A Place Away From Home pt. 2 (Social | No Kill | Haruka | Open ) 21e5mc9
Book One: Dawn of Oomi
Chapter Six: A Place Away From Home - Part Two;
Crowded Spaces!

Sunlight crept through a window forgotten the night prior. The beams of light crawled across her face and danced on her eyelids. A most horrible, off beat, kind of jig that quickly roused the young woman from her sleep. She groaned and moaned and stretched her arms out to either side of herself. There they lingered for a moment like some Eagle wanting to show off it’s full glory. When finally she pulled her arms back into herself, they quickly went about the work of tossing the blanket that, for the first time in a long time, had managed to stay on her overnight. She yawned, a long and heavy thing, before throwing her legs over the side of the bed and after a few more moments finally getting out of it.

“Stupid, Oomi. You slept the whole night.” She cursed herself. She’d meant to only take a nap and immediately head out into the city, but the exhaustion of the long trip from Iwagakure had made her dead to the world. Still, the girl put a smile on her face and went about the process of getting dressed.

After a quick bathing Oomi slipped into her usual attire; an alabaster cami, which bore an orange bow on it. Over this she put on a tiger orange sleeveless vest with white trim. Around her waist she tied a thick and long dull purple sash which hung from its knot on her left hip. Attached to that sash at the small of her back, as shiny as ever, was the metallic plate which bore the symbol of Iwagakure. Just beneath her sash a pair of blue shorts that allowed for greater ease of movement. On her feet a pair of Tai Chi shoes, the laces of which she’s lengthened and wrapped up nearly the entirety of her calves. About her biceps and forearms she wrapped thin bands of white rope, purely cosmetic in nature and only two rows deep. Lastly, Oomi pulled her hair back into a fairly tight pony tail and fastened it with a short bit of fabric which resembled the more traditional Iwagakure Shinobi’s headbands, and indeed upon this bit of fabric too was a small metallic plate bearing the villages symbol.

Once she was dressed, the young kunoichi wasted no time in getting out of the Inn and into the streets of Sunagakure. The heat of the morning sun put pause in her at first but the desire to explore this place she’d never been won out over that dry desert heat. At least she was out early and the sun had yet to reach its peak. She’d thought of rousing both Harichimo and Karumo, but assumed that they would already be attending to their mission. This meant she had plenty of free time to explore the city. First stop? Anybody’s guess, but from what she could tell she was headed toward one of the busier parts of the village; The Grand Bazaar

Ah morning. Blessed, horrifying morning. The sun was a welcome distraction from the shadows of the night, but in a place like this, it was a double edged sword. With the sun came the incessant burn; beyond just the abrasiveness of the sands constantly blowing across every surface and open space, the sun brought with it a fury that burned even in the shadows; an indirect power that cooked the skin of those that were sensitive to the power; which Haruka was extremely so. The curse of his condition, the sun was forever his worst enemy, even more so than the demons in his mind, and the looming chasm of lost that was his memories before that moment.

Another night of half-sleep; another night of fitful tossing and turning. Another night of terrifying nightmares and silent screams pulling at his throat. Cotton dry mouth, cracked and bleeding lips. Sweat caked in layers between sand and dirt and age. Another long morning in the showers; eyes on him and judgemental; more scars to carry around. He should stop staying in these cheap inns with communal everything; his funds were never much, he didn't want nor need for material things; but the lack of privacy was an issue when you had to deal with judgemental eyes and sharp blades. It was sheer luck he'd made it this long; maybe it was because he was working so early in the morning... even in backwater, cheap, rundown lodgings such as this, those staying more than an hour slept late if they could help it.

Not him, not really. The daytime was danger for him; but the night was no better. No, he was smart to get in and out as fast as possible; but he also needed to be especially careful. he had to check for sores and strange spots; any could spell disaster for him, and he needed to know; so time was wasted, valuable and dangerous to lose, but it had to be done.

A trip, a risk; but needed none the less. He had to go to the market; he needed supplies. He needed to replenish before his time came. Only a few hours remained, he must be ready in time for his meeting. Yes, that was why it was needed; he was going to have to look his best, and he needed to supplies for that.

