mission:

Surrounding the island was the air of changing seasons. Time marches onward, the struggle to do what work must be done carried on through the island even while the Death Camp would still persist. Commuting every morning became routine as dawn for the young Uchiha, who continued to feel his power grow. It was fortunate he didn't stay, he was able to carry assignments throughout the week to the other participants from the administration building near his dorm. This morning he held in his hands one such missive, a posting bearing his own name and another of the shinobi who called this island home. A woman he'd met on the first day in the Mist, which seemed so long ago now, he was pleased to spend time with her again, to get to know the people here more. Making his approach, the boy's eyes narrowed towards the silhouette of the Osada manor in the distance, and he broke into a run.

'Alright, Kirei. Don't make a sound.'

Cloaked in rain and morning twilight, Kirei slipped between the trees of the island unnoticed, black cloak twisting in time with the shadows as he ran. Several hours still from dawn, the Uchiha moved to the rear of the mansion, leaping from the ground to a lower tree branch where his left foot would launch him heavenward toward the house's roof. Aided by the specialized equipment, the boy's purchase made no sound as his feet touched down on the tiles; without breaking stride, he continued his swift gait, eyes swirling red with Uchiha ruby. Unlike the first times he'd infiltrated the house at night, he knew the rooms by heart now; twisting from his belt a kunai strung with wire, the boy let his dominant foot slide forward on the soaking roof. Speeding toward the edge, Kirei would plant the kunai deep into the wood and leap with the held cable to slow his descent into a second story window he often used to enter.

'Don't leave tracks.'

Dripping wet, the blonde closed the window in his wake and pulled the hood from his head. With a flourish of Katon prowess, the boy would heat the air around him to dry off any water while bending to his knee, using the now dry cloak to quickly clear away evidence of his entry. Sharingan peered down the hall as the Uchiha's silent footsteps soared throughout the house toward the room he sought. No one was ever up this time of night, often he came and went at will through these dark and empty halls. When he came to a stop outside the room of the woman who'd be his companion today, he realized the folly in his plan. In his eagerness, he'd been unable to see that the woman probably wouldn't want to be woken at four in the morning for a mission she didn't even know existed yet. So he stood awkwardly for a moment before kneeling and sliding the sealed black envelope beneath the door. Whenever Nova awoke, she would see the package on her floor, containing the orders from the Village, and the rendezvous where she would meet her partner.

He let out a sigh, turning down another hall and racing for a window to withdraw from the manor. He slipped the frame open and slid his body out, chakra allowing him to retain his footing on the slippery outside wall. In the same motion, the window was closed, and Kirei dropped into the grass, counting off the seconds in his head since his arrival. It wasn't a personal best, but his average time was already a lot lower. Mail delivery itself became a tool for the blonde to train his budding espionage prowess; with a path set before him, the boy honed the arts of infiltration and stealth.

Their mission would be securing Kirigakure borders against threats from the nation of Blood, a minor inconvenience to the vast Mist village but one that needed to be dealt with swiftly. Objectives were twofold, the scout memorized them thoroughly; destroy a bridge facilitating undocumented movement in and out of Water Country, and deal with whatever mercantile forced had been hired to defend the passage of rogues and spies. Through the forest, Kirei stayed in the treetops, blending with the dark canopy still far removed from morning's light. Wasted though the effort may be, as Kirei understood it, Nova was an extremely powerful shinobi, the Uchiha was determined to scout the bridge in advance, play to his strengths, and learn something from the mission whether he ended up necessary or not.

At first, the boy was surprised with the sheer size of the structure they were commissioned to demolish; stretching out over a vast river, roiling tides forming dangerous rapids beneath, was a red bridge at least thirty meters wide. Built with thick, sturdy wood, this would be no easy thing to burn, though Kirei was sure he alone could summon the fire to rend this bridge to ashes, it would take him time and effort he could not have afforded with the men who watched over this illegal road. The boy traversed the river's edge, watching the men smoke and jaw at one another during their lucrative evening shifts. The dossier had said that the pair wouldn't need to arrive until just before dawn and so Kirei made sure to keep watchful eye out for Nova's approach if she came early, but otherwise would expect her in an indicated forest clearing half a mile from the river.

