Gin lingered between a state of conciousness and unconciouness. She lost her sense of time almost entirely. She didn't quite understand what was going on. All she could feel was searing pain in her back, her limbs and her abdomen. She felt blood dripping from her wounds, though she could make little sense of them. She didn't quite remember what had happened. She was much too exhausted to try to recall the events of the mission. All she could hear was Trilby telling her to stay with him. She could barely feel his arms holding her to him as she carried her towards Sunagakure's hospital. She was cold. Shivers ran up and down her spine as she trembled slightly. She knew what this feeling was. She had been near death several times throughout her life. She couldn't let herself close her eyes, she couldn't let herself rest. Gin knew that she would die if she did so. And what a pathetic death that would be, at the hands of a lowly scum. Her pride wouldn't let her die. She kept herself focused on keeping herself breathing. Her breths were short and shallow. She felt dizzy, mosly because of the bloodloss and the fever. She saw bits and pieces of everything around her - Trilby's face holding such a desperate and frustrated expression, the view of the night's sky as he held her in his arms.

At one point or another, that turned into the ceiling of Sunagakure's hospital. Gin couldn't help but groan. She had been there so many times lately that it would be difficult not to recognize the place with its bear walls and chilling atmosphere. She was hauled towards the emergency room. She noticed that Trilby refused to leave her side. He held her hand tightly and refused to let go. So stubborn... and yet Gin couldn't help but smile slightly. The medics went to work on her injuries instantly. They began by trying to stop the bleeding coming from her major wounds. After that, they would begin tending to her fever and her infection. Gin was slowly regaining her strength. All would have likely gone well, had a messenger not burst through the doors during the operation. Some of the medics tried to kick the pink haired woman out of the room, but he claimed to have urgent news for the Kazekage. They tried to explain that her that Gin wouldn't understand, nor would she be able to do anything at the time. Yet she insisted on delivering the message and did so in only one sentence. "Sake Uisuki is dead," She said, her voice chiming through the room. She turned around and left with a soft smile on her face.

Whatever hope Gin had that her children would live shattered. She felt her stomach sink. She felt sick. She felt her insides twist into intricate knots to the point where it was beyond painful. And like that, it happened. She felt blood tricling down her thighs in a slow and steady flow. She had... She had lost her children. No, no, no, no, no, no, no! This couldn't be happening. It had to be a lie. It had to be! Gin let out a loud screech that tore through the entire hospital wing. Her heart rate accelerated, she began thrashing, trying to gt out of the medics' grasps. They pulled her down and kept her weak form in place. Gin still tried to struggle, though she didn't know what for. She had lost them all in a single day. She had failed. Those were the last thoughts that ran through her head as the medics put her to sleep once more. She would wake up a day later, but she wouldn't say a word. She would stare blankly at her surroundings without moving. She would refuse any food or drink. The nurses had to tie her down to make sure that they could feed her through the IV.

Day Four...

Trilby's head rolled off his shoulder, dropping to the desk with a thud. His eyes slowly opened, and he looked around with a groan. It was bright in the room, morning? He turned to face the blinds to his left. Yep, morning. He had set up a small desk in the corner of Gin's hospital room. It was covered in notepads and books. Gin hadn't spoken a word to him since he had dragged her here. He had been so god damn scared. He thought she was going to die. But it was like she had. Her lover was dead, she had miscarried and she hadn't spoken a word since she woke up. It was like she was dead on the inside. It was his fault, too. If he hadn't dragged her out on that mission he'd be fine, but he had to force her to come. He hadn't even found the time to reflect on his own problems. He'd killed his own father, and freed his people. Yet he couldn't stop thinking about Gin for more than a few seconds.

Let fame, that all hunt after in their lives,
Live register'd upon our brazen tombs
And then grace us in the disgrace of death;
When, spite of cormorant devouring Time,
The endeavour of this present breath may buy
That honour which shall bate his scythe's keen edge,
And make us heirs of all eternity."

Trilby sighed, slamming the book shut. It was all he could do to keep himself sane. He had been reading aloud to Gin every day, it was all he could do to keep himself from snapping. "Gin...I..." he sighed, stopping his thought. Trilby felt like he had to apologise, but he couldn't force out the words. It was his fault. His mission, his problem, His guard that dropped, it was all his fault...

Day Nine...

Trilby shut the book softly, leaning back with a sigh. He had just finished reading aloud another basic Fuuinjutsu book. Fuuinjutsu Fundamentals Volume two. Basic crap he could recite from memory. Still, he hoped it might spark a reaction from Gin. Nothing. She was still catatonic. She hadn't spoken a word. She hadn't even looked at him. She probably hated him. Why wouldn't she? It was his fault. He'd killed her babies. He'd almost killed her. His fault.

Day Seventeen...

"How well he's read, to reason against reading! Th-" the door of the room was slowly pushed open. "Excuse me, I have a package for a... Trilby?" a short, portly man entered slowly, holding a long rectangle box. "Over here." Trilby called out, waving to the man. He quickly approached, stepping over piles of books and other various trinkets. Trilby had established quite a rabbit warren in his time camping in Gin's room. He had refused to leave once. He took the box from the man, and gestured casually towards the door. He rapidly left, shutting the door behind him. Tearing open the package, Trilby withdrew his prize. He had made an order a few days ago, and it had finally arrived.

He removed a sword from the box, looking it up and down. It was exactly as he had ordered it. A blood red sheath, black hilt with a sakura blossom pattern underneath. The tsuba was accurate, as was the engraving. He pulled the blade slowly from the sheath, and gave it a quick swing. It left a light green trail behind itself as it cut through the air. Perfect. Even the enchantment he had requested was in place. Sheathing the blade, he dragged himself from his desk and approached Gin's bed. As he walked, he held the blade by it's Sheath, forming a quick few hand seals before tapping the hilt. Perfect. Now it would have the Hogosha Tsuka seal, assuming she had the will to grasp it. "Gin. I, uh, bought you this." he said awkwardly, holding out the blade, still being careful to avoid touching the un-calibrated handle of the sword. He wasn't sure if this would get a reaction from her or not, but it was his last hope. She had been catatonic for so long, all he wanted to do was see her smile again.