So to the market he went. Beyond just those supplies, he needed a weapon; not for today, no; not for this village. He needed something for his upcoming trip, yes. There was always a danger investigating strange phenomena, and he would be doing that. He couldn't rely on Samael to protect him; that wouldn't be fair. Carry your weight, or you die; that was the truth of his life. He was trained to use a staff, and while he had his shakujo; that was not a weapon, it was never meant to be one and he refused to defile it as such. He would buy himself a weapon; an offensive staff, something decent enough to suffice until he could get something better. His funds were not that limited, but they would be if he went around buying glorious shiny perfect weapons that would shatter in a moment because they were all for show and not for proper use in battle.

He could live with something battered and bruised and almost broken. It would be perfect, as it would fit him to a 'T'. As such, he was in the Bazaar, he'd avoided this place for the most part, it was too easy to spend a few coin here, a few more there, and suddenly the entire day was gone and his money purse was empty. A dangerous temptation, one he refused to fall to. He knew what he needed, and he went for that, and his other supplies; and nothing more.

To that end, he worked his way around the market; the massive, sprawling maze of back alleys and wide avenues and not a single sign to point you anywhere. He was very quickly hopelessly lost, and that was... well, pretty normal. Ugh. Well... it was looking like he'd need to ask for directions; and while he wasn't the typical macho man that refused to do that on grounds of masculine pride, he was wary of asking anyone anything for sheer safety. Being albino was dangerous enough without people thinking you were cursed, or evil, or because of his red eyes, a demon. Superstitious nonsense. You couldn't tell demonic taint by the eyes, not without knowing what to look for. Red eyes didn't mean anything, beyond color. Given his eyes where the wrong type of red to bullshit being an Uchiha, he just didn't bother.

Glancing around, he realized he was basically boned. Everyone that could offer assistance was too busy being a merchant, and the people passing by either recoiled from him attention, pulled a blade just enough to be seen as a warning, or ignored him entirely.

Ah, the fun of being an outsider, albino, and tiny. A perfect storm to bring fear and hatred upon a person. Lovely.

There it was, the Grand Bazaar! Iwagakure had nothing like this. Well, it did but not on this scale. Sure, Oomi’s hometown had plenty of shops, hell her father owned one of them… but this. There must have been hundreds, maybe in thousands of people here! Whether either number was even close was up for question. The girl did have a knack for exaggeration. Still, there were certainly enough people about to quickly become lost in the crowd, just another insignificant face. That is unless you were pale as a ghosts bottom, which the boy that was soon to draw her attention was. However, first things first. Ramen!

Oomi almost swore she could smell the sweet aroma of that delicious noodley dish. This was more likely just her stomach telling her brain to tell her that it wanted Ramen; and it wanted it now! She followed her nose as best she could. Still, there was someone out there just waiting to be met and…

“A ghost!” There they were. Oomi had shouted, causing a few folks to look in her direction. Some, knowing who she was referring to, chuckled, but all quickly returned to their tasks. “I wonder if Stranger Ghost needs help.” Oomi asked aloud as she continued to watch Haruka as he walked by just a short distance away. She, of course, realized that he wasn’t actually a ghost. She didn’t mean it in a mean way, not like the people that had laughed. She just didn’t realize how insensitive her pet name for the stranger might actually be. How’d she like it if someone started calling her Touchy or something knowing she couldn’t feel a damned thing.

The girl nodded in response to her own question. “Yes, Stranger Ghost dooes need help and who wouldn’t want the assistance of Oomi, the Magnificent?” She further confirmed as she started after Haruka. “Wait, waiit.” She called out as she picked up her pace slightly to catch up to him. She’d either catch him simply on the strength of her intent to or he’d hear her calling, either way she was going get there and she did words would fall from her lips like water from a water fall. “Hello, Stranger Ghost. My name’s Oomi.” Insert a big goofy grin here. “You look just as lost as me.” He didn’t really but that was a good way to begin offering your services, right? Well, something like that. “We should be lost together that way maybe we can find our way with two brains and four eyes. Like a nerdy nerd.” She laughed at her own stupid joke and offered up the biggest smile afterwards as she waited for him to agree, because he was going to agree… or else.

The mild panic that accompanied large crowed was setting in pretty hard after only a few minutes, but he was doing a decent enough job of keeping it contained. Outside of the refusal to meet the eyes of anyone around him, he was managing to handle the urge to bolt into the open spaces of the desert and cry like a baby was tempered by sheer need to get this done and over with, so dealing was dealt with.

“Hello, Stranger Ghost." ...

Ah shit, that had to be him. There was nothing around that could fit that description but him. Nononononononononono. Maaaaaaaaaaan.

