Morning

Nil patiently awaited the arrival of one of his family members his grandfather had informed him about, a Raiu Mizuki, if he was correct. The exact relation she was to Nil was still..... uncertain to say the least but Nil was always happy to meet new people, and a family member especially! Nil's small, happy smile dimmed as he remembered what else he had heard about her however. He swallowed thickly, thinking on how she too had experienced loss just as Nil had. That was why, clasped in his small, pale hands in front of him, he held a fruit basket filled to bursting with exotic, flavorful treats he had grown fond of. From imported sweet melon of a bright orange color to more tangy purple-hued grapes to some more locally sourced mandarins, setoka and kabosu.

Nil furtively shuffled from foot to foot, eager beyond words to meet a family member as skill as Mizuki was purported to be. From what he understood she was a kind, and very dutiful, person. He hoped they would get along and, even, be friends as well as family. Nil inhaled sharply as he glanced around the open courtyard his once-instructor had used to train him in the very basics of the Shinobi arts. The plants that sat astride the raised training platform, just outside of the shade the compound's wall cast so they could get proper sunlight, were in full bloom with the seasons. While the sun overhead was blazing brightly in the sky without being oppressively hot just yet. But that would come later Nil was sure of it, the temperature never stayed moderate for long regardless of what season it was changing to.

Nil's attention was suddenly perked, and his inward reverie broken, when he heard the door to the courtyard open. Standing more properly at attention, Nil couldn't help but beam a smile at his cousin, eyes twinkling with eager and friendly intent. Nil didn't move until Mizuki had familiarized herself with her surroundings, but was maybe a bit too eager as he approached her, only reminding himself he wasn't simply giving her a gift when he bowed to her and offered her the fruit basket. His smile falling as he remembered why he had it to begin with and, restraining his voice to something more somber he spoke. "Mizuki-Sensei. It's very nice to meet you. Umm.... thank you so much for coming to train with me. I.. wanted to apologize for your loss." Nil glanced up at the older Raiu, his features flushing in embarrassment at his clumsy greeting and broaching of such a personal topic.

Nil averted his stormy grey blue eyes as his thin arms shook softly while he offered the basket, his nerves getting the better of him a bit before the young Raiu bit his lip and looked up at her. His arms stilling as his tone and expression became more remorseful and, strangely, understanding. "I..... I understand...." was all he could whisper as he set the basket down between them and off to the side a bit. Staying bowed politely to his senior as he motioned vaguely toward the basket, the action causing his over-sized kimono to slip low on one shoulder, causing the excessive bandaging wrapping his midsection to become visible as it constricted Nil's lithe, small form and pale skin. His tone becoming smaller, more flustered, as he stared at the fruit basket to avoid awkwardly gazing at Mizuki."When... When grandfather told me about.... a-about what you had experienced I picked you some fruits I like. I didn't know what you might prefer but... they're sweet and... and nice...they... help. At least they did for me....." One of Nil's hands subconsciously clutched his sternum as he grimaced, returned his gaze to the worked stone ground, and went silent. Sincerely hoping he had not offended Mizuki. While she may have been Nil was not wise enough to be considered a diplomat of any sort.

"Please, teach the boy."

It had not been too long ago when those words were brought forward with a bow denoting deep respect. It had taken aback the young woman that one of her own clan would almost seem to beg for her to become his mentor. Though she wondered why there was a need for such formalities or why exactly his former mentor had left their service, Mizuki politely kept those questions to herself and instead accepted the request while bowing in return. The Raiu Dojo had barely reopened under her supervision, the responsible sensei still setting things up again now that she had decided to focus on Kumogakure's well-being rather than wandering the world as a diplomat, but the quick increase in requests was almost suffocating. Was this the level of reputation her father held all this time, or was there an other reason for them to join the dojo? Certainly it could not be her own reputation, tarnished by years-long service under Miyamoto Hastur as his Herald. Even if she had skill, reputations such as this were like dirt that easily rubbed off onto others supposedly impeccable reputation. Yet... Such was the reality, against all expectations,  of the Raiu Dojo these days. A busy place with more students than she could handle on her own.

As requested, she was now moving to the clan compound where her newest student, Raiu Nil, awaited her. He supposedly had an interested in ninjutsu and genjutsu, one specialisation she had never touched upon, and had inherited the storm chakra as was regularly the case with the members of their prestigious bloodline. The light blue fabric of her qipao danced with the playful wind, revealing the white cotton trousers underneath it. Wrapped around her waist, like a belt to keep the qipao dress in place, was the purple cotton cord of her trusted katana, Seiun, which properly positioned the blade for a quick draw capable of cutting a falling blossom in equal halves. A similar purple coloured ribbon was wrapped around her hair, keeping her lustrous black hair bound together. Her hands would find the door that lead to the courtyard where the Raiu had agreed to meet.