If this when she'd arrive, she would find the Uchiha knelt in the dirt, fingers sliding in patterns over parchment laid across the forest floor as his Sharingan worked to replicate the layout of the bridge. With ease, he would have already drawn them a map with which to work, marking locations of the scouted foes and circling points of attack he thought may hamper the structure's durability. He hoped this planning would allow them enough time to get home so he could request another mission before day's end; so, grinning, he was ready to go.

Nova would awaken early in the morning before the sun would rise to stumble out of her room in the direction of the restrooms. Dressed in her thin nightwear she slid her robe over her shoulders to keep from shivering in the cool air of the mansions empty halls. Her eyes were still fluttering closed slowly from sleep, and after sliding her prosthetic on she rose to her feet to shuffle onward. Between the lack of light in the room and the half-slumber Nova was still in she would not notice the black envelope that lay a foot in front of the door as though it had been slid underneath. Nearly stepping on it she ambled to the bathrooms for her morning routine. After freshening up, combing her hair, and brushing her teeth and now more slightly awake and aware than before. One last yawn and stretch of her shoulders would be drawn out before she started back to her room. Having left the door ajar she rounded the corner before freezing as she noted the envelope on her floor. Her breath would catch for just a moment before she noted that it was the familiar style that the village of Kiri used to send out orders for missions and their details. After the moment of panic would pass it would be replaced with one of confusion. When had it arrives? And whom had delivered it? Picking up the thick envelope Nova walked over to the bed and sat on the edge while unsealing the wax that kept the mission details safe inside.

Sliding the dry parchment from the envelope and unfolding it, she read quickly through the short block of text upon it to see that she was a mission to destroy a bridge that connect Kiri to the land of blood to slow attempts at travel between the two. In the details it was noted that there groups that opposed the destruction of such structures and that should they be encountered that they should be stopped. The border was not too far from where she was now, but Nova decided that she ought to set off immediately to arrive at dawn as the paper indicated. Quickly sliding on a pair of shorts and v-neck tee and a single flat on her bare foot she strode out her bedroom door leaving her bed unmade and pajama's on the wood floor. Walking briskly past the house-servants that were starting the morning routine that they had, Nova stopped at the door where she activated her puppeteer strings before winding them into two different floating orbs the would drift to the puppets that sat just inside the doorway on a pedestal that had been placed there for them. She slid into the cushioned interior of Doku Tsuki and closed the top, setting out on the quick journey that she would have to make.

Nova was startled to see the bridge from well over a mile away, wondering if those who assigned the mission were aware of its sheer size. Though not something unmanageable she was slightly worried about the idea of having to fend of possible attacks at the same time as taking down the bridge. Fortunately she was assigned a partner, and she was glad that it was someone she had actually met before in the village of Kiri on what happened to be Kirei's first day there. There was no use trying to stealth with the metal puppets that she guided, so Kirei would likely hear her approach as she found him at the indicated spot on the mission details as he was already there waiting. Stopping a few meters from him, Doku Tsuki would open to let Nova step out into the morning air and stretch her arms. She was grateful that she did not have the emerald tendrils stuck to her fingers, her most impressive new talent being her puppets which seemed to move of their own accord only by the lack of visual attachment to Nova though they still were completely at her control. Waving and smiling as she approached, she greeted Kirei who was kneeling in the dirt and dragging his fingers in purposeful stroke. Approaching further and looking down, she noted a detailed map drawn into the earth. The map he had made was far more intuitive and easy to read than the vague mission details, Nova was surprised that he had already had several points marked on the makeshift map.

Though she was higher ranked than him, Nova was impressed but not surprised at the uchiha boy's talent with planning and coordination. Seeing as she had not been particularly prepared for a mission such as this she would gladly take the lead, “So what's the plan Kirei?”. As she spoke Nova would walk around and look closer at the map from over Kirei's shoulder and study it, trying to take mental notes that would last.

