The training grounds were dry and relatively cool, and the field that Joruri had chosen was perfect. She had barely asked her question before Joruri asked her if she was part of a squad. It appeared that great minds thought alike. The two were more similar in age than the other genin in their class, and would be the obvious choice of a pairing.

"No, I am not yet part of a team. I have searched high and low, and been unable to find teammates or a sensei."

She hoped that she was hearing the tone of his voice correctly. If this young man truly wanted to form a team with her, then her long search would be over. She doubted that they would be recognized officially, but if they did good enough work then perhaps someone in town would notice--a benefactor, another perspective comrade, or maybe even a respected shinobi that could take them under his or her wing.

"Perhaps, if you like our efforts in training together today, we could join forces."

Shinako smiled warmly and shed her satchel to the ground as she said this, walking out to take the field with her new companion. Of course, her ideal teammate would have to work well with others, and share some common sense of desire for self-improvement through service. However, even as she thought this, Shinako stopped herself. She wasn't exactly in a position to be making demands of anyone who might be willing to work with her, talentless and aged as she was. Before becoming a shinobi, she would never have considered his mid-twenties to be old, but now here she was, in a mad scramble, grasping at straws to form one of the most basic shinobi units. It was a matter in which, she decided, she could not afford an over-inflated sense of pride.

There was a pause in the conversation after his previous question. Was she surprised that he was asking her? He didn't know, but he continued on as if he were oblivious to the fact, it was best to not pester when asking a question like that. Their interactions were few in recent time and he didn't know how she would react to such a question. I mean, she wasn't even wearing her headband in the hospital. He wondered back to the time thoughtfully.

Then she answered.

After she had, he wasn't entirely certain as to how to respond. "It's not that bad to be working solo truth be told." He said wistfully as he slipped his hands out of his pockets. "That is, if you prefer working alone. Together there are the obvious benefits of those to watch your back, and to build the right team with the perfect synergy." He shrugged. At that point he was just ranting.

If they were to prove their teamwork was good enough, not to mention their reputation became reputable, then they'd certainly be recognized as a team. And then, they'd have to get a sensei. But with the Chunnin Exams nearing, was there really a point to making a team? He shook his head.

I don't know how the Chunnin Exams work, so when the time comes we may need each other. He nodded. Yeah, it was certainly a good idea to form a team now.

"Of course."

Whilst he had gone over his thoughts and they spoke, he was increasing the distance between the two shinobi. If they were going to be fighting, it was probably best to not be right beside each other, right? A small smile stretched his face ever so slightly.

"Just tell me when you're ready."

As Joruri walked further away from her Shinako thought of how nice it would be to warm up with a friendly spar for once, as opposed to being ambushed by roving groups of pre-teens seeking to ostracize her from the training area. She jumped from one foot to the other a few times to limber up before turning back to Joruri. The other genin was now about thirty meters away from her. Already her palms were beginning to become sweaty with nervousness and anticipation. Perhaps this was her time to prove herself. She did not know anything of her new companion's skills, but she assumed that they were greater than her own.

"I think I'm ready whenever you are."

She raised her right hand in front of her in a prohibitive gesture, turning side-on so as to minimize her size as a target. If he tried to rush her with taijutsu, she felt as though she would be woefully underprepared. Her left hand moved to the inside of her sash, where she kept her tool kit, just over her left hip. She thought of just how many children had assumed this exact stance just before playing a quick-draw shuriken game and immediately felt a little bit silly. She hoped that she her embarrassment did not show on her face too much.

"Now, Joruri-san...don't take it easy on me just because I am a girl. Really test me, to see if I have skills that you would desire in a teammate."

With that, her left hand finished the work that it had set out to do, drawing a senbon needle from her pouch. With a quick turn of her body too a stance mirroring the one she had originally taken, Shinako let the needle fly, aiming for the dead center of Joruri's chest. The sparring session had officially begun.

They were quite the distance away from each other. She certainly looked significantly smaller at such a range, and he smiled. If he were to run at her, he knew he could close the distance, but there was a chance he could run into a projectile. It definitely wasn't the ideal thing to do, especially in the beginning of a duel.

In the open plains there wasn't a tree that was close enough to set a location for substitution jutsu before they got at it. That's saddening. He thought, but then his gaze flicked back over to Shinako just as she started to make herself a smaller target and after she finished talking.