Her blue-green eyes would set on a familiar yet long-since visited area, measuring the changes that had happened throughout the years of her absence. Healthy plants, new flowers and the typical jacaranda trees that also lead the path towards the Raiu Dojo were enjoying the warmth of an early sun as much as the jounin did. And somewhere between them stood a young boy at the attention with a basket of fruits. When Mizuki neared, he bowed to her with certain joy and eagerness, unlocking a smile from the young woman all the while, and handed her the basket as thanks and in condolences. Bowing in turn to him, she accepted the basket.

"Thank you, Nil-san. Your gifts of kindness are much appreciated."

While she couldn't remember if anyone had ever shared empathy for her loss - other than the passing of Kaminari Siri, most were unaware of her father's death as he had died high up in the mountains of Kumogakure. The unusual absence was something that had come to be accepted and eventually had been believed to be a missing in action until Mizuki herself had come to confirm his passing to the clan. Yet, while the young woman had come to terms with the loss of her parents, Nil seemed to have a harder time with that thought.

Raising her posture again, she noticed the young boy still standing bowed forward. Softly speaking as he attempted to bring over an overwhelming empathy which threatened to drown his own senses while finding the proper words to explain her what he meant without being rude. Touched by his kindness and innocence, she'd take a step forward and crouch so as to adjust his over-sized kimono properly, gently yet firmly closing the cloth and making sure it would not slip open as easily any longer. Almost like a mother making sure her kid was properly dressed up for the harsh world outside.

"All blossoms end up falling but as long as we cherish the beautiful moments they brought us, we should not linger upon their loss. So why don't you show me which fruit's one of the better ones, hm? And take one for yourself as well. It won't hurt to share some fruit as we get to know each other. It is better to greet the day with a smile than a tear, after all."

She'd wait for his answer with an encouraging smile before rising back to her feet and taking a peek at the basket he had given her. There were quite a few exotic fruits in there piquing her interest. The sort she'd certainly enjoy throughout the day, as the Raiu quite stood on a healthy diet. Not that the lissomely shaped jounin was that concerned about her weight what with the plenty of exercise shinobi life brought her, but health was an important aspect in life nonetheless. She'd then pick one of the 'better' fruits Nil would speak about, waiting for him to pick something too, and set the basket aside and out of harm's way.

"Congratulations on your genin rank, Nil-kun. You must be proud about finishing the academy lessons. What do you wish to achieve now that you're an official Kumo-nin?", she'd ask before taking a taste of the fruit she held.

Mizuki's kind words were much appreciated by the younger Raiu, his posture relaxing and unwinding notably. Her polite, yet kind, tone did wonders to help him feel more reassured at his gesture of kindness. Even so Nil was...... unprepared for Mizuki to step forward, crouch down before him, and adjust his kimono for him. Even his own mother didn't do that. It felt....personal. His father having gotten him this kimono for him, originally, to begin wearing once Nil became a Jonin. But after he passed Nil had refused to wait, insisting that he be allowed to wear it, as it was something he felt very personally attached to. He almost hadn't realized how attached to the simple garment he had become.

Nil's pale cheeks flushed a bright, if mottled, pink as he blushed. The older Raiu's words making his chest constrict and breathing grow heavier. Her words were very kind, doting even, and he could only nod before she asked him to show her which of the fruits he enjoyed. Naive as he was Nil didn't realize that the question was likely just to change the subject, likely for both their sake. Nil smiled, nodded once more, and moved over to the fruit basket. Nil hummed as he knelt beside the basket, chewing on his lip as he tried to decide what he thought Mizuki would like best.

Nil finally decided on a slice of orange melon from the east, they were sweet and watery, without being too sweet and citrus tasting. Nil then carried the piece of melon over to Mizuki and respectfully offered it to her. Smiling once again. Nil then procured a piece for himself and sat before Mizuki, happily nomming away at the piece of fruit before blinking as Mizuki asked him what he wanted to be trained in. This made Nil swallow thoughtfully, licking his lips as he hummed before biting them, eyes averted at the affectionate suffix as he wiggled in sheepish enjoyment. It took him a moment to think of how to properly word what came to mind, but when it did Nil responded.