It didn't take Kirei long to make his plan of attack. He knew the identity of his partner, and because of her reputation and display during camp, he knew enough about her talents to place her where he wanted. For the Uchiha, the morning's mission was an exercise in tactics; Kirei planned to orchestrate this task as efficiently as possible, testing not only his capability for preparation but also for executing on his own ideas. He gave the map a final glance, marking several more times on its surface before his ears picked up the distant rattle of metal against the forest floor. He spun around, eyes looking through the trees at the approaching form of Nova's intimidating puppet. He smirked, happy that his partner brought the big one.

When it finally emerged into the clearing, Kirei got his first chance to observe the behemoth up close. It was a feat of engineering to be sure, impressively crafted chassis which Kirei ran beneath his gloved fingers as Nova stepped delicately from within its belly. Before her eyes, the boy's Sharingan flared to life, analytic prowess carefully taking in first the form of her puppet and then turning to the woman herself. With a smile, Kirei waved; if she were observant, she might have noticed the lone tomoe of Death Camp's opening day now partnered with a second black spot which spun lazily in tune with its partner, signifying his own growing strength.

"Good morning." Kirei wouldn't reply to her question right away, first approaching her in the manner he did all those he considered a friend, with a hug. Not common in the ninja world, Kirei always strived to maintain a friendliness that he had with his friends growing up in Konoha; the spreading of friendship couldn't be a bad thing, could it?

"Well, uh, I guess the plan is pretty simple. There's a whole lot of mercenaries protecting this bridge for criminals, so that's part of it, and then we have to demolish the bridge somehow. I figure since you're a walking armored titan who can not and will not be denied, you'd be able to keep the attacks off me while I destroy the structure. I'm a Fire shinobi, and it looks like I can get that thing's main supports in under ten minutes, it'll take longer than that to burn, but by then it'll spread too fast. Once I have the fire raging, I'll help you clear out anyone who's left and then we can get out. I'll be able to cover us."

In truth, Kirei was proud of his plan, but he would wait for Nova's responses and reply before merely marching off. Assuming she was content with his assessment, Kirei would issue the woman a nod, expression changing to resemble something closer to an actual ninja, though lips still curled in a childish grin. Flourishing his cape, the boy would be gone in a tornado of spinning leaves, darting off into the trees toward their target. Already, his hands rose, weaving the chakra necessary for his upcoming techniques. He felt the Katon surge, burning in the back of his throat as he inhaled and jumped to the top of the gate overlooking the entrance to the bridge.

Exhaling, Kirei's first technique was designed to provide cover for Nova however she chose to enter. Spewing an absurd number of fireballs, Kirei's attack would rain down over the archway, splattering molten chakra across the wood and spreading rapidly. Nearby scouts would look toward Kirei immediately, drawing their attention away from whatever doom awaited them at the hands of Nova's delicate machinations. Without wasting his movement, Kirei jumped to the side, leaping off the bridge and down to the riverbank where he would descend as to have access to supports underneath the structure. Kirei inhaled again, this time activating techniques in tandem; fireball erupting toward a thick pillar in time with the aura of heat around the Uchiha igniting dry leaves beneath his feet.

Kirei set to work, darting beneath the bridge, mind ablaze with vicious, consuming chakra. Bringing his hands together, the boy would will for flames to erupt into being, crashing either side of wooden struts to catch them alight with ease. Above, Nova and those unlucky to be in combat with her would see the rising smoke; thick black plumes came from either side of the bridge, clutching at its sides like threatening fingers which closed into a dark fog hovering overhead. This was the sign of Kirei's fire prowess, that ancient Uchiha spark for which they were known and to which Kirei adhered to diligently. Stopping to focus, Kirei would manifest his will, a twirling sphere of flame surrounding his body and spewing forth fire in all directions, catching both forest floor and wooden bridge alight without discrimination.

