"Mom, why does it snow?"

It was as though the more people she got to know, the lonelier she felt. Conversations that she felt like empty words, time spent together only seemed as though moments of her life were being drained away. Everything felt insignificant, like nothing mattered.

It was snowing again. Beautiful, intricate, silvery white snowflakes drifted from the heavens above, their origins hidden by the veil of mist that hung over the land. The temperature had decreased past it's normal chill, and even the active animals which had long since gotten used to the lower temperatures of Mizu no Kuni had gone quiet, only the occasional crowing of birds could be heard. Soft crunches were audible to keen ears as the magenta-haired woman walked through the dense forest, black boots compacting the snow on the ground with every step that she took, leaving visible footprints that would be covered within moments by the heavy snowfall. Her pace was slow, a leisurely pace that seemed unaffected by the white coat of snow on her head, her hair, and the loose-fitting hoodie that she wore, the bright pink of her top almost enough to contrast against the pure white around her, but not quite, the snowfall and mist increasing with every step she took. She was headed towards the lake, the place rumoured to be where all the mist originated from, where all the greatest Kiri nin had once trained at, where their greatest source of water outside of the oceans was located. To anyone else, it may have seemed strange that she was headed towards such a place in what appeared to be the middle of a snowstorm, but that didn't matter to an Aisu.

That wasn't to say she was entirely immune to the cold. That wasn't it at all - she could still feel a slight chill, but not as much as the normal human. Freezing temperatures were cold. Cold temperatures were cool. Cool temperatures were normal. And if it got unbearably hot … well, she wasn't sure what she'd be then. Dead, probably. It was common knowledge that Aisu clan members were weaker in high temperature environments, places such as desert filled Kaze no Kuni was the worst place an Aisu could be in. The cold now was biting at her exposed skin, giving her normally pale cheeks a tinge of pink, but apart from that, she strolled through the quiet land as though it were any other day. But the snow itself brought down a whip on her already damp mood. It was nearing the anniversary of the day she nearly died. The night when she had accidentally locked out of the comforts of her own home in the dead of winter, suffering from severe hypothermia. It had only been the Aisu blood that ran through her veins that contributed to her miraculous recovery, but by then everything had been too late, and everything changed.

We'll be back in an hour, I promise.

Ha. Promises. That promise still haunted her memories. At first, it had been something she deliberately repeated to herself in hopes that it would somehow, someday come true. That they would come back, despite the fact that the hour, days, weeks, years had passed since that promise. But that was just a simply child's longing and fantasy, and slowly, it became a line that she tried desperately to block out, words that had become a sinister form that haunted her. And as she grew older, as she began to even forget the faces of her parents, it seemed to work … most of the time. On days like these, when the snowfall was strongest, the wind harsh, she was rendered unable to stop the flood of unwanted memories, which overflowed and spilled from the dark recesses in the back of her mind. Snow, the cold, ice … they made up for the best and the worst of her memories. They were what made up her existence, her life, and everything related to her. She couldn't live with it, but it had nearly caused her death. How terribly ironic.

---

Breathing out in a long, extended breath, she watched in mild entertainment as her breath - made visible by the cold - swirled in front of her face, eventually disappearing as it got lost within the mist. At this point, she could barely see in front of her face, but she knew the lake would be coming up soon, having visited several times before. The pool was a relatively great place to train at, but there was only so much one could do in a controlled environment without pissing off the regular citizens who frequented the pool to relax.

She needed more space, more water. It was about time she increased her abilities and upped the amount of effort she placed in training. In the several situations she had been in for the past few days, it had become apparent that she wasn't at the level that she needed to be. Being a chuunin meant more independence, expected to be much more proficient at completing missions and defending their village, a level of which she was just barely at. It wasn't enough for her, and she had come to the realization that if she didn't train more, those who had started after her would ascend to higher ranks before she did. And her competitive spirit and pride  wouldn't allow for that to occur. The sudden sharp decrease in temperature alerted her that she was now standing right at the edge of the lake, and without stopping, she activated her Supernatural Walking technique, continuing on to walk right on the water, not stopping until she was at least 10 meters in, eventually turning on the spot to face the shore. There was a thin layer of ice on the surface of the water already, but she wasn't planning on using any hyouton until she was sick of training suiton. The ice wasn't thick enough to bear her weight if she wasn't using channelling chakra to her feet, so she allowed the technique to be active, knowing that it only drained a tiny bit of chakra. Even if she was tolerant to cold, dropping herself into ice cold water wasn't something she was willing to try. The risk was much too high, the consequences much too severe. To get herself sick or injured now of all times would be ridiculous, especially if it was a result of stupidity on her part.

