SEASONS CHANGE ⇒ ??? ⇒ HUSH

Yakekoge Forest, Summer 」
Slinking away from the administration building, the red-eyed shinobi made his descent into a graceful series of leaps atop the Konohagakure rooftops. With only the slightest crack in the navy sky to herald moonlight, the Hidden Leaf was marred by deep trenches of shadow which became of its streets, sun away so long the streetlamps had been snuffed, and darkness ruled the city. Across the sparsely silver canopy, a stroke of black ink worked its trail through the lonely town toward the walls encircling its serenity. Kirei's assignment found him undercover, but not in the bowels of some enemy nation conspiring to topple kings and orchestrate the end of wars. Instead, the Uchiha made his way into the Konoha ANBU corps, assigned to utilize their resources and build for himself a network of contacts large enough that he could keep track of ongoings throughout the Hidden Leaf, on behalf of his superiors. This mission meant that the Jonin was free to operate throughout Konoha with his identity intact, it was no great leap of logic that the son of an ANBU captain would one day join the ranks of Black Ops for themselves, and Kirei had proven throughout his time in Kiri that the Hidden Leaf could use his strength.

This evening, Kirei blazed a path toward the forest, homing in on a nest of spies and information brokers trading laundry lists of dirty secrets beneath the cover of darkness and isolation. Swooping with his eyes across the treetops, Kirei perched for precious few seconds on the wall of his city and pushed off toward the branches and obscured green foliage which in the night's embrace appeared to be a rolling cloud of pitch black mist. Into the roil, Kirei's stride leaping through the brush across outstretched arms of bark skeletons which zig-zagged in rickety bridges barely supported by the featherweight touch of the Uchiha's chakra, which coated his feet as he bound through the river of charcoal. Emerging at times, the twin scarlet orbs which shone from beneath the cat-faced agent's mask, and the cloak which blended into the sable horizon which enclosed around his road to midnight's buried secrets. Gloved fingers gripped at the heft of a branch as Kirei's body fell, swinging with the momentum and soaring toward the ground where he lost no speed and cascaded into a pool which matched the shroud of nothingness, coursing through the blades of grass as a wave of tendrils while his Sharingan sifted through the trove of poorly concealed treasures planted throughout the forest. Spying the formations of chakra welling on the peripherals of his dojutsu's field of view, Kirei's movement dulled to a crawl, creeping through the spaces left open between blades of grass and pooling in the masses of shadowy depths which lurked in every direction.

Congregating at the edge of a stream, the parted trees made for a grand stage of moonlight upon which the spies enacted their treachery. Kirei watched through the veil of his jutsu's concealment, Sharingan inscribing the movements of the men's lips and gleaning what they could from the letters and scrolls exchanged between them, memorizing the symbols, dates, and iconography to be checked later against the database available to him by way of the ANBU's resources. Staking claim to the darkness that was his technique's namesake, Kirei observed, formless eyes flickering through the trees as wind, until the focus of its ire turned to whirling silver stars hurtling through the darkness. Between them, a single bright flash was enough to force the Uchiha's technique to waver, and he danced backward, pivoting on deft feet before the Sharingan found its mark, identifying the darting streak of blue light from which the assault came. At the riverbank, the teen's targets scattered, running the length of the river before some crossed, while others doubled back into the vast forests surrounding them. The Uchiha, grimacing, rolled between another volley of threatening steel and cut the angle between predator and prey with the trunk of a venerable oak. Performing a hand seal with his dominant hand, Kirei would sling a quartet of shuriken strung together with wire into his left. Without pausing for more than half a second, Kirei's chakra had already kneaded itself into the air and begun its work, pulsing from the Uchiha's body and mapping the surrounding forest. Imprints of scrambling retreats, and the outline of his assailant became clear. With no banners, this mercenary shinobi, it stood to reason, had been hired by the troupe to watch over their communion and the rookie ANBU operative had failed to scout the area efficiently enough.

Kirei's assault came in tandem with a flourish of his cape, leaping into a cartwheel while unleashing the projectiles toward the man in black who lurked in his Sharingan's relentless focus. Sparks flew from the edge of a drawn tanto, clanging metallic sounds echoing in the silent woods, causing nocturnal birds to chirp and flutter away, what few there were. Upon one another, the two shinobi came with careful strikes, Kirei striking first with the hand gripping webs of razor wire and darting toward the ground, sliding while drawing forth the edge of Kuon, masked entirely in the midnight gloom. Responding, the Uchiha's target would leap and grasp the hanging branch of trees above them, tugging himself into the bosom of the canopy to stare down directly into the eyes of his ANBU-masked opponent, narrowing his eyes at the Sharingan which returned his gaze. The rush of clanging and cracked wood accompanied the eerily still Fire Country night poorly, cutting abstract worries in the peaceful nation's still.

Another failure. It was the first operation she unofficially took upon herself since having joined the ANBU of the hidden mist village. While she wasn’t in the hidden mist, helping out their allied country while she was there seemed like a very reasonable thing to her. So even if it wasn’t an order from the Hokage to join up with the villages ANBU, she just decided on her own to help out. Mostly because she felt like she wouldn’t be allowed to help. Why would a foreign person be allowed into the secret ops of another village. So instead she took it upon herself to help from the shadows, be a sort of vigilante. And while yes she could’ve passed on the information to the village and they would then act accordingly, that would leave herself without the task. It would leave her without being able to experience the darkness that loomed over the world. An evil that was hidden from the common people and was only shown to those that let themselves be engulfed by it. She wanted that experience, she felt like she needed that experience to grow as a person. To be able to overcome her fears in a time of need.

The trail she had found that was potentially connected to the case she was working had resulted in a dead end.  And so Fuyuko walked back to the village hidden in the leaves through the dense forest that consumed most of the country. She was pondering on what other possible angles she could  go about the case until she heard the sound of metal clashing in the distance. She reached for the top of her head and grabbed onto the fox mask that was resting on top and slowly lowered it until it was covering her face again. With her mask in place she headed over to the noise, perhaps this was when she would try out her gear for the first time, however she wasn’t eager to get into battle. As the sounds of clashing metal grew louder so did a sudden rustle through bushes right in front of her, prompting Fuyuko to lay low in the grass. Hoping that the leaves blocked enough of the light to hide her figure from the moonlight.

She had to make a split second decision, was she going to assault the person that was running towards her or was she going to let them slip by. She had no clue if they were friend or foe, which was precisely why her decision was hard to make. Ultimately she decided to attack the person that was headed for her; it was after all easier to ask for forgiveness than knowing she had let a felon escape. A quick sweep from her leg connected with the shins of the approaching person making them lose their footing and unable to feasibly dodge the next attack. Using the moment of her leg to spin a full circle Fuyuko pushed herself off of the ground when her legs had aligned with the persons flying body. Turning herself into a kind of spear that was trying to inflict a hefty amount of blunt damage as quickly as possible. While they were able to dodge the feet and the force behind it by twisting their body, the move did leave them completely exposed. Having made they only defensive move they could, well besides using their chakra, it was pretty easy pickings for Fuyuko. She grabbed onto his shirt and dragged him along with her own motion. Her feet landing against the tree against which the person she was now holding was initially supposed to be send flying against. Now instead she pulled hard onto them and made them swing against it with the back of their head knocking them unconscious with an easy blow.