The only reason why Gin slept was because of the sedatives that they fed her on a daily basis. The only reason why she ate was because they forced her to ingest food through the IV buried in her arm. The only reason why she had yet to try to end her own life was because of she lacked the energy to find the mans to do so. In short, the only reason why Gin remained alive was because others made it so. But in truth, she was empty inside. She was only a shell of what she used to be a few days ago. It was an odd thing, really, how people could bev reduced to nothing in a matter of a few hours. Then again, Gin hardly gave that much thought. She didn't care about anything or anyone around her, or at least that was what she told herself to keep the pain at bay. She didn't want to go through something like that ever again; such an overwhelming amount of pain. She felt numb, both due to the pain and her unwillingless to think or move. All she had done since she had woken up was sit up in her bed and stare blankly at her own hands, which rested on her thighs.

Gin had lost her sense of time. The days melded together, so much so that she was unable to tell apart when one began and the other finished. Every once in a while, she would hear Trilby reading to her, speaking to her. But most of the time she was too zoned out to notice his presence. She couldn't quite tell that he had been there every single day. She had missed most of the times that the nurses tried to make him leave. Whenever they did try, it usually turned to yelling and screaming. Gin didn't even turn around to look. She stayed silent and still. However, she did wonder why Trilby was even there to begin with. Did he blame hiself for Gin's current state? Was this because of some sense of debt or some feeling of guilt or pity? Maybe it was a mixture of all of those things. It was futile.

Trilby's presence didn't really fix anything, did it? Of course, it wasn't that Gin blamed him for anything. In fact, she kne wthat she could only blame herself. He had never forced her or pressured her into taking the decissions that she had made. Gin had gone on the mission out of her own free will, her own stubborness. She had driven herself to this. He had nothing to feel sorry about, nothing to feel guilty over. Of course, Gin wouldn't say as much. It was as if she had forgotten how to speak altogether. Her mother would drop by every once in a while. She would look at her daughter and sigh. She would have a couple of conversations with Trilby before she left once again. And as with every other visitor that stop by, Gin hardly noticed the fact that she was there. Chie and Reiko hardly understood what was wrong with their mother, they thought that they had maybe done something to upset Gin.

It wasn't until after seventeen days of beeing bedridden and hopeless that Trilby managed to get some sort of reaction out of her. He placed a blade in the open palms of her hands. Gin stared at it blankly for a moment, as if she didn't even recognize what the object was. Trilby had had a sword comissioned for her as a gift. Gin finally moved, closing her palms around the sword. The movement was simple, hardly anything that could be considered difficult to do. But she had moved. She had reacted to something. "Thank you," She said, her tone dry and almost emotionless. But there was a trace of affection and gratitude in what she said. Again, her words weren't much, but they were something.

Her hand moved slightly, wrapping around the hilt. Her lips opened slightly, as her eyes wandered along the blade. "Thank you" she whispered, no emotion in her words. Seventeen days, and finally, Gin had spoken! Trilby let go of the sheath, allowing Gin to hold the weight of the blade in her hands. He sat softly on the end of the bed, trying not to make a big deal out of her words. Still, he wanted to grin. He had finally got a reaction from her! "The blade, it responds to your chakra. Leaves a slight trail behind it in the colour of your chakra." Trilby hoped explaining what the blade could do would get her a bit more excited about the blade, perhaps drag a bit more life out of her.

He sat there for a few seconds after saying this, staring at his hands. The gloves he normally wore weren't present, and he could clearly see the Ouroboros tattoo on his hand. His guilt was overflowing. Gin was so vibrant and lively, and now she was catatonic. Even now, she had finally spoken, yet it sounded so dead inside. "Gin...I...I'm sorry I failed you. I let you get hurt. I'm so sorry..." he sighed, clenching his fists. He couldn't bring himself to look at her, he was too ashamed. "I will never let you get hurt like that again. Never."

Gin kept on staring at the blade in her hands. Her expression was still blank and void. But there was something slightly different about her, like she was very slowly and steadily coming out of her current state. She would begin to improve, though it would take at least a month to get back to her usual self. Even then she would still feel somewhat broken and hopeless at times. It was only natural. A loss of that level is difficult to get over. Only time can heal such wounds. Gin remained in silence for a moment after Trilby had spoken. "It's... not your fault," She finally managed to say. Her voice sounded strained, as if that mere sentence had taken a lot of effort to utter. That was the best that she could do for now. She wouldn't speak again that day, but as the days progressed, she would slowly begin to have conversations with Trilby.

Day Twenty Three...

Gin had picked up one of Trilby's books. Something short and simple that she could read through without giving it much thought. It took her a while to read through each page, longer than it usually would, but it was a start. She would even lift her gaze every once in a while to look at Trilby, sitting in his desk and going through his own set of books and paperwork. She had yet to smile or show any other expression, but she was slowly moving towards that. She closed the book for a moment and turned to look at him, on the other side of the room. She stared at him for a moment, as if going through her head to find the words that she wanted to say. It surprised her, really, how she had almost forgotten how to formulate a simple question. After about a minute of looking at him blankly, she spoke. "Will you teach me Fuuinjutsu?" She asked.