The ice wasn't going to last long anyways. She intended on accessing the water below the ice, and thus would require breaking said ice. As much as she loved her hyouton techniques, she knew that solely focusing on one element would be her downfall. Her spar with Dameon - who had been raiton-based - made that quite obvious. The way his basic raiton technique had managed to destroy her ice mirror was a sign that something needed to be done to retaliate should she end up fighting against an opponent with a much greater advantage in another element. If she wanted to counter all her weaknesses, bringing up the level of her suiton and fuuton would be necessary. And after all … a kekkei tota wouldn't exist without its base elements. She would be an idiot to ignore the two elements that made up the foundation of her ice element.

"Right then … so what exactly am I doing? She muttered to herself, tapping her foot against the ice as though testing its potential. She knew she wanted to do something long-ranged with the water, but now it was a matter of determining what she wanted to do. Perhaps … Her mind wandered to a technique that she had seen once when passing by the training grounds, of a long dragon made entirely out of water, which had struck at the opponent with enough force to knock them to the ground and likely create intense bruising. That was an interesting technique … now that question was whether she was able to replicate it. Guess I'll never know till I try.

She never was one to be afraid to try new things. Curiosity -  succumbing to her ever-questioning mind - had been something she was born with, or so it seemed. Along with her apparent lack of fear for the unknown, this made her headstrong, impulsive, and prone to rush into things … but overlooking such flaws, it also helped to increase her chances of improvement in all areas. There were always pros and cons to things, and so far, she had yet to rush herself into a fatal, unrecoverable situation, and so a fear of the unknown had yet to develop. People were not born with fears, they developed them - that was what Keiko herself believed. And it was with this belief in mind that she found herself always willing to attempt new things, even dangerous tasks at that. Her adopted parents, being the non-shinobi citizens that they were, always seemed more than just a little concerned for her well being. They were busy people, not always present to see every moment of Keiko's life, but what they did see often ended up with them grilling her about her decision to be a kunoichi. What normal girl would jump off the roof of their mansion-like home instead of using the front door? Or whose preferred method of travel is at least four feet in the air on a thin sheet of ice instead of simply walking like everyone else?

But what she was about to attempt shouldn't be at all difficult or even in the least bit dangerous. Or so she hoped. Plunging into ice cold water didn't sound quite so appealing, she would have to pay extra attention to ensure she didn't lose focus on her Supernatural Walking technique. If the ice cracked - and it would, seeing as she required the use of the water below - she would still be standing atop of the water, but the process of the ice cracking could potentially result in a loss of balance. Right … so concentrate, and I'll be fine. Lose my concentration, and I get an ice bath. Sounds fun.. Closing her eyes, she took in a deep breath before opening them again, a light of determination shining in the lilac hues of her irises. Willing the water below her to rise, a muffled rumbling could be hear, the protests of the ice as the water pushed against the barrier that it in place. It took much more effort and chakra than she had realized. The immense amount of water she was summoning nearly took her breath away, but then … the ice cracked. A shattering sound filled the air and everything seemed to fall still in that moment, frozen in time. A large jet of water erupted from under her feet, only a meter in front of her, the surrounding ice breaking apart, cracks spreading across the entirety of the frozen lake.

There was a cool wetness that caressed her feet, alerting her that she was now standing on the water, the ice she had once been standing on completely removed from existence. But apart from noticing this detail, she paid no extra attention to it, instead focused on the collection of water floating before her. Eyes narrowed in concentration, she began moulding it into the shape that she had once seen it as; a dragon head rapidly becoming visible, already moving forward towards the shore, jaws opened intimidatingly wide, exposing sharp teeth that - unbeknownst to the opponent - wouldn't do much damage at all. Powerful ripples flowed down the dragon's long, snake-like body, streamlined against the air that it travelled in, allowing it to pick up speed as it moved. And they said dragons were rare to the point of not existing. She found herself scoffing in her head, eyes trained on the dragon before it. She knew it didn't really exist, merely a form that she had created with her suiton chakra, but that didn't make it any less real in that very moment. She had seen pictures, books, drawings of different dragons, of strange lizard ones with a large torso, great hind legs and massive wings, of long serpentine ones with smaller legs, no apparent wings, yet fluid in flight. Her dragon resembled the latter more so than the former, taking the form of ancient dragons of traditional myths and legends. And it was breath-taking. She had seen this same dragon on festival lanterns, on pretty yukatas, or the sides of ancient buildings that once belonged to great warriors.