Oops” slipped from her mouth as she realized she may have used too much force, because what if they were on her side. “Guess I’ll have to give a proper apology if they are on my side” she thought. Having made a substantial amount of noise there wasn’t much of a reason to keep her location hidden either. With the potential felon in tow as she had grabbed him by the collar she broke free from the tree line and entered the open area around the stream. Not knowing who she was dealing with Fuyuko decided to use the powers of the ANBU mask and changed her voice completely to that more akin of a teenage boy. A voice that wasn’t impossible to imagine with her figure. “Who of you is this guys friend?” she yelled out in the direction of the ongoing fight. She would remain weary regardless of who or how they answered the question, because she was still uncertain who her ally was or if both of them were the enemy. Ready to weave any seals if it was required.

Months of hiding and watching in secret, Kirei had never been ambushed by shinobi guards with a gaze adept enough to see through his illusions. Many nights he had hidden in the spaces between these trees, observing tales of betrayal, woven with deceit. Transcripts, drawings, and notes all returned to the aether on the wings of messenger birds with unknown destinations, and the probing remained undetected. Networks of spies conducted their business across the Konoha border, using the Fire Nation as a bridge to the sea, and distant lands or island hideouts where shinobi would not find them. The vaults, laced with treasures hidden in the secrets these men knew but locked away were what the Uchiha sought, but the sudden flurry of bladework had caught Kirei in a bind. Unable to defend himself and pursue the rapidly fleeing information brokers, the Uchiha chose survival, and darted into the undergrowth, looping the wires in his fingers through the roots of trees and leaving them strung taut to lace the ground in webbing at his foe's feet.

Landing with precision where Kirei would have been, the ronin's expert employment of the spiritual walking practice gave way to finesse and training not typical of hired guards. With his enemy perched on the wires in a shaft of moonlight, Kirei took his moment to attack and launched from the darkness, whipping his hips left to right and lashing out with the heel of his right leg, which broached the guard of his target's forearm, knocking it awry and sending him tumbling. With no choice but to find footing between the wires, the Uchiha's foe found himself on the back foot, relying on improvisation as Kirei sunk the base of his left heel beneath the fractured guard to strike at the exposed sternum, timed accurately enough to send the ninja plummeting to the ground, ankle caught in the ANBU's wire. Grimacing beneath his mask, Kirei crashed down hard, fist connecting with the man's forehead and then, to the teen's surprise, giving way. Sinking into a cloud of smoke, Kirei's head pivoted toward the sound of roaring wind above him, raising Kuon from his hip to provide a makeshift barrier for whatever soared towards him. Bladed tools, some meeting the deft parry of Kirei's tanto, but most digging into the folds of his cloak to dice at the bulwark of his armor, rained down from above him as he darted back, sliced in several places on his shoulders, deep gashes lining the paint of his ANBU mask.

At first, the cat-faced shinobi's heart sank when his chakra detected the presence of a second shinobi moving through the forest, reacting under duress from his primary target, who had managed to evade his detection while his shadow clone fought. Kirei and his opponent collided once more, as the Leaf-nin kept his thoughts divided and clashed in a series of blows from hip to brow, pivoting on the axis of his right foot to circle and strike at the man's back but finding himself repelled and at the receiving end of an onslaught of punches. Surprising Kirei, the quickness causing the Sharingan to react in his place, raising his arms and unfurling between the fingers of his left hand a kunai to deter the assault to his dominant side. Hopping to the rhythm of his spinning tomoe, Kirei bought himself distance enough to swing his right hand down and form a hand seal. Chakra from his feet wove into the earth, kneading it and splintering the soil, raising the stage beneath Kirei's footing into a platform which barreled forward toward the ninja who sought already to close the gap between them. Met by the speed of Kirei's Doton sutra, the mercenary found himself unable to defend against the quickness of the Uchiha's left-leaning leap, lashing out with the edge of his kunai and lodging it beneath the plates of the man's shoulder armor, twisting it horizontal and slicing free the bonds which held up his right-hand side. Leaving behind the wave of earth, which would topple the ninja in a temporary covering of dust and rocks, Kirei would turn to face the new conspirator.

Setting his Sharingan upon the familiar form of an ANBU operative, traditional fox's guise staring back at him, the Uchiha would lower his guard momentarily, roiling earth once carved in the shape of bladed mountains quieted into smooth hills between Kirei and the perceived ally. Masked only somewhat by the ANBU mask's voice suppression mechanism, Kirei made no effort to mimic or disguise his voice in a particular way, merely utilizing its function to neutralize his tone, adding an indifferent, mechanized filter.

"ANBU division one, callsign Songbird! Pursue the runners! Directive is interrogation, do not kill."

The orders came without hesitation, and Kirei turned away as quickly as came his ceremony, cape, and cloak flowing in the wind as earth rose around him in jagged pillars, eyes transfixed on the rising form of a shinobi who peered beyond him to see another masked enforcer. Not suicidal, and with half of the fee already earned by his estimation, the ronin made his exit swift, and Kirei grimaced, a platform of earth rising to carry him into the forest, narrow enough to weave between the trees as his Sharingan tracked the leaps and bounds of the fleeing guardian above him in the canopy. However slim the chance, if their security had been raised because of intelligence leaks from Konoha's ANBU Black Ops, then Kirei had no choice but to prioritize learning precisely who had hired them.

Sweat slowly dripped from the side of her head as she patiently awaited an answer from either of them. The rough terrain slowly changed shape which put her senses on edge but they didn't in particular move towards her so she stood her ground motionless, but still ever prepared if things seemed to go south. Their eyes locked over the distance and clear words were spoken by a voice masked much like her own. She didn't question them, she was after all unfamiliar with how the hidden leaf named their groups after all. She just had to trust that whatever the person was saying was genuine and the truth.

She let go of the person she was carrying in her arm, dropping them to the floor with little regard if that were to injure them more. Because with that person's answer it only made sense that whoever she was carrying around was most likely not a part of his group. Fuyuko turned around and started running down the stream, the most likely location for the others to have run off to. First she weaved the seals necessary to create a shadow clone of herself, they both then weaved a couple of seals quickly to activate the ANBU chakra sensory technique. While it wasn't at its best, because she was not within her home countries borders, it would probably still get the job done. With the jutsu active Fuyuko would keep running and running in the same direction. She was late to the chase so it had no use to run random directions in the woods. The best she could do was cover a 300 meter radius by having herself and the clone running far enough away from each other that they barely caught each other within the technique. This would alert the both of them if the other one encountered something.

And so the pair rushed through the unfamiliar woods of the fire country. Moonlight shining through the leaves and flashing onto the foxes masks as they are hunting for their prey. Step after step, but nothing came within the range of the sensory technique. It mattered not how far she ran but nothing showed up on her senses. She could go on for hours more but doubted she was going to find anything that way. However she was willing to try something else though. The real Fuyuko would come to a halt and seated themselves on the ground before they started to meditate. The clone promptly changed their direction as they could no longer sense Fuyuko within their range, however when they sensed her again they dispelled themselves. Able to tell from her posture that they were meditating and ready to go into Sage mode, so there no longer was a need for them to exist alongside the real one.

Fuyuko felt the chakra she regained from her clone. It put a small smile upon her hidden face that her other self was able to realize what she was up to. After a short bit of meditation her sage mode had activated. Fox ears grew on the top of her head and a foxes tail sprouted from underneath her body armor. Although currently useable, some changes happened to her face as well. Whisker like markings appeared on her cheeks as well as a lochinvar coloured eyeshade. She had decided to walk back this way for two reasons. First of all because she still hasn't caught up with them she assumed she wasn't going to, her speed would be lacking and thus she would never catch up. However there was the slim chance she had ran past them because they used a stronger stealth technique than her sensory technique. So through utilizing the strength of her Sage sensory and her increased sensory range she deemed the probability of finding them high enough to spend the chakra on it.

