“How long has it been since I last visited this place?” Kyohei thought to himself as he looked down from the rooftops on the remains of an old, fire damaged home, “So much has changed and yet this place remained exactly how we left it.” The ash blackened wood and stone that represented all that remained of Kyohei’s childhood home appeared as little more than shadows under the night sky, but as he looked upon it the young Uchiha could redraw every inch of the place he grew up in his mind from memory. He had consciously made an effort to avoid returning to this place since leaving it behind, seeing no reason to reopen old wounds, but of late those wounds had reopened all on their own. Visions of his life’s great tragedies had once again began to haunt his dreams, leaving his nights restless and dark.

He could feel his eyes growing more and more powerful by the day, and with that power came… a hunger. The life of piece that he had once tried to lead, distancing himself from the prison that was his past, was no more. The presence of Orochi Enaka and Kyohei’s recent involvement in his Black ANBU all but assured that. Everything about that man was shrouded in darkness, but there was one thing that Kyohei knew to be certain, even through all of the masks and mystery surrounding Enaka’s true intentions: Nothing would ever be able to return to the way it was, Kyohei would never find peace as long as Enaka lived upon this earth.

In order to remedy the disease upon this world that was the Orochi regent however, Kyohei needed to become more powerful. Discarding the power of his bloodline as nothing more than a coincidence at birth, not a defining art of his being, was a path he could no longer afford to work. He had told himself that he would not be a slave to his name, that he did not need to plunge himself completely into the darkness of the hate curse that lurked in the darkest recesses of every Uchiha’s spirit to be strong. For so many years he had believed that to be true and still did… but simply strong was no longer enough. The piece that he thought he had created for himself through his strength was nothing more than an illusion. The world he lived in was still one of war and hatred and the longer he spent hiding from that fact, pretending he could escape, the worse it would become.

The path he now needed to walk was clear. The darkness that he once turned his back on would become his savior. He would truly embrace the accursed power of the Uchiha for the first time in his life and in doing so the chains that bound him to the limitations of “shinobi” would be severed.  The hatred of the Uchiha would become his liberator and in his liberation his flames would purify this world. There would be no shadow or burrow deep enough for even a snake to seek shelter in. And so, with hesitant footsteps he would march forward towards the abandoned home, returning to where it all began.

Stepping over a protrusion of burnt, partly splintered wood Kyohei would make his way to the center of what used to be his home. As he looked around he saw nothing that remained of his previous life here, but in the shadows he could clearly see glimpses of what once was, his memories dancing hauntingly all around him as he stood in silence. Although he knew it was not to be, he found himself almost in disbelief of how real his own mind could make things seem. Clear as day he could see younger versions of himself and his sister scampering about and his mother in the dining room doing whatever it was she did that he found too dreadfully boring to ask her about in life. Another man might have shed a tear at the sight of everything he once held dear being dangled out in front of him once more, but there was not a tear to be shed in Kyohei’s body. Grief was an emotional luxury that the person he had become did not have a taste for.

Weary of these reminders of his past the Uchiha would push those thoughts aside. Pleasant memories were not what he came here for. Comfort would only breed weakness, not power. Solemnly he would look skyward, catching glimpses of the star riddled night sky through broken holes in the ceiling. Through the chaos that his life had become he had not before noticed how still the night was. For once in a very long while Kyohei’s world was silent, not a pang of grief or tell of a battle cry to be found. Only now that he had finally stopped for a moment did he feel the refreshing, cool sensation of his metal armor, chilled by the night air.

That silence and refreshing chill would not last long. As Kyohei closed his eyes the silence that once engulfed him would be broken by a loud crashing sound, followed by a familiar scream… an all too familiar scream. As the Uchiha opened his eyes he would find himself surrounded by flames in a rebuilt house, burning debris floating down around him. If it was not his good memories that he sought out here, then it appeared he had found what he was looking for. He would turn towards the front door and huff anxiously as he awaited for what he knew was coming.

How interesting it was that a simple trip back to this place made him remember so vividly one of the memories he had done his best to distance himself from for all of these years. This was the last day he had ever spent in this home and a day that would change the course of his life forever, in more ways than one. Perhaps there were some things that could not be erased, no matter how much one wished it. Kyohei had told himself that he would stay away, leaving behind the person he once was… and now that he once again needed to adapt to survive, this house, this monument to his life’s tragedies was what held the key to his future.

Thud. Thud. Thud. Crack.

The front door shook violently each time the unseen force on the other side struck it, finally forcing its way through on the fourth impact. In the now open doorway stood the familiar faces of two men that Kyohei had come to know all too well. He stood his ground as they stepped forward in his direction, placing a hand on the handle of the kunai that was fastened to his waist. He felt his blood begin to boil inside him as his rage grew, his teeth gritted all the while. As they continued to trudge forward he would draw the weapon with a backhanded grip, taking an aggressive stance towards the two men only to be completely ignored as they phased right through him.

