Kirei
B-rank
With the setting sun draining away into the horizon, the last trickles of orange light weren't much longer for this world. Across the city, tall lanterns ignited one by one, doors closed and the frigid night-time cold crept over the streets. Kirei shivered as he walked, mentally cursing the useless, blithering chill. Even with his coat on, the Fire Shinobi already couldn't wait to get back to somewhere warm. All around, local businesses long closed up for the night, the rhythmic thrumming of bar songs and all night karaoke from an underground establishment 'The Alley Cat' was the only thing the boy saw as he rounded the street corner. It had gone dark so fast; when he and Yūji had wandered into a cafe for a post-dinner snack, it had been light out, and by the time they emerged the streets were empty save for shadows.
Whatever was coming from that bar as Kirei passed down the street sounded like a cat that much was sure. To a foreigner, the streets of the Mist Village looked utterly identical. Trying to stick to the broad central roads was helping a little, but without any point of reference, he was really only justifying his quest to become more lost. To the boy's side, the weary Yūji trotted along on all fours not nearly as perturbed by the cold as his human companion. The Hound found himself trying to track the streets by Kirei's scent, looking for places they'd been earlier in the day to guide them somewhere familiar. Unfortunately, the strong smell of fresh seafoam was a distraction for Yūji's senses to which he was still becoming accustomed. While the dog focused on his task, he heard Kirei muttering something about all-night bookstores. Fed up with the boy's nonsense after they'd wandered well into the waning dusk, Yūji let out a low growl to grab the boy's attention.
"We're lost, Kirei." he barked angrily "Let's find a phone and call the academy, they'll send an instructor to meet us."
"No c'mon, we can find our way back!"
"Absolutely not."
"It's near the center of town, right? Where is the administration building supposed to be, anyway?"
"You've been playing hooky since we got here, enough is enough."
"I bet if we got on the roof-tops we'd be able to just make a straight line into the city; I bet it'll be obvious which building is which."
"Stop ignoring me, Kirei."
"Okay, let's go!"
With a playful smirk, Kirei would be off in a run and leap towards an awning overhanging the street, gripping tightly and pulling himself up onto it before jumping again into the commercial rooftop. Rolling his eyes, Yūji would give chase, nimble canine frame easily able to scale the building and keep pace with his charge. If it hadn't been for Kirei's size, running across the rooftops with his black dog might have gotten him killed. His combination of Leaf Ninja colors and slight frame made him instantly recognizable as a visiting Genin.
Kirigakure did look beautiful at night, Kirei admitted. In spite of the cold causing him to exhale thick fog with every hurried breath, the city itself still had a mystery for Kirei that Konoha no longer possessed. With his arm strung taut on a third story roof, the Uchiha pulled hard and dragged his body onto the higher vantage point to look for some way home. His initial assumption that notable buildings would be easy to spot might have been the case for a local, but the tall buildings all looked the same to Kirei. In fact, getting the high ground had produced the opposite of his intended effect in that he was now completely turned around, and to make matters worse, it was even darker than before. He stifled a sigh, not yet content to admit defeat to his furry companion, and instead pretended to look around for several seconds longer before picking a direction at random.
Bouncing from foothold to foothold during his descent, Kirei kept the facade of determination strong, adamantly pretending he knew precisely where to go. When the duo finally dropped down again onto a wide road lined with tall buildings, Kirei grinned confidently towards his dog and set off towards the sound of distant inhabitance. Of course, Yūji's sense of hearing far eclipsed the boy's own, in fact, he had heard where they were approaching long before the familiar sound reached Kirei's ears. As he came around the bend, Kirei would be assaulted by the start of a new verse of all-night karaoke. His eyes trailed up the street sign, a tail ('no!'), paws ('please, no!'), and smiling cat's face.
"God damnit, Yūji, I think we're lost." Defeated, the boy would sit on his knees and put his hand on top of the dog's brow.
"You're an idiot, Kirei."