Without wasting anymore time Fuyuko got back on her feet and started running back in the direction from which she came. While her range wasn't so big as the ANBU sensory range and not being able to utilize it on more than just herself, it still packed a decent punch on the range department. Nothing. Nothing showed up again as she ran through the woods. A bunch of critters but that was about it. She was about to deactivate her sage mode, as she nearly reached the point from which she had departed, but then she noticed a singular signature a couple of meters into the wood line. Perched on a branch overlooking the river bed where she had the short conversation with the other ANBU operative.

With silent footsteps she closed the gap quickly to the target. Bending through her knee, tightening her thigh muscles and leaping fast from the ground up to where the the prey was sitting clueless. Jumping a bit higher than that they were sitting. She weaved the necessary seals for her restriction technique and placed her hand on his back. They made a sound but it wasn't audible, it was cut off before anything substantial was said. The seal paralyzed the entire body and along with it the vocal cords. The push on its back however did man they would fall over and off of the branch they were sitting on. Landing on the ground before with a pretty loud thud. Walking up to them Fuyuko grabbed onto on of their legs, placed her foot on their knee and pulled onto it until she could feel it starting to break. Pushing it just a bit further to make sure it was done properly. Not to the point where it was shattered, splintered or became an open wound fracture, but just enough to make sure they couldn't get away from her anymore.

She left them laying there as she grabbed a pair of study branches and placed them on either side of the broken knee. Wrapping them tight around in it with a piece of cloth, effectively making a makeshift splint. Before the jutsu wore off Fuyuko gave them a hard punch against their temple, knocking them unconscious. She didn't want to hear the screams of agony. Eventually she'd appear from the forest again, again carrying a body with her.

Kirei's feet slipped across the canopy with practiced swiftness, feeling the treetops glide beneath his footsteps effortlessly before he ducked below them, descending through a kaleidoscopic vision of green and orange. Whistling away, the trove of Hi no Kuni's treasured forest melted from his gaze and the Uchiha unfurled a wreath of Kunai from his belt, the quintet making a short stay within his grip before hurtling through the air to catch the knees and shoulders of his prey. Hesitating and bounding to the left, the fleeing mercenary conceded space between them in order to parry the projectiles he could not avoid. As Kirei landed where he stood, Sharingan trailing him through the darkness and recalling the wire-strung knives to his hand before continuing the pursuit. Kirei could feel himself closing in, the man had managed to see through his Shadow Hiding jutsu with the effects of some sensory technique most likely, but could not match the talented ANBU in feats of quickness alone. Kotomo at the ready, the sealed sheath of his blade made its way from hip to shoulder as the Uchiha came upon his foe.

Meeting in the trees, a thunderous crack resounded when metal met petrified wood, Kotomo's container bouncing the blade of the mercenary's defensive effort as Kirei swept low with his body still falling into the earth from their descent. Extending his leg, Kirei caught the nape of his opponent's knee and let him topple, routing the sealed masterpiece in his fingers and sending it into the underside of the man's wrist, where it cracked bone and elicited a grunt from the falling shinobi. Not to be outdone just yet, smoke erupted from the man's other hand, pellets wafting through the air and bursting into a field of gaseous obfuscation. At first, Kirei scoffed as the smoke did nothing to hide his target's chakra from the Sharingan, but that same source flourished for a moment and then expanded, filling the smog and drifting like a wave across Kirei's vision, causing a white confluence of swirling energy. Blinded by the white facade, the Uchiha danced backward, feeling with his echolocation for obstacles and moving his forearm in the path of an oncoming kick before he could see the man retreat again into the trees, taking what he perceived as his best opportunity to escape and seizing it. Reeling and leaping from the haze, guided by his three-dimensional map of the surroundings, which showed him the path of his prey even through his fooled visual prowess. Kirei's grip collided with a tree branch and pulled hard, propelling him high as his off-hand formed a hand seal, igniting chakra in waves which sent cracks through the earth, splintering it and causing a row of mighty trees to groan and bend.

Cut off from his route by the sudden blockade of trees, the mercenary turned to meet a flurry of blows from the cat-faced ANBU, collapsing his guard over a series of strikes around the torso, the Uchiha hit hard with a punch to the right side of his ribs as he danced. One with the shadows, Kirei's assault came with precision, exploiting his weak side, where he could not adequately defend with his broken wrist, and wearing him down, causing him finally to tremble and fall into the undergrowth, pinned beneath a volley of ninja-wire and shuriken, creating a cage of strung-together patterns in the shaft of moonlight between the canopy. Kirei landed with his right hand clenched, shimmering strands of cable elucidating the origin of this inevitable entrapment. Sharingan glimmering beneath the cat's facade, the Uchiha let out a stern voice, imitating somebody much older and fearsome than he, allowing the darkness and mystery of his victory to enhance his persuasion. It was apparent the man in question had been hired by the brokers he sought to survey, but the burning question in the Uchiha's mind was whether he could answer why tonight, after months of undisturbed surveillance, they had become suspicious.

"Why did the men who hired you seek you out?!"

"I'm a ronin, not a missing ninja! I have papers!"

"Who gets you your jobs?! Why were these men referred to you tonight?!"

"They got a tip a rogue ninja has been planting spies in the country, they hired me because I'm from the Grass Country, okay?!"

Without a word, the Uchiha was gone, drifting into the shadow and leaving the threads of his opponent's folly to uproot in his wake and free him, if he were any kind of businessman he would have been paid already. Much more pressing than the matter of bodyguards at work in the Land of Fire was the prospect that a third party had been monitoring the same targets, or worse, monitoring him and covertly trying to undermine his efforts. Kirei's mind filed through possibilities, but the resignation that a thorough investigation was needed clouded the majority of his avenues as he returned, hoping his fellow Leaf Ninja had apprehended his targets so he could question them directly. Even if this meant the end of his surveillance, the Uchiha was determined to uncover whatever was being kept from him in the Fire Nation, resolved to let nothing escape the watchful eyes of his Sharingan. He would descend from the treeline with his cloak wrapped tightly around him, hood obscuring any details of his form or body, save for his height which even then blended into the distant shadows of the forest as he laid eyes on the emerging fox, ANBU mask staring at him as Kirei transfixed his gaze on her own. Only one of the men had been captured, but that was more than enough, and Kirei would signal with his hand to leave the body while focusing his chakra on the person standing before him. Watching the watchers, as the prime directive mandated, caused Kirei to peer beyond the curtain of the woman's mask, attempting to discern the appearance of the mysterious ANBU agent, which he would be able to do immediately if not presented with resistance.

If successful, the Uchiha would withhold his boyish laughs and the urge to greet a woman he recognized from some time ago. The cat-faced ANBU would instead speak with the same hushed, mechanical tone, devoid of any humanity, with which he had addressed her before, seeking to test, as he had with Watsuji, whether Fuyuko had grown as he had. If for any reason he became unable to discern the woman's appearance, he would tilt the head of his mask and remain silent, crouching at the edge of the treeline, and demand his fellow ANBU's identification credentials, one of numerous passphrases and callsigns changed daily. Otherwise, he would proceed with his playful jaunt.

"What is a Kirigakure Shinobi doing so far from home, eheh?"