“Get it together, Kyohei,” he hissed to himself as he realized how worked up he was getting over what was nothing more than a projection of his own memories. He had seen this exact sequence of events play out before. He had lived through them. Having suppressed and pushed away any association he still had to this place years ago he did not expect the effects of being forced to relive the event would have on his current self to be so pronounced. His anger still lingering, Kyohei would slip the kunai back into place before turning around to continue looking through this window to his own past.

Out from the back of the house Kyohei would see a younger version of himself come storming out to confront the men, accompanied by his sister. He would glare at this younger version of himself harshly, almost a disgusted sneer sitting upon his face. Even back then the anger in his eyes was evident for those that knew what to look for, but Kyohei could barely stand the sight of his old self. It was not a mistake that Kyohei kept no childhood pictures of himself or his family. Where others say nothing more than a child, he saw nothing but a failure. Throughout all of these years one idea remained steadfast in the Uchiha’s beliefs, if he had been stronger he could have prevented it… all of it. Young age was not an excuse for weakness. There was no excuse, only blame to be had and one of the drawbacks of revenge is that when there is no one left for the avenger to blame, the only place for it to go is on themselves.

The Uchiha would resist the urge to close his eyes or look away from what was to come, instead forcing himself to look on, in his mind playing each word and action from memory just as they were playing out in front of him. His younger self would demand an answer from the men, only to be met with the explanation that their drunk of a father had once again racked up a gambling debt, this time one too large for him to simply work off. Their boss demanded payment, but there were no valuables left in this home. What their father had not lost or broken in a drunken rage he had already pawned off to fuel his addictions. There was nothing left for them to take… or so he thought.

As despicable and disappointing as their father’s behavior had become, the Uchiha children would not expect to hear what was to come next from the intruders’ mouths. As it turned out there was something of value still remained in their home, valuable enough to be used to pay off their father’s debt. Kyohei’s eyes would remain trained on his younger self as he waited to see his own reaction to the revelation that his sister had been bargained away in his father’s latest act of desperation. Even if their father had fallen into despair since the passing of their mother, the children never would have expected that. Kyohei remembered vividly the shock he felt upon hearing them say it. He didn’t want to believe it at first, but he knew the men were not there making a joke. Their father had finally fallen so far as to forsake his own children to feed his addiction.

There was a dark and heavy silence in the room as each of the four people involved each had different reactions to the situation, but Kyohei was only worried about his own. His younger self would clench his teeth and ball both hands into fists, shaking as his eyes glared at the men. Kyohei would examine his younger self’s eyes carefully, taking note of the single black tomoe that appeared in his crimson eyes. How long had it been since he had looked at a reflection of himself and saw only one tomoe? Not since this very night that had resurfaced from his own memory. What would happen next was already known to him, but all the Uchiha could do was close his eyes and listen on.

He took in the loud stomping of his past self recklessly charging towards the two men, blinded by rage as if he could have done something to stop them in his current state. That stomping would be followed immediately by the loud, crashing thud of him hitting the floor, easily bested by the older men, and then a loud crack as one of their boots broke his jaw. He remembered that feeling well, one of defeat absolute hopelessness. It was one he would vow to himself he would never feel again. One of the men would then grab his sister, bruising her arm with his violent grip and eventually pulling her by her hair as she resisted. The sound of her scream would pull Kyohei back from the darkness he was fading into, the burning fire inside of him casting aside the shadows and instead filling him with rage and hate.

He did not know it at the time, but that anger he felt and that surge of power was brought about by his own chakra that had undergone a change. Shaped and hardened by his anger his chakra evolved, enhancing his eyes in the process. Fueled by rage and adrenaline, the young Kyohei reclaimed control of his battered and broken body. This time however, the thought at the forefront of his mind was not saving his sister, but hurting these men... as badly as he could, no matter what the cost. With his movement prediction abilities enhanced by the evolution of his eyes the strikes that had previously caught him off guard became slow and predictable. A katon jutsu that missed its mark would soon set the house alight, but Kyohei would not relent as his childhood home began to burn and crumble around him.

A splintered piece of wood from a fallen support beam would be Kyohei’s weapon of choice, driving it into the throat of one of the men as he tried to flee the burning building. Lost in his anger however, Kyohei was not satisfied with merely killing him. He would stab the already lifeless corpse repeatedly, ignoring all else as he savored his revenge, and in his blindness the second man would strike the back of his head with a blunt object, putting the young Uchiha out cold.

