Pets (忍獣, Ninjū\Ninja Beasts) are animals used throughout the Shinobi world to aid ninjas in combat or provide support through scouting and techniques. Throughout history, shinobi have used animal companions to enhance their repertoire, and this is no different today. Most well known for their use of Ninjū are Konohagakure’s famous Dog Shinobi and Inuzuka Clan, but the use of pets exists across the world. In contrast to summons, who require contracts and chakra, and puppets, which require the use of chakra strings, pets are Companions who are always by a ninja’s side, making them an invaluable tool for shinobi to take advantage of both in and out of combat.
Pets can be acquired when a Ninja is of any rank, however they are always purchased for 2000 ryo, and begin at E-rank. Pets may only be trained to one rank below the Ninja Rank of their owner, except in the case of shinobi who possess the Animal Affinity Special Characteristic. Pets use the same statistics as their ninja counterparts, capable of matching the potential of their masters through the same rigorous training that shinobi undertake. All pets begin with a single free Specialization and Element slot which may be trained as any Specialization or Element known by their owner (Training for pet Specs/Elements is the same as Shinobi). Pets receive an additional Specialization and Element slot which may be trained in the same manner once they reach B-rank. Upon reaching S-rank, a pet unlocks a final, tertiary Specialization of their own which may be trained whether their owner possesses the desired Specialization or not. In addition to training a Pet’s stats and techniques, each pet must be ranked up by fulfilling the rank-up requirements for its rank, which is equal to two missions of the pet’s rank or higher (these additional missions may not count toward a Ninja’s rank-up requirements). Ridable pets capable of being used as mounts begin at A-rank.
Broadly speaking, Ninja Pets fall into two categories: Combat Pets, strong and quick, capable fighters, and Support Pets with deeper chakra reserves and jutsu prowess. Combat pets may only learn a maximum of three techniques equal to their rank, five of the rank below, and have no limit on the amount of techniques two or more ranks below that they can learn. Support pets may learn five techniques equal to their rank, and have no limit on the number of techniques they may learn below their rank. Neither combat or support pets may learn S-rank or SS-rank techniques. Conversely, a Combat Pet may have its Stats trained to equal its rank, with an additional 4 tiers of training above the base tier for its rank, while Support Pets gain no additional tiers above the base for their rank and may not train their Speed, Strength or Endurance Stats higher than C-rank (Reaction Time and Perception may be trained to the base tier of their rank, and no higher).
Like shinobi, Pets benefit from the same rules of Combat, including the Combat Incentives for Training Reduction and Chakra Pool increases. This means that they also benefit from the Lethal Damage Threshold. In the case of a pet’s death, they may be redeemed for retirement rewards as if they were one rank lower where applicable. Pets can be applied for using the Pet Template as an item, note that all pets begin at E-rank. Once they are approved, they are displayed at the top of your locker. Pet training is applied for in the owner's respectve training registeries (Elements, Specs, Stats).