“You look just as lost as me. ... “We should be lost together that way maybe we can find our way with two brains and four eyes. Like a nerdy nerd.”

Wha-... what? He what? The boy was suddenly panicking a bit, a look of sheer terror flashing across his face as he froze in place and looked around like a spooked animal locked into a corner and searching for a path of escape. Yep; that was about right; he already prefered to be anonymous; so having someone calling him out directly? Not comfortable. Taking a moment to inhale deeply, hold it, and release it in a calming, meditative rhythm, "I am... lost, yes." He finally zero'd in on the person speaking to him, finding a specimen of womanhood that made him a little.... jealous, in an odd way. He'd never be that feminine in his life, even with jutsu to augment his already formidable skills and slim form. Damn, he'd be set for later if he looked half that good. "May I be of assistance?"

He wasn't sure how to handle this situation, so he was just going with his normal 'play it safe, try not to anger anyone, move on quickly' techniques.

- Overbearing 101 -

Oh, that poor boy. If only Oomi could see what it was like to be approached by her from his perspective, or anyone else’s for that matter. She did have a tendency to come on far too strong, a fault of her normally bubbly and friendly attitude. Ironic that the girl was so prone to acts of violence one would not expect from someone her age, nor that looked like her. Oomi smiled wild again, a crooked thing that looked fairly goofy. Somewhere in that head of her’s she’d noticed the terror that streamed across his face for a moment, but she ignored it. There was no need to fear the Oomi, none at all. That is, of course, unless he had any intentions of lashing out at her. Well, then it would be on like donkey kong and she’d prove why she was called the Taijutsu Princess - by herself.

“Awesome! Yes, you can be of service! You can be my escort and I’ll be yours!” She sang as she stepped closer to her new acquaintance and extended her right hand to him. “Nice to meet you.” She paused long enough for him to offer up his own name, if he so chose, but regardless of whether or not he did she’d resume speaking. In the meantime she’d pull her hand back and let it fall lazily at her side. “S’my first time in Sunagakure, how about you?” She asked, but didn’t really give enough time to answer. “I already like it here. It’s so, different from Iwagakure, and yet so very much the same.” She waved around at the Bazaar. “This place is amazing, I bet you could find ANYTHING here. Dad would probably love it. I should find something to bring back for him. That’s a good plan, isn’t it? I didn’t really have a reason to come to the Bazaar before, but now I do, so that must make it a good plan.” She’d gotten to rubbing her chin as she rambled and spouted Oomi logic. “How come you came? Was it just to see this place? It’s pretty amazing.” She reiterated after asking his purpose.

Without warning Oomi hooked her arm with his, invading his personal space without regard for how he might feel about it. Didn’t phase her one bit though. In fact, she didn’t even bother to check his reaction when she did it. Instead she just began to walk, tugging him slightly if he didn’t immediately follow in step. “We can help each other shop.” She finally turned her head to look at him again, but only for a brief moment before her attention was elsewhere. Still words fell from her lips. “That’d be awesome. You can be my new shopping buddy. We’ll buy amazing things in Sunagakure’s amazing Bazaar!” It was then that her attention was drawn to a shiny object sitting on a wooden table.

A vendor that had obviously come from somewhere else stood behind the table, a wide grin on his face. He’d already noticed the young girl looking. “Come, come! Take a closer look, lovely! Perhaps, you can convince your ghastly boyfriend there to purchase a bit of fine jewelry from Ol’Ganto!” He stroked his beard and tilted his head slightly as he waved them in his direction with his free hand. “Come, come now.”

Oomi looked to Haruka and then to the vendor before blurting out; “He’s not ghastly! He’s Ghostly! Which is mighty awesome, if I do say so myself. Imagine all the things he can do with his ghost powers! He should haunt you for calling him ghastly, that’s what he should do. That’s what I’m going to tell him to do!” All of this was truly meant to be a compliment, a moment of standing at the defense of her new friend. “Make sure you haunt him, Ghost.” Yep, it was too late. He was forever going to be Ghost to her now. Her way of reminding him that he was powerful despite his odd appearance. A service in her eyes, though probably still just as rude and inconsiderate.

So his entire purpose for being at the market shot right out of his mind when she invaded his space, and even more so when she took his arm and started dragging him along. He had basically nothing to him, barely any weight and almost nothing in his pockets and such. He was barely able to stutter out a "but-but-but...!" before his brain just shut down and his mental process devolved into extraordinarily intense internal screaming. Just pure, unadulterated internal screaming that had he given voice to it would have rocked the foundations of the world.