Present day Kyohei would open his eyes once more after coming to the conclusion of the scene that had played out before him, once more revealing the burned down, abandoned remains of the place he once called home. The ghosts of his past had once again receded into the darkest depths of his memories, held captive once more by the locks he had put in place. What he just experienced however, was not a moment of nostalgia of remembrance. That was not his own mind playing tricks on him. No, this was far too real to be a simple memory invoked by his own sentimentality. The ghosts that still roamed these halls were illusions, brought on by someone… or something else. It appeared as though he had found what he was looking for after all.

Slowly Kyohei would step deeper into the abandoned building, back towards the room that used to serve as his father’s study. This room also happened to be the place where his father would host important members of the Uchiha Clan from Konohagakure and beyond on occasion. This was not a coincidence. And up until only a year prior, Kyohei had no idea of what truly lied in wait beneath his abandoned childhood home, built on the outskirts of the city in what was once the Uchiha Military Police compound. Kyohei’s father always was the kind of man that could be made to talk, one who would forego honor and duty in the face of his own mortality. One could argue that for such a man to have lived in as unforgiving a world as that of a shinobi, his cowardice must have been quite the survival tactic. After all, it had kept the men who had previously wanted something from him from killing him all this time. Unfotunately for him however, any information he spilt in fear was only a secondary prize for Kyohei. The contract demanded his father’s life… and if it gave Kyohei the perfect opportunity to exact his revenge all the better.

Upon entering the room Kyohei would circle around to behind his father’s desk, examining the flame damaged wooden piece thoroughly before allowing his eyes to wander down to the singed, frayed, and blackened area rug that sat just beneath the furniture. Raising his right knee high from the floor the Uchiha would rest the arch of his foot, covered by the thick black combat boots he wore, on the edge of the desk. Then, with a smirk, he would kick his leg outward rapidly, causing the desk to roll across the room, banging loudly as it pushed aside everything in its path. With that same foot, Kyohei would then dig beneath the curling edge of the area rug, kicking it up to reveal the area underneath.

“So he really could be honest with the right incentive,” Kyohei mused with a grin as he referred to his father from whom he had discovered this location, “I should have tried to kill him years ago.”

Removing the desk and area rug that covered up the floor would reveal an inconsistency in the flooring of the room, which Kyohei would instantly recognize. As one looked closer to the center of the room they would notice the old, worn out wooden flooring be cut off by what appeared to be a large, rectangular slab of stone. It bore no particular markings, and the edges seemed to be sealed into the floor as if it were an intended part of the home’s original design. Kyohei however, knew better and before long the anticipation of what awaited him made the hairs on the back of his neck stand. For once in his miserable life Kyohei’s father had came through for him.

One year earlier:

“No, please I’ll do whatever you want just let me go,” screamed Rintaro Uchiha as he found himself thrown violently into the wall of his motel room, cracking the drywall from the force of the impact, “What do you want from me? Money? I’ll get you your money I just need a little bit of time. If it’s information you want, I know people. I know things. I’ll tell you whatever you want to know.”

From the shadows a man would emerge, his face obscured by an oni mask, sinister chuckles echoing from within the porcelain veil. "You reek of cheap alcohol,” a voice spoke from behind the mask, “Why am I not surprised? Held up in a cheap motel room, drinking your problems away, most likely hiding from someone you owe money from one of your gambling binges, pathetically groveling for mercy like the coward you are… is this how far the once proud Uchiha has fallen? How amusing. Tell me Rintaro, what would your wife say if she saw you in this state? What would she say about the disgrace that you’ve become. Not that it matters. You probably would have traded her off by now, just like you did with your children.”

The look of fear in Rintaro’s eyes would morph into one of blind rage as he clumsily raised himself from the ground. “What would you know about her?!?” He called out angrily as he grabbed the open sake bottle sitting on the table beside his bed, “What would you know about anything!? Who are you?!?” He would then throw the bottle at his masked assailant angrily, tripping over himself and stumbling forward.

Almost as if he saw the action coming before it was completed the masked man would effortlessly sway out of the way of the flying sake bottle, allowing it to fly right past him and shatter against the wall behind him. Then, before the masked man would allow Rintaro Uchiha to fall to the ground in his drunken stupor he would catch him, pushing him up against the wall and impaling him into the wall with a long blade. Panic would once more set into Rintaro’s eyes as he realized he had been stabbed, but his mouth would soon be covered by the gloved hand of his assailant, shoving a fistful of pills into his mouth.

“Don’t worry, I purposefully avoided any immediately lethal points,” the masked man would say calmly, “I can’t let you go yet. We have so much left to talk about, father.” Pulling the mask from his face, the man would reveal himself to be the young Kyohei. “That’s why I had you swallow those sedatives,” Kyohei would continue, “We need to get you nice and relaxed before we continue. Don’t worry, you’re still going to die. I’ll reunite you with your wife, just like you always wanted… but not before you tell me everything.”