"Well, I umm.... really I don't know Mizuki-Sama. My... My previous trainer didn't normally allow me to choose. He simply decided on what fundamental we would be rehearsing that day." Nil finished his piece of fruit and, reaching over to the basket, removed a piece of clothe and wiped his hands clean before offering one to Mizuki. His hands moving down to grasp his crossed ankles as he leaned forward slightly, rocking a bit in an idle motion as he smiled brightly up at her. A sudden eager, if a little mischievous, twinkle lighting up the young Raiu's eyes in a way that almost seemed to make the light blue fissures, shaped like bolts of lightning, shine amidst the normal stormy grey of his eyes. His smile quickly growing to a bright, cherry grin as he asked. " Could.... Could you maybe show me some more about our bloodline ability? I... I don't know much about it. I... really only know one jutsu for it." Nil admitted with no small amount of timidity as he hunched his shoulders, eyes falling sheepishly to the ground as a soft, embarrassed flush once again lit up his normally pale cheeks. His voice coming forth now in a more reserved, less eager tone as his smile vanished into his embarrassed countenance.

"My grandfather has told me about the history of our Clan, but he's too busy to train with me since... since father passed. When... he and mother talk it.... it's obvious he didn't plan to still overseeing the clan for much longer and now....." Nil paused, his tone fading away as he shrugged a tiny, almost hollow shrug. His voice taking on a more and more quiet demeanor. "Now he has to wait for me to grow up. So that I can succeed him." Nil looked up at her, eyes wide and perhaps a bit lost looking to the more experienced woman. Nil suddenly jumped, his flush burning out all the way to the tips of his ears before he shook his head, his voice coming out slightly flustered and squeaky in a way only a boy his age's could. " I-I am sorry Mizuki-sama I didn't.... didn't mean to... be like that. Ummm.... maybe just some more about Storm Release, please?"

Not wanting to be the cause for delaying the training any longer, either verbally or physically, Nil would rise to his feet. His hands held passively at his sides as he began to regulate his breathing, focusing his mind and thoughts on mastering whatever new ability Mizuki felt he was prepared, or was necessary, to learn. A small pang of nervous uncertainty fluttering over his stomach like butterflies made of pure static electricity as Nil became keenly aware of the fact that this was his first time training with someone other than the trainer he had grown up learning from. He hoped that, if nothing else, he didn't disappoint Mizuki.

She was offered a piece of orange melon and took a bite out of it after accepting it. The sweet taste unlocked a smile, the young woman somewhat of a sweet-tooth behind all the healthy business. Just to enjoy something of the sort once a while but never long enough to crave it. As she ate up her piece of fruit she listened to the genin's answer to her question. He had received basic training, like all academy students. A training set in stone, as there were never any negotiations when it came to the shaping of youngsters into promising genin. Picking up the basics on ninjutsu and its various applications was a necessity, yet it seemed Nil was surprised that he was now allowed more freedom to determine his own path. No longer limited to the mandatory basics, being a genin was about developing his own latent talents rather than understanding or discovering them.

"Everyone had to go through the basics. I did so too. They are there to teach you about ninjutsu and serve to discover your natural affinity. It is not uncommon for Raiu to have an affinity towards chakra manipulation considering the need to control our advanced release, but you are hardly limited to that. I consider myself to have an affinity for bukijutsu, for example. Applying chakra manipulation to varying weapons and general combat stratagems."

Finishing her own piece of fruit, she'd clean her hands to the towel as well and rise to her feet in response to his question about storm mastery. It was a first time for her to teach others about Storm Release that didn't involve sweeping up a storm and sending the hurt upon her enemies. She stepped away from the boy to give herself some room, listening to his story about his grandfather. With his father gone, the burden to lead the clan befell him much like the responsibility of running the dojo rested on her shoulders. She could see some familiarity with her protegee Kyousuke, also an heir to his clan, but where this kid had lost his father and had withdrawn into his own shell, Kyousuke seemed to be overly confident in comparison. Two opposites needing to grow towards the same position; one requiring temperance, the other courage.

"My condolences, Nil-kun. I'll do my best to fill in where your grandfather is lacking time. I'm sure that he has only the best interest in your growth, so please do not see his absence for a lack of desire to be with you. Any position of leadership is a difficult one. But we'll see to it that you'll be ready to lead by the time you are old enough to take the reigns.", she'd wait a moment for her words to sink in, waiting for a sign on his side to understand what she was saying. Him rising to his feet would denote he understood the burden of responsibility, or rather, the need to train hard to achieve the proper strength to carry it and so she started the first course of their lesson as he had suggested - Storm Release.

