Chikara Kenji has been reported being seen travelling outside of the village without official leave. In fact he is not the only one of our shinobi guilty of doing so lately. Another boy, Aulden I believe his name is, has also left the village without first obtaining permission from our administration. He however, is a fairly young and low ranked shinobi, making him a low priority objective. Chikara Kenji, on the other hand, is a newly admitted member of our ANBU corps, as I’m sure you are already more than aware of. Our intelligence has them headed towards Kirigakure. For what reason? We do not know, but their absence is unacceptable. You are to track them, find out exactly what they were doing, and bring them back. As with any mission, you have permission to kill should the need arise, but given that there is no motive or suspicion of treason, it is this administration’s preference that both of them be brought back alive and in reasonable health. Given your history with Kenji we were advised to emphasize that preference. Even so, you are perhaps the most qualified to take him down if this absence without official leave turns out to be more than just a misstep.
“God damn it Kenji,” Bokuden lamented to himself as stared over the expanse of water that laid before him, “This is a whole new level of idiocy, even for you. If you’ve gotten yourself into something stupid that I need to come and clean up I am going to kill you.” His head would turn as he allowed his eyes to dart back and forth across the ship on which he stood. The shadow cast over his face by his pulled-over hood shielded his crystal blue eyes from the harsh noon sun as he scanned the hustling and bustling on the vessel around him.
It was hardly what one would call the most luxurious of travel accommodations; an old transport ship that was made to transport light cargo. From the craftsmanship of the stern and bowspirit, it was obvious that the ship had once been used for less arduous work. A personal travel ship or a military officer’s vessel perhaps. It was uncommon to see a galley like this used for cargo transport, but it was obvious that the ship had seen better days. It was a bit different than the travel style he had become accustomed to in his life, mostly due to him being born into money, but all the same it was more appropriate for the situation.
This was an ANBU mission, as far as the ship’s crew had to know he didn’t exist. He paid them their fee to allow him passage and as soon as they reached port he would disappear, no questions asked. Not only did these sailors have the look of men with questionable morals and intentions themselves, but the appearance of their ship and the manner of their work would arouse next to no suspicion. The fact that they were all too likely to avoid any unnecessary meetings with the authorities only made his life easier. There was nowhere for Bokuden to slip off to in the middle of the ocean, but once they had reached the island chains of Mizu no Kuni it would be child’s play to simply move around undetected as he pleased.
Bokuden intended to be in and out of the land of water with the utmost haste. With the knowledge he had of Kenji’s electrical signature finding him should have been a simple task as long as the information he was given was correct. With any luck he could get back to port in time to hitch a ride back to the mainland with the same crew. All that was left to do now was to wait… for as long as it took for the green sanctuary of land to appear on the horizon, and then get to work.