Already, the fire would be causing bedlem up above, thick smoke obscuring the view and rising walls of flame beginning to lick at the edges, enclosing and trapping the mercenaries where they were, unable to retreat except further along that which threatened to soon collapse under the might of Uchiha fire. The young blonde hoped Nova wouldn't be alarmed by this audacious inferno running rampant beneath her feet, but he trusted in her skill enough not to hold back. It wouldn't be long before his work was finished and he continued running, emerging at the opposite side of where he had descended and then jumped back to the bridge. Sharingan searched to make sure Nova didn't require assistance before he would leap high above the chaos, chakra swelling in his feet to allow him purchase on the bridge's side and run beneath it, standing upside down while weaving fire with his will alone.

Without the security of land, the thrashing waves beneath the boy would swallow him whole if he did not plan his route carefully. He would work quick, setting his fires more strategically than before as not to accidentally collapse sections of the structure in advance, potentially harming not only himself but his comrade as well.

Nova was surprised as Kirei's first response was greeting her and opening his arms for a hug. Though it was suprising to see that he was so fond of her she returned the gesture with a smile. Noticing him eyeing Doku Tsuki, Nova happened to catch a glance of the second mark rotating around the pupil of the distinct Uchiha eye. Though she was very unfamiliar with the details of both dojutsu itself and the sharingan specifically she was aware that this was a mark of strength and wondered how much the boy had improved since her last encounter with him. As curious as she was however, she deemed it bad manners to inquire further on the matter however set her mind to research it further. Upon her approach he seemed quite interestied in the puppet that she traveled here in, though she knew he had seen it before but only from a distance during the training camp they both attended.

After taking a moment to greet each other, Kirei would start explaining his plan to her, "Well, uh, I guess the plan is pretty simple.

Nova would grin widely as her puppet was refered to as “a walking armored titan who could not and would not be destroyed”, as humble as she normally was she would agree with it after Doku Tsuki's survival of an incredibly powerful katon jutsu recently. Nodding in agreement, she would point to the map, “so those there are the mercenaries?, she would ask not really expecting a reply but thinking aloud. With a curt nod of acknowledgment his expression would change slightly, taking on a determined expression that made it clear he was a shinobi though with his trademark grin. Turning with a flourish he would dart off through the tree's in the direction of the bridge. Gone in a second, Nova limped slowly over to Doku Tsuki and lay flat within it, using the puppets sensory power to keep aware of what was around her. Though her preparations were slower, the puppet jolted into motion moving suprisingly quick for a construct of such weight.

She would arrive into the clearing at the bridge's edge in time to see Kirei leap an impressive distance to into the air to land gracefully on the archway over it. Leaning forward slightly he would begin spewing a number of fireballs forward arching above the earth before falling and splattering flames against the wood. Using that as her signal the puppet would bury itself under the earth and leaving Nova in what from the interior looked like a coffin. She let her attention shift from what was in front of her to what was around her, feeling the slap of the many mercenaries feet against the earth and the bridge as they jumped to respond to the rain of fireballs. There was a pair of scouts standing off to the side who's attention was caught at with the boy's impressive jump, being the first ones to see him also marked that they would be the first to be in the way of Doku Tsuki.

Tunneling directly underneath them the puppet would veer upwards. Still buried beneath the earth she would strike, the scouts unaware of their soon to be fate as they looked at the fire-flinging boy on the archway. Doku Tsuki's right pincer would burst from the earth inches from the second scouts leg and clamp down with a resounding snap on his shin. His partner would turn as he would scream from pain, looking down at the ground in terror for a moment before Doku Tsuki's tail would stab up from the ground behind him and pierce through his neck. Blood would gurgle from the wound for a second before he would fall forward into the dirt, the crimson pooling around him and soaking into the earth. Convulsing in pain and screaming as he saw his counterpart slain, the scout with is leg between the metal pincers would stop struggling as Nova would yank the man downwards burying to him in the dirt to his torso.

