than a collective community, shedding what little structure and formality they had until eventually, they were considered more of a clan than an organization of any kind, bound together with a set of religious and political beliefs which set them apart from the fire temple or anyone directly around them.

    They called themselves the 'Mushin.'

They key practice of the Mushin was to keep a state of meditation during hard work, to feel no thought and to be of no mind so that one could maintain a true sense of clarity during any action, and that if a person could limitlessly remain in this state of mind without effort, it would be a sign that they would ascend to a higher plane on the reincarnation wheel should they die... Those who aspired to perform this act were revered while those who did not didn't have their skepticism held against them. It was in this way, the Mushin once again developed an internal power structure of sorts, surrounding the idea of wisened elders who oversaw the others... this structure remained in place for some time until the warrior culture of kirigakure bled into the ranks of the Mushin, several of their children having been trained at the ninja academy of the bloody mist, returning with tales and how their Zen had allowed them to excel at their studies, far exceeding their peers at the time...

It was here, that the Iaido were born...

A single prodigious child, having been gifted a weapon for the chuunin exams, practiced with the tool day in and day out using the way of the Mushin, the ideal of hard work and zen being applied to combat was a match seemingly crafted by the heavens as the two seemed to naturally sync in a way few other things could replicate, and quickly the child began to develop mental abilities due to how much further combat pushed the body and the mind than other laborious tasks. It took two months of training in these abilities for the child to develop his first projection of the Mushin no Ken. Having competed in the chuunin exams, the boy's blade was cut in two by a jutsu of his opponents, so lost was the child in the combat that he swung his severed hilt as if his blade were still attached, he could hear the air where the blade once was hissing like an edge cleaving the whispering wind in two. When the weapon should have made contact 'nothing' seemed to sink deep into the skin of his adversary and the boy could feel the weight of the blow... the boy fell his opponent, but, there seemed to be no wound where the attack had struck, and no tool that seemed to have struck it.

Discovery of this technique, led others to learn its ways, quickly becoming a Hiden technique of the clan which would become quickly known for their strange bukijutsu techniques known as the Mushin no Ken, or, way of no sword. In honour of this new direction, the clan re-titled itself as the Iaido...

  • Kekkei Genkai Name: Mushin no Ken (The Way of no Blade)

  • Kekkei Genkai Description:

The Mushin no Ken is an advanced technique combining the talents of Genjutsu and Bukijutsu to create something unique in of itself. By generating long psychic weapons manifested of their own will and intent, the Iaido are able to install the effects of Genjutsu on their opponents when they come into contact with these weapons. The jutsu are effectively phantasmal genjutsu triggers, given form and manifested into the physical world as bukijutsu techniques and associated abilities. As such members of the clan are often seen carrying blade-less hilts to use as catalysts for their many techniques. Mushin no Ken abilities come in sets of 2, the catalyst technique; which creates the form of the weapon / trigger that will activate genjutsu abilities upon contact. As well as the genjutsu effect that is being channeled through them; which generates the intended effect whenever the Iaido clan member lands a blow.

The Mushin no Kens' catalyst techniques (unless specified otherwise) have no physical presence, and do not interact with solid matter unless it is infused with chakra, in which it interacts as if it were solid (be it an elemental affinity, passive chakra based effect or active effect / jutsu.). Ie. If an S rank armour had no chakra affinity, the lowest rank of Mushin no Ken abilities could phase through and inflict its effect on that opponent. But likewise, the highest rank of Mushin no Ken blades could not pass through an armour if it had an elemental affinity, as, Mushin no Ken techniques have no natural ability to force through, thus, the wielder would have to find a gap, or aim for exposed areas. (though, they could clash with a chakra enhanced weapon normally.) These catalyst Techniques can take many forms, ranging across the entire spectrum of weapons developed by man, from swords to whips and even bows & arrows. However, alone, catalyst techniques on contact with a victim, only deliver the pain of being hit by a basic weapon of its kind and rank.

While the Mushin no Kens' Genjutsu abilities can range from maintainable skills which convey their ability each and every hit, to projectile triggers launched from the catalyst techniques in the same nature as bukijutsu abilities. But therein lays the limitation, Mushin no Ken Genjutsu cannot emit the usual complex 'ninjutsu' like qualities possessed by the specialization alone.

Members of the Iaido clan receive +1 tier to their reaction time due to their long time use and expertise of weapons and martial arts.

  • Drawbacks:

Mushin no Ken techniques work in a similar way as an advanced elements, and should be listed as Mushin no Ken abilities in their specialization field when created. The clan members' ability to use Mushin no Ken abilities is limited to their specialization with the lowest rank between Genjutsu and Bukijutsu. Ie. If a member has B rank Genjtusu and C rank Bukijutsu, they can only use C rank Mushin no Ken Techniques. In turn, Iaido clan members begin with their primary specialization at C-Rank, their secondary specialization at D rank, and cannot learn a fourth specialization. (They can learn their tertiary specialization normally.)

Due to their intense focus on Mushin no Ken for so many years, Iaido clan members have become more limited with their understanding of elements. As such, Iaido clan members must also begin with the Hesitant (Element) specialization without balancing it with an additional positive.

Mushin no Ken techniques require a physical catalyst to be manifested, usually in the form of a special hilt that houses no physical blade to interrupt the chakra flow of their techniques. This catalyst must be of equal rank or higher than the Mushin no Ken technique the Iaido clan member intends to use. Hilts of broken weapons may also be used as Mushin no Ken catalysts, but are considered 1 rank lower.

Finally, Iaido clan members' techniques, are psychic in nature, thus, create a direct link to their own willpower and thought. Should an Iaido clan member's catalyst technique ever be forcefully destroyed by another jutsu of equal rank cause the user a considerable measure of pain, requiring endurance of a rank higher to be able to push through without flinching for a moment and causing their reaction time to be reduced by -2 for two posts. (Strong Willed reduces the endurance requirement by 1 rank.)
