Why in the hell was he here again?

The Chuunin Exams. An event celebrated throughout several years that every up and coming Genin looks forward to. This was their chance. They have the ability to represent their village in a tournament against other shinobi of their rank and come out on top, declaring their village above everyone else. Not only did it offer a chance for the low ranking ninja to prove themselves, the exams also acted as a source of entertainment for everyone around. After all, who didn't want to come watch two kids duke it out? The village that hosted it got a large influx of activity as well, having the chance to make it boost their economy significantly. However, there were some Genin around that didn't register for the exams, who also wasn't interested in them at all. Not only were they too weak to have a chance at winning, they were too weak to even give a damn about them.

One man that would fit perfectly into this category of Genin would be Ryo. Some people saw him as nothing but a sloth who preferred to laze around over actually working to become stronger. He accepted this title, even though it wasn't really true. He wasn't lazy, he just preferred doing the minimum more than anything. If there was anyone who shouldn't be interested in the exams, it was him. Not only was he not interested in becoming stronger, he wasn't even interested in ranking up. Life as a Genin was fine to him, and he intended to ride the ride until it kicked him off. Despite all of this being in play, Ryo was indeed at the exams.

It was just past noon and Ryo was currently waiting in the queue of people entering the village, each having to show identification to gain passage. The look on his face was simple, he didn't want to be here. The only reason he was, was that he didn't really have any other option. After learning that he didn't register for the actual exams, his foster parents practically kicked him out and told him to go to Kumogakure no Sato anyway, as if it would provide a different outcome. Even with his countless protests, they didn't change their mind.

There was some light in his darkness, however. On his walk to the train station, he encountered Kejido. He was nothing but an acquaintance of Ryo's, with them only meeting each other at the brief squad meeting only a few days ago. Technically, they were squadmates, but the mates part wasn't really true. Ryo only knew that Kejido was an attractive, sharp-dressed military man and Kejido... didn't really know anything about Ryo besides the fact that he was pretty lame. At least that's what Ryo thinks he thinks, who knows? Kejido happened to be going the same place, so they quickly became travel buddies, except they weren't really buddies yet. After a brief train ride that was filled with minimal conversation, partially having to do with Ryo's nervousness, they arrived at their destination.

Kumogakure no Sato. The village that one of Ryo's newest encounters, Mizuki, was from. The stronghold that was made on the tips of mountains impressed Ryo, along with the surrounding view of distant places obscured by fog. It didn't entrance him like other specific things did, but he did acknowledge that it was pretty beautiful. After a short walk from the station, they arrived at the gates of the village. What greeted them there was nothing more than a long queue of people, lined up to enter the village, and that's where they were now. Even though everyone needed to provide papers for entry, the line seemed to be going pretty fast. Still, waiting in line was still tedious, but hopefully, it will be somewhat entertaining with Kejido by his side.

Kejido had not entered the exams for one reason. He didn't want to reveal his hand just yet. That wasn't to imply he wasn't curious about the other competitors. While not directly engaging them left him without a true feel for it he liked surveillance work against potential future threats. This was simply a way for him to observe and take notes on everyone supposedly around the same level as him that felt themselves to be a possible top dog as it were. Allowing him to observe their talents and assess them in his own way. He doubted if he would ever fight the majority of them. However when being handed a free pass to observe other shinobi from around the world he found it irresponsible to pass it up. So he had made a request within his clan for permission to travel. It had taken a couple of days but they had assessed the threat to be minimal. After all the security for the exams was going to be impressive. They didn't want any of the shinobi they were allowing in to actually threaten the place after all. Still with his permission to go he was repeatedly warned to behave himself. After all he was representing the clan in this matter even if he was going to watch. They also knew his intentions. So while they were letting him go they wanted a detailed report upon his return. Which was scheduled to happen as soon as the celebrations for the chunnin exam finals were over.