Under the guidance of the moonlight she walked out and into the open again and at the same time in the distance, across the riverbank a shadowy figure would move about. The terrain didn’t really work in her favour, or rather the position of the moon. The moon was positioned right behind the person. Making the forest cast long shadows over the figure and almost completely obscuring the person in the process. For herself on the other hand there was nothing to hide behind unless she retreated back into the forest, but until then she was just a wide open target. Every move and detail about her laid bare for the other person to see. Despite the obstruction of details from the other person, one thing remained painfully obvious, which almost completely made the obscurity pointless. Those red glowing eyes that were gazing right at her made it quite clear what their position was.

Despite no hostility being shown from the person, Fuyuko couldn’t help but keep her sage mode activated longer. She wasn’t going to let herself get caught with her pants around her ankles as long as those red orbs were staring at her. She would stay on her toes as long as she felt like it was necessary. They weaved their hand around a bit, it was a little hard to figure out what they were trying to communicate towards them. Eventually she figured out they wanted them to come closer and just leave the body where it was now. Not wanting to cause too much trouble Fuyuko simply complied for the time being.

She froze. Stopping mid step as it was interrupted by the question that proposed by the person. She had tried to hide her identity from everyone that she had interacted with that night. Didn’t make any moves, as far as she was aware, that would tell her allegiance. They hadn’t asked a single question that could’ve betrayed it either, yet somehow they seemed to know. How did they know that she wasn’t from the village hidden in the leaves. How did they seem so certain that they were from the mist village? Were they just simply naming a different village from which she could possibly be from, or were they certain about it? Tons of thoughts and scenario’s rushed through Fuyuko’s mind as she quickly tried to figure out what was going on and how best to reply. Eventually she concluded that they most likely weren’t going to tell even if she asked. Furthermore it was most likely best to be upfront about it instead of secretive. She wanted to stay in the country after all to stay with Takao. If she was going to get deported that wasn’t really possible.

An awkward laugh came from behind the mask accompanied with her hand scratching the back of her head. Her voice unfiltered this time. “Aahah… Was it that obvious that I was from another village?”. The tip of her foot gently kicking the ground as she continued her reply. “A vacation I suppose, or is that not allowed? The villages are allied after all.

Her reply wasn’t a lie, it was the truth. However it omitted a couple of details of her stay as well as the reason for why she was right here at this point of the night or why she was wearing her ANBU gear. But what was she going to do now? Was she going to resist and keep her identity hidden or was she going to reveal herself. Both of those option were a bad choice for different reasons. If she revealed herself her identity was known and she could probably be easily spotted again in the future. Which in their line of work, could result in some problems. However, staying hidden could potentially be seen as hostile, but at the same time, understandable perhaps. Fuyuko decided to stay hidden for now and throw out an interesting line.

When welcoming a comrade, aren’t you supposed to introduce yourself? Show hospitality and such?” It was a bold move from her, one that could lead to a confrontation. Despite that she felt like it was the right course for now. Her fingers were ready besides her body, her left hand hovering close to her kunai pouch and her right fingers ready to weave the necessary handseals.

Deep in the woods, night brings with it an ocean of smothering silence, the weight of such pressure pulling down through strings of silver moonlight, stretched tautly and begging to be strummed. Through the forest surrounding the pair of ANBU, such silence became eerie notions of tense breathing, steady heartbeats waging war between them as each shinobi derived what information they could from the other. Countless miles of woodland extended in all directions, leaving them alone save for the tied and unconscious men strewn throughout the surrounding area, and in the distance, not even the chirping of birds or whistling winds interrupted their solace. It would instead be Fuyuko who broke the hush, seemingly chiding herself over the peculiar revelation Kirei had posed as she kicked whimsically at the dirt and stepped slowly toward where he lay nestled in the brush. Smiling beneath his mask, Kirei made the decision to extend his ruse, as he had done with the young Miyamoto, and examine the breadth of Fuyuko's readiness, for the Uchiha, such games were essential to ensuring his friends would grow stronger, and never be in danger. Deep down, Kirei's heart toyed with the notion of his own strength, and the truth that he would perhaps never possess the power needed to save everyone he loved, and so he would continue in the only way he knew how.

"Everything about you is dripping with the Hidden Mist, your posture, your gait, how you wear your mask and armor. In Konohagakure, we are trained for this."

As the woman's stance steeled somewhat, Kirei's eyes would flicker to her arm, twitching fingers drawing a bead on a pouch at her leg, prompting the half-hidden Uchiha to narrow his eyes as she continued to speak. Notions pointing to the alliance between their villages, and the hospitality expected of him would elicit no response, Kirei doing his best to suppress his urge to chuckle boyishly and keep up this stoic facade. The Uchiha knew for sure that there were ANBU in the Hidden Leaf who would recognize such mannerisms, and even though his detection method had been woven with chakra, and relied solely on a serendipitous meeting between old friends, the future may not be so kind. So came his reply, role-playing as the man who he thought could one day stand before his friend and test her might, channeling instincts foreign to him, and fighting against his natural inclination.

"Let's see what they've been teaching you in Kirigakure!"

As their eyes met, the illusion would be set in stone, Sharingan polluting the walls of fact and fiction, blending them together with the Uchiha's chakra, seamlessly overlaying an illusory reality within which Kirei would begin Fuyuko's crucible. From the undergrowth, the Uchiha would ascend into a run, fingers rising heavenward to unleash a quartet of kunai in the kunoichi's direction, two aimed to intercept the movements of her hovering arm and cut off motions made to create a potential attack of her own. Similarly, the other duo would seek her opposite shoulder and forearm, or their trajectories if she attempted to produce a weapon or form hand seals. Meanwhile, the ANBU's right hand would be building a series of hand signs from the moment he burst forth from the forest, culminating in a wave of superheated chakra gathered in the boy's gullet, bubbling inferno of Uchiha heritage, tried and true. Leaping barely a foot off the ground from his forward left leg the moment his projectiles would leave his hand and darting into a strafe around Fuyuko, Kirei would bring the half-Tiger to his lips.

"Katon! Gōkakyū no Jutsu!"

Igniting in a roaring swathe before his mask, the technique would unleash itself mid-strafe, Katon chakra swirling from Kirei's mouth before combusting into the air before him and toward the woman he sought to test. Of course, the brash display was not intended to catch her off guard, and the relative strength of his technique would leave little chance of injury, even if this were a dream within reality's unsuspecting bosom. The hand which toyed before in the myriad ninja tools he had thrown would ready Kuon, the invisible blade chiming with nature's swift release and drinking deeply of the latent power drawn from the Uchiha's fireball. In truth, Kirei relied on such trickery to allow himself to act this way, he would never attempt to injure his friend or have the fortitude to coordinate an assault if not for his favorite Genjutsu Farce, as much as he saw before him a chance to see how much his friend had grown since last they had met, these skirmishes with those he cared for meant an opportunity to hone himself as well.

The notion of the hidden leaf shinobi was perplexing. He was right about the fact that she was part of the hidden mist, but the reasons he gave for that sounded unlikely. The period she spent within the mists’ secret service wasn’t enough for her to pick up any of their habits. There had to be something else at play here, but how was she going to figure out what it was? She didn’t have homefield advantage, if anything the situation was such that she was already a couple of points down. Regardless treading carefully was most likely wisest, who knew what the leaf ninja was plotting.