"Don't worry, I wouldn't do that." He said with a faint chuckle that she probably couldn't hear from that distance but probably see. He started to run forwards, and as he did, gathered his chakra for a split second and as three of them appeared in front of him spaced a meter ahead of him, the one that was directly in front of him disappeared into a puff of smoke.

Ugh, I didn't even see that. He thought as the now current trio closed the distance to about twenty meters, and as they continued to run forwards, the one on Joruri's right crossed over in front of Joruri in the same instant that the left one did. But, instead of swapping places entirely, Righty stopped in the middle concealing the clone and the real Joruri for only a moment as Joruri went to the left, and Lefty went to the right.

It was to hopefully confuse the opponent as to which Joruri was the real one, but it'd be easy to figure out anyway, they were only E-Ranked clones anyway.

When they were hopefully in range, both clones leapt into the air to hopefully take Shinako's attention away from him as he widened his course to about five meters to the side and went towards her at a flank. Now, he was only ten meters away from her, it was up to her reaction to the clones whether or not his plan was going to work.

It took Shinako only a split second to tell why she could intuitively discern which Joruri was the true one the entire time. She had become so accustomed to paying attention to shadows her entire life that a normal clone, which did not cast a shadow, was immediately apparent to her. It was an advantage of her training in Inton that she had never stopped for a moment to think about before now.

Angling her shadow across the ground, rotating it like a sun-dial, clockwise to follow Joruri, she formulated her plan. Kicking up dirt and grass in the real Joruri's direction with her right foot, Shinako leaped right through the clone in front of her, performing the snake and rat handseals as she did so. Dust and blades of grass flew everywhere, and the clone that she had contacted dispersed. It was an almost stunning flurry of motion, and when the dust settled, only a few blades of grass remained, twirling slowly to the ground around Joruri as he dashed into what appeared to be empty space.

In fact, even though she had only retreated to a space ten meters to Joruri's right-hand side, it would appear to him as though she had dissappeared, as through the shunshin jutsu. In fact, her chakra now poured into the other genin as her genjutsu took hold.

This particular genjutsu was subtle at first, hopefully allowing her time to maneuver around him while he searched for her. She would be able to tell when the jutsu took effect almost immediately, activating the fear-centers of his brain and showing him the things that he feared most in the world. Shinako had used this jutsu only once before, and it had worked superbly, reducing another genin to a puddle of urine and tears before the end.

Dirt and grass circled him, it twrield around his body momentarily blinding him as he reactively blinked to a blade of grass and dirt getting into his eyes. That's really mature Shinako. He thought to himself with a bemused look on his face as he opened his eyes again.

But he had already stopped moving, and Shinako was gone. She wasn't even behind him, or anywhere in his line of sight. It surprised him, but he was forced to blink again from the dirt in his eyes.

All around him he saw images of death, of past comrades and current ones and he tensed. Not because he was scared or actually cared that they were dead, but it was because it was so sudden. A blink, and then horrorific images appeared before him.

He turned around and what he saw in front of him actually caused him to waver in what had been a confident stance. His knees grew weak, as he saw the scene that haunted him for months be played through his mind. But he didn't see it form his view as he usually dreamed about, no, he saw from what appeared to be someone else's perspective.

They were low in a bush, and then suddenly the bush was gone and replaced in a flash of white and orange colours. In the clear field ahead of him it didn't look right for their to be three corpses. The corpses of his former squad mates. Why am I seeing this?

His teeth were clenched together as the sound of growling emanated from his throat. It was pure anger in a flash of light that grabbed hold of his emotions. He knew it was a genjutsu, but he didn't know how to proceed from his current stance, he was clamped with fear and anger, all he could do was shake as his hands rose from his sides and to his front...

Though Shinako had never been subjected to the technique herself, she understood that the Narakumi no Jutsu was a particularly insidious one. It had less to do with the deliberate intentions of the caster, and more to do with the innermost workings of the opponent's brain. For that reason, the results were not as predictable as the normal genjutsu, but they could be violently more drastic. As she viewed the look on Joruri's face and was glad that she had never had the profound displeasure of falling prey to this particular genjutsu. Keeping her concentration on the illusion, Shinako circled around to Joruri's back side, moving out to a distance of twenty meters.