However for his trip He had chosen to wear his specialist uniform. It only had the one white stripe over his left breast but it was enough to indicate his rank. His uniform was pressed firmly with clean creases. Black in color with red shoulder pads and red stripes around his neck and wrists. A row of four copper buttons on each side of his shirt all buttoned up. His slacks were held up by a white belt with a copper seal with his clans symbol on it. Polished black boots and white gloves finished off the look. For some odd reason though he had a kunai in a white sheath on his left hip as if there for decorative purposes. Only the hilt sticking out. Of course he had three senbon up each sleeve but those were hidden. His headband was stitched into his left shoulder carefully marking him as an Iwa nin. In his uniform and with his posture he appeared to be very regal. Straight backed with a solid stride. Still it was peaceful enough that he was only keeping the weapons on him as a trained habit of remaining prepared for any situation. While they would check him for hidden weapons he would make it known that unless the law required it he wouldn't be disarming in another country for any reason. They would need to respect his need to protect himself as well. He doubted they wanted an incident but it was all basic academy weapons anyway.

Still having to wait at the train station to board the train was a pain with an entire rolling suitcase nearly the size of himself with him. Still he had grown stronger as of late. His wide shoulders bolstering more strength that one might assume. However he was pleasantly surprised to see one of his squad members Ryo there. He still chuckled at the name. Still as lazy as the boy was he had such potential. He just needed to discover it in due time. He would be most valuable on the team. Still it would be nice to bond with him. They met up and decided to share a car which was actually rather quiet. Ryu had shared that the orphanage was making him go while Kejido had revealed he had asked to go specifically to watch the matches. After all they were usually intense and there was an awful lot to learn. Ryo didn't seem interested as per usual so most of the train ride was spent eating complimentary tiny sandwiches with a couple of cups of tea. Kejido had them wait until most of the train was unloaded before they left as he didn't like being crowded in thin hallways. As such their arrival to get in line for the gates was rather far back. At least they were fed and hydrated. Still the line was slow moving. Kejido would use his large suitcase as a seat as they went. Allowing hi to sit and rest for a few minutes at a time.

Still his silver eyes would admire the structures around them. Even with the ever present clouds of Kumo the majority of it was built out of the mountainside. So many similarities and yet the weather was almost entirely different. Here it was cold and a little wet here and there while in Iwa the sun usually dominated the village and while the could mountains were exactly that, the sun was usually making the air uncomfortably warm in the spring. The summers might as well have been Suna. Still unlike suna their mountain got plenty of seasonal rain to sustain itself. All the same Kejido had taken out his notepad and was scribbling in a drawing of the main gate. Just something to pass the time. His art surprisingly detailed. Still the line was slow moving so he supposed he should at least be a useful conversant with his travel partner. A little bit of candor might do the two of them some good. Bonding between soldiers and all. He didn't expect anything on a band of brothers level but all the same. Perhaps the young man could use something to distract him as well. Kejido would glance up at him before smiling and tilting his head. His voice kept quiet so as not to be heard by the guards but easily a voice at conversation level. Best to start with a sense of humor.

"I say, this does remind me a little of home. If not a little soggier. Our women are prettier too don't you think Mr. Fujita?"

Ryo still wondered why he was attending the exams again, or more what he could do to make them somewhat entertaining for him. He wasn't interested in the fights or the trials, the same that he wasn't interested in any of his shinobi duties. Maybe he'll stay away from the busy areas and just sit it out until the celebrations start, he didn't really know. Despite his situation, there was one thing that already made his trip to Kumogakure no Sato worthwhile, and that was the fact that his squadmate Kejido was next to him in the queue to get in. Now that he thought back to it, their train ride together was slightly eventful. They both shared the reasons they were going to the exams with Ryo confessing that his foster parents forced him and Kejido requested permission to go. It was clear they both had different attitudes towards the event, but they were stuck as partners nonetheless.

Kejido came dressed in his usual uniform, which he always seemed to wear. Maybe the reason for that was because it was a uniform, Ryo didn't really know. All Ryo knew about him, or at least what he could gather from his appearance, was that he had something to do with the military. Ryo also didn't really put much effort into figuring out what exactly made Kejido special either, he just seemed to enjoy the fact that he had a man in uniform as an acquaintance. Ryo, on the other hand, wasn't dressed in a uniform. He came dressed in his standard white button-up and black slacks, not even putting in the effort to dress to impress. He was a shinobi from Iwagakure visiting a foreign village, and yet he looked like a civilian. He did, however, have his headband on his person, stuffed inside of a poach on the back of his belt along with his other ninja tools. He didn't really enjoy wearing his headband but did feel the need to carry it around in case he needed to flash his badge at someone. As for luggage, Kejido seemed to bring a large suitcase, which Ryo could really compare his simple duffel bag to. As long as he had some spare clothes and some books, he couldn't really care less.

