H I S T O R Y

Within the small Land of Rice lie a particular and peculiar people. Often fair of hair, with reds and whites seeming denser here than anywhere else in the world, nobody is quite sure why these peculiar people are the way they are. Perhaps most interesting is that, among their ranks, there is a technique known only to them. Some whisper of genetic experiments, others of long-lost and forbidden arts, more still claim that some old, forgotten, ancestor developed this technique. Wherever it comes from, the people of the Land of Rice excel in the art of sound manipulation in all its forms.

The Land of Rice seems to be almost alone in its ability. From the noblest sage to the lowest brigand, many ninja of this country seem to possess the art of sound and vibration manipulation, and use it to great effect in an awe-inspiring variety of ways. Despite the wide range of people who can use it in this country, it is virtually unknown beyond its borders, seemingly all users that are outside having their origin among the flooded paddies.

Whoever it was that pioneered this technique, their ability has since spread well beyond their name. Nobody can pin any exact surname to the advent of this ability, and some have become respected clans in their own right. To substitute the forgotten origins, those who lack a more immediate name for use have dubbed it the Sarata, named after the land in which it originates.

Those bearing the blood technique of the Sarata, those many denizens of the Land of Rice, are able to create, manipulate, distort, amplify, and dull sound and sound waves to a great many effects. Nobody is certain exactly what constitutes this style, with some claiming it is an innate ability of Wind, others say Yin, more state that it is a fundamental element in itself. Whatever it is, those who express this ability don't necessarily need to excel in any given base element to utilize this ability.

Sound Release | Onton 音遁

Sound Release is the art of the fine manipulation of vibrations. The user infuses chakra into the environment to alter wavelength, frequently, and intensity of vibrations, often with the goal of manipulating sounds to be deafening and piercing, or to be muffled and silent. Moreover, chakra-infused vibrations can be used as the trigger for genjutsu, for sonic detection, or to disturb the trajectory and momentum of incoming attacks.

Benefits:


  • Interacts with Suiton as if it were one rank higher

  • Inherently invisible

  • Use of remote range, the range of jutsu can be pinned to a catalyst away from the user, as long as the catalyst can produce sound within a self-contained mechanism (such as a bell). The remote catalyst must be within the linear range of the same value as the radius to be activated. (So, if an Onton jutsu has a mid-value radius range, it can be remotely activated via a catalyst from a distance away equal to that rank's mid-value linear range).

  • Vibration-based sensory techniques are able to detect through invisibility and can see muffled areas as negative space.

  • Defaults to bruising damage, as fire does to burning.

E F F E C T S


Offensive:

Offensive Onton is largely similar to blunt damage to a point, though there are some added effects. The effect Disorientation can be optionally applied as a free effect to pack an extra punch by lowering the Dexterity of the victim, but comes at a cost of inflicting Reverb which prevents the target from being damaged by Onton for the duration of the effect. The minimum effect always includes Disorientation and Reverb taking the maximum duration of the previous rank. The length of Disorientation is chosen upon activation of the jutsu, and in an application, the maximum duration should be listed as such. Disorientation does not require a drawback other than Reverb.



Defensive:

Defensive Onton relies primarily on the manipulation of vibrations to create crude, nonphysical barriers. The nonphysical nature of these shields causes them to upset the trajectory and momentum of, rather than block, incoming strikes. The strength of this disruption is reliant on the rank of the jutsu, and thus attacks of sufficient power can overcome the technique.

Defensive Onton can 'soften' blows by lowering the damage value by a fixed number of tiers set at the creation of the jutsu. The minimum value for a jutsu decreases the impact by one tier of damage, the medium value decreases by two tiers, and maximum value decreases by three tiers. If the jutsu is at least full rank higher than the attack, then it can negate the attack entirely. The jutsu will be dispelled after blocking a maximum of two jutsu of equal rank, or equivalent translation from lower ranks.



Sensory:

Sensory Onton is reliant on the premise of sonar: using sound waves and vibrations, and the disruptions thereof, to scan the immediate environment. All sensory Onton are reliant upon this sense of vibration detection, distinct from but related to hearing, for function. Due to the nature of sensory Onton in sensing irregularities and disturbances rather than relying on traditional senses, it can ignore invisibility (which, as long as the subject has mass, would still produce disturbances) and muffling (which would cause a 'gap' or irregularity, able to be found through 'negative space') in accordance with standard guideline rules with regards to focusing on individual or multiple targets. Sensory Onton are, as with all Onton, limited to radius-based ranges and require a catalyst.

Characters who are part of the Sarata clan need not adopt any common surname, and do not necessarily have close familial relations with one another; however, Sarata characters must originate from the Land of Rice regardless of current residence.

so first question:is this an element or a sub-element? you mention that it is thought to be wind, though in other places you mention it as an element of its own. If it is, write it as such in a concise template like the other elements like this one for katon:
Fire Release | Katon 火遁

Fire Release is the art of molding a superheated volatile chakra into the user’s techniques causing a variety of effects usually resulting in destructive combustion and explosive damage to a target or area. Difficult to focus, but raw and powerful, Katon jutsu are able to ignite flammable material, but can also come in the form of scolding ash, gel-like napalm, volatile gas or powders which can be ignited into potentially vast explosions with little more than a well placed spark.

if not, note that it is a subtype that is applied on top of another element and how it changes the interactions.

the disorientation template should have both its own effect, as well as the "reverb" written together since they are always applied together.

the defensive bit seems more like an effect you would just put onto defensive jutsu you app, rather than being listed as part of the clan, if you would like a specific effect to be put onto defensive jutsu write it as a template or clause that can be easily read. My confusion is coming mostly from the "soften the blow" bit, when it says it reduced the damage value, does that apply to when a technique breaks through? when it is redirected and hits something else? when it just hits you?

the sensory bit needs simplification. (also needs to refer to the jutsu as either onton or sub-typed with it based on how you decide to edit that). A sensory jutsu or ability that has "Sound" or "hearing" as the descriptor will never be effected by a stealth technique such as "invisibility" unless it specifically has the effect of making no noise. the bit about muffling would be fine, such as if someone has a jutsu that "muffles sound in a 15 meter radius" you could "hear" the area of that void. Mostly the issue here is that sensory is so descriptor based that having a clan effect on interactions needs to be fairly specific. As such, i would like to see the "hard of hearing" special characteristic to be applied unless the clan member is using a sound based sensory technique. Also i think the clan member should be required to take both of the negative SCs