Due to the unknown direction of the conversation she couldn’t help but prepare herself for a potential battle. With kunai almost in hand she patiently awaited the next move of the hidden leaf shinobi. The line that was spoken my them did not bode them well, and despite her chakra sensory range she couldn’t do anything about the fast flying technique that came her way. There was no physical component, it was completely invisible except for the chakra signature. "Genjutsu?" she thought to herself. She would just have to deal with it for the time being, figure out the abilities of the genjutsu and act accordingly. Until she knew what it did she would just have to perceive every attack as real. There was also the potential of it being something completely different, regardless, caution was the most important thing.

Within an instant the person came in a dash towards them prompting Fuyuko to fully reach for the kunai that she had been hovering. Which in turn made the leaf person throw a set of kunai at her, four in total to be precise. Two of which were aimed at her right side at about shoulder and waist height. Another set of two were aimed for her arm that was hovering over her pouch with all kinds of utility tools. After a quick analyzation of the scenario Fuyuko was able to find a relatively easy escape from the first of probably many hurdles that would be thrown her way. A quick step and a twist of her body Fuyuko easily just turned her body sideways which made all the kunai fly right by her. Her eyes never left the mark though, since losing track of your opponent could mean death in their line of work.

After a leap from the ground the leaf ninja threw a large fireball straight at her. Luckily it was a fire technique, one which she was able to counter easily with the jutsu she had in her own arsenal. Building up chakra within her belly which started to flow upwards towards her mouth as her hand that held the kunai raised to her mouth. When her hand reached position, so did the chakra reach the tip of her lips before being released as a jet of water which collided with the large fireball that was only a couple of meters away from her. The clashing of water and fire creating a thin steamy layer that would clear almost as fast as it came to be.

When her water trumpet technique was done extinguishing the her other hand was already set in motion. Seals were woven single handedly one after the other the seals Bird, Horse, Rat and Snake were made. With her technique ready to go Fuyuko quickly started her own dash towards her opponent. It was perhaps a reckless move, but their opponent had just leaped into the air, there was very little they could do about her advancement while they were stuck in mid-air themselves. She was ready to end this battle in one fell swoop and because of that she decided to disregard her own safety a little bit. If her opponent were to throw any type of non-chakra enhanced projectile she would just have to rely on her innate ability to dodge it. When she would reach within 2 to 3 meters of her opponent she would lower herself to the ground and make the palm of her hand which held the technique touch the ground. The seal would instantly trigger and work its magic upon their opponent binding them in place and leaving them like a fish on dry land.

A breeze whistled in the dim forest, catching the last of autumn's leaves before they found themselves plucked away and swept on a river of wind currents, twirling and dancing through the labyrinth of trees toward a pair of shinobi stood still in the eerie moonlight, bodies rigid as their minds dueled together. Through the illusion of Kirei's Genjutsu Farce, beneath reality a battle waged on where the Uchiha tested one another, Kirei wondered whether his old friend had guessed for herself the fantasy her foe had imposed upon her, or whether her heart raced as if she fought for her life. Kunai screamed through the silent dark, careening toward Fuyuko to pierce her arms and chest, met with the kunoichi's deft spin, avoiding the volley as it vanished into the distant shadows, becoming one with a backdrop of inky night.

The young Leaf Ninja was off like a streak of ebon lightning, making his way toward the woman and strafing to the side while hopping to unleash his fireball, stifling laughter at the absurdity of such a technique seeking to harm a Mist Village ANBU, and one that Kirei respected greatly. Predictably, Suiton chakra surged within the other shinobi, Kirei's Sharingan observing the formation of her chakra as it soared into reality, spiritual energy of water engulfing his Great Fireball in a river of glistening liquid and rending it to nothingness. Left between them, dull, opaque steam made for a picturesque cascade through which the pair could watch one another work, Kirei's left hand already working on stringing together a series of seals with which to mold his chakra while the right produced a lone kunai as Fuyuko's muscles tensed and propelled her forward. The brief excursion from the ground would amount to little more than an extended step, and the force of his Katon expulsion had gained him a modicum of momentum to hasten his descent, as well as place a few more feet of distance between them as he watched her chakra rush toward her palm as it plunged toward the earth, planting itself before Kirei's feet could touch the ground.

As the Fuinjutsu made its mark, Kirei's mastery of earth would be his savior, the Sutra commanding nature to his whim and rising a mound of rock beneath his fall to catch and engulf him, swallowing the ninja's body as the seal's dome imposed itself on the battlefield. Kirei would allow himself to be carried by a tide of Doton chakra, collapsing and sealing over in an instant after it rode to catch him from the air and pluck him like an apple, tearing him away from view before sweeping him further in his strafe. Beneath the earth, Kirei's geomancy would allow him enough space to weave his chakra into a swathe of fire resting in his gut, spiritual energy rising to its apex before he rose to meet the Mist ANBU again. It would be a mere second later that the Uchiha emerged, to the right-hand side of where Fuyuko had been facing, with a stream of chakra already pouring from his skin. In an instant, the surface of earth around the Uchiha would shatter violently, rising in a field of cracking, jagged rocks orbiting around him, while his right hand would gesture theatrically, drawing attention to the shape of a half-bird hand seal at the center of his chest, making sure the scrap storm would not obscure the view.

The next assault would come as a pair of devious misgivings, first attempting to trigger with his hand the Genjutsu he had prepared, threatening to slice Fuyuko's vision into a flickering cascade of confusion while the more obvious threat of his Doton technique would serve to add pressure to an already dire situation. Only a fraction of Kirei's stones would barrel forward, nearly thirty shooting for the Kunoichi's center of mass as Kirei bolted to his right, assuming a counter-clockwise strafe around the opponent while firing another volley of rocks to intercept the movements of hand seals or dodges Fuyuko would attempt. Within the Farce, Kirei felt assured and confident, anxiety melting away beneath the protective whims of his Genjutsu, which allowed him to fight without fear and clear his mind. Already, the Uchiha found himself impressed and would press the attack for only a moment more, elated to have discovered his friend so adequately prepared and ready to defend herself. Kirei's mind, able to focus on the sophisticated methods of fighting and performing Ninjutsu at once, was also his undoing, wandering even in the heat of battle back to the nervous origin of this engagement -

In a real battle, could he perform the same? Would his strength beyond illusion ever make him worthy to protect the Leaf, or perhaps even more importantly, to protect the ones he loved?

Without hesitation or resistance the young kunoichi ran forward to close the gap after their elemental techniques had collided with each other. Fuyuko wasn’t one that wanted to inflict a lot of pain upon whomever she was fighting if she didn’t have to. A fight with no bloodshed was always the best end result in her book and so her techniques were more altered towards that of a crowd control style. So was the technique that she had poured her chakra into that was resting in the palm of her hand. Further the movements of her opponent made it easier for her own technique to hit in general. Someone that was stuck in motion was an easy target to hit if they were unable to alter their momentum in one way or another.

The gap had closed to her desired range and the palm of her hand reached the ground. The formula unwrapped from underneath her hand. Unfortunately just moments after her seal had started to unravel her opponent was able to finish their own string of seals and counter her move. The very earth that they were standing on started to shift to the commands of the person. A small pillar of sand erected from the ground beneath him before it completely encased them. The markings of her seal aren’t necessarily disturbed by the field in the sense that they cease to exist, however they are disturbed in the sense that the seal will end up restricting a weird area. The boy was safe within their ball of earth.