As the girl went, she picked up pebbles and flecks of shale, gathering eight chunks of rock of varying shapes and sizes, though all slightly larger than a man's thumb. She also collected her senbon needle, tucking it back into her tool-kit. As she reached her destination, she threw them out into a semi-circle between herself and Joruri, each one about three meters away from her. Eyes locked on the young man's back, she almost felt sorry for what she was doing to him. Fear was fear, regardless of whether the trigger was real or not. Her father had taught her this technique as a distraction tactic. It had played out its purpose and allowed her to get ready for her next jutsu. Something that she had also learned from her father was that Jutsu were useless unless they were used in clever conbinations.

Shinako dropped to one knee, crouching like a tiger about to pounce. She held the sign of confrontation in front of her, just beneath her chin, focusing her chakra to maintain the illusion and readying herself for her prepared follow-up should her opponent escape.

Damn.

He thought to himself one last time as his eyes flickered over the corpses of his team mates, but he had already resisted the effects of the genjutsu enough, he had gotten over the first shock of the genjutsu. He would've assumed she was a Ninjutsu user, just like him, but he was wrong as his hands came together and he muttered the word "Kai." As he disrupted his chakra flow and then it restarted after dispelling the genjutsu.

It was only a 'friendly' spar, but he knew he wasn't going to forget that easily.

Letting his gaze flick around the area, he noticed all of the corpses were gone. The Kai had been successful. But he didn't linger on that for long. Swinging his head side to side, he knew Shinako wasn't there. So she had to be behind him, and when he turned around to check if that was indeed true, there she was twenty metres odd away from him.

Genjutsu, huh? He took multiple steps back, but stayed in a crouch as he drew out a kunai. He took note of Shinako's crouched position. She can't react right away... If I move fast enough.

He moved. Launching himself forwards as he flung the kunai towards Shinako's crouched centremass from his right hand, and in that same movement brought his left and right hand togetheras he slammed his hands together for a second, from there he should've been at most 13 metres away from her.

The moment he felt a second has passed, he threw his hands out towards Shinako "Gale Palm!" He cried as a powerful gale erupted from both his hands, pushing and carrying the kunai to even greater speeds towards Shinako's form.

As Joruri broke free from her genjutsu, Shinako formed the Dragon, Rat, Horse, and Tiger handseals all in sequence before realizing, too late, what was coming her way. Even as the rocks that she had gathered floated into the air at the bidding of her chakra they were dashed aside by the strongest gust of wind that Shinako had ever felt. One of the stones clipped her shoulder as it flew backwards past her, distracting her from the kunai knife that her opponent had thrown. As her body was knocked back by the wind and the rock, the accelerated knife connected with the right side of her chest, clanging against a rib and sticking there.

Pain shot through the entire right side of Shinako's body as she sprawled backwards to avoid the worst of the wind attack, sustaining only minor cuts on her right cheek and forearm. She had been unprepared for such a violently fast attack, and had paid the price. She could feel the warm trickle of blood now running down her side from blade of the kunai still lodged in her flesh. However, she knew that more pain was in store if she did not retaliate quickly enough.

She rolled backwards, pulling the knife from her side and brandishing it with her left hand. her elaborate plan to pummel her opponent with rocks had failed, and it was now time for plan B. While appearing to remain inactive and defensive, Shinako snaked her shadow through the grass, following its natural pattern so as to draw as little attention as possible. As a further distraction she returned the curtesy of the kunai knife, throwing it deftly at Joruri and taking a hop forward to close the distance. For this combination she only had to appear as though she were interested in engaging in taijutsu.

Her jump carried her two meters, closing the distance between her and Joruri to elven. Hopefully the young man would have a difficult time arresting his own forward momentum, closing the distance even further. Her shadow had stretched to one meter long and was now angled directly in Jururi's direction. It was the perfect striking distance. Behind the kunai, the shadow rose swiftly from the ground, shooting out in a thin tendril at maximum speed designed to strike Joruri between the legs with concussive force.

When the rocks had fallen to the floor, he paid little attention to that as he slowly began to slow down. He had taken note that his kunai had penetrated her body, but he wasn't slowing down for that. It was in the right side of the chest, not her left, he wouldn't go for a killing blow like that. There would be no one to vouch that it was an accident, plus, she was supposed to be on his new squad!