The point of the dragon wasn't to deal flesh wounds at all, but rather cause immense bruising, the water-formed mythical serpent slamming into an opponent or obstacle with great speed. It had enough force to send someone flying, leaving them too injured and out of breath to react immediately, and creating an opening for her to follow it up with another attack. Keiko found herself admiring the dragon as it moved, long elegant body swaying from side to side as it propelled itself forward, small droplets of ice cold water splashing against lightly against her already pink-tinged face as they flew off its body, pushed back by the air currents being disturbed as the dragon moved. Its belly glided against the top of the water, pushing away any remaining ice and gathering up water so that its size never seemed to decrease, even as it began moving further away from her. It seemed as though the farther it went, the faster it's speed increased. Within a blink of an eye, it had nearly reached the shore, heading straight towards a nearby tree. The edges of her mouth curved upwards ever so slightly, the hint of a smile forming in expectation as she willed the water dragon to proceed right into the tree, completely absorbed in the destruction that she knew would come. And it did come. The sound was unlike anything she had imagined. It wasn't the harmless splashing of water against a solid surface, nor the explosive reaction of something combusting. The sound was indescribable in words, but the visual damage was obvious enough to show the extent of the dragon's power. The tree - not a big old oak that stood for hundreds of years - was nearly full grown, not a young sapling, but having at least thirty years of age. But yet it was nearly entirely destroyed, the top, less-sturdy part had snapped clean off, without enough moisture within to hold it in place. The remaining trunk was still present, but with wood splinters bent inwards, away from the collision direction of the dragon.

By now the dragon had fully dissipated, but Keiko still felt a rush of exhilaration, momentarily caught off guard by the sight she had just witnessed. Beautiful … Almost as perfect as her ice creations. But she could definitely feel the drain on her chakra, knowing that if she used this without a pre-existing source of water, it would likely require even more effort. But since I am standing right on a lake … Might as well try everything else. Tilting her head, she ran another eye over the damage that she had created. It was approximately twelve meters away, and she was certain the dragon wouldn't have lasted any further than an additional three meters away. Even upon passing the ten meter mark, she had already felt herself losing control of the dragon, no longer able to change its direction. So that would be the limited to that. Another flaw would be the sheer size of the technique … anyone fast enough to dodge it would easily leap out of the way and be done with that, no longer having to worry about being hit. She needed something less avoidable, even if it caused less damage. Something like her Ice Senbon Needles, but in greater quantity. The senbon had proved somewhat useful in previous situations, but more of a supplementary distraction technique than something she would use offensively to cause damage. Perhaps something with water … flying water needles? The idea was intriguing, and it wouldn't hurt to try. She definitely had an abundance of water to test out suiton techniques with.

It was funny how needles were the first thing that came to mind as an offensive technique. Senbon – traditional senbon – were long, thin metal needles, used for a large variety of purposes, ranging from simple acupuncture to deadly offensive techniques. The fact that both ends were sharpened into pointed edges made it differ significantly from regular sewing needles, delicate points piercing easily through flesh, to the extent where the feeling of pain would be delayed for several moments.

As a medical ninjutsu user, she was not at all unfamiliar with the many uses of senbon needles, though it was apparently that her knowledge of its offensive usages were far greater than that of its more supplementary, healing properties. She didn’t bother limiting herself with regular senbon – those she carried with her, but rarely used. Her ice senbon often proved sufficient enough, nearly exact senbon replicas made purely out of hyōton chakra, with their white-blue color indicating that they weren’t simply fashioned out of metal. But that technique only allowed her a maximum of five senbon, hardly the vast number she would need to truly deal severe damage to an opponent. So far, she had only used it as more of a scare or distraction tactic, throwing off her opponents to buy herself some time for other follow-up actions, but not necessarily with the actual intention of inflicting serious damage, knowing that it wouldn’t do much more than piercing an inch or two.  And with the increasing amount of raiton users … her ice senbon just wouldn’t be able to cut it, given that contact with any form of raiton would cause it to disperse immediately. She required something more useful, more dangerous.

