From his position atop the surface of the lake Bokuden could sense the submerged Miho halt her descent into the water. Curiously, her first action was not to immediately resurface and come up for air, but rather to stay submerged. Bokuden raised an eyebrow as he threw a quick glance down to the water below his feet, wondering what Miho could be planning that required her to remain underwater for longer than she needed to. Not that it really mattered though, whatever it was Bokuden would be made aware of it soon enough. She would not be able to get anywhere near him without her presence being revealed by his kkg and besides, shinobi or not unless she magically sprouted gills she would have to come up for air eventually.
“Let’s see how these two will fare when fighting one man down,” Bokuden thought to himself as he turned his attention back to his other two students, who now seemed to be making their moves.
“It looks like someone is finally ready to participate,” Bokuden thought to himself as watched Miyako dart towards his left after the stunt he pulled with Miho. She held her katana close to her body and gripped it with both hands as she seemed to skate across the surface of the water towards Bokuden. An amused smirk pulled on Bokuden’s lips as he witnessed what seemed to be his students deciding to launch yet another head on attack against him without taking advantage of their numbers,
“I guess they still haven’t learned their lesson yet.” Before Bokuden could make his move in response to Miyako’s charge he threw a glance from the corner of his eye in the direction of the only student who wasn’t accounted for already, Masayo.
“Well, she’s certainly not afraid to get right into the thick of things,” he mused in his own mind as he took note of Masayo once again charging at him, this time from the opposite side from where Miyako was dashing towards,
“Although I’m not exactly sure whether I’m ready to deem it courage or foolishness just yet.” Bokuden allowed them to close the gap between them a bit, remaining motionless until Masayo was within 10m of him (which he could tell by her body’s unique electrical signature becoming illuminated within his Current Perception: Passive Range) when she began preparing some manner of jutsu. Bokuden turned his attention away from the charging Miyako, confident that she was no real threat to him in close combat even if she did strike with intent to kill, in order to get a better look at the hand signs that Masayo was waving. A grin appeared on his face as he realized that she was preparing a Storm release jutsu, an idea that delighted Bokuden quite a bit. Despite the Yamamoto clan’s renown within the village Bokuden had never gotten a chance to experience combat against a member of the clan first hand and although he was fighting on anything but equal grounds with Masayo he intended to analyze and learn a great deal about her clan’s advanced element through this training. Bokuden watched intently, examining each and every hand sign she made, recognizing the various raiton and suiton affiliated signs intertwine to create a sequence that was foreign to him. Even the chakra build up was foreign to him, but that should be expected from an advanced nature kekkei genkai. He could easily sense the raiton buildup, but it seemed to only be a part of the jutsu, the other nature being out of the jurisdiction of his sensory ability. If it weren’t for the fact that he knew she was a storm release user beforehand, he would not have been able to identify the second element being molded into her jutsu. Even so, the fact that her storm release necessitated the utilization of raiton chakra all but assured his ability to sense and react to its molding and release.
His eyes never leaving Masayo’s hands as he studied her use of her storm release jutsu, Bokuden made a mental note of where Miho and Miyako were with his sensory ability. He couldn’t just forget about them now, could he? Miyako was closing in fast and Bokuden knew that he would have to deal with her soon, as apparently she had no intention of allowing him to study Miho’s storm release in peace. Likewise, Miho had finally reemerged from the water and had seemingly decided that it was time for her to enter the fray of her own volition. Bokuden couldn’t help but smirk as his little display earlier had gotten the message across clearer than even he had expected. He was now being attacked from practically all sides, with Miho, Miyako, and Masayo and her storm release senbons closed in on his location. Could he get out of this situation? Of course. Rather easily in fact, but that wasn’t the only problem he had to worry about. He could have easily leapt out of the way of the staggered senbon, avoiding them entirely, but that would endanger Miyako and Miho, whether they knew it or not. If he waited until the last minute to jump out of the way the girls would likely run right into the ranton jutsu that was meant for him before they even had a chance to react to the situation they would have found themselves in. This may have been shinobi training, but he didn’t want to have to carry anyone to the hospital after a training session, at least not this early in their squad’s career. Bokuden let out a sigh as he felt annoyed by the sense of responsibility for the girls’ safety that he was feeling before weaving a sequence of hand signs himself. In what may have appeared as just another blur to the group of genin Bokuden darted towards Masayo, zig sagging out of the way of her ranton senbon as he approached her, but not before leaving two water clones behind underwater to deal with his remaining two students.
