Clan History: Solitude drives many people mad. People who are shunned by society for whatever reason often find themselves pulling the short end of the stick, dealing with a life they did not ask for, treated in a way they hardly deserve. Society, grinning behind its porcelain mask, is a cruel thing thriving on those it considers a burden.

Is it then surprising that some embrace this solitude and search solace within it? Is it hard to understand that those considered weak attempt to turn their weakness to strength? It is not. And thus it is not hard to understand where the Depth Dwellers come from. Embracing their own solitary madness, some of these shunned people discovered new abilities as they withdrew themselves even more from society and went to live there were no one wanted to come.

They embraced a darkness within themselves few would return from, learned to find the limits of an ever mutable concept, searched for what was hidden and understood others needed to be forgotten. As they lost themselves within society's shadow, they found themselves reborn as the negative of our world.

On the other side of the spectrum, the world looks quite differently. It is not the shunned who are weak and need help, it is the world that relies on brittle structures and layers of falsities that is threatened to come down crashing. It is not those who have lost who are to be pitied but those who cling to fleeting existences who fail to understand their sorry state. Yes, those living in a world where everything has already been given form will eventually see it all decay within the grasp of their greedy hands.

But the Depth Dwellers, who no longer have anything to lose, are able to be everything.

When Hastur rose to power and called upon the Jashinists to join him, the Depth Dwellers understood a new era had come. Those once shunned were welcomed, those who hid revealed themselves. Knowing that their own KKG had grown strong enough to claim their rightful place within society, the Depth Dwellers now crawl out of the Darkness where they resided for so long. While they do not necessarily follow the Jashinists or the Dark God, they do see them as omens of a new era. An Era where they, too, will finally be accepted in Kumogakure.

Members: Ilina, First of the Darkened Ones
Ilina is just as much physically alive as she has become a concept of the clan's life. She is the one who first discovered the abilities pertaining to Yami and further gave shape to its existence, teaching how to wield the corrupting Darkness to others. But that was generations ago. At this point in life, this immortal being (?) whose understanding of Darkness is so vast she may as well be its personification, continues to roam the land unseen by mundane perceptions. Whether one will ever meet her in person? Only time will tell...

Fukai Jūnin Y4syLuV
Kekkei Genkai Name: Yami (闇, "Darkness")
Kekkei Genkai Description: The Depth Dwellers have a peculiar set of skills that make them awkward or eerie to say the least. They dwell in the darkness of the world and the mind, seeking power where none other have ever sought. This power is easily categorised in three distinct arts - Umbramancy, Intonation and Aeonics - but can be combined when creating techniques.

The Art of Umbramancy

This art may well be the hallmark of the clan that has often made them be seen as usurpers of the Nara's shadow arts. Less is true, for this skill does not work with shadows but with the concept of 'Darkness' in its many forms; the ability to use powers undiscovered and mysticism upon which the light of understanding has yet to be shed. Umbramancy is an instinctive acknowledgement hidden within all human beings but brought out to the surface of existence by the Fukai Jūnin.

This art is what grants the Fukai Jūnin the ability to mold chakra in its pure, non-elemented form and its more specialised Inton form. It allows them to shape weapons and armour out of nothingness, it shapes reality out of oblivion or turns reality into oblivion and grants them the ability to draw out the deepest secrets and buried terrors within the mind. In its most benevolent form it is a corrupting yet soothing embrace, in its most cruel form it rips chakra and flesh alike to pieces.

The benefit
Umbramancy grants Fukai Jūnin access to Inton, and pushes their natural power to such level of mastery it grants them a -5 chakra reduction to all techniques pertaining to their primary specialisation. The chakra cost of these abilities can be no lower than 5 chakra when activated and 5 chakra/two posts when maintained. This bonus may not be stacked with similar effects.

The cost
This art leaves a visible mark. Black shadowy tendrils corrupts the spine and the eyes of its users, colouring it pitch black to the point the spine can be seen on the surface of the skin and the eyes no longer hold colour.

This taint consumes the colour of their visible chakra, turning it black. Clones (and any similar technique) lose their ability to hide the original through mimicry - while they preserve their chakra-related effects and abilities, all clones are made of ink-black writhing chakra which instantly reveal the original's unique features and more coherent form between them.

Lastly, a Fukai Jūnin loses access to all five typical elements. They do not start with any and they can never train them either, driving them to learn the depths of their own skill on their own. It goes without say they may not take the Hesitant (Element) as a negative SC.

The Art of Intonation

Intonation is the logical result of the human mind trying to understand what 'Darkness' truly is and what the limits of its existence entails. Rather than to search for a means in how to destroy it, the Fukai Jūnin attempts to discover a way to delve even deeper and turn instinctive power into a sharpened blade. This resulted in the discovery of 'Words of Power', words that shape that which can't be known into something more recognisable. But naming that which should not be named does not come without consequences.