Hidden behind the mask Fuyuko’s face was slightly agitated, she wanted to wrap the whole ordeal up as soon as possible with as little effort as possible. But it would appear that her opponent wasn’t going to let that be the case. It would appear that she would have to fight harder to get her ticket to victory. There was however one consolation price to be taken out of her using her seal. It was the second element that their opponent had revealed and while it was possible for Shinobi of their level to have a third element available to them, it was often one that slacked behind and wasn’t up to par with the rest. The face of agitation disappeared and transformed into one with a smirk on it. She had the elemental advantage within this match. While her water techniques could be countered by their earth techniques, her lightning would remain untouched and always have a neutral or positive advantage.

As the assailant disappeared under the ground Fuyuko just waited to see where they would appear again. They stayed well within her passive sensory range to keep track of where they were headed. She might not know what they were planning on doing next, but following their movement was a piece of cake. He moved fast and to her right hand side, her head already turned in the direction the leaf shinobi was going to appear from. The ball of earth appeared from the ground and busted open, revealing her opponent again. The countless rocks that she assumed would fly away stayed instead near him. “A doton technique next?” she mused to herself.

On top of that they made a rather extravagant attempt to make her look in a certain direction and while her brain had already decided it was wisest not to look, her eyes had already betrayed her. “A half-bird seal, so what?” she questioned. Before realizing that her vision had become jagged as if after a certain timeframe a couple of frames are missing. However it didn’t throw her off or make her nervous. Even if it looked like the situation grew dire, she knew what she had to do. Her hands moved together while she jumped a little bit backwards to give herself a bit more time. A handful of rocks started to fly her direction that were quickly followed by another set of rocks. Her interrupted vision made it hard to count how many were coming her way, but the numbers were irrelevant. With a simple snake seal Fuyuko erected around herself made out of lightning chakra. The rocks that were about to hit her were instead pulverized to dust and fell to the ground right in front of her.

Further she didn’t have to rely on her sight either and so she closed her eyes. As long as she was in her sage mode all she had to do was to make sure their opponent were within the range of her sensory inputs and she would be relatively fine without vision.

Her opponent was better not to underestimate her either despite her closing off her own vision. Lightning chakra started to flow within her left arm as it quickly reached for the pouch again and pulled out a simple coin. The coin resting on top of her thumb which was slight tucked away behind her curled up index finger. Her arm taking aim at the mask of the leaf shinobi where they were. Be that right in front of her or if he was on the move, she would shoot it in such a way that it would collide with their mask if they kept up that particular trajectory. With a simple flick against the coin the technique was launched and the coin was on its path to destroy the façade the person was trying hide behind. “It’s time you showed who you really are.” She said while she send her technique flying.

Flames of chakra choked peace from the Land of Fire, igniting in bright swathes through the pair of shinobi who fought in the dead of night amidst the strange silence. Owing to the magic of Kirei's genjutsu farce, the couple could not disturb a bird within the false reality of the Sharingan's illusion, the desperate battle made crucible of the Uchiha's intent which sought to test Fuyuko's promise, and set Kirei's mind at ease. Fluttering breeze curiously absent, moon not moving through the sky, all these cues would alert a shinobi more perceptive than the kunoichi of their predicament, but consumed in the tide of the ANBU's vicious examination, there was left no time for such inquiry. Adding to the landscape, Kirei's sutra called out for the earth to guide him, enveloping him in its embrace as it swallowed him whole while the Sharingan flickered to the world above, watching the disturbing waves of chakra pulsate as Fuyuko's seal found naught but empty space.

From Gaia's cradle, Kirei peered heavenward and watched his foe, who trailed him effortlessly as he maneuvered beneath her, preparing to strike, alerting him to the woman's sensory prowess. Kirei's return was punctuated by a ripple of Doton chakra exuded from his body, cracking fractals across the ground before the following upheaval, casting a miasma of stones toward the sky where they spun around the young ANBU, commanded by his chakra. Within his field of shattered earth, Kirei's hands came together, flourishing to the sides from beneath his cape which shook theatrically before slamming against one another to form the Bird seal. Catching Fuyuko's eye was easy, and the Uchiha wondered whether whatever sensory method she employed could see through his Genjutsu, did it alter her vision or was it some sort of sixth sense? Without delay, Kirei was on the move again, flitting to the right as he launched a volley of sharp debris toward Fuyuko which would aim to shred her armor and lacerate the skin of her arms and chest. The meager assault encompassed only a fraction of the massive orbiting belt of stone around the young Uchiha, whos hands shot up with kunai in tow to guard his face and chest as he oversaw Fuyuko's response.

Darting backward, the Mist ANBU's eyes would shut, but her movements would continue gracefully, whatever sensory method she employed had granted her sight beyond sight, allowing her to feel the thrum of the world around her the same way Kirei's techniques allowed him to do. With knowledge of her capabilities, Kirei found himself able to ready another barrage of stones toward Fuyuko, and the tide of sharp rocks would rocket toward her in an attempt to bury Fuyuko beneath. In response, Kirei watched the resounding wave of Raiton chakra build within the kunoichi, a nature that he had seen before throughout the Hidden Mist and then saw as it consumed his Doton with vicious heat, tearing the rock apart into dust and vapor. Spinning away from reality, the chakra returned in droves to the earth, merging again where its genesis began and sinking into nothing. That same chakra permeated the woman's tenketsu, racing up Fuyuko's arm as she produced a coin which Kirei studied briefly before the limb took its pointed stance toward him. Smiling beneath his mask, Kirei allowed his chakra to wane, dropping the field of earth like falling petals caught in a springtime breeze.

"It's time you showed who you really are."

Barrelling toward him, the coin took off as magnetic forces pulsed through the ninja's arm, sending it streaming with a bolt of lightning right between the ANBU's eyes. A resounding crash crack would echo through the hush of night, whispers replaced with booming commands as cracks of splintered porcelain spilled from Kirei's face, sending the boy tumbling away as a wreath of blonde hair revealed itself, catching the resonance of Fuyuko's railgun and glowing softly, framing the young face in a halo of light and thunder. Falling slowly below his eyes, the Uchiha's face would partially reveal itself before finally he saw it fit to return them to reality, allowing the truth to slip between his veil of lies. In an instant, the chakra would be gone, Fuyuko would find herself staring at the crouched form of a masked ANBU in the foliage before her, shaken to the waking world as if from a deep, nightmarish slumber. The sound of birds chirping would flood around them, ambient nature's grasp returning to the world as the Uchiha tilted his head at Fuyuko, awaiting any momentary confusion to pass before his left eye closed, winking at her with childlike irreverence.

"It's good to see you again. You're still stronger than me, I mean, not as if that means a lot."

Kirei spoke without his voice masked by the ROOT facade, no mechanical tones disguising his speech, but the air of new maturity leaving enough questions lingering as to not outright reveal himself, but allow Fuyuko to make the connection on her own. Ending with a laugh, the Uchiha would stand and raise his arms to reveal himself unarmed, weaving his fingers together behind his head and dropping his shoulders casually as the nighttime air drew frigid circles around their return to reality.

"What are you doing out here?"

Stones imbued with chakra were hurled, from the belt that hovered around her opponent, at Fuyuko at fast speeds. However the young kunoichi had rapidly defended herself adequately from the potential harm that could be inflicted upon her. The lightning she had casted was hovering around her as a protective barrier and would make quick work of the abundance of rocks that came at her. As soon as those two things collided with each other the lightning quickly evaporated the binds that held the rocks together turning them into nothing more than tiny bits of dust that got blown away by the soft breeze that blew through the woods. She felt secure behind her elemental advantage and was definitely going to press that matter throughout their entire fight, to try and fight as efficient as possible, slowly but surely make them lose more chakra than that they themselves were losing.