Two down. Feeling the earth around her she noted there were a total of six more mercenaries all paired off as they headed in Kirei's direction. The quick dispatching of the first scouts seemed to have gone relatively unnoticed with the fiery chaos that had begun on the bridge, giving Nova the potential for a second attack with the advantage of suprise. One of the pairs was approaching from halfway across the bridge, the obstruction of the fire slowing their advance and allowing Nova to focus on the other two first. On this side of the bridge but the other side of the path the closest two would approach, appearing to begin the a series of hand symbols to form a jutsu. With Kirei's back turned, she wanted to stop so he would not have to. A stream of water would burst forth from their hands as Kirei leaped off to the side and down to the riverbank leaving Nova to deal with the mercenaries. Water from any source would be a threat to their mission, and without a second thought Nova would fire the first projectile from the tail as she sunk back under the earth. A metal cylinder with a drill on the front would tunnel through the ground at a great speed, its small size making it nearly imperceptible unless you were expecting an attack from under the earth. Standing still as they channeled the suiton jutsu, they had no time to react as the earth beneath their feel exploded. Chunks of earth propelled outward with bits of flesh as fire singed everything in its vicinity. The jet of water would cease as would their movement, though the explosion caused quite the draw of attention.

Attention shifting away from the now deceased mercenaries, Nova noted that the duo that had previously been traversing the bridge as it started to burn were no longer there and she extended her senses to try to locate them. Below on the river's surface it was a blurry image but she could feel them darting across the waters surface towards her mission partner. Doku Tsuki emerged from the earth surface with a scattering of earth and grass to head in Kirei's direction before she was taken by suprise by the final pair that she had lost track of. Unable to follow Kirei under the bridge, her attention would turn to the two that had decided to attack her directly. A smirk would cross her face as she saw one of them clench their fist and pull it backwards to charge it with jutsu before slamming their fist downwards. The metal would clang loudly and echo from within for a moment, before the attacker would howl out in pain as he pulled his hand back dripping with blood. The location he hit was not even marked with a dent, though the spines on the puppets shell did their job and sliced into his knuckles as well as possibly shattering them.

From her other side his partner would slice downwards with an evil looking blade, though Nova's smirk would only grow wider as she would react with lightning speed and slide it in half with the razor edge of the puppet's bladed tail. The movement still drove him forward, the lack of impact sending him stumbling to which the tail would stab downwards into the vital veins on his neck as she had with the scout before. Leaving him to fall limp her attention fell to the man who had finally silenced his pained howling in favor of sprinting away from the horror that had befallen his companion. On to the burning bridge he would dash, perhaps opting for death from flames rather than one from the scorpion construct. As she moved forward she would stretch out her sensed to note that the bridge was quickly loosing stability and that Kirei was sprinting along its underside with the two mercenaries who had gone down to follow him not far behind. A moment of hesistation struck Nova as she worried about the puppet causing a quicker than intended collapse, but with the thought of Kirei in danger the leaden puppet would dart forward onto the wooden beams that made up the structure.

Doku Tsuki's metal legs would sink slightly into the wood, the structure intended for pedestrians and the occasional cart and horse that the puppet easily outweighed. Pain distracting the fleeing man, Nova would shift the slot for ammo to the next, preparing the harpoon arrow as the puppet sprinted along the bridge. Firing with lightning speed and precise aim, the barbed metal bar would sink into the flesh under the mans ribcage stopping him in his tracks as the metal wire ran out of line. Within the ammo compartment a pully would spin pulling him backwards to her while his screams rang out. The metal wire winding back up withing the casing the puppet would fall upon its prey tearing into it with pincers ready and yanking the harpoon back out from the corpse though it was now painted crimson. Just now she would notice the flames licking up on either side of the bridge, a creaking squeal coming from the wood as it began to give way in parts. Down below, Nova worried that the pair would be gaining on her partner, and Doku Tsuki with its barbed legs skittered over the edge to hang upside-down from the burning bridge, ready to help Kirei in any way that she could.

