This was definitely not the first time that Kashizudoto had attached a sign to a stand in the marketplace, reading in bold letters: "Bored Genin Looking to Spar at the Rolling Hills. He'd done this scheme many times before, and he'd learned a lot from sparring other ninja, much more than he would cooped up inside Konoha finding a lost cat. He was bored, after all, and until he could become a chuunin, Kashizudoto really wanted to test his mettle against stronger shinobi in order to improve his own skills. Losing would be a good thing; it would mean that he'd learn a lot from the spar. Winning was also very fun, of course.

As usual, Kashizudoto sported a green jacket which showed a little bit of his white undershirt. He wore his Konoha hitae-ate on his forehead as a sign of village pride and a fight on equal terms between whoever showed up, not to mention the protection it gave his head. On the left side of his average shinobi pants was a pouch holding a kunai and three shuriken that he brought with him for the spar. Even though he had a lot of skill in Kenjutsu, he did not buy a katana yet. This wasn't because he was lazy, rather he was smart with his ryo. He knew that he didn't have much practical use for a katana as a genin, only being assigned to lackluster D-rank and C-rank missions, so he would improve his skill in Kenjutsu to the point where he could buy and wield a B-rank katana as a chuunin, where he would go on high-risk missions which needed his all. Either way, the Sarutobis were masters of the Katon element; he always had his ninjutsu in store, katana or not. Regardless, he could not exploit his Kekkei Genkai, the Will of Fire Paladin, and Kekkei Genkai Jutsu, the Sword of the Will, without his Kenjutsu; however, he could salvage at least a bit of his Kekkei Genkai through hand-to-hand combat, although he was certainly no Taijutsu specialist - at least his strikes would be guided by the Will of Fire.

Because of the disadvantages, Kashizudoto knew that there was a high chance of losing. After all, the harder the challenge, the more he could learn. So he was excited for this match, patiently waiting for whoever his opponent was.

Never let it be said that Blake was not charitable.

It had been curious, at first, spotting a stray sign in the marketplace just after the crack of dawn with the inscriptions “Bored Genin Looking to Spar at the Rolling Hills”. She had taken it as some form of a sick prank played by one of the lesser children around town – the same children she used to exploit when she was still part of a group of nefarious individuals who’d have done all they could to reel child labour in, which was the only form of labour you received the least complaints from. Uneducated, they were unable to fend for themselves, or even to think to.

Nevertheless, three minutes of staring at the sign whilst she finished a bean bun had her opting to give it the benefit of the doubt, noting that the Rolling Hills in the wildernesses of the Land of Fire were nothing if not pretty, and that she required a form of retreat from active duty. There would be no missions to be had for the day; simply a visit to one of the more picturesque sites in the country; and should she discover this was not a hoax but rather a genuine request for a hand-to-hand meet, she would entertain the venture to the best of her ability.

The trip was brisk and silent, with but the morning chirps of bluebirds and crickets singing the songs of the woods as the morning dew dried up, providing her with a cool and calming atmosphere to walk with. The beaten path was soon abandoned for favour of the wilds, where grass surrounded everywhere her feet touched, first beginning as little more than strands no longer than an inch, before growing to a respectable foot in length. If she recalled correctly, the rolling hills, too, was home to such tall grass, one foot high; it served as many a reason why she loved it so.

Her arrival at one of the many mountains that made up the infamously and aptly named Rolling Hills was met with the sight of a stranger, quite possibly the man who had piqued her curiosity to the location with the sign he’d set up. He wore a green jacket, open to reveal his white undershirt, complemented by the village headband. His shinobi pants were worn in the same manner that most others did, and she compared this to her more complex and risque wear, a bow atop her head hiding her less than human appendages that simple accentuated the demure look her black-and-white outfit pursued. Demure or not, though, her yellow eyes were sharp, spotting that the boy was sitting at the center of the flatter portions of the Rolling Mountains, a fifty-meter-wide square flatland facing the woods and flanked on its three sides by hills dozens of meters tall.

Blake immediately inspected the area. The grass was tall, and uniform throughout, even on the hills themselves, its foot-long reach meaning her techniques would find it far easier to make the land her playground. The boy would be seated in a manner in which he was facing her as she approached, hence her walking up to him would be nothing of a sneak. She stopped five meters from the boy, keeping her eyes on his frame before addressing him.

“Are you the Genin looking for a spar?” she asked, with a hint of amusement in her voice at having found a living soul in this area, courtesy of the ridiculous sign he’d strung up.

After fifteen minutes of waiting, it seemed that Kashizudoto had found a sparring partner. It was a girl with black hair and piercing yellow eyes who was wearing a peculiar - somewhat risque and a little complicated - black and white outfit.

"Are you the Genin looking for a spar?" she said with a hint of amusement in her voice, like this situation was funny.

"Yup, said the boy, "I'm Kashizudoto". He made sure to leave out his clan's name, as that could give the girl some clues about his abilities.