Trilby signed the report, adding it to the pile on his left. As Gin was incapacitated, Trilby had taken over most of her duties. At the moment, he was finding a way to balance the budget to help support the re-initiation of the slaves to daily life. Most of them were from Suna, but he had been arranging to send the Konoha, Iwa and Kumo travelers home. Thankfully, his grandfather was managing the Konoha portion for him, making his life a lot easi- "Will you teach me Fuuinjutsu?" Trilby froze for a second. Gin was speaking! But, it was an odd request. She had hated Fuuinjutsu before her accident. "Of course I will." he said, sounding slightly giddy. She was slowly recovering. Rising from his desk, he approached the door of the room. "I'll be back soon, we'll need some supplies for this." Trilby opened the door, stepping out of the room for the first time in weeks.

His apartment was slightly dusty, it was clear he hadn't been here in awhile. His armour was hanging from it's stand, still filthy and bloody. He hadn't cleaned it since he finished his mission with Gin, he had refused to leave her room since he moved into it's corner. Gathering up a pile of books, parchment and his encrypted Dark Priest Arts notes, he shoved them all into a rucksack before hurrying off back towards the apartment.

Dropping the rucksack at the foot of Gin's bed, Trilby began to pull out some books and notes. He handed her a small leather bound book. Fuuinjutsu Fundamentals; the art of seal weaving done right. "Here, A book I wrote. Never got around to publishing it, but it's something you'll need to read before I can teach you." Trilby felt a bit nervous, handing her the book. He had written it in a weekend. Sure, it wove his own Fuuinjutsu principles into the basics of the art, but no one had read it. It had some of the secrets to his own dark priest arts in it, and as such he had decided not to make it public. Still, he trusted Gin, and it was better written than anything else he could find.

While he left her to study the book, he arranged his notes. He needed to figure out what he was going to teach her while she read it. Probably generic sealing, it was the perfect basic Fuuinjutsu technique to ensure she'd learned the basics. And considering she was a sword user, it'd come in handy.

Gin noticed that Trilby was happy, that he was excited to teach her Fuuinjutsu. She didn't quite understand why, though. It was hard for her to follow his train of thought. She stared at him as he stepped out of the room, promising to come back shortly. She couldn't quit tell why, but she felt a pang of loss as he left, even though she knew that he would return in a few minutes. She had gotten too used to his presence. He had been the only stable presence in her life for the past month. He had stayed with her, by her side, even though she didn’t understand why. He was slowly pulling her towards sanity, anchoring her to reality. He was the only person she could really count on, wasn't he? The young woman had mixed feelings about that, though. She didn't want to let herself get close to someone like that again. She didn't want to go through that amount of pain, not again. She couldn't bear it.

Gin kept her blank stare fixed on the door to the room. She felt alone, insecure, scared. Did this mean that she would have to depend on his presence from now on? Gin's stomach sank. That was quite unlike her. She had always been independent; she had never had to rely on anyone. She could handle herself. She couldn't let herself be reduced to that humiliation. She was the Kazekage of Sunagakure, a leader of the shinobi world. To depend on someone like that would be pathetic. She clenched her fist slightly, still looking at the door. She felt overwhelmingly relieved when Trilby entered the room once again, so much so that she almost smiled. But of course, her expression remained blank except for a slight hint of happiness in her eyes.

As Trilby handed Gin the book, her hand lingered briefly over his. Her calloused hand - hardened due to her practice of kenjutsu - held his for a moment. Like her, his skin was also beginning to turn rough as well. She looked at him for a moment as she absentmindedly traced the ouroboros scar with the tips of her fingers. She wouldn't really say anything, not for a while. She would just hold his hand in hers, unwilling to let go. But there was a question lingering in her mind. "Why are you doing so much for me?" She asked in a broken whisper. She kept her eyes fixed on his hand, wrapped between her palms. She half expected the answer to have something to do with guilt or debt, not genuine affection. In fact, she would be surprised if he was taking care of her out of something along the lines of love or admiration.

Gin grabbed Trilby's hand, holding him in place. "Why are you doing so much for me?" Trilby froze. He had tried hard to avoid his own feelings during the last month. Did he feel guilty? Of course. But he wouldn't have stayed just for that. He cared about her. A lot. Too much... "I...I have my reasons, dear." he muttered, letting her hold his hand for another few seconds before slowly pulling away. "Skim over that book." he said awkwardly, dragging the topic back to fuuinjutsu. He didn't want to be emotionally vulnerable. Not yet. She might retreat back into her shell. He couldn't have tha-

The door was knocked on once more. "Come in." Trilby barked, frustrated at the interruption. A small, bald man with glasses dangling off his nose charged in. "IT WORKED! BY GOD IT WORKED! I cannot believe you were right!" Trilby was caught off guard by the yelling, grabbing the hilt of Yamato as he turned to face the man before realising who it was. "Professor. I told you, my calculations always work." Trilby's eyes wandered to the package under the man's arm. He had finished Trilby's design? It made sense. One of the primary tasks Trilby had done during his month of logistics was increase the Budget for the R&D department, and together with the professor, had developed his own unique weapon. "The Ryūjin, as promised. I shall leave you to your work now, yes? Let me know how it goes!" he said with a grin, dropping the package at the foot of Gin's bed before trundling off down the hall.

Trilby kicked the door shut, increasing the brightness of the lights in the room. "You're going to want to watch this" He rapidly removed his Jacket, standing barechested before Gin. He turned his back to her for a moment to remove Yamato from his belt, revealing the sheets of thick scars from lashings and beatings. He didn't even realise he had done so, she had never seen them before. Turning back unaware,he tore open the package. He slowly pulled out a shoulder sized skull, with blood red ruby eyes. "Ryūjin...You sexy beast." he muttered. placing it on his left shoulder with his right hand. As he held it there, he breathed deep, looking at Gin with a grin. "Awaken, Ryūjin!" The eyes of the skull flared, and Trilby winced in pain as a sharp metal barb pierced his skin. He threw himself against the wall, taking his hand off the skull that was now supporting itself as it drilled through his flesh, slowly burrowing through his shoulder blade and carving it's way through his body.