Oh, he was hearing everything, but he just had zero ways to deal with people of such personality. It was the kind of invasive and instantly comfortable with people that he never was. There was nothing wrong with it, he just didn't have the skills for it. Which was insane, given he was normally extremely charismatic and personable once he'd had a second to get to know someone, or else had instigated the interactions between himself and someone else. "Er... I... I'm not... I'm sorry but... eeeee...." Just stuttering and scared squeaking. Yep.

"Haruka... not ghost..." That was the best he could get out that was any sort of coherent.

- Food! -

Oomi tugged her new companion onward to the song of his stuttering. She didn’t mind it, by now she’d realized that he was nowhere near as open as she was. Not that that stopped her from doing what she was doing in the least. She’d open him up, she’d show him that it was worth not being so… whatever he was. She turned her head to look at him as he corrected her about his name. For a moment she was captivated by his eyes, they being so odd. Then her gaze rolled to his skin; pale as could be. Albino probably, she thought to herself. Though she wouldn’t dare ask, it wasn’t her business just like the fact that even though her arm was so tightly wrapped about his she could feel a thing wasn’t any of his.

“Ha-Ru-Ka.” She repeated back. “Ghost is much scarier though. That’ll make people think twice about messing with you.” She said with a nod as she paused for a moment. She released her grip on him, effectively ending the kidnapping, not that she’d be leaving his side anytime soon. “Kind of like how me being Oomi, the Taijutsu Princess makes people think twice about messing with me.” She nodded again and placed a hand on her stomach. “I’m hungry. Are you hungry? I am.” She said as she began to twist her head about as if her eyes might just happen to fall on a Ramen stand of some kind. There would be no such luck so instead she settled her gaze back onto Haruka. “We should find food. Food always makes friends.”

"Er... I ate before I came..." He was starting to get his voice back, slowly but surely; taking the chance to put a bit of space between them when given and running with it, moving a solid meter away to restore some semblance of personal space. With that space, he was able to begin to calm down; his breathing evening out and the sheer terror fading from his expression. "I... am not one invite terror. It is dangerous for me to do so."

Such instant and complete ease; he envied the female for that ability. He was a bit too broken to fake that ability himself; being 'mysterious' and closed off served him better than trying to be open and free and bubbly. Oh, he could be plenty friendly and such when he was comfortable, but this was a tad too fast. "You are from Iwa, you said? I was there a few months ago." He really didn't know what to talk about, or to say, or how to act, or anything, in this situation, and it showed. Wait... wasn't...

"Actually... I need to go in that general direction, honestly. If I am remembering the layout of the market, the weaponsmiths are near the food courts and dry market..."

- Thata way! -

Oomi had tilted her head up a bit as if it would better help the scent of Ramen reach her nose. She barely heard his admission to not being hungry, something about having already ate. Not a good enough excuse to turn down Ramen in her eyes and thus she continued her futile search. She’d never smell it, not from this distance, but that wasn’t going to stop her from trying. After a few hearty sniffs of the air, however, she turned her gaze back onto Haruka who’d gotten a few steps away from her now. She narrowed her eyes at him. “It’s not terror. It’s respect. Being scary doesn’t mean you’re terrifying. No, no, no. It means that people respect your power and fear having to deal with that, fear having to get the snot beat out of them.” She nodded in agreement with herself. “Terror is what Thugs and Tyrants do. No, no. We don’t want to be that. We want the people to do what we want because they realize there is no other way, because they’re willing to do for us because they know to oppose us is not only futile but just plain stupid. Much better to follow us and have the world, than fight against us and burn with it.” Very serious words followed by a big goofy grin. “So be scary, Ghost. Be as scary as you can be.” Her explanation of things probably didn’t make as much sense as she thought it did, but it was sincere.

“So. Weapons!” She pumped her fist as if she knew anything about them. “I have no idea where you would buy those sorts of things” She flexed, showing off a physique crafted for hand to hand combat; a martial artist's body. “I was born with my weapons.” It was only then that she realized that he’d said he thought he might find what he was looking for near the food. “I’ll follow your lead, captain! Onward to weapons and ramen! Ramen and weapons! Arrows and Noodles! Swords and… Noodles!” Not very clever, not very clever at all.

