In general, the power of a shinobi is represented on a letter rank scale, ranging from E to S called Ninja Rank. A character's Ninja rank always begins at either E or D, and can be advanced by completing the requirements listed below. Characters are limited to utilizing items and techniques only one rank higher than their Ninja Rank at all times, making Ninja Rank the primary way by which a shinobi acquires new powers. In addition to Ninja Rank, characters have a Secondary Rank which represents a given shinobi's military rank within their village, or the general experience they have as a ninja, these are represented by Genin, being the default Secondary Rank, Chunin, Jonin, and Sannin, with each providing their own benefits once achieved.
The requirements for raising Ninja Rank are as follows, unless specified otherwise, the number of techniques above a shinobi's Ninja Rank available to them is 10.

Secondary Rank may sometimes be a requirement for joining village or event-specific groups or attaining special ranks such as ANBU. It is important to note that the Secondary ranks are in general completely up to the Kage of the village to bestow on its members. This means, that even if you fit the bare minimum required below, that rank up to that rank might still be denied.

If a character has been inactive for 3 months they will retain their Sannin status as long as no one else comes in to claim the spot. Note: Wanderers and Missing-nin share 3 slots together.