He slammed his head into the hospital floor, biting his own tongue to hide the scream. This level of pain was beyond anything he had felt. His insides were being morphed. It burned. The wet sound of tearing flesh rung out as two circular holes began to carve through his shoulder blades. From these holes, two thin, wing like structures began to grow, clinging to his back like closed wings. The Ryūjin flared once more, and Trilby collapsed, his screams replaced with harsh breathing. The integration process was over. He laid there for a few seconds regaining his wits before dragging himself to his feet.

Looking to his left, the skull was still suspended on his shoulder. He reached up over his shoulder, grasping at the tip of one of the Quivers. He grasped a handle, pulling out a thin blade. Running his finger softly along it's surface, it cut it deeply from a light touch, just like Yamato would. Perfect. He dropped the blade, reaching up to the same Quiver, producing another one. Perfect. The device was a success. Looking up at Gin with a sigh, he couldn't help but Grin before realising, he'd just essentially tortured himself in-front of her. That wasn't exactly wise. "uh... sorry, I know that must have looked quite bad. But I'm fine."

Gin slowly let go of Trilby's hand, knowing that he had never been the type of person to divulge his emotions freely. She was the same way, so she couldn't quite hold it against him, could she? His answer was enough, for now, even though it could hardly be called an answer to her question. She nodded at his suggestion and went on to open the book. Elementals on Fuuinjutsu? It shouldn't be too hard to grasp, really. Gin had always been talented, she picked up new things rather quickly, unless they involved chakra control. She had never been too good at anything that required a firm grasp on her chakra system. That was the main reason why she couldn't stand medical Ninjutsu or Genjutsu. It was why she had become skeptical of the two. She could only hope that Fuuinjutsu would be different. The young Kazekage flipped the book open. "Fūinjutsu are a type of jutsu that seal objects, living beings, chakra, along with a wide variety of other things within another object. Fūinjutsu can also be used to unseal objects either from within something or someone." The book began with a basic definition of the specialty in question, but it was nothing that Gin didn't know already. Then again, she was only just learning the specialty. She couldn't expect to be immediately thrown into techniques explaining how to seal a Bijuu inside someone else. She sighed. This was like going back to the Academy all over again. Not only that, but for the past month she had had trouble focusing and concentrating on the simplest of things. Maybe this wasn't the best time to learn Fuuinjutsu. But then again, she would never have such an amount of free time ever again. She would be burried underneath her paperwork as soon as she got better, as soon as she could exit the hospital. She would have to continue acting as Sunagakure's leader.

Frankly, the mere thought of having to go back to face the world scared Gin. It was difficult for her to explain, but at the moment she felt both weak and incompetent. She felt unprotected and alone. Most of all, she felt broken. There were very few things that were keeping her alive, that helped her regain her will to live. The first, of course, were Chie and Reiko. She would do anything for her two little girls, regardless of what it might mean for her. She had to set an example, she had to be strong for them. She wanted to see them grow up, she wanted to train them, help them in whatever way she could. Maybe she would retire some day and let one of the two take control over Sunagakure. The mere thought of it made her lips twitch slightly into a smile. Then there was Sunagekure itself, the village that she had come to love over the years. She owed it to her villagers to keep herself alive until someone more fitting was able to replace her, or when she reached a proper age for retirement. And then there was Trilby. She looked at him from the corners of her eyes. He had played his part in nursing Gin back to health, back to sanity. And in turn, she had come to care for him more than she would have liked to admit, so much so that the idea of living for him didn’t sound too bad at all. Gin sighed in frustration, she had gotten sidetracked.

If she ever wanted to learn Fuuinjutsu, she had to concentrate. Reading through the book would have to be the first step. And she wouldn’t let a simple book beat her. It was just a compilation of words, right? How hard could it really be? Gin stared at the book intently and pursed her lips. She had managed to get to the second page, which was more than she could say about the other books that she had tried to go over ever since she had first started to speak. The first chapter was a brief history and overview of the specialty itself, nothing too detailed, just and explanation of what the rest of the book was about. The second chapter went more into detail about the basics of the specialty, what made the simplest of seals tick, how the different parts of the drawing affected the seal and how to infuse chakra into it in order to make it stronger and more effective. The explanations were simple and easy to grasp. She was sure that she would be able to get it in a few days. She looked forward to it, actually.

Gin was immersed in the book, so much so that she didn’t even notice someone else entering the room, nor did she notice that he had handed something to Trilby. If she had, she would have been interested in the weapon, without a doubt. Had she been herself at that moment, she might have even tried to keep the thing for herself. But alas, the young Kazekage was bedridden and borderline catatonic – though albeit, she was slowly getting better. In any case, she didn’t even turn to look at Trilby as he began to fuse himself with the weapon. She did, however, notice him let out a scream that no doubt the entire hospital ward had heard as well. Gin looked up from the book to see Trilby agonizing as the weapon literally drilled holes into his back. Her thoughts bounced rapidly in her head. She didn’t even know what the thing was or where it had come from. Her expression turned into a mixture of shock, fear and worry. She couldn’t let anything happen to him. He was literally the only thing that was tethering her to what was left of her sanity, not to mention the fact that he was one of the very few people that she allowed herself to care for.

Gin sprang from her bed, or at least she tried. She had spent an entire month without moving her limbs beyond a small twitch. Her muscles had grown weak, so much so that she couldn’t even support her own weight. It was quite pathetic, but she couldn’t allow herself to worry about how weak she had grown over the past few weeks. Trilby came first. She fell on top of Trilby with a loud thud, but she didn’t care. She tried to pry that thing off of him, though to no avail. When Trilby’s screams turned into labored breaths, Gin slowly stopped trying to separate him from the weapon. She simply let herself rest on top of him before she noticed that they were in a rather compromising position. Gin smiled and began to laugh. It was only natural, wasn’t it? He was fine and there was nothing to worry about. Her laughter came mostly out of relief. It sounded childish and sweet. She rolled onto the floor next to him and let herself rest there. She couldn’t get herself up and back to the bed anyways. She would simply look at Trilby and smile as he got up. She didn’t even look at what the weapon could do, she just kept her eyes fixed on his face.