"Perhaps I misspoke. When I said terror, I meant... attention, toward myself or of myself. To me, that is terror, in many ways. When you are... different, many times you are the target of those that fear the unknown, and equate that with enemy. I strive to blend and erase from sight, so that I may survive to see another sunrise. It suits my needs far more than controlling others." Both philosophies where equally correct; each suited it's owner and that was what mattered to him. He didn't aim to change her mind, nor even attempt to; merely to clarify his own words. A habit; sometimes it helped to disarm dangerous situations, and he rathered it than a physical fight; so he'd come to rely on it even when not expressly needed.

"As I said, I do believe the weaponry dealers are near the food markets; and I do know that the other shops I need to visit are near there." She was moving and bouncing between subjects in a way that made his head hurt a bit; he was finding it hard to follow her logic in any way that worked to his thought process, but he was also aware that there might not even be a sense of logic there, and he was merely trying to divine order from chaos; a situation he'd found himself in before. "I want to say... we need to go west... so my right?" He was guessing wildly; attempting very hard to remember the flash of an image of a map of the market; a maze of stalls and alleys and shops that made his head hurt to think about.

He turned in the direction he'd indicated and began walking; he was almost certain she was going to follow him, so he didn't really wait at all. Given her bubbly and impulsive nature, he'd be more surprised if she didn't follow him, really.

- Journey West! -

Oomi tilted her head slighlty to the right as Haruka spoke. She could understand what he was saying but it still all seemed a mystery. Why would his appearance inspire such awful things in people? Why should he be judged by that rather than his fighting ability? It just didn’t make any sense to her, but such was the way of the world around her as much as she wanted to ignore that fact. She frowned gently but didn’t share her thoughts on the matter. Instead she nodded in solemn agreement with her new companion and let him move onto the matter at hand; weapons.

She listened as he spoke and nodded with each of his brief points about the general direction of the weapons shops. A big goofy grin slipped across her face at mention of their needing to head west. “Yes! Our Journey to the West!” She said as she moved closer to Haruka. She’d wanted to hook her arm with his again but he’d already begun walking - maybe he knew she was coming. Whatever the case Oomi quickly took off after him. “You would be Tripikata and I’d be Sun Wukong, we need to find a Zhu and Sha now. Mhm.” She nodded in agreement with herself. “What kind of weapon are you looking for? Is it a sword? No, you’d probably use a bow and arrow, huhn? No, no…” She looked him up and down. “I bet you use a spear! No. Kunai! A million Kunai and Senbon!” All guesses, she was just shouting out the weapons she knew the names of really.

As they continued through the Bazaar, even as Oomi spoke, her eyes wandered all around taking in all that they could. The place was so busy, so alive, so freaking huge. She’d been keeping a vague count of how many vendors and merchants she’d come across as they moved through the streets. She was surely in the hundreds by now. How exciting it was to be in a place like this. She’d definitely find some worthwhile things here that she could bring back to her Father’s shop in Iwagakure.

"I've thought about attempting to pick up a bow, yes; but I don't believe I have the physical strength for one. You are close with spears; I actually use staffs and staves, mostly; although I am decent enough with a dagger or kunai. Never was much for anything else, but growing up as I did you stuck to whatever was easiest to acquire and had the most utility. I could pick up a thick stick anywhere in the forest and replace it whenever I wanted; a kunai is an amazing utility knife and everyone has them, ninja and civilian alike." Calm words, a more... easy, conversation; he could keep up with this, and the bit of space between them as they moved was helpful for keeping him quiet.

"In an unrelated, or sort of un related note; you speak of food rather often. Have you tried the curry place... what was it called, Dragon's Tongue? I believe. I did, a few days ago. It was... amazing. They have an almost ramen dish there, I didn't try it but I saw it a few tables away; it was a curry dish, but they where using what looked to be soba (thick, flat buckwheat) noodles. You might be interested in it, if you find the time to wander that way."

The strong hints of spices and such was slowly growing on the winds; he could smell it due to sharp senses and training to detect weak smells and such, it was a very useful skill for someone in his profession. The right path, then. Given the various stalls were transitioning from retailers and shops to craftsmen and such... yeah. Hopefully they were coming in from the right side. Well, if nothing else, he could grab some candied fruits to snack on later on; it wasn't that strange for geisha to have small amounts of sweet treats and such on them, it made for good time with the clients, and that made the Madames happy.

"Are you a fan of spicy foods, or food in general?" Bouncy conversation was bouncy; in relation to topics. Weeeee.~