When she threw the kunai at him, he couldn't help but ducked to the side for a moment, but his eyes were always on Shinako. Because of his duck, it had obviously changed his stance therefore unbalancing him momentarily when he took note of her shadow reaching further ahead of her, but she also jumped and as he started to raise up he couldn't help but jump upwards when he noticed the shadow heading straight for his groin area, and he tucked his knees into his body to cover the area between his legs as the shadow crashed into the flesh area of his leg.

It knocked him backwards, skidding through the grass and dirt and he laid there on the ground momentarily, stunned at the raw power of the attack.

Oops.

Was the last thought he remembered as he slowly struggled to his feet. It was his right leg that had taken the brunt of the attack, and after that it had clearly become the weakest. He knew that, and he wondered if Shinako would notice as quickly as he had.

When he finally got back to his feet, his left hand moved around his body, to his ninja pouch and releasing the three shuriken that were located within. From there, he lunged with his right leg, and tucked into a roll instead of further bruising his already damaged right bottom half.

The three shuriken were released straight at her to prevent her from completing any repeated shadow techniques, or even genjutsu that she was perhaps performing. It was more or less done as a delaying tactic so that he may prepare himself.

Shinako felt as her shadow connected with the young man. It was not the solid strike that she had been hoping for, but it was good enough. Her shadow no longer had the element of surprise, and would have to rely on its raw speed to attack further. She saw as Joruri released his shuriken attack, though it did not seem to be any more complicated than that; three shuriken aimed directly at her. She threw herself to the ground like a kabuki player avoiding a dragon that swooped overhead, that is to say, rather dramatically, rolling to her feet and striking a pose, with her right hand applying pressure to the wound in her side.

As she slid to her right, she torqued her shadow to follow Joruri, rushing toward him, giving her shadow more distance to attack. She moved to within five meters. All the while, her shadow stalked Joruri, keeping low to the ground like a coiled snake, and jet-black tendril floating in the air. Once Shinako had closed in, it struck out three times, once towards the chin, solar plexus, and right hip in sequence. It struck with almost twice the speed of a good punch, and though it could not cut, it could deliver some pretty hefty blows. Continuing to play her part in the barrage, Shinako picked up one of the rocks that she had utilized earlier and threw it directly at Joruri's left flank, hoping to bean him with it.

Shinako had decided earlier that it would be in her best interest to show Joruri a little bit of what Inton could do. However, she had not yet decided if it was the right time to reveal to him her shadow paralysis jutsu.

"This is the Nara clan's Inton. It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'shadow boxing'."

By the time she had dodged the shuriken he was back up to his feet from his own roll. When she had regained her balance, the shadow was already snaking towards him again, and the only thing he was able to do was, twist his head to the side ever so slightly as he was struck, as if he were being cuffed over the ear as a punishment. But he couldn't focus on that anymore when he was struck in what felt like was his stomach and he bent forwards as he was struck in the right hip, only accentuating the pain in his thigh as he cried out.

The moment he cried out, his teeth clamped downwards on his tongue. This doesn't look too good, huh? It wasn't the best idea to move into medium range. His teeth grinded upon each other. Damn.

Then he was struck in the flank on his left side, and he tensed up at the sudden pain, but he didn't drop. He couldn't let himself be taken down so easily!

He struggled to crawl forwards as he exhaled.

"You're better than I thought," he said while he glanced upwards at her from behind his curtain of white hair. Was there even a chance of him still being able to win? Who knew, he had received such a beating from her only moments before and he wasn't even sure if she was going to continue just to put him in the hospital again. But at the end of the day, that wouldn't be so bad.

Shinako's shadow connected cleanly, as did her rock attack. She watched as Joruri took the blows like a champ, thinking of how unpleasant that must have been. Her shadow coiled again as though about to strike, but Shinako formed the seal of confrontation, freezing it in place. The penumbral rope swayed back and forth as it slowly sunk back down to the grass, finally laying flat. It slithered silently without so much as disturbing a blade until it came to rest in its natural position. Shinako then stood upright from her fighting stance, raising her hands in the universal sign of surrender.