As they stood in line behind several other travelers, a conversation wasn't very apparent. People talked to each other around them, and the screams and laughter of joy echoed from inside the city, but they stood silent. Ryo wasn't one to initiate a conversation, especially with someone like Kejido. Eventually, Kejido decided to utilize his wheelable suitcase as a chair, something the Ryo was immediately jealous of. Kejido eventually whipped out a sketchpad to pass the time and started drawing. Ryo, not being very sociable, snuck in the occasional peek of what exactly the man was drawing. From what he could see, it seemed to be the gate in which they were approaching, and was surprisingly well done. It was still a work in progress but didn't seem to be the work of an amateur. Ryo was glad that he figured out that Kejido could draw, practically swallowing all of the information he could gain on him.

Eventually, as if he noticed the awkward lack of conversation as well, Kejido started talking to Ryo. What he said was simple and short, seemingly acting as an icebreaker. He compared Kumogakure to their village, and also added in a comment of their women. This made Ryo a bit uncomfortable. He didn't really notice anyone in the village, not willing to put in the effort to socialize with people and make friends. However, he did seem to notice guys more than girls. Maybe this had something to do with traumatization that Aikiko caused him in the academy, he wasn't really sure. Whatever it was, he couldn't really offer an answer to Kejido's question.

"Heh, I guess it does remind me a bit of home too, but there does seem to be an increase in altitude. Our women are... nice, I guess."

His response was kind of normal, putting on the facade that it was somewhat cheerful. Some people would be able to see through it, but it depended on the person. Ryo didn't see the point to respond to Kejido, but he did see the need to carry on the conversation to fix the awkward situation standing in line became. As if on queue, the line seemed to move a little bit forward. They were making progress, but it was clear they'd be there for a bit longer than they thought.

Kejido would grin a little at the young mans response. So technical and appropriate. It spoke leagues of him and yet with so little said some might make the mistake of thinking the boy anti social. Kejido however was socially perfected enough for the both of them. He would finish his quick sketch for a moment before his silver eyes took in the boy looking uncomfortable in line around all these people. His pencil would pause on the paper as he studied him a moment. An orphan from the orphanage. Repetitive but still held some points. He had always grown up in a system where one easily figured themselves a burden. They didn't dream of playing with dreams and fantasies because it meant taking from the others around them. Gave off a sense of them being suited for a lesser life. Even though he was a shinobi now he likely had never known luxury. Never enjoyed himself as fully as a rich man may have. It was a pity but there was a way around that. After all Kejido was good at being a showman. He just needed Ryo to be a part of it so he didn't mistake it for charity. If he helped earn it he might accept it more. So Kejido would speak up from his seated position as he tucked away his notebook.

"This line sure is inching along. Where do you plan on staying while here? Scratch that, I know what we will do. Just trust me and play along. Don't be shy now."

With a swift movement Kejido would rise to his feet and with his foot scoot his bag up towards the front of the gab in their spot in line they had made. He looked to the guy behind them and smiled before speaking up. "Save our spot please?" The rather elderly looking man nodded and didn't show much change in expression. Still Kejido took it and took Ryo by the arm. Attempting to tug him out of line and to the side. Tugging him out from the crowd and turning him once they were in view of everyone. With that he looked to him and leaned over to whisper but not to actually get intimately close. Ryo seemed to have anxiety about being touched. However his hand on his arm was to insistent to let him stay back in line all the same.

"You remember the kunai hand to hand combat drills in the academy? Well just follow those forms and I won't hurt you I promise. You brought a kunai right?"

If Ryo said he had Kejido would release his arm and pat him on the back of his shoulder once. If he didn't Kejido would shift his left arm and produce one into his hand before handing it over. With that he would smile like a Cheshire cat. Only to turn from Ryo and with a single hop jump onto a boulder overlooking the line. From there he would begin to announce in a very loud but controlled voice. Gathering the attention of the crowds in line. If Ryo was socially nervous before he was going to be appalled at this.