The young Uchiha remained impressed, though not surprised, by Nova's ruthless opener. Quick enough to strike even as his own diversion went toward the waiting scouts, Kirei watched the woman in his peripherals first dive beneath the earth's crust and then, in a sinister motion, arise and plunge her puppet's weapons into the fragile bodies of her targets. Months ago, the boy would have winced and found himself haunted by signs in his dreams that this life of slaughter was not for him. Now, after his long time in the Mist, Kirei was coming to accept those lost words his father had told him when he was young; in the life of a shinobi, there are times where you must kill, or else you will be killed. Such a harsh reality left Kirei sighing inwardly, begging the cosmos for another way but simultaneously accepting what must be done. There was no use putting his foot down and refusing to kill, he'd long-passed that, and besides he would be just as responsible for the lives lost by his comrades; such was the shared tragedy of every ninja.

As Nova prepared to engage more of the men who turned to the pair, Kirei made his planned descent. Above him, over the roar of the inferno he lit beneath, he could hear the metal chittering of Doku Tsuki's feet clamoring about and the sound of weapons impacting its sturdy chassis. Without being able to see his ally, Kirei was left to wonder how she was faring against a large group; the sounds of screams, barely muffled by the blaze, made the Uchiha think she would be just fine. His work was quick, quickly he would be able to set fire to the supports beneath the bridge, thick pillars of wood stained with red paint peeled black by Kirei's chakra. Ripe and hot, the boy's work could be seen from the village walls, guarding Tokujo remarking on the mission's success, bearing witness to the daily demolition of such passages to the Land of Blood. Between the pair, they shared a chuckle, referring in secret to the Genin and Chunin who left for the mission earlier, they'd seen the small boy and then later, the intimidating puppet. The wager was simple; they'd watch until the pair returned and if the blonde boy were unconscious or dead, as one of them thought he would be, he would be the proud owner of one-thousand Ryo. He looked weak enough, and if either had actually known Kirei, it was probably a safe bet.

He crested the flames and spun high at the apex of his jump, spreading the blaze in the wake of his movements. Swathes of flame would erupt where he stepped, deft footfalls and swaying hands conjuring the smooth strokes of flame. The Sharingan had the power to make a shinobi into a brilliant artist, analytic prowess readily capable of producing complex images on paper as demonstrated by the boy's detailed map earlier. Here on the bridge, that power was put to use weaving an intricate tapestry of flame which spread throughout the structure, even below where he could not see, he watched the chakra with those eyes and burned the struts beneath. He could watch, then, while topside, Nova's rampage through the mercenaries; her mighty construct easily toppled each oppressor who stood in her way without so much as a scratch. The boy could not dally, and swept away a wreath of burning fire to obscure his jump below again.

Setting the distant blazes to the opposite side of the bridge would prove to be the most delicate part of his work, timing them just right to preserve the integrity of the bridge while he made his way back was essential. As he set to the task, he heard the heavy landing of two pursuers; the boy's eyes quickly locked onto their chakra, more than capable of following both as one prepared his energy for a jutsu while the second came at the boy, arcing left to take attention from his friend. With his left hand, the Uchiha began forming hand seals while his feet steady. Beneath the feet of the approaching attacker, the ground would splinter at sharp angles, rushing up to impede his path, several ledges forming at the height of his shins to trip him and then falling away as he scrambled to stand. Without delay, the ground would open wide and drop him to the bottom of a chasm, rendering him unconscious. With his chakra ready, the second assailant let loose a torrent of water from his mouth, which rose high before splitting into a host of projectiles in the shape of needles.

Grunting, Kirei rolled and left his feet as the first rain of liquid nails came down for his position. He watched, Sharingan carefully analyzing the man before him; the technique could be held and fired at will, only a portion of the needles were gone after the first assault. Completing his own preparations, Kirei inhaled sharply then spit forth a cone of mud, Doton liquid spinning up into a copy of the man's water needles, each of the earth nails hardening into sharp points as the chakra did its work. Taken back by the doppelganger, the man was not prepared for Kirei's swift attack; he ran forward, launching the entire of his Jutsu's payload in a circle for the man's front while his hands came together with another technique. Again from his mouth came chakra, but this time burned hot, flaming balls would engulf needles, working in tandem with his opponent's twisted technique to obscure and enhance the assault.

