Reina

D-rank
Reina peered into the abandoned mine.

She had been tasked to retrieve a set of raw metals for Kirigakure's smiths for the continued forging of the village's armoury of weapons. It seemed like a mediocre task, having been ranked D, but it was necessary to the growth and continued prosperity of Kiri nonetheless. After all, having no raw metals equals no weapons, leaving Kiri somewhat defenseless in the face of danger. In a way, the Genin were given a vital role to play in Kiri's daily self-sufficiency, which was an intense amount of trust placed on the Genin's shoulders.

Some had said the mine was haunted. It warned in the mission briefing that the mine was considered by many to be haunted in some way. The various Genin who returned from previous undertakings of this mission reported different sightings, all of them ghostly with a touch of the supernatural. Some said they entered the mines and the metals had floated right into their hands. Others said a translucent figure had floated to greet them as they picked said raw metals from the deep excesses of the mines.

Reina, on the other hand, didn't believe them. She refused to believe them. She wouldn't disillusion herself that she was brave enough to take on any ghosts that came her way, so she merely disillusioned herself with the fact that ghosts did not exist. It didn't matter that occurrences of all natures happened day after day – walking on water, breathing fire, and whatnot – she still did not believe in ghosts. The previous accounts could be credited to ninjutsu, but having a spirit wandering the lands was just unfathomable. To her, at least.

She took a few steps into the mine and stopped, just to be sure. She peered into the darkness, trying to find any momentary shifts in hue. She perked her ears to listen out for anything out of the ordinary – anything apart from the birds chirping outside and the ghostly yet explainable howl the wind was making. It wasn't that she was doubting herself and suspecting that ghosts existed at the last minute, but it was just to be on the safe side. If there really were ghosts she wanted to make sure she was ready for them. Well, if they could be hurt by chakra, that is. She was still wondering why she had yet to frequent the items shop for ninja necessities.

Satisfied with the lack of the supernatural, she made her way deeper into the cave, following the directions the smiths had given. Credibility to their story had been strengthened when she had asked the villagers staying on the mainland, so she was confident she wouldn't get lost. Dying from hunger in an abandoned mine would have been so much worse than having a ghost haunt her being.

She reached a deep part of the cave, where several mine carts were strewn about, some on their sides and overturned. The railway tracks had all but been covered by the various landslides that had closed down the mind, and it was a miracle some of the carts were even in as good a condition as they were. Reina was fortunate some previous traveller had lit the cave, and she went to search for some of the ores the smiths would have needed.

Just as she picked up the last of the ores she needed, a ghostly sound made itself known. It wasn't the wind, for she would have felt something of that degree. No, it was something else.

The sound came again, and Reina dropped the ores, trying her best not to shake in fright.

'Ghosts aren't real, ghosts aren't real, ghosts aren't real,' she thought to herself.

Just then, she heard a sneeze that sounded somewhat child-like, and found her courage returning. Following the sound, she came behind a rock, where a boy was attempting to make another ghostly sound.

Eyes narrowed, she picked him up by the collar.

“You know, ninja kill as a living.”

The boys eyes widened, and he went into a frenzy of words, most of which she could make out as 'sorry'. She let go of his collar, dropping him on his bottom, and watched him scramble away quickly deeper into the mine. She shook her head and berated herself for ever losing her composure and believing that such things as ghosts existed, before picking up the dropped ores and leaving the mine.

If only she had stayed longer, she would have noticed two figures rise from the ground and watch her leave.

“Think we should tell her about us?”

“Nah, let them think we don't exist. Frightening them gets so much more fun.”