One hand slipping into the front pouch of her hoodie, she withdrew it to reveal a pack of senbon that she had purchased recently, unraveling the cloth that held the tiny ninja tools. Slipping a single senbon out, she twirled it expertly in one hand, admiring its tiny form in the sliver of light offered by the moon. It was dark out, but the light that glinted off the metal was enough for her to make out it's shape. So if I could somehow use suiton to maintain a similar shape … It would be much more difficult, that was for sure. Ice itself was a relatively solid form – it was known as the solid state of water, after all. Shaping it into senbon had been simple enough, her kekkei genkai and natural affinity for the hyōton element made it so, and the art of forming various shapes with ice crystals came with ease. Water was admittedly even easier to mould, but it was ensuring that it maintained its shape that would prove to be a challenge. Should the water fall out of shape before the suiton senbon hit its target, then it would only result in harming water droplets travelling a fast speeds … something she wasn't willing to risk chakra for in a fight. That meant she would need to perfect it today.

Taking a deep breath, she first concentrated on drawing a small amount of water in front of her, the small globe rising from the lake to hover in front of her. Slender eyebrows dipping in concentration, she willed it to form the shape that she wanted, the image of a senbon still fresh in her mind. And within moments, the small globe of water had separated into three small senbon, in perfect shape and looking as lethal as the ones she had in her hand. Simple enough … now how many do I want? With an existing supply of water, making hundreds wouldn't be at all difficult. The ice senbon she had already mastered barely drained her chakra in any way, the technique itself only about a step higher than the basic techniques taught at the Academy. A hundred? Five hundred? No … she wanted to challenge herself. Push herself past the limits. And if she always remained within her own comfort zone, then progress would be nonexistent. A thousand. Something about the solid number sounded right, significant. It was a little risky to experiment while standing in the middle of a freezing lake, but at this point, she was intent on achieving her goal.

Letting the three water senbon drop back into the lake, she took a moment to relax, each slow, steady breath dancing past her lips in a spiral of nearly visible air as the warm breath was introduced to the frigid air. If she truly managed this, then her next step would be to head home and rest. As simple as that. The prospect of sleep worked as a positive incentive, and before long, she decided it was time. Letting out one last long breath, she let herself feel the chakra spiralling out of her body, drawing water from the environment around her. It wasn't just the lake that the water was being drawn from, which was reassuring. That would mean this technique would be effective even if she didn't have a large supply of water nearby. The water was drawn upwards so that it hovered in the air, slowly separating to form individual senbon. She wasn't quite sure how she knew the amount was right, but after a moment, something told her that it was ready. That a thousand senbon created purely out of chakra-enhanced water floated above her, waiting for her command to send them flying. So … I suppose I should just target another poor tree. Eyeing another that stood at the edge, she directed the senbon towards it, jumping back as she did so, landing lightly two meters back on the water, eyes never leaving the tree.

She willed the senbon to encircle the tree, yet realized she had left on the top open - something that she took careful note of. If she dispersed the senbon to cover the top as well, it would decrease the effectiveness of the entire attack. Leaving the top open meant that her opponent could still escape … but anyone with enough speed to make it out of the tiny opening at the top would likely be strong enough to withstand the senbon attack anyways. It would have to do for now. The senbon closed in, piercing the tree at multiple angles. Not all senbon managed to hit the tree, but the majority did, and that was enough to satisfy her. Letting out the breath she didn't realized she had been holding, she headed towards the shore, walked towards the tree. Careful not to step on any of the senbon, she circled around the tree, inspecting the damage. Looks good enough to me, I suppose. It would be nice if it could pierce deeper … but with the number I'm creating, it would still draw enough blood to be lethal. And with that, she was satisfied.

It was time to head home, to await new orders as the war progressed on. Her brief training session alone at the lake had been nothing short of satisfactory, yielding results that she couldn't help but smile at. She would be ready for the next round of attack. The thought of being able to use her new techniques on the enemy that had decided to attack her village was thrilling, and she was eager to actually be back on the battlefield. Her senbon may not be effective against those forsaken wooden puppets, but her water dragon was another matter. That would definitely prove useful. Starting back towards the village, she quickened her pace, knowing that she would require at least a couple hours of sleep to replenish her chakra.

I wonder … will my next mission involve comrades? People I know? Part of her hoped so. While she didn't quite get along with some of the people she had been paired with for missions, it was still nice to know that a fellow shinobi had her back. Even if she believed her own skills were improving, fighting in a war alone, surrounded by the enemy, was terrifying. Not that she would ever admit it out loud, but it was true. Only a fool - or an extremely powerful shinobi - would think of heading into a large fight with unknown enemies alone. Before long, she arrived at her house. Slipping through the back door, she headed up to her room, careful not to wake up her parents. There was no reason to give the more worries, even if she had only been out to train.