Countering a brunt of needles with what remained of his own, the man was left with little recourse, unable to form chakra necessary for a defensive jutsu, he let out a cry as his body stung from fire and earth. Set ablaze, the screaming mercenary stumbled back toward the river, toppling into the rapids in a desperate bid to quench the flame and let out another cry as the river churned above him, dragging him away. Kirei turned to see Doku Tsuki, whose bloody frame dropped beneath the bridge ready to assist. The Uchiha turned to Nova, nodding firmly to let her know he was okay, and then jumping back to the top of the bridge, which by now was noticeably engulfed in the inferno. Now positioned on the opposite side from home, the pair would see the oncoming reinforcements, investigating the plumes of smoke rising from their work.

"Alright, this thing's going down soon!" Kirei would yell to his companion "Let's get out of here! Follow me!"

Bringing his palms together, Kirei would spread his chakra into the dirt and then surge it, pushing dust upward in a violent flurry. The Hidden Dust technique, his own adaption of the Mist's signature Jutsu, would provide cover for their escape and as soon as he laid the cloud between them and the distant threat, he turned on his heel to retreat. Dodging cracking wood, Kirei would reach beneath his cloak, withdrawing handfuls of projectiles with brightly colored pictures painted with tags attached at the base. Extremely easy to notice, Kirei would use these Kunai and shuriken to mark spots on the bridge where he thought it could not take the puppet's weight, Sharingan analyzing the structure to determine a safe path for Nova to traverse as they would leave the collapsing monument.

Nova was impressed with Kirei's quick rebuttal of the mercenaries jutsu, not surprised that he would be able to deal with them himself though it was always better to be available in case she was needed. As she began to approach  him he would shout as he saw her, "Alright, this thing's going down soon! Let's get out of here! Follow me!" Simultaneously the bridge would creak precariously and the wooden beam being held by the puppets back legs would start to collapse. Kirei would dart ahead, Nova who would normally be faster in the scorpion puppet, was traveling much slower than she would normally for fear that with the wrong maneuvering she would be sent sinking into the raging river below. Kirei seemed to be aware of the danger Nova was in, and began flinging weapons at the spots that he was able to deem more structurally sound as the rest burned around them. Clinging to the bottom side of the bridge they would tear away from the reinforcements that would  without question be heading in their direction. Though the loss of the bridge would delay them greatly, the dedication the mercenaries sometimes had was great enough to push them faster. Despite a few near-death experiences, with Kirei's adept skills leading her through what felt like a burning obstacle course they would make it to the other side with moments to spare. Though she did not turn back she could feel the wood crumbling into the rushing water, the flaming beams sending up billowing smoke as the river extinguished the flames. Across the bridge there was the barely perceptible view of the what could be assumed as reinforcements.

“Nice work on the bridge, though I don't wanna stick around to see how they get around that. Here, sit next to me.” Nova would open the shell to Doku Tsuki and pat the cushion next to her as she sat up, “just enough room to sit with your legs crossed, its a little tight but we well be back in Kiri to report out mission in no time”. Should he accept the offer of transportation, they would set off leaving the remains of the charred bridge still in embers.

Far from the action, the pair of shinobi who played games with the lives of their fellows watched with wild anticipation. Each jawed at the other, speculating what was going on at the source of the immense flames and smoke in the distance. Clearly visible from beyond the forest, twin pillars of ash rose high into the skies above clutching between them what remained of blue to snuff it from visibility. Resolute that the slight blonde boy would return at the very least unconscious or severely wounded; the first of the Special Jonin gave a laugh when he heard the first crack echo through the landscape, loud enough to reach the wall.

"I'll double down; I bet you the little guy doesn't even come back at all." His statement was met with a shrug from the other man, who then nodded.

"Why not? He's probably some prodigy anyway if the village lets him go on missions like these."