Knowing that the inaccuracy of Masayo’s senbon would cause some of them to veer a bit off path and fly towards her squad mates Bokuden created the two water clones in order to cover for them. But he would let them sweat a bit first, waiting until just before the girls would collide with the ranton senbon to have his clones emerge from the water and rescue them from harm’s way. The water clone that was designated to get Miyako out of the way did so with ease, throwing her over his shoulder and carrying her that way out of the path of Masayo’s stray jutsu
“You’re being dangerously chatty today, aren’t you?” the clone said to Miyako, clearly referring to her surrendering information regarding their clan’s ability despite it being forbidden. The water clone that was meant to take care of Miho had a slightly more difficult job as Miho had apparently made a clone from behind the original Bokuden’s back, requiring him to identify the real Miho. This was of course simple underwater as he need only look up to see that only one of the two Mihos was causing a disruption on the surface of the water with her footsteps, a dead giveaway. Once the real Miho had been identified the clone would spring up from the water, sweeping her off of her feet and carrying her in that manner to where the other clone would have carried Miyako.
“You really need to stop leaving yourself so open for me,” the clone said to Miho sarcastically. Once both of them were securely out of harm’s way Bokuden released his clones, causing them to revert back to water and allowing Miyako and Miho to splash into the lake in the process.
The real Bokuden had made is way over to the charging Masayo, stopping right in front of her and using the sheath of his sword to slam into the guard of her rapier, causing it to dive tip first down towards the water while he used his sheathed sword to sweep at behind Masayo’s legs in an attempt to trip her and force her to splash into the water as well. Regardless of how things turned out Bokuden was sure of one thing, there was a lesson to be learned from that little engagement. He assumed that he wouldn’t need to explain what was wrong with their previous attack. There was a difference between coordinated strikes and rushing in carelessly. Masayo’s jutsu put her squad mates’ safety in jeopardy due to its wildness. At the same time she might not have been forced into using her jutsu so thoughtlessly if her squad mates had not charged in so recklessly without taking her jutsu into consideration. Overall their first attempt at teamwork was resoundingly uninspiring, but it was a minor issue. Team work and coordinated attacks could be taught. What Bokuden really wanted to measure was not the strength of their teamwork or shinobi skills, but the strength of their character. How they respond to their first failure would be an important example of behavior for Bokuden to observe. Failure was said to build character after all.
“Well then,” Bokuden addressed his squad in a serious tone,
“Are you all ready to actually begin this match or do you still need another warm up round?”
Suiton S>SS: 4690/9000
- Chakra: 212/300:
Name: Water Clone Jutsu
Canon/Custom: Canon
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Element: Suiton
Range: Clones can not travel further than 30m from the user.
Specialty: Ninjutsu
Duration: Until clones are destroyed or cancelled
Cooldown: 4 posts, +1 post for every clone created past one.
Description: The Water Clone Jutsu is similar to the Shadow Clone Jutsu except it creates clones out of water that have one-tenth of the original person's chakra. Like other solid clone techniques, the clones can be used to perform tasks the user is unable or unwilling to do for themselves. The range of the clone is limited however, as it can not travel very far from the original body without losing control. Like other clone techniques, if the water clones are injured enough they will revert back to normal water. Water clones are capable of only using suiton jutsu provided they have enough chakra to cast it. A Maximum of six clones may be created at any one time. The clone automatically disperses when it runs out of chakra, or when hit by any attack that can cause a noteworthy level of physical damage [second/third degree burns, broken bones, stab wounds, etc] or a C rank offensive jutsu/ 2 D rank.