Words seemingly holding no meaning reshaped entire realities. As they delved deeper into this mystical phenomenon the taint inherent to 'Darkness' eventually affected every word they uttered, forcing the Fukai Jūnin to find a means to avoid speech lest they tore their own existence to shreds any time they spoke. A ritual was created to strip the entire clan and the next generations to come from speech, damning them to a life of silence.

The benefit
Intonations do not require hand seals. Merely mouthing the word, even when silenced, is sufficient to manifest the effects related to them, no matter what they may be. Intonations are not affected by sound muffling techniques, nor do they break them.

The cost
All Fukai Jūnin are mute without exception and can't undo this by any means. This cripples their interaction with others, making it harder for them to fit into society as they maintain the steeled resolution a word may never be mouthed other than to name that which should not be named. All threads involving other Player Characters require +10% word count from the Fukai Jūnin's end before they may be used for rank up purpose. This penalty does not affect solo threads.

The Art of Aeonics

Time is a strange factor that does not seem to faze the concept of Darkness. While many are of a mind that with time the truth is uncovered, the reality is that it only uncovers a small section of the vastness of the concept of Darkness itself. Yes, one little secret will come to light. But how many others will you have lost by the time you found it?

Much like people may use Time as a weapon against Darkness, it can also be used as a weapon against them. And what else than a concept brought to life at the hands of the Fukai Jūnin, ever encroaching and tainting in its nature, could make use of such a power to reclaim what was stolen, make the mind forget or uncover secrets the world would much prefer to keep hidden?

The benefit
Aeonics induce a modicum of time manipulation within their techniques, whether it is to grant themselves an edge in speed, to have their effects apply sooner than anticipated or to reread the Timeline of Life itself to spot a minute error within their opponent's actions. This grants their techniques a +10 m/s boost (sensory excepted), and makes Sensory techniques function as if they were one rank higher for the purpose of interaction (this does not increase their radius).

The cost
When time is at your side and you hold the ability to manipulate it in such a degree you're entitled an error or two, it often instills a sense of arrogance and carelessness in those who have grown attached to powers such as these. This results in a permanent penalty of -2 tiers to Perception, for it doesn't matter much to them if they perceive the error now, in the past or in the future.

Drawbacks:

  • All drawbacks stated in the description of each art apply without exception.

Is this a new element or just a different type of the "N/A" element? I'm confused since you list it at the very top, but it's then never mentioned again really, only that they can't learn any of the 5 base elements.

The Art of Intonation; The benefit is that their activation method is just making the word(s) with your mouth and lips instead of hand seals or something else? Furthermore this is hardly a drawback that balances the effect out. It means nothing really to be mute if you can still just cast all your technique by just moving your mouth and lips.

The Art of Aeonics; The drawback here is also insignificant to balance the positive, it covers one of the two effects, but not both.

This is not a new element. There is a clan that has this already.

Intonation
You confuse the ability to cast jutsu in silenced zones for being mute. A mute can't speak. None of the clan members can speak. However, Intonations are not necessarily an existing word: a kid can blur nonsense to us yet mean something tangible; kids can communicate with each other even if we adults don't understand it. A mute can emit sounds to add meaning to sign language which are not understood by us.

Art of Aeonics
The -2 always applies, even when no jutsu are being used. The bonus only applies to a certain type of jutsu, and obviously when jutsu are being used - neither can they be combined as per their stated limitation. Permanent penalty vs situational bonus - the penalty covers both. Certainly with the speculated stat rule rework, the penalty will gain in power.

If it's not a new element, than remove it from the top of the clan where it implies it is a new element.

Intonations let me quote the issue with it. The benefit says: "Intonations do not require hand seals. Merely mouthing the word, even when silenced, is sufficient to manifest the effects related to them, no matter what they may be. Intonations are not affected by sound muffling techniques, nor do they break them."

The drawback says: "All Fukai Jūnin are mute without exception and can't undo this by any means."

So there is no drawback. Being mute does nothing for them since they can still cast their jutsu with their intonations, because they just need to mouth it.

I'm modding the clan under the current rules, if you want it modded under the new rules, then wait with it until the new rules are out. Further, it appears that you're trying to get us to use whichever rule-set will benefit you the most. Complaining in the jutsu modding section that things aren't being modded under the current rules, yet here you're almost implying as if I should mod it with the upcoming updates, fascinating.

Anyway, back to the topic. They're both active buffs, as in they influence combat. So there's two bonuses you're trying to get in the Aeonics section, however there is only one active debuff to counter it. The active drawback is not significant enough to warrant the two bonuses.