Far away, sounds that could not be heard, even up close, were lost in the roaring flames. The Uchiha jumped, twisting his body over the splintered remains of wood and fire which erupted from the collapsing bridge. He landed running backward, peering through the dusty fog at their pursuers who just now broached its obfuscation. He hooked between his fingers handfuls of projectiles; shuriken welded from black metal roaring in graceful arcs toward the oncoming mercenaries. Careening through the air, Kirei's missiles met their marks with ease, his Sharingan making quick work of the men by slicing their legs and arms with his attack. Still hopping away from the worst of the reinforcements, Kirei would twist on his left foot and leap away again to the far side of the bridge and scan around.

Jumping from above came the first few men who caught up with Kirei, much slower than Nova's puppet and having to pay extra attention to mark her path meant that for now he was alone. The first came down with his fist, aiming for the boy's neck and shoulder, but was met with air as Kirei darted back. Lower on chakra than before, Kirei called upon the aura of flame, encircling himself with the comfort of his own chakra in a dome facing the two men. Obscured from view, he formed seals with his right hand while the left hoisted a kunai into his slender digits. To the boy's left, a copy would burst from a plume of burning chakra, mimicking the boy's stance perfectly. Darting from either side of his barrier, the twin Kirei's would come at each of the men at once.

To the left was the genuine Uchiha who would come low and launch a kick upward, surging fire over his foot and willing it to appear either side of the man and enclose at the same time. Connecting hard, Kirei's foot dug in, and the fire rushed onto the man's body as he fell backward. The boy stood, following through with his strike and sending a punch forth to meet the man's lower ribs, intending to wind him. Landing again, another surge of fire would follow, rushing from behind the Uchiha to push the man from his feet, over the edge of the bridge and into the water below. On the right, the clone jumped, tossing a handful of kunai at its prey who would roll and rise with a quick kick for the clone's landing. Imbued with Kirei's instincts, the fire clone ducked and pushed forward, lifting with a punch for the jaw that would require it to leave its feet. Mightily, the clone's blow connected and it followed up without delay, unleashing a flurry of strikes for the man mid-air before peppering the mercenary with shurikens and landing.

The twins exchanged a nod, and each set off toward the shore, following the path Nova had taken, which was now barely able to support even Kirei's small frame. The clone would serve as the sacrifice, leaping into the air to give Kirei leverage to jump even higher and finally reach safety on the riverbanks near to Nova's puppet. With a smile, the fire clone fell away into the collapsing inferno and vanished in a puff of smoke. The young blonde turned to his partner and smiled, watching her emerge from the interior and offer him passage with her back to the village. He nodded quickly and tucked himself away in the structure, enjoying his first experience inside a puppet; entirely new for the boy who'd barely even seen a puppet before meeting Nova. The ride to the city would be mostly silent, Kirei's chakra reserves low from expending so much fire in his efforts. He reveled in the opportunity to remain still and enjoy the ride.

Atop the walls, the wagering duo watched Nova dart from the treeline, puppet unaccompanied by any partner but scorched black and stained with blood. On the left, one let out a cry of victory, and the other simultaneously sighed and shook his head, disappointed at the lone arrival. Within seconds of breaching the city walls, roles would be reversed as Kirei hopped out of Nova's puppet, stretching out on the pavement and eliciting a defeated yell from up above. Between the pair, faith had prevailed and Kirei returned home, debts were paid and the two would go on to the next fancy. For Kirei, the day would be forgotten just as quickly.

After saying his goodbyes and parting ways with Nova, Kirei set off to the administration building for another assignment. Missions blurred into one another, each task another stepping stone on his path to perfecting the skills he needed for his impending homecoming. The boy's eyes had already evolved, he'd developed powerful techniques that would grow with him, and already he practiced perfecting the abilities of his Sharingan more than most Uchiha ever did. He took a dossier from the wall, opening it and taking a patrol route before immediately departing on his new charge. There was no rest for Kirei while he was on this quest, he would accept nothing less than success when he finally returned.