"Ladies and gentleman and everything in between. You have traveled from every corner of the continent and now wait in line for a show, Drained of energy from your travels and patience from having to wait on the last leg of your journey. Well wait no longer! We of the Iwagakure shinobi will be putting on a show for you right now. For your enjoyment my lovely assistant and I will be doing a full speed spar! Will there be blood? Will I overcome the hero or will he triumph over the evil warlord?! See for yourselves and enjoy! Donations will be accepted after the show."

It was important to realize how much Ryo was looking forward to his time with Kejido. he wasn't exactly glad that he was visiting another village unknown to him, but the person he was with did make him much happier than he would be otherwise. Kejido was a fellow genin and comrade of Ryo's, who Ryo seemed to be running into more and more. What the charming man thought of Ryo was a mysterious, but so were Ryo's to an extent. Ryo was captivated by him during their first meeting, and nothing really changed. They met each more and more after that, and surprisingly, Ryo didn't play a hand in their encounters. To Ryo, it was fate, causing them to run into each other at training station, and it was fate for Kejido to knock on his door that day, and it was fate for Kejido to be within Koudo Satajiamu. Ryo, however, wasn't used to repeated encounters such as these, especially if they're with the man of his dreams. Even though destiny dragged them together, Ryo was aware that his demeanor was embarrassing. His nervousness shined brightly as they spoke to one another, and Kejido seemed to be too bright for Ryo to actually look at him while talking as well. Would he be able to change the way Kejido saw him during this trip and face him like a man, or would he keep on admiring him in silence? He was going to change during this trip, and it seemed that waiting in line was his first step towards his change.

Despite him thinking his response would throw the man off, Kejido seemed rather pleased with it as a grin grew on his face. Ryo continued to watch him through the corner of his eye, not having the courage to fully face him yet. Kejido seemed to stop his sketching for a moment, and his eyes seemed to meet Ryo's stare for a moment as he began to study him. Ryo responded by turning his eyes away and started observing a mountaintop in the distance as if it was some mystical creature. As Kejido began to speak again, Ryo would turn towards him once more, since it was pretty rude to not look at someone while they're talking to you. However, Ryo was necessarily making eye contact, but instead, make eye contact with the buttons on Kejido's uniform. Kejido talked about where he planned to stay, and then quickly stated that he already had a plan. Was he implying that they would be staying together? Now that was definitely too fast for Ryo. Kejido told him not to be shy as if it was something he chose to be. It wasn't really that easy, you know. Ryo opened his mouth, trying to figure out what Kejido meant,

"Wait, what are y-,"

but he was quickly cut off by Kejido's movements. Kejido quickly stood up and kicked his bag towards another line waiter who seemed to be ready for it and asked for him to hold their spot. He was curious about the plan the Kejido seemed to be developing in his head but didn't really have the time to think about it as he watched him. Him getting up and kicking the bag seemed to be one swift movement, and it made Ryo wonder if he was actually perfect. As Kejido grabbed his arm, Ryo's grip instantly dropped the duffel bag he was holding as he got pulled forward. Now away from the crowd, Kejido leaned in to whisper something to him. He wasn't too close, but Ryo's face still turned red as he leaned his head away. Was Kejido entirely oblivious or did he know what he was doing to him? Kejido's hand stayed on his arm, and Ryo could feel that he wasn't planning on letting him run away from this situation. He asked if Ryo remember one of the many drills from the academy involving a kunai. Ryo responded to this with a clearly confused look that seemed to wash his embarrassed look away. As Kejido carried on, he eventually asked if he brought a kunai. Ryo just nodded before reaching into the pouch on his belt and pulling out your standard kunai.