She knelt down, taking a deep breathe to indicate that she was done fighting. As the adrenaline stopped pumping, she realized just how bad the kunai wound she had sustained hurt. She grimaced visibly while she untied her sash and wrapped it tightly around the bleeding cut. The kimono was ruined anyway, and she had gotten used to that.

"You got me good with that kunai. This will take a bit of time to heal. That was a very interesting jutsu. Was it fuuton?"

Shinako often found herself jealous of her peers' ability to utilize nature transformation. All of her time and efforts had been spent on learning Inton, and even with that she had had a late start. In a real fight, the technique that Joruri had used may have targeted her face or neck, dealing massive damage. Her weakness, as of now, was a lack of defensive jutsu, and it probably would not take any opponent in the chunin exams very long to learn that. At the heart of everything, she was still a one-trick pony.

"It was so fast...there was no way that I was going to dodge it. I had a jutsu prepared to ambush you, and you blew right through it."

Raising his left hand to his face, he rubbed the confusion off of his face. This hair has to be cut. I notice that now. He sighed. Not to mention it's simply a mess, it could be a detriment with the coming Exams.

"Yeah." He said with a reserved tone. It was less for what he felt towards her, and more towards the pain that he was feeling as he did his best to not move at all. If he did, he knew he was going to be feeling the pain from both of his legs, credit going to Shinako for that.

"Your shadow techniques are well practiced" He was going to start getting up. The stinging pain in his left leg had subsided enough for him to start wanting to actually try and stand, and so he did, focusing on his left leg and side to get him to his feet.

If he wanted to beat Shinako in the future he was going to have to perfect longer ranged jutsu, and to perfect his clan's kekkei genkai. And soon.

"I noticed the rocks, but I didn't want to get in a closer range to you, I didn't know what you were going to do with them. The wind technique was my best bet I guess." He nodded his head as he dragged his right leg with his left and right arm and balanced on the flat of his feet.

From her kneeling position, Shinako bowed deeply. She was in a lot of pain, but otherwise greatful for a good session. She was very pleased with what she had seen. Other genin had injured her through various means, but not with sophisticated techniques designed to counter and overcome. Joruri fought with intelligence, and that was something that she admired.

"I am impressed with what I have seen today, Joruri-san."

Despite the stabbing and stinging under her right arm, she smiled genuinely. Shinako could not remember a better moment in training, as this was one of the only times that she had shared her practice with another person, freely and productively.

"If you would have me, I would like very much to have you as a comrade going into the future."

She meant what she said. She would need people to watch her back, and had an innate desire to watch the backs of others. If by accident she had discovered that type of relationship on this beautiful sun-lit day, then she felt as though the world was a better place for it. She stood to face Joruri as an equal, looking him in the eye as though making her proposal to join forces formally. A slight wind blew between the two as though the spirit of destiny had chosen that exact moment to roll through, quieting the area. Shinako remembered her father's speeches about the Kami, and how they liked to witness occasions that would change the world, gathering and watching eagerly. She was sure that they watched and waited for Joruri's answer.

Joruri inclined his head to her kneeling bow. Despite what they had gone through, it really was a good spar. They learned much about each others techniques. He smiled as he finally stood straight, leaning on his left side. Her shadow techniques, were almost impossible to dodge in their close proximity. Throughout the battle he was understanding that she was a close range fighter rather than a more medium to long range one. If she was able to close the distance, there would be less time for the opponent to dodge the shadow technique that had badly bruised his right thigh.

She complimented him again, but he figured he had already said enough and in reply he inclined his head in thanks. You could only compliment someone so much. But...

"You are as skilled as you are beautiful, Shinako-Chan." He said with a faint chuckle before he went through a fit of coughing. He had to admit that she was attractive, and maybe if he were a little older, but to even think about that sort of thing wasn't in the works, not for a while for him. His only want in the world was to prove himself in the Exams.

After he was standing up straight, he noticed that she was still on the ground. She was the winner, and yet she remained below him, he could only raise an eyebrow to their situation, but he lowered a hand to help her up, even if it hurt the whole bottom right half of his body to do so.

"It's funny really..." He started off slowly. "We leave the hospital, only to have to return there in the end."

What a joke.

After helping Shinako up to her feet, he started the long trek back to the hospital.