Gin leapt from her bed, collapsing on top of Trilby with a thud. Her hands wrapped around the skull on his shoulder, pulling on it with force. However, the Ryujin was too deeply embedded into his system to be removed, and all that happened was Trilby began to be dragged across the floor slightly as Gin buried her force into the skull. As the integration process stopped, and Trilby's muffled screams came to a stop, Gin stopped tearing at his shoulder. She began to laugh passionately. She sounded happy, like she was relieved it was all over. As she rolled off Trilby, he sighed, the pressure on the quivers beneath his back being relieved.

Trilby dragged himself to his feet, flexing the Quivers as he got used to the feeling of them hanging from his back. He breathed deeply, beginning to flood the Ryujin with chakra as he exhaled. The Quivers rose up, the spines that consisted them rapidly growing skin like sheets between it's joints, forming wings. The wings began to flap, and Trilby hovered a foot off the ground for a second before landing on the ground again. The material collapsed down as he landed, wrapping around the Quivers to keep itself sleek. Trilby then reached up, pulling out a blade from either quiver and tossing them towards the window. They flew straight and fast, smashing through the window and flying off into the distance, landing on the wall of the building across the street. Perfect.

Turning back to Gin, Trilby bent down, sliding one hand under her kneecaps, and the other under her shoulder blades. He stayed there, hunched over, while the wings on his back began to flap. He rose into the air a few feet before lowering her softly onto the bed. "Are you okay Gin?"

Gin's laughter died down to a giggle until she ultimately returned to normal. But she still smiled as she looked at him hovering a few feet over the ground. The sight made her giggle happily. She let her hands rest over her stomach and simply relaxed. She knew she couldn't quite move anywhere, not on her own. She would work on that later, she supposed. She would have to undergo a few weeks of rehabilitation therapy. She would have usually been annoyed or frustrated, even ashamed of the fact that she could barely move on her own. But for the first time in a while, she finally felt happy. She wasn't about to let go of the feeling. She didn't want to, she refused to. For a brief moment, her thoughts drifted to Trilby. Was he the cause of her happiness? That was likely. After all, what else could it be? For a brief moment, she thought that maybe, if he made her this happy, she would always remain by her side. The thought was both brief and childish, though. Gin knew that it was nothing short of wishful thinking.

Life simply didn't work that way. She knew that tragedy was inevitable; it always was. Even if she did stay with him, she knew that for one reason or another they would be torn apart from each other, be it by death or any other circumstance. But maybe the happiness she would gain from it would outweigh the loss and suffering. Maybe this, just being by his side for now, could be enough. The thought made Gin smile. As he carried her, Gin extended her hand towards him. She cupped his cheek in her palm and smiled. She caressed his face lightly, letting herself just enjoy the simple moment of bliss as he set her down on the hospital bed. Gin closed her eyes briefly and opened them again as Trilby asked if she was fine, if there was anything wrong with her. Maybe there was. Maybe she had finally snapped and lost her grip on sanity. But if this is what insanity felt like, she would never go back to her usual self. She smiled and looked at Trilby directly in the eye. "I'd like to think so," She said, sounding slightly dazed. She adjusted herself and made herself comfortable with what little movement she could muster. Her head sank into the pillows as she tucked herself back into the sheets. "Thank you," She said after a moment of silence. And she couldn't have meant it more.

Trilby lowered Gin softly into her bed, helping her as she tucked herself back into the sheets. Trilby hovered over her for a second after helping adjust her sheets, staring into her eyes. "Thank you" she whispered, smiling at him. Trilby's body moved on it's own, he dropped down and pressed his lips into hers. It felt fantastic. It felt... Right. After a few seconds, he slowly moved his lips away, breaking the kiss. He couldn't help but blush, he hadn't even thought about doing it, he just... did it. He expected her to get angry at him, slap him maybe, but either way it was worth it. He hadn't realised it til now but he didn't just like her as a boss or a friend, but he truly cared for her. He could see himself being happy if he could do that once a day for the rest of his life...

A few days later...

"Sloppy!" Trilby grunted, staring at Gin. "Your seal work is sloppy. You'd be lucky if you could seal a cockroach. Again!" Trilby never had much talent as a teacher. He was an uzumaki, his gift for sealmanship was natural, he had never taught someone how to do it before, and it wasn't exactly the easiest of arts to learn. It required exact focus, experience and a great intellect to boot. Gin had the intelligence, but she needed the experience. Until then, she was simply a fish out of water.

Gin kept her eyes fixed on Trilby. She cocked her head to the side as she watched him let himself down on the ground. Some part of her probably knew that he would try to kiss her. And she did nothing to stop him. As he moved towards her and pressed his lips to hers, Gin would only smile into the kiss as she returned it. A small part of her felt conflicted. It whispered that she had just barely lost Sake, that she had barely even had a time to mourn his death. His grave wasn't even cold yet and she was already falling for someone else. Wait... was she... was she really falling for Trilby? She wondered, more with curiosity than with fear or any other sort of emotion. Maybe a part of her had already accepted that as a fact. It was that same part of her that drove her to be selfish. Sake would want to see her happy, wouldn't he? Regardless of the fact that that would likely mean that he would some day be replaced. She deserved to be happy after all the pain and suffering that she had just gone through. She clung to the moment tightly. She didn't want to let go of this overwhelming bliss that she was feeling. Gin's hand still cupped Trilby's cheek, deepening the kiss ever so slightly.