"Our advanced release is one of great control. Without discipline, you'll never achieve the mastery required to wield it in a fashion that will leave our enemies sufficiently daunted by its power.", she started, altering the weather to darkening clouds with a few hand seals. The air cooled, the sky darkened on a very local base. Dark clouds pregnant with rain ready to wet the earth hung low above them. "This is one of the forms Storm Release tends to take, a form not all that popular for few see the power within a wildly raging storm, but...", extending her hand, it'd seem as if she attracted the local storm above them, drawn it into her hand until it was brimming with light and power. "It is the original and natural form of our signature beams. A compact form of the storm's raging power which, with discipline and perfect mastery, knows little opposition."

Unsheathing her katana, the ranton infused hand would stroke over the purple blade of the weapon and pass on the laser-like properties. The katana, a weapon typically known for its cutting power, now gained the burning properties that came with that of storm release. Pressing her fingers against the blade's edge, smoke circled upwards as her flesh burned against the blade.

"This is a simple technique I call 'Celestial Empowerment'. It changes the damaging properties of a weapon into the burning abilities of ranton. It may not seem like much considering it does not alter the damage output itself but it allows a sense of versatility to weapons. As you can see, Storm Release is not confined to a fluent stream of raiton chakra, as is the case in Laser Circus. Why don't you take a kunai or senbon and try it out yourself?"

Nil was only too happy to share some delicious sweet fruits with his cousin. Her words were calm, and to him, wise. She seemed to be doing her best to console him and he was very appreciative. Giving a small nod of appreciation and understanding as Mizuki mentioned their clan having a near universal affiniity for fine chakra manipulation. For a brief moment, Nil blinked, his brain racking itself to try and remember what Bukijutsu WAS through the delicious haze that was the leftover flavor of the fruit they were snacking on. Only for the young Raiu to blush softly and nod when she mentioned weapons and combat stratagems.

Mizuki caring words of condolensces should not have caught Nil by as much surprise as it did, but, he found himself blinking rapidly. His eyes rising to meet Mizuki's in an odd, not entirely decisive mixture of apprehension, hope and appreciation. Her words making the small Raiu's chest swell slightly with pride and.... excitement? Something like that, anyways. His attention sharpening as Mizuki began to explain what she knew, or was willing to tell him, of their clans advanced elemental release. Nil giving a quiet, breathy gasp as she began to churn the very weather around them, biting his thin, pale lip as his eyes rose to the storm clouds above in an almost answering recognition. Her explanation felt familiar, almost, and Nil could not escape a almost tingling, itching feeling beneath his skin as the Ranton chakra in the air almost seemed to sing to him.

Nil's attention was brought back to the present by the distinct rasp of metal and Nil tensed slightly as Mizuki unsheathed her blade, not for fear of her actually hurting him, that noise simply held within it far too many bad memories. Nil's nails dug softly into his palms and, without all that much thought behind the action, took an almost subconscious step backwards. Nil's attention fixed on the blade whether he wanted it to be or not, and as he watched the Ranton chakra spill out over the finely folded steel Nil paused. Mizuki offer for the younger Raiu to try the technique out for himself earning a slightly deeper, more timid flush from the young boy as he looked down and timidly dug his toe against the fine worked stone they stood upon. His hands lacing sheepishly behind his back as he all but hung his head to hide his cherry stained features. His flustered, still slightly reeling, mind like a misfiring engine as it attempted to dredge up some explanation or reason he could give to Mizuki without sounding..... well... without sounding as pathetic as he thought it made him sound.

Nil took a deep breathe, swallow thickly and bringing his arms back around to clutch at the inner seam of his kimono purely out of nervous habit. Raising his head only to turn it to the side, presenting a fantastically blushing, pale cheek to Mizuki while the sun struck the young Raiu's eyes in just such a way to make their almost cracked, thunder-bolt like appearance shimmer like a thousand raindrops sat in the grey areas of his iris. As if they, as part of he, WERE a storm.... as much a part of the storm as the Raiu themselves or their chakra. Nil then took a shaky breathe, before pursing his lips, and shaking his head. "I-I.... I am sorry Mizuki-sama b-but.... I'm not..... I mean I don't... use.... weapons.  I mean I have one....." Nil produced the specially made kunai he had received for his birthday, and suddenly felt even more embarrassed and sheepish about how silly the little ninja tool likely looked in comparison to the elegant, deadly weapon Mizuki handled so well. Hunkering his shoulders down, NIl glanced off to the side before huffing softly, fiddling with the kunai between his small, pale hands before stowing it away back in the folded sleeves of his kimono. He sincerely did not wish to offend Mizuki, but even still, he didn't know how else to make his request.