However besides that she would also press the matter in the offense. There was only one way she going to find out who her opponent was after all. There were three possible scenarios that could conclude this fight. The first was one where her enemy was victorious, in the second one either of them would flee the battlefield and it would become a stalemate, in the third and final possibility she was victorious. If either of the first two options occurred she was not going to find out the truth of what had transpired right here and now. Only if she managed to get that third option was she going to get the answers she was seeking. For those reasons and with that in mind she had started the beginnings of her strongest offensive technique. It had a potential flaw in the technique as it was pretty blatantly obvious what was going on with her arm stretched out, providing the guidance that the technique required, but that mattered not to her. It was flawed, but she liked it, it had characteristics and that’s what she liked, so she made it and used it.

With the flick of her thumb the coin took the pent up lightning energy that was stored up in her arm and took flight. Much to her surprise the leaf ninja hadn’t moved at all. What was even more shocking was the fact that the rocks that had been circling around them dropped to the ground. Fuyuko couldn’t believe what her sensory input was telling her and despite her vision being blurry before, she couldn’t help but open her eyes anyway. Despite her eyesight confirming what her sage sensory had been telling her, her mind couldn’t put one and two together. Why did they do this? They were in the midst of battle and they just dropped their guard. Watching her railgun tech fly straight for the center of their mask made Fuyuko extremely anxious. What was going to happen, was some sort of swapping technique going to happen? Was she going to shoot herself in the face? Or perhaps was this the effect of the chakra she sensed at the beginning of the fight coming towards her? She didn’t know.

Sweat started to drip down her face as the coin inched ever closer to the mask of her opponent before it would eventually collide with it. Shattering the mask and starting the reveal of the person behind it. A weight fell from her shoulder as she came to realize that nothing was going to happen to her. However it still left the question unanswered, why? Why would one just surrender like that while their lives are at stake. It didn’t make sense to her, in no way, shape or form was her mind going to be able to put the puzzle pieces together and make a story that she could tell herself and believe with confidence. As the pieces of the mask started to fly away, bit by bit more of the was  got revealed. At first a couple of strains, but soon followed by a decent chunk of blonde hair was revealed. An image flashed before her eyes to a distant memory of someone she knew.

However the trail of thought that was trying to put the next puzzle piece in place was quickly interrupted as the sight before her vanished. The location she was in had been changed to just before their battle had started. Fuyuko gulped. “Am I still trapped in a genjutsu? Is this a never ending loop that I’m caught in?” she quickly thought to herself. Her blurred vision had disappeared, but without second guessing herself and wanting to be a hundred percent certain she started to weave the signs snake, monkey, snake, rat and placing her palm of her hand upon herself. If there was anything invasive still left within her it would now have disappeared.

Her eyes fixated again upon the shinobi who was hidden in the brushes. When their eyes met they gave her a wink. Fuyuko grew weary, she had just used her best cleansing technique she knew to get rid of any possible sources of chakra within herself, which left her pretty susceptible to new ones, although she still had access to the academy kai technique. Despite that, her sage sensory revealed to her that there was no such thing going on and that the coast was clear for the time being.

Her eyes sparkled at the sound of hearing the unaltered voice of the person behind the mask. It sounded so familiar and it would match the brief image she saw before in their clash. That voice definitely matched the color hair that was revealed to her. She was also certain that she wasn’t being deceived at least not at this point in time.

Initially there was a sense of relieve within her, however that quickly became overshadowed by another feeling. She wasn’t angry nor did she hate him for what they had done, but she felt like she had to pay them back in some way or another. At the same time, she didn’t want to be too harsh on them seeing as the two of them hadn’t spoken with each other for years. She would keep her emotions suppressed for the time being as she started to walk towards them and put the kunai that was in her hand back into the pouch it came from.

What do you mean? I already told you what I was doing out here no? I’m on vacation.

Fuyuko said with a soft spoken voice with her arms spread out in the gesture of a hug. Should her old friend Kirei accept it, it was time to execute her plan. As they went in for the hug Fuyuko would last minute pull out and instead maneuver herself in such a way that she would headlock kirei with her right arm. She would then bring her fist to the top of her head and grind her knuckles over his head. “Come here you lil’ shit! Why would you do that to your friend, that’s not how you greet one now is it?!” She said through gritted teeth. She’d continue rubbing her knuckles on his head for a bit more before letting him go as her ‘rage’ subsided and her happiness to see an old friend again returned and so she hugged him for real this time. Her chest firmly pressed against his and arms tightly wrapped around squeezing the air out of him a little bit.

I’ve missed you, how have you been? You’ve certainly grown since the last time we met each other.

She asked and said before letting go of the hug. Her hand reaching for her mask as she took it off slowly. Her sage mode came to a stop as well as she did so, her fox ears slowly disappearing within her hair and the marks that were on her face were briefly visible before those too disappeared into the nothingness.

High above the Hi no Kuni landscape, rolling clouds obscured the moon casting deep shades of black and blue across the countryside, making a mockery of argent strands that dipped between them to illuminate clearing, and the river that ran calmly through it. As the last vestiges of moonlight left the water's surface and danced away into the air, a drop of water pounded against the canopy above the Uchiha's head, a light smattering of misty droplets playfully drifting down around them as the Uchiha's smile, hidden by his mask, seemed to penetrate its facade. Behind the crimson eyes and playful cat's face, Kirei's expression shone with all the youthful exuberance that once Fuyuko had known, and he rose from the brush with his stance loosening, a low chuckle escaping from his lips as he watched the kunoichi's face falter and collapse with realization.

"What kinda vacation has you prowling around the countryside at midnight, though?"

As the Uchiha giggled at the absurdity of Fuyuko's initial reply, he responded in kind as she took off toward him. At once, the two approached one another, Kirei opening his arms to embrace his old friend as words left his mouth and his arms snuck out from beneath the ebon cloak encircling his body, matured by long years training as one of the Leaf's hidden blades, and striking out against its enemies. Taller than she could have remembered, and with a grave weight upon his shoulders that he had not possessed those years ago, Kirei's maturity would speak bounds more than tales of their years apart could ever hope to convey. Even his voice, still ringing with the timbre of that boy she had known, carried with it some mysterious undercurrent, like hidden chambers carved beneath miles of stone with secrets that yearned to be free. In truth, Kirei was grateful for any reunion with old friends, the isolation he felt in the Hidden Leaf had become an onerous burden to bear, so his guard faltered as they began to lock arms.

Light patter of autumn rain rippled in serene tempo around them but was suddenly broken by the Uchiha's high pitched squeal as he felt an arm encircle his head and neck, locking his body in place and pulling him close down toward his friend's chest. Like the shriek of a small girl, Kirei cried out bloody murder for a brief moment before he was abruptly silenced, knuckles grinding against his head, pushing away the hood and tussling his golden mane without mercy. Squirming like a captured animal, the Uchiha found himself hopeless pressed against Fuyuko's body and held tight, arms flailing around with his screams muffled by the woman's chest before, after what seemed like hours, he found himself at last released from the torment. With the torture over, Kirei found himself embraced for real, holding Fuyuko as tightly as she did him while relieved she had taken the situation as lightly as he intended, and knew that he had not been trying to harm her. After lingering a second the two parted, and following Fuyuko's lead, the Uchiha reached up to remove his mask, revealing himself deliberately this time, but still showing himself fully only after she had removed her disguise herself. Anchoring Kirei's face, the same red hue of his Sharingan stared toward his friend, though she would surely notice the eyes drifting further toward completion, from two tomoe that had spun quietly during their last meeting, now a triumvirate circled there, and dark rings beneath the boy's eyes spoke to a more severe condition.