Once they parted, Gin wouldn't say anything. She would just smile at the man and caress his cheek lightly. That would be the first night that she managed to sleep without the medication. It would mark the fact that she was getting better, that she would soon get past this phase of tremendous grief. A few months later, she would begin to be haunted by nightmares whenever she slept, but for now, she felt peaceful as she finally drifted into a dreamless sleep for the first time in over a month.

Day twenty eight...

Gin was frustrated, to say the least. Was Fuuinjutsu really this hard? She was only supposed to be drawing a fucking seal with chakra! Honestly, if Trilby did it, how hard could it really be? Of course, she didn't mean to underestimate her student's abilities in any way, but she had always prided herself on being talented at almost every ninja art that she attempted to perform. With the exception of anything that required even the minimum amount of chakra control... yeah. This... this wouldn't do it for her, would it? Every time she tried to draw a seal, she either only half sealed whatever she was trying to seal into the cheap scroll - which she blamed constantly for her own lack of natural talent - or the thing broke away from the seal after a few seconds of giving the young Kazekage false hope. "I'm trying, alright?!" She yelled back at her current teacher and... whatever the hell they were now. "You have absolutely no patience!" She said, though she knew that she was being slightly... hypocritical when she said that. Gin was about to draw own of her many swords, slice the scroll on half and call it quits. She took the liberty of slapping Trilby upside the head, mostly to relieve her own frustration.

And Gin, being the way that she always was, would never admit to the fact that she simply lacked talent and needed further instruction. "If anything, I'm failing because you don't know how to explain a damn thing!" She said as she crossed her arms over her chest and looked to the side. "Try using clearer language and I might actually get this right. In other words, Japanese! Do you speak it?!" She scolded. Of course, he would likely see past the fact that she was taking out her frustration on him. Though that would only make this little argument escalate and turn into a fight, which Gin would instantly lose after trying and instantly failing to stand up. Therapy had helped her regain some mobility in her legs, but she still had a rather long way to go. She was able to stand up and walk to the bathroom, though she needed to use Trilby as a crutch more often than not. It surprised her how she could always find him willing to help her. He must have truly cared for her if he went through all of this trouble just to see her recover. Did he just want to make her happy? Gin certainly hoped so. She would gladly return the favor. Her posture relaxed and she once again turned to face Trilby, looking slightly dejected.

"You have absolutely no patience!" Gin snarled, slapping him roughly in frustration. The Ryujin released a groaning noise, it's eyes flaring bright red. The Quivers on Trilby's back shot up into combat formation instinctively, like the device was angry. Trilby sighed, placing his right hand softly on the skull, causing the wings to quietly simmer down. His control over the Ryujin was still lacking. It would improve, though. Slowly but surely. "My dear, I have no patience and you have no talent."

Tearing open a pouch on his jacket, a small, shiny silver scroll fell out. "It can't be helped..." Trilby groaned, throwing the scroll at Gin. He pointed up to his prosthetic eye with a frown. "That is the scroll for how I did this eye. You'll see it's broken down into many smaller portions. There are two things that you'll want to look at; There is a seal that converts biological energy to water to keep it lubricated. There is also an inflow seal. It connects to any other seal and acts as a bottleneck. It's what causes the seal on my eye to contract when it hits a certain level of light. They're both simple seals combined with a few more complex ones to form this eye. It's all there, black and white, clear as crystal. If you cannot do those seals you'll never be able to do fuuinjutsu"

Trilby reached his hand up, rubbing his prosthetic eye with a sigh. This eye was his ultimate masterpiece. No one knew how it was done, and the only record of it was now in Gin's lap. Why did he trust her so much? It was insane. He'd just handed his life works over to a grumpy temperamental woman. What a fool. "The water seal. if you put it on a scroll and it works it should begin to create moisture when you touch it. If you put the other seal on it you should be able to make the size of the seal on the paper change as the level of chakra you feed it changes."

Gin's eyes narrowed as she looked at Trilby's weapon. It started flaring, displaying its abilities as if it had a life of its own, which was apparently the case. Gin snarled at the thing, though she doubted that it had enough of a life of its own to actually hear her response or see that Gin's posture had tensed slightly. She knew she was being childish and prideful, but she couldn't quite help it. She had always been that way, ever since she was a small child. She partially blamed her mother for this, again, refusing to blame herself and her own incompetence for anything. For instance, when it came to medical ninjutsu and even genjutsu, she simply said that she didn't trust either ability. She discredited both fields as simple knacks that some talentless shinobi used to trick their opponents. This was particularly true for the latter. She despised illusions more than she did medics. She always found it difficult to tell when she was in one, when her reality was being morphed and played with.

But that was hardly the case now. She respected fuuinjutsu, which was one of the reasons why she had no problem with the idea of adopting the specialty as her own. But still, the fact that she had to go through the whole process of learning it was such a bother... Gin couldn't help but groan once again in frustration. The young Kazekage was caught off guard when Trilby handed her the scroll. It was complex, to say the least. Gin tried to wrap her mind around the concept of different types of seals, their different uses and different effects. She found them confusing, this one more so than the rest. And Trilby was being a show off. However, Gin couldn't bring herself to think ill of him for it. She had always considered him a genius, even when he was still her student, not that she would say so out loud unless proded for an extended period of time. In any case, she rather liked the fact that he was showing his capabilities a shinobi. She liked hearing him talk about something he loved. How passionate he sounded made Gin smile slightly.

The young Kazekage traced her fingers over the seals in the scroll and grimaced. She still wouldn't be able to get it, would she? "My dear? We have pet names for each other, now?" She asked, her tone sounding dull due to her own frustration. She let go of the scroll and handed it back to Trilby with a frustrated sigh. "I can't even get a regular seal, a basic one, what makes you think I'll be able to work with one that has elements in it? Elements that I've never even studied!" She whined. But hell, she might as well try, right? The young woman picked up the cheap scroll once again. She stared at it blankly for a moment. She placed a simple kunai on it - the one she had been practicing with for a while, now - and concentrated. She performed the handseals needed for the simple technique - though Gin would never really call it that - and hoped for the best. She closed her eyes, refusing to look at what she assumed would be crappy work. She would wait for Trilby to judge that.