"Do.... Do you maybe know any defensive techniques? I haven't been a Shinobi long but I've already been in situations where something like that could be really useful." Nil paused before nodding towards another section of the compound, waiting until Mizuki turned to note the section Nil was drawing her attention toward before he spoke. "Over there, in our compound, a detective arrived who said there had been some sort of evil spirit present. That some cultist had infiltrated our house and that he was there to stop them. I invited him in, as he seemed hired by the family, and as we sat down to discuss things over food......" Nil paused before exhaling slowly and closing his eyes, opening them a moment later to look up at Mizuki. "Well.... those cultists made themselves known and I.... I froze. I had never.... REALLY fought anyone before and I was so scared. They were so close a-and they wanted to kill me and.... and..... I panicked. I don't even remember what jutsu I used..." Nil trailed off, letting his small story hang in the air between them before shuffling his feet. Wondering what Mizuki would think of what he had told her.

Though her offer was more one concerning ranton and its control, Nil wasn't interested in weapon arts. The brightness on her katana dimmed in response and eventually disappeared to leave Seiun's purple sheen under the sunlight. She'd sheathe her katana and nod in reply to his question. She had defensive techniques. Not all that many, but sufficient to cover most if not all ranks. And naturally, she had made sure that her Storm Release drew out the most potential of it. Nil would, however, continue to tell a story about how cultists had entered his house with the help of his own naivety. While that on its own was not the worst of troubles to solve, the fact that he had frozen when an enemy made himself known was what actually shamed him. He was a shinobi. As a genin, had he chosen the path of flight to report the situation, he'd be praised way better than when he'd have stood ground. Freezing in front of the enemy, however, was not at order. Not even for a genin who didn't rely on combat prowess but focused more on supportive roles or stealthy approaches.

"Hesitation is the seed of destruction.", her words were calm but she had spoken the sentence with a solemn expression to make him clear there was no room for such behaviour now that he was a genin. Not even a kind personality such as Nil was entitled to this grave mistake. "Even if you dislike fighting, Nil-kun, it is not wrong to defend that or those which you cherish. We are a Hidden Village valuing martial prowess for it is what marks our history. Our clan was born in times of war, founded this Village and fought to preserve Kumogakure as opponents tried to take it down. Even a kind person such as yourself has the potential to protect all you hold dear, for one should not confuse kindness for weakness."

Once again she'd allow the words to sink in before progressing with training. She had been like him in her younger days, holding fast onto the idea everything could be solved with kind words if one tried hard enough. But three wars and a mad god of Raikage later, those thoughts no longer existed. Though Life was to be cherished and peace was paramount, there would be plentiful situations where taking out one rotten piece of fruit was the only way to preserve the fruit basket from completely spoiling.

So once she noticed that he had thought about her words, she would no longer delay the training. She'd form a single Dog hand seal and breathe out the suiton chakra she had molded with it. A layer of raindrops settled around her body in response before maintaining a fluent flow right after.

"I don't use many defensive techniques, but this would be one of them. The Oceanic Current Technique, which knows several gradations in power, creates a layer of suiton that protects you against impact. This C-ranked version should last you against a couple of jutsu of its own rank, just enough to soak the biggest impact on a short notice. However...", she explained at first. When she lingered on the last word, she'd form the Bird hand seal to change the nature of the suiton barrier. "Because it is shaped with chakra of our clan, we are capable of altering its nature. What used to be a suiton technique is, despite appearances, now a ranton natured layer of protection. While I showed you how to do this with the help of the Bird hand seal, eventually you won't be needing that one to alter the barrier's nature. It'll come naturally to you."

Mizuki then forcibly dropped the suiton technique that shielded her against chakra impact, only to replace it with a raiton equivalent technique. Her Polarity Shield Technique functioned the same way as the Oceanic Current, instead fuelled by raiton chakra which created a soft hum. Allowing Nil to observe the technique first, she'd then alter its nature without a hand seal at all, turning the protection's raiton nature into a ranton one.

"The demonstrated techniques should be feasible for a genin so why don't you practise them for a while until you get the hang of it?"