"I haven't brought a katana with me," admitted Kashizudoto to his opponent with an embarassed smile, "So I won't be at full strength. Still, I think this will be a good spar."

As he was talking to his opponent, he was already gathering Katon chakra in his mouth, suddenly releasing it all out into a noxious gas cloud that was 10 cubic meters while gripping his kunai in the case of a Taijutsu attack.

That was no ordinary gas cloud; it was extremely flammable, to the point where it would amplify any Katon jutsu that went through it by one degree of burns. Seeing as this girl, being 5 meters away from Kashizudoto, was literally inside the gas cloud, this would be interesting.

“Yup,” the boy answered. “I’m Kashizudoto.”

No last name was provided. Between his two statements, Blake was already preparing, having been alerted to signs of danger by his confirmation that he was indeed the individual seeking a spar. Kashizudoto had arrived in the vicinity before her, long before presumably, and there were no telling of what traps he could have set; she would have to tread carefully and swiftly.

“I haven’t brought a katana with me,” he mentioned, “So I won’t be at full strength. Still, I think this will be a good spar.”

Immediately after the end of his sentence, he blew outwards. Blake was unable to detect the sparks of flame, but she feared to underestimate his ability, given the ferocity with which he had kicked off their spar, hiking up her adrenaline in the process. As such, as soon as he blew outwards, Blake fueled her being with chakra, taking off at ten meters per second at a thirty degree angle to her left. She would stop forty-five degrees clockwise from Kashizudoto’s current perspective with a distance of one meter between them, having reached it in half a second, less even. A clone in her exact image would stand in her place, bound to her by the thin shadow strand hidden by the foot-tall grass.

From Kashizudoto’s view, he would simply see a second Blake having seemingly split from the first’s body, dashing closer to him, with the one in front of him the only one trapped within the gaseous cloud, with absolutely nothing to alert him of her tricky bloodline.

Upon reaching her destination, Blake would not falter, a kunai already withdrawn and held in a reverse-grip in her right hand during the dash, and would instantly leap at him, slashing leftwards with her right hand at his gut, intent on carving a gash in his abdomen. Her first copy would jog from its position within the noxious cloud, approaching the duo at two meters per second, a kunai also held in the same fashion. As this occurred, another strand of Blake’s shadow would snake outwards between his feet, hidden once again by the thankfully long grass to materialise behind Kashizudoto a second copy of Blake, this one armed with a kunai in her right hand and three senbon in her left.

The second copy would be completely outside his field of vision, and without the body heat or natural noises most individuals let off, would hide her presence completely from Kashizudoto. She would aim to slash her still-blunt weapons harmlessly down Kashizudoto’s calves, testing if he would escape.

Kashizudoto, with his good perceptive skills (D-1), would spot Blake splitting into two, with one copy staying put and another seemingly teleporting to about a meter away from him, probably using a Body Flicker-esque technique, with a kunai in hand - leaping at him to attack his abdomen. Was this Kage no Bunshin? No, only chuunin and above could hope to master a technique like that. So then it must have been a normal clone technique. If the one next to him was able to use a jutsu to flicker over, that must have meant that the one actually in the gas cloud must have been a clone!

Due to his quick reaction time (D-0), while keeping what he suspected to be a clone within peripheral vision, he took out the kunai that he already had a grip on from before and used it to quickly block the attack going for his gut while simultaneously attacking her - aiming for her chest - with his left fist. Even though his strength (E-3) wasn't really much, his strike was now guided by his bloodline trait - the Will of Fire Paladin. This meant that now that he had cast a Katon jutsu, his speedy (D-0) strike would cause noticeable soreness and heavy bruising, while knocking the girl back an entire meter (D-3 damage) into the air.

Would she somehow escape Kashizudoto's strike?

Blake felt the solid steel of her kunai clash against the boy’s own, meeting firmly in a grip of metal upon metal. While she would not have noticed the balled fist, it didn’t mean she was anywhere close to getting hit. Having heard the clang of her kunai against his and the pressure of his guard against her strike, she dashed at a speed of ten meters per second to a point two meters away, essentially blinking out of place with the speed at which she moved and leaving a clone in her place, in the exact stance she was in, allowing her to take stock of the attack that would’ve connected with her right had she remained statically in place.

Meanwhile, throughout the entirety of the maneuver, meeting the boy’s kunai and escaping, her second clone, the one behind him, would have had both its weapons slash against his calves, dragging themselves down to his shins. While initially blunt, upon feeling the touch of her shadow against flesh, Blake channeled chakra through her shadow, instantly sharpening the tips of the supposed kunai and senbon to dig one and a half inches into his calves. With the speed at which they were pulled, the wounds would only be registered by the boy’s mind, and the subsequent loss of control of most of his lower legs, only after the act had been done, essentially incapacitating him. At around this time, Blake’s true self would also have just landed at her newly designated spot. Following the attack, Blake’s second clone would immediately attempt to repeat her slashes, flipping the kunai and senbon into a forward grip and dragging upwards behind the boy’s thighs from his knees to beneath his buttocks.