"My dear? We have pet names for each other, now?" Gin asked, sounding bored. "I wasn't aware we needed them." Trilby retorted, sounding equally bored. "I can't even get a regular seal, a basic one, what makes you think I'll be able to work with one that has elements in it? Elements that I've never even studied!" Trilby sighed. Of course she was complaining, and she'd shrugged off what he'd said to boot. "An elemental seal designed to teach academy students the raw basics of fuuinjutsu. Now shut the fuck up and do it." Gin performed the technique, shutting her eyes as she did so.

Trilby reached through and tapped the seal silently as she did it, correcting the errors in it. "Perfect" he declared, pulling his hand back and smiling falsely. She refused to even look at the seals she made, it was a confidence issue, not a talent issue. She needed to toughen up and have some faith in herself. Until she did, she'd get nowhere.

Gin held her eyes shut and pursed her lips. She refused to open them. She knew that Trilby would scold her once again for having failed to do a half decent job if she did. Gin felt she could delay that by keeping her eyes closed, as if trying to completely ignore reality. She both felt and heard Trilby tapping on the sheet of paper that Gin had placed her hands on. Why would he, though? It sounded purposeful. Gin could tell that he hadn't just done so on accident. She unconsciously pursed her lips. Such an odd little gesture... The expression on her face changed from that of frustration to slight confusion, you could even call it curiosity. Was he just inspecting her work or was this his way of telling her to let go of the sheet so that he could evaluate it and tell her exactly what was wrong? It turns out that it was neither of the two.

As Trilby stated that she had done an excellent job, Gin finally decided to open her eyes. He was even smiling. "You're lying through your teeth, Trilby," She said as she rolled her eyes. She appreciated the sentiment behind the little white lie, but truth be told that wouldn't quite help her actually learn anything. Gin let go of the scroll and let herself collapse back into her bed with a loud groan. "You're no help at all," She mumbled halfheartedly. She didn't mean what she said. She knew that she practically owed Trilby her life after all he had done for her, after all he had helped her through. She rolled over onto her side and sighed. "How about we call it quits for today? I'm tired," She mumbled into her pillow before realizing that he probably hadn't gotten any of them. Eh, she would let her body language speak for her in that case. She patted the empty space next to her on the hospital bed. "Come over here," She said. She wanted his company, his comfort. She found that having him close to her was soothing.

"Come over here" Gin said, patting the empty space on her bed. She...wanted him to... sleep with her? Trilby had never expected such a proposition. It caught him completely off guard. Still, he wasn't about to reject her. Trilby's right hand glided up to the Ryujin, sitting softly on it's skull. "Rest now..." he whispered to the Ryujin. The skull whispered, and the wings on Trilby's back began to break down, drawing back into his spine. Trilby pulled on the Ryujin, causing the skull to remove itself from him shoulder with a groan. It had left behind a small, circular steel shaft in his shoulder, extending down into his very bones.

Standing up, Trilby sat the skull on the seat where he had been resting, before sitting onto the bed next to Gin. "So...Now what?" he said, looking at Gin awkwardly. He didn't know what to do, now. She'd caught him completely off guard.

Gin settled comfortably in the hospital bed. It was what she had basically been doing for the past month. The hospital room with its white and bare walls had become nothing short of her own home. She knew that once she stepped foot in the Kazekage's mansion once again, it would feel strange despite how familiar it had become over the past few months. Becoming the Kazekage had really taken its toll on Gin, hadn't it? As a Jounin, she had basically been carefree in comparison. She didn't half to deal with half as much stress, half as much responsibility. But she knew that she couldn't resign her position and give her title to someone else. She would only do that once she was old and tired or after she was dead and gone. And she wouldn't die without putting up a decent fight, she knew that much. But for that, she would eventually have to regain her strength.

Gin could sense that Trilby was unsure of what to do. His movements were hesitant. He had decided to simply sit next to her as if he feared getting too close to her. Gin chuckled, wondering if this was because he was inexperinced or simply because it was her that he was dealing with. She prefered the latter. And as if his body language weren't enough to practically spell that he felt awkward and uncomfortable, he was practically asking her what he should do now. Gin shook her head as her back faced towards him. "Do whatever you feel comfortable with, I won't stop you" Gin shrugged. She found that giving him instructions like that felt unnatural and rigid. besides, she didn't want to make him more uncomfortable than he already was. She would be fine if he just sat there and watched as she slept.

"Do whatever you feel comfortable with, I won't stop you" Trilby was, well, shocked. He didn't expect such a... forward proposition. Still, she wasn't fully recovered, he wasn't going to take advantage of her, there would be plenty of time for that in the future. Trilby stood up, pulling the sheets back a bit and crawling into the bed next to Gin. He kissed her softly, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her in close. That was as far as he would go, he just wanted to sleep next to her. It felt nice.

The next day...

Trilby's eyes slowly drifted open, only to see the back of Gin's head. He was still wrapped around her, as he had been the previous night. It was the best night's sleep Trilby had had in years. He pulled himself up out of the bed, slowly and begrudgingly. He knew he had to get up, he was doing the Kazekage job for Gin, and the paperwork wouldn't wait. Still, the nights rest next to her was fantastic. "Wake up dear. You have training to do." Trilby declared, reasonably soft and quiet. He was enjoying watching her sleep. She looked so... peaceful. Still, she had physical therapy to do, as well as Fuuinjutsu training. He would make her get this, even if it killed her.

