If anything's still unclear, just message me.
There was obviously a good reason why Kirigakure was considered the village hidden in the mist.
Thick clouds of fog lingered in the air, painting white stripes across the tree trunks at the edge of the woods.
Misoka rose to her feet a tad dizzily after sitting out in the boat for at least two hours and being totally wrapped up in the clothes Taku had forced her to wear. Not that he cared about her welfare at the moment.
With a short, but firm pull at her chain, he motioned for her to get going.
The metal tightened around her leg again, always the same spot, still hurting. She didn’t really feel like checking the injury anytime soon. All she hoped for was that it wouldn’t become infected if it hadn’t already.
“Stop pulling, I’m on my way!” Misoka grumbled half-heartedly, knowing that the man wasn’t going to pay attention to any of her complains.
Ever since their boat had reached the waterside, restlessness had gotten hold of him to an extent that it seemed even unusual for him.
Since he wasted no time in moving forward at a swift pace, figure crouched slightly, Misoka needed to break into a light jog to keep up with the man.
“Quiet,” a whisper escaped his lips alongside a cloud of steam as the words assumed shape in the freezing air.
Unnecessary piece of advice as Misoka thought while fighting the urge to roll her eyes. Come to think of it, no-one would see her do that anyway considering the mask which covered her face.
A more important question emerged in her mind when they walked straight into the dense forest.
Taku seemed to know exactly where they should be heading, but hadn’t he told her he wanted to meet his parents? What now, did they live in the wilderness like… savages? Or was that a whole new level of insanity?
In Taku’s current state of tenseness, it might be best to leave this question unspoken, though.
They had been walking through the woods endlessly when they finally reached a clearing where Taku halted.
“We’re here,” he stated in a low voice and turned to look at her.
Misoka let her gaze flicker across the area. There was no-one around. What an idiot.
“Oh… really?” She prevented herself from making a spiteful comment. Unless his parents could be two trees, he had been talking nonsense all along.
Taku, however, placed a smile on his lips. Within seconds, he formed hand signs, shaping a large amount of water into a giant dragon. A roar emerged from the beast’s mouth.
The Water Dragon Bullet Technique. Misoka staggered back. What was that about? First, he’d told her to be quiet and now he was summoning, let’s say, a great deal of noise.
Stretching his arm out casually, Taku sent the dragon into … the ground. A booming crash followed as the water collided with the earth and dug a hole before dissolving at its master’s behest.
Next, the man got to his knees and took out two small vessels.
At that point, Misoka believed nothing could shock her anymore, but this soon proved to be a misapprehension.
“May I introduce you…” Taku smiled again. “…my parents?”
In total disbelief, she stared at the vessels which both contained black dust… no, ashes. It couldn’t be.
“This is my father.” His voice sounded high-pitched, a sign that his emotional disturbance had reached its climax once more. He raised one of the vessels. “Simple. He cut off my balls, I killed him.”
That was just… sick. Misoka tried not to listen; her sense of hearing, however, picked up every word.
“And my mother. She didn’t help me so I killed her, too. Then I decided to burn both of them and bury them here.” Madness flashed in his eyes when he looked at her. “Say hello, will you? They’ll be glad that I have finally found a best friend.”
Instead of following his command, Misoka grimaced behind her mask. Why, just why did she have to be stuck with a psychopath who, by the way, had burned his parents?
All of a sudden, an arrow flew towards them. Taku leaped back, automatically pulling her with him. There was the sound of footsteps approaching, voices calling out of the woods.
Then, more arrows, kunais and shurikens.
Now they were under fire.
As best as they could, the two dodged the missiles, but when Taku let go of the chain for a moment in order to strike back, Misoka didn’t care about the attackers anymore.
She just picked up the end of the chain and started running.
Taku’s infuriated voice shouted after her so that she assumed the hostile forces had reached him. Otherwise, he would have caught up to her already.
“COME BACK! I’LL KILL YOU! I’ll flay your skin alive, chop your head off, cut you into pieces and burn you to ashes! You’ll be buried right next to my parents! COME BACK!”
Shut up! Why don’t you dig yourself a grave, Misoka thought, a grin scurrying across her features despite the direness of the situation. She dashed through the forest, the mist enveloping her figure, branches cracking underneath her feet.
For now, she needed to find her way back to the boat so she could use it to escape from Kirigakure.
Too bad that this seemed more impossible than she’d thought. Due to the fog, every part of the forest looked extremely alike. Okay, plan B. She would just try to get to the village somehow and arrange her departure there.
Find a way out of the forest, then. Of course this didn’t sound any easier.
But nevertheless, nothing could spoil her joy at the moment, that overwhelming feeling of freedom she had yearned for since five whole years. This was it. She would leave the past behind once and for all. She would start anew and truly taste this life, not only scratch the surface of it.
Her own thoughts made her almost laugh out loud. Finally.
Everything would be alright.
Then a kunai swept past her face. The next instant, she found herself almost bumping into a puppet. Misoka bit back a curse. Why did she have to run into some enemies now that Taku could be on her heels any moment? Worse, this forest was obviously a part of what you would call frontlines in a war.
Whatever. One puppet was nothing. She didn’t have any weapons with her, but she preferred ninjutsu anyway.
Before she could raise her hands to weave hand seals, however, a male voice boomed from the top of a tree. “An ANBU! I spotted a Kiri ANBU! Reinforcements!”
Misoka furrowed her brows. What… an ANBU? Hah, she wished she was that skilled. Only then it occurred to her that her attire was misleading. The cloak, the mask – everything pointed to the one explanation the enemy had just come up with.
Quickly, she sent chakra to her fist and punched the puppet in front of her, merely to increase the distance between them, though. Right afterwards, she moved on, but was stopped by three figures jumping off the trees and surrounding her.
The reinforcements.
“So… an ANBU, huh?” One of the men smirked. “All I see is a little boy. At that rate, I think I could’ve become an ANBU as well.”
Laughter from all sides.
Misoka’s mind raced. The number of her enemies had just tripled, making her chances significantly slimmer.
But she couldn’t lose her head now. Everything would be alright. She still believed in that. She hadn’t come so far just to get killed in a war which didn’t even concern her.
At the sight of the men assuming fighting stances, Misoka knew that she had to stall time.
“You really want to attack me?” She disguised her voice so she sounded like a man. Or, well, a boy at least. “You are brave, I’ll give you that.”
Oh dear, oh dear. Keep a cool head. Don’t panic. Trying to take away the seriousness of her situation, she decided to … sing a song in her mind. Yeah, she would do just that and stay perfectly calm.
“How is Seven Bells? I actually wanted to fight him and have some challenge for a change.”
I don’t care! I love it! I DON’T CARE, I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT! I don’t…
Damn it, why did she only remember two lines of the song?!
Misoka hesitantly looked at the men around her. Needless to say, they were still prepared to fight – with the sole difference that her words had made them break out into laughter again.
Well… this was war, right? And those men belonged to the hostile forces, which meant there had to be some… friendly forces as well.
Okay. Good. Why not just try her luck, then?
“UM, HELLO! THREE SEVEN BELLS SHINOBIS! REINFORCEMENTS, PLEASE!”
At once, her enemies’ laughter turned into grim expressions. This time, they didn’t hesitate to launch an attack.