Simultaneously, the clone in the gas, Blake’s first clone, would dash out of its gaseous confines, attacking the boy. As he had turned forty-five degrees to his right to face Blake’s self when he’d blocked her attack and retaliated with one of his own, he would see the clone approaching him at forty-five degrees to his left. At a distance of one meter, her first clone would duck and seemingly retrieve a kunai with its right hand, held in a forward grip, aimed at stabbing a point on the boy’s left hip.

Her third clone would take the brunt of his attack, before losing form and dropping instantly to the ground, disappearing under the grass and somewhat sinking into it before it returned to its form as her shadow, hiding the true mechanics behind her technique.

All that would occur within the span of a second, following which Blake would dash to her left, such that she was now three meters away from the boy, forty-five degrees to his right.

Bam! The attack connected with the girl, which should have sent her flying back - being amplified by the Will of Fire. Upon being hit, however, it seemed that she was starting to lose her form. His quick reaction time and perception came in handy, as he realized instantly that it must have been a clone! Suddenly, it dropped to the ground. What was going on??? He was almost sure that one was the real one. All these clones dancing around Kashizudoto was giving him a serious headache. It was getting extremely obnoxious.

Ouch! Kashizudoto felt a sharp object piercing into his legs. How... How did she get down there? What could be going on? Perhaps this girl really did know Kage no Bunshin. If so, was she really even a genin?  Having his legs being stabbed, he would be incapacitated if the attack finished. With sharp reflexes aiding his perception, he pulled out his legs from the fray and leaped, landing forward on his bum into the grass. He took less than a second to analyze the position: in short, he'd lost. There was no use dragging this out and ending up in the hospital.

Losing a simple spar wasn't a big deal to Kashizudoto, although he - admittedly - wasn't very used to losing and always enjoyed winning over the other; however, he would be royally pissed if he didn't learn anything from the loss. What could be gained from this here? He didn't even know the specifics of her technique. How did this all work? The how was interesting Kashizudoto. If he knew this, he would have a new understanding of techniques for the future. So perhaps he'd be up front about his inquiry.

"Alright, I've lost. No point in dragging this out," said Kashizudoto, who wasn't very sure what direction to face because he still didn't know where the real one was, and added, "What technique did you use? I find it hard to believe that a genin has such advanced techniques. Did the terrain play a part in this, perchance? I'm sure the tall grasses could be hiding something of interest with your technique. As he said this, he was poking around the ground trying to find something hidden underneath - to no avail. Perhaps the girl could clarify.

After getting the response, he decided to take off for the village - in style, of course. He grabbed a ton of grass, throwing it up in the air to mask himself. Then he vitalized his body with chakra and activated the Body Flicker Technique to instantly disappear from the scene. By the time the grass had settled to the ground, he was gone.

Blake didn’t opt to observe the fruits of her labour, instead hastening forward after the single second it took to move into her new location, intending to push on with the flurry of her assaults. Her clones were already preparing to follow-up with her actions, each controlled finely and almost to perfection. However, as the boy tumbled forward, calves bleeding from the brunt of her previous attack, Blake halted a meter from him, wary still.

It was clear their spar had been cut short. He was currently sitting on his bottom, looking up at them, the myriad of Blake and her copies that were approaching him from near all directions – surely a frightening sight had they not been engaged in but a simple spar between allies.

His eyes flitted about, no doubt attempting to analyze the cause of his injury, and her clones stood at their relative positions in watch. Of course, it was all for show. They didn’t truly need to see, for they were just apparitions she manipulated with a flick of her will. The boy seemed confused which of her many copies to address, before turning to the clone that had cut a pair of parallels behind his legs. She found it ironic, in fact, that he would turn to the one clone that managed to injure him for answers on his situation.

"Alright, I've lost. No point in dragging this out. What technique did you use? I find it hard to believe that a genin has such advanced techniques. Did the terrain play a part in this, perchance? I'm sure the tall grasses could be hiding something of interest with your technique.”

Blake – and all her copies – gave a faint smile. It was genuine, but not the one that Blake associated with happiness. Maybe amused would have been a more accurate description of how she was currently feeling, watching the boy poke around the ground around him, unaware that there were no hidden devices or traps that had been the core of her fighting style. Her techniques were shadows. There was little one would find if they simply patted the ground upon which they stood – they were shadows, after all.

“They were Shadow Clones,” she replied in brief.

Seemingly satisfied with the answer, the boy grasped tightly a bunch of tall grass, before throwing it carelessly into the air, at the same time vanishing in what was only the renowned Body Flicker technique. Convinced she was all but alone in the area, she allowed her clones to recede, falling back into shadows on the ground, before they too returned to her as the chakra powering them was cut off. It was not the most beneficial of learning experiences, and Blake could hardly believe the exchange had transpired in several seconds, but she began her slow trek back to the village, hiding the kunai back within her pouch.