Truth be told, Gin hadn't meant to sound so forward. She had simply meant that she didn't mind if he just sat there or if he actually lay down next to her. If he had truly attempted anything beyond simply wrapping his arms around Gin, she would have reacted negatively. She wanted to take her time with Trilby. She wanted to see if what they had - which she herself had trouble labeling and placing a name on - was something genuine or if it was just fleeting and brief. But she would worry about such things later. Right now, she didn't need something more to bother her. She let Trilby wrap his arms around her and hold her closely to him. She rested her head against his chest and sighed happily. She pressed her lips to his briefly and softly. She felt her stomach tingle when she did. It made her want to laugh at herself for reacting so childishly to something that she had done so many times before. She kissed Trilby's cheek one more time before she let herself drift off to sleep. She was glad that she no longer had to depend on medication to do so. She could sleep on her own, now, or at least she thought she could. She didn't quite know if Trilby had just replaced the medication. In any case, she wouldn't complain.

Day twenty nine...

Gin didn't like being woken up. In fact, she rather hated it. She enjoyed it when people let her wake up at her own time and there was a good reason for that. Most of the time, she woke up in a foul mood. This, of course, was no exception. Had she been back to her usual level of strength, Trilby would have likely seen himself fly out the window like so many before him that attempted to so the same thing. But since Gin knew that she couldn't do this, so she simply settled for trying to slap Trilby across the face as soon as her eyes shot open. Briefly after doing that, she wrapped the sheets over her head and groaned. "I don't want to!" She whined childishly. "And you can't make me!" She said, though she knew that struggling was futile. She knew she would have to give up shortly, much to her own dismay. "And I thought you said petnames were stupid, dear," Gin repeated, sounding somewhat mocking.

"I don't want to, and you can't make me! And I thought you said petnames were stupid, dear," Gin groaned in an unusual mixture of mocking and angry. Still, any step towards her being her old self was a good sign, no matter how obnoxious it was. "I said I wasn't aware we needed them. Keep being sarcastic and I will forever call you "Sabaku no bi", now..." Trilby draged himself up, walking towards the bed again and bending down slightly towards Gin. "GET THE FUCK UP!!" he bellowed, quickly leaning back to dodge an incoming slap. "I'm doing your job for you, the least you can do is shut up and do your training."

Gin was almost to the point of thrashing and flailing. The lighting in the room didn't exactly help her go back to sleep, much to her dismay. She kept the covers pulled over her head, refusing to get up. But of course, Trilby just wouldn't have that. Was it really that hard to just leave her alone? She just wanted to rest! She needed it... kind of. Sure, she had spent a lot of time on a bed for the past month or so, but that didn't mean that recovery wasn't taxing. She was underfed, underweight and therefore possibly anemic. The way she saw it, sleep was necessary. "Sabaku no bi?" Gin repeated. "Knowing you, that probably has some sort of sarcastic ring to it," She mumbled. For a moment, as he leaned closer to her, Gin smiled. She thought he was about to crawl back into bed with her, stroke her back for a while and let her rest while he looked over her. But that was too much to ask, obviously. Instead, all she got was a loud screech in that left her ears ringing. The young Kazekage only groaned. She really didn't want to go through another day of trying and failing to grasp the basics of Fuuinjutsu. She didn't bother to slap Trilby. Deep down, she knew he was right. But still, she wanted a few minutes before she got up again. She extended her hand and grabbed Trilby's wrist, pulling him towards her while she still lied down on the bed. "Give me a few minutes and I'll get back to training," She mumbled, slipping her hand into his. She lifted her head from the pillow slightly so that she could look at him. For a brief moment, and after debating with herself whether or not to do so, she pulled on Trilby's arm hard enough to make him fall on the bed and lie back down with her. If he did fall, she would let a satisfied grin make its way across her features as she wrapped her arms around him. That would be enough to get her in a better mood, at least for the time being.

Gin's hand wrapped around Trilby's wrist, yanking him firmly back. Now he'd done it, she was pulling him back into range for a beating, surely. Trilby's right foot bashed into the chair beside the bed as he tried to regain his footing, and he fell face first on top of Gin. He braced himself for a firm hit, shutting his eyes in anticipation. One second. Two Seconds. Three seconds. Nothing. She wasn't going to hit up? How... unusual. Still, he was awkwardly sprawled across her, and that wouldn't do. Raising himself up a bit, he was about to throw himself off the bed to stop crushing her, when her arms suddenly wrapped around him, pinning him to her chest. It was unusually affectionate, especially for her. "Are you okay?" Trilby asked awkwardly, returning the embrace as he lay awkwardly on top of her.

Gin laughed as Trilby fell on top of her. She smiled in satisfaction and wrapped her arms around his back. Her embrace was firm but gentle. She wouldn't let him go that easily. She ran her fingers through his hair. She knew that he felt awkward, she could tell by the tension in his shoulders and the look on his face. "You should learn how to relax," She said, still caressing him. She shifted her weight so that they were both lying on their sides. Her legs were tangled in his as she simply looked at him and smiled. She removed the hair from his face and ran the tips of her fingers gently against the skin on his cheek and neck. Her hand finally stopped at his chest, resting there for a while. "I'm fine," She said finally, sighing happily. "I'm better than I have been for a long time," She said, pressing her forehead to his. She hesitated for a moment. Up until now, he had been the one to kiss her. She hadn't technically kissed anyone since... well, best not get into that. She felt like she was betraying the memory of the man she had once loved. His grave wasn't even cold yet and already she was... she was... falling in love with someone else. She looked at Trilby in the eye, wondering for a moment. Wouldn't he want her to be happy? She kept on asking herself this. Myabe she could just forget about her guilt, about her worries and just... Without thinking much more of it, Gin pressed her lips to Trilby's. She wrapped her arms around him once again, deepening the kiss.