"I've missed you too. Life is strange, I hunt, I scout, I scour the mission office every day, and I don't sleep a lot anymore. Not that much different from when I was in Kiri, I suppose. Except what I'm doing now feels less like cold-blooded murder."

With a laugh, Kirei paused at his friend's final remark, looking down at himself, the ANBU armor, matured frame, and hair grown out to obscene lengths that hung neatly in a trail at his back. After he glanced at his own visage, he peered back at Fuyuko, examining her for a moment before reflecting on the truth imparted by her words. The last memories Kirei had of the Mist Ninja she had been taller than him, and walking away from Lightning Country's shore supported by her arms, wounded and exhausted, she had seemed so much stronger and wiser than him, he supposed the former was likely still correct, and truth be told he didn't feel all that wise.

"I guess you're right. I still feel like a little kid compared with all the shinobi I have to work with on assignments, though."

"What about you? Find it hard to believe Kirigakure would let one of their best and brightest wander off on vacation like this. I assumed you were here on a mission."

A small chuckle was released from her body in response to Kirei’s giggle. She’d eventually tell him what she was up to, but keeping this gag going for a bit longer seemed like too much fun for her. “Well you know, the kind of vacation that puts you in a different country and makes you take a stroll in the middle of the night to get the true experience of nature.” She wondered how much longer she could skirt around the true answer to that question, before any hint or resemblance of annoyance would appear on the young boy. However it also served as a distraction as she got closer to initiate her revenge plan on him.

It seemed to have worked since her arm wrapped so easily around his neck before she would grind her knuckles on the top of his skull. Releasing her build up feelings through them back into Kirei followed by her letting go of the head lock and giving the proper hug she had gestured before.

With their masks off they could finally talk again like the friends they once were and still are. As she listened to his reply to her question of how he was her eyes peered into his. “Why?” she asked herself. “Why are his sharingan still active? The ‘battle’ is over right?” her thoughts lingered on that in the back of her mind as she readjusted her main focus to listening what they were saying. Not wanting to seem rude or impolite by not absorbing all the information they were giving.

What do you mean by that? Why would you still feel like a kid? Is it because you feel inexperienced to the others? If so, don’t feel like that. I think you’re more capable than you give yourself credit for.

I wouldn’t say I’m one of the best or brightest. In the eyes of the village and how well I execute my missions I rank pretty low.” She said while scratching the back of her head. “But yeah in all seriousness, I am here on a mission, but not one that was assigned by any of the villages. I’m out here on my own, because of some rumors I caught out on the street. Taking matters into my own hands instead of reporting to the village and waiting on their response. However the intel I had gathered this night let to a dead end.” She said as she let out a drawn out sigh. “I’m going to gather more information later today after I’ve slept a little bit, would you perhaps be interested in joining me?

After having posed her question she would wait to see the young boys reply before prompting another question. “Also do you need help cleaning up here or are you good?” Depending on his answer she would either help him out cleaning up or head back to the village where she would sleep the rest of the night away.

Kirei

B-rank
Met with Fuyuko's indifferent jeering, Kirei's face would scrunch up tightly, arms flailing at his sides while exclaiming the displeasure of being toyed with by his friend. Kirei's response came in the form of yelling impotently while the kunoichi chuckled in his face, finding pleasure in messing with the young Uchiha. Just behind the veil of Fuyuko's eyes, Kirei could see a pang of doubt that still lingered, confusion pointed toward his Sharingan which still glowed softly in the moonlight, trailing crimson light with the movements of his head, and he turned away as she began to spoke. Feigning a glance toward the direction of Konoha as if he had something to analyze, Kirei made a point of avoiding his friend's gaze for the remainder of their meeting, hoping that in time she would forget the dojutsu. Not in the mood to explain his condition, the young Uchiha made his eyes scarce in the only way he knew how.

"It's just..."

"Do you remember what we spoke about in Lightning Country? I still feel that way, ya know? Sometimes I still wonder whether I'm cut out to be a shinobi."

"Thanks, Fuyuko. Gonna take more than one person to believe in me if I'm gonna be Hokage one day! But don't worry, I'll prove myself, I know I can do it somehow!"

As he peered into the distance, Kirei listened to the revelation of Fuyuko's plan, and her intentions in the Land of Fire, nodding along slowly as she spoke. It seemed there was more at hand here than the Uchiha imagined, and if his friend intended to investigate rumors in Konoha and the surrounding provinces. At the sound of an invite, Kirei's head whipped around to face Fuyuko again, and he met her with his eyes closed and a toothy grin, arm shooting up toward her displaying a thumbs up as he spoke energetically.

"Of course I'll come! This is my village after all, isn't it? Let's meet at the South Gate of the village tomorrow night, and you can tell me where we're goin', and what the hell we're chasin'!"

"I'm okay here, just gotta round up the suspects and take them in for questioning. I'll catch you tomorrow!"

With a wave, the two would depart in opposite directions, Fuyuko on course for the Hidden Leaf and Kirei toward the border, further into the dense forest with chakra still streaming from his pores, mapping every inch of the surroundings and feeding the Uchiha with enough information to navigate freely through the trees. Kirei's eyes scanned back and forth as he lept through the silent canopy, light rainfall dancing on the leaves and trickling down to the hood and shoulders of his cloak as he slid the cat's facade mask back across his face. Approaching quickly, the Uchiha located his target effortlessly as the storm began to pick up, and spared a thought for Fuyuko running back to Konoha in the rain as he descended toward the struggling criminal, bound with wire, and drew his attention with a soft landing right in the man's field of view. Kneeling, Kirei's Sharingan met the man's eyes, causing him to stop moving and scowl at his captor, grimacing before growling through gritted teeth.

"Took you long enough!"

"I'm back to free you, so cool it!"

Met with impatience, the man felt his restraints loosen as Kirei spun a kunai in his hand and mounted the bound criminal, slicing through the wire and releasing him. Promptly standing and shuffling away from the ANBU, the Uchiha's target looked suspiciously back at his captor while scrambling to put his back against a tree.

"Go back and say you were broken up by Leaf Village patrols. I'll meet you for intel in the morning, here at dawn."

"Who was that other ANBU? One of yours?"

"Don't worry about her, she doesn't know anything."

"Fine. Not so rough next time, huh?"

"My bad."

Making their way into the forest a short way while speaking, the pair would exchange a nod before deviating to their secret directives. Kirei's night was far from over, and there was still trouble stirring in the wilderness. The ANBU would be suspicious if the Uchiha did not complete his full patrol, and so he made his way to the treetops to traverse Hi no Kuni in the autumn rain, where he felt at home overlooking the Land of Fire and its sea of endless forests. Kirei wondered whether Fuyuko would approve of his foray into the criminal underground, whether she would understand his desire to utilize those who subsisted on injustice to protect the Leaf. On some level, he was sure she would appreciate the unique path of redemption Kirei offered to those who formed his growing network of degenerates and spies. The Uchiha had made progress throughout the Land of Fire thus far, but there remained much work to be done before the Hidden Leaf was safe from the perils of those who wished to do her harm.