He tightened and untightened his grip on the weapon, trying to get used to it again. It almost felt foreign to him. It's been almost a year since he was in the academy, and he couldn't seem to remember a time where he used a kunai between now and then. Still, the drills that Kejido mentioned were still engraved in his mind. Despite being lazy and almost entirely pathetic, Ryo still graduated from the academy. He was still a shinobi, and he could still fight. Even though he was slightly behind his peers from the way he chooses to live his life, they all were taught the same, and they all knew the same thing. As he gripped his kunai, Kejido seemed to start giving a speech. Like a magician entertaining a crowd, Kejido introduced Ryo as his assistant, stating that they were going to perform a spar for them. So that was what he had planned. This was going to be their way of gathering travel funds. Ryo didn't remember signing up for this, but he guessed traveling with Kejido came with doing whatever he wanted as well. He looked towards the suddenly intrigued crowd, who seemed to be oblivious to the line moving slightly once more. Everyone was watching them, finding their show more enticing then entering the exams. Ryo quickly looked away, turning his gaze towards Kejido on top of the boulder. A desperate look was given, but Ryo shook his head and dismissed the thoughts. This wasn't the time to run, this was the time to finally impress Kejido. He brought his hand holding the kunai close to his face, with his empty hand slightly more forward, ready to counter. He separated his legs and shifted his stance, shooting a determined look towards Kejido and saying the simple phrase:

"I'm ready."

Kejido could recall back to the days at the academy. As a kid he had been so proud to be trusted with a knife. They wanted them to understand the weight of it. How sharp it was and to get a feel for it. Even as a kid he had enjoyed them. Learning showy tricks with them and playing around. It wasn't until he was caught by his own grandfather that he had been scolded for playing around. He hadn't understood as a kid why he had to be serious all the time or just who he was to the clan. It had been more difficult back then. Trying to impress people when you were just what they expected from the generals grandson. If he stumbled it was frowned upon but no matter the leaps of success he took he never got more than an as expected. It was endlessly frustrating. Flooding his time with effort and personal trials. By graduation day he was able to take on multiple classmates in hand to hand and knife combat. Of course their tests were only with fake kunai. Still their graduation test was where he preformed his best. Managing to score the most points and only taking one in return. Having let down his guard with so much confidence.

After the academy he had expected to be the prime choice for any squads or group missions. To have his pick of sensei. He had such a great potential ahead of him and was going to strive for it. However much to his continued irritation his grandfather had stepped in once again. Forcing him to go on leave and spend the rest of his teenage years with his family. Forcing him to spend years as a civilian. He had never understood the man. On one hand he wasn't to play around and to take his career seriously. On the other hand he had to waste years just sitting around. Not that he had allowed his own skills to dull in that time frame. Practicing in private whenever his parents were not looking. However just to spite his grandfather he also practiced the tricks he had been warned against as well. Growing more familiar with them than he had been even as a small child over the years with nothing better to do. Still he suspected somewhere deep down his parents knew as did his grandfather. They always seemed to know everything.

However right that moment it was doing him rather well. The audience was eager for anything to distract them from just standing around in a line. Even better the gate guard didn't seem to give two craps about anyone sparring beyond simply watching to make sure it didn't get out of hand. Ryo had his kunai out already and that was a bonus. If he wasn't about to play along this would have been a waste of time and embarrassing. Maybe even enough to leave Kejido in a bit of a sour mood. With that said he would need to entertain the masses. His right hand whipped down to pull his kunai sheathed on his waist free. As it rose upwards he collected his middle finger into the ring in the bottom of the hilt and spun it expertly as little more than a metal blur. Letting it go to fly up into the air and spin upwards before falling down and being caught in his left hand. Only stopping the spin for a moment. He couldn't very well catch that ring as it spun like that just yet. The time where it stopped spinning though was so minimal that it gave off the illusion that maybe he had caught it spinning.

His silver eyes shifted to Ryo as he stated his readiness unexpectedly. A part of Kejido had expected more resistance to his plan. Perhaps a lack of confidence. However Ryo came off every bit as if they had actually planned this whole thing out. Kejido only hoped that the young man knew to pull his hits. If Ryo drew blood it would probably ruin Kejido's day. Even if it was a kunai and nothing more today wasn't an awesome day to lose a nipple. Still the posture was nice. Not a martial arts stance but still trained in knife combat. Ready to counter with an open hand while ready to strike with his blade right behind it. A good defense mixed with offense. Ryo was well prepared. Still Kejido knew he had the advantage here with his own martial arts. He would measure the kid out first and adjust as needed. Still he would suddenly shift himself to launch off the rock and come straight down to land in front of Ryo about a meter away. Keeping in a low crouch as he rushed forward. Keeping Ryo on his left side where his open hand was held up to shoulder level with palm facing down. The kunai in his right hand was held properly but not lashing out yet as it was further away from Ryo than his open hand. He was baiting him into attacking an obvious opening.
