1 Put to Work II [C-Rank Mission/Private] Fri May 15, 2015 11:19 pm
Yngol
D-rank
Guard duty again. Not even patrolling the outside of the village this time around. Yngol was stuck watching the rear gate. The gate that nobody ever used, the gate that was empty and lifeless most of the time. That was probably the reason that they were giving this assignment to genin straight out of the academy. Nobody wanted to do the dirty work. Things were getting quite ridiculous recently. The shit had been continuously palmed off on Yngol and he had done every thing he had been asked to do without complaint. How can anyone prove themselves on this environment? They don’t want to send the genin out on tougher missions because they don’t have enough experience in the field, yet the genin are unable to get any experience in the field because they are stuck picking up trash, watching empty gates or investigating titty bars. The system was broken, but Yngol really didn’t find himself in any position to complain. He was making easy ryo by doing easy work. Patience was the key to success.
There was a strange sense of tranquility that came from being alone at night, with nothing but the stars as company. As expected, the gate was empty. No signs of any threats whatsoever. Yngol sat on a bench nearby the gate, lying back and gazing at the stars. It was probably wrong to slack off the way that he was, but the chances of anything sneaking by the gates were extremely slim, and besides, he wasn’t being paid enough to pay close attention to his job. He would instead take this mission as a night off, kicking back and relaxing. Taking a moment to soak the world in as it span around him. Some day his name would be written among the stars that he gazed upon. Some day, But not this day. To get to the top, one must start from the bottom, even if the bottom is spending a night watching an empty gate.
A good few hours had passed and the night was beginning to chill. The breeze nipped at Yngol’s skin, sending an unwelcome chill down his spine. He grumbled to himself. It was getting late, hours passed the time that any man should be awake at. Nothing was happening at the gate. Nobody entered, nobody exited. The rear gate was actually a rather useless part of the village. It was rarely used, ever. The road to it came from nowhere, the road out of it lead to nowhere. Nobody had any good reason to use the gate, so by Yngol’s logic, there was no need for him to be sat outside in the freezing cold staring into nothingness for hours on end, without anything to entertain himself with. Time seemed to slow down, the universe was taunting him. Seconds felt like minutes, minutes felt like hours. Yngol could almost see the world turning around him as he sat in silence, waiting for something, anything, to happen. It was almost at the point where he was hoping for a full scale invasion, just so he’d have something to pass the time with.
