The sound of steel clashing against steel sang throughout the grandiose halls of the Ganryu manor, once more the young heir found himself dueling to his heart’s content in his family’s storied dojo. Within each hand the golden eyed boy held a dulled practice katana that did fairly little to damage his sparring partner, aside from causing a few minor bruises with its blunted edge. While the young Sasaki held the advantage of two blades, his opponent held the advantage of range. Wielding a practice nodachi that was twice as long as each of Kyousuke’s swords, Nami kept the heir at bay with a series of thrusts, aiming to stab at the center of his chest, each time Kyousuke would send her blade away, parrying with one sword and aiming to close the distance and slash with his other sword in one united movement. Over and over again they failed to break the other’s defenses. The two were locked in a stalemate, yet neither refuse to give in. Once more the girl thrust her blade into Kyousuke’s chest and again he parried. Immediately Kyousuke rushed in, yet he was met with a sudden cut that threatened him backwards. His opponent had used the momentum of his parry to quickly swing her nodachi the other way and strike at the boy’s midsection. Just barely, Kyousuke managed to react, blocking the blow with one sword and holding the nodachi’s blade in place with his other. Nami retracted her weapon, yet found it stuck within the boy’s clamped blades.

Kyousuke closed the distance, grinding his pair of swords  along with the nodachi until the two hilts met against each other. Immediately the boy acted, raising one sword to slash at his opponent’s throat, yet before his blow could land he was pushed back and staggered with a stiff front kick that landed on his chest. Off balanced, he was forced to take three steps back and once again the two were back to square one. Kyousuke dusted off his chest, both cleaning his dirtied kimono and gesturing to his opponent that he was completely unharmed. The eyes of the two warriors locked on to the foe in front of them; the boy pointed his left blade towards his the girl whilst lifting the other above his head, preemptively  preparing for a downwards cut, whilst the girl held the same sideways thrusting stance that had allowed her to keep Kyousuke at a distance.

For what seemed like an eternity the two stood in their respective stances waiting for the other to strike, every now and then Kyousuke took a small step forward to allow his front sword contact with the opponent’s nodachi. In response, Nami inched herself backwards, seeking to maintain control of the range. Slowly he began decreasing the intervals in between his steps, forcing his opponent to back herself into a corner. Finally he took one last step and again Nami mirrored, this time though she felt a wooden barrier on her back that prevented her from backing away. The girl bounced off of the wall, and in front of her Kyousuke burst forward. In panic the girl did the only thing she could, Nami thrust her blade forwards aiming to stab at the boy’s chest. Prepared for her strike, Kyousuke parried the blade with his left and pinned it down the hilt as he closed the distance. At the same time his right blade descended swiftly and stopped just as it reached his opponent’s neck.

“Checkmate.” The boy said with a smug tone, pressing the dull edge of his blade on Nami’s throat. A faint smile crept on the older lady’s lips and eventually she let go of her weapon, dropping the nodachi on the sturdy wooden floor. “Well fought.” The purple haired woman said. Kyousuke lowered his blades and step backwards, still facing his opponent. When he had made ample space, the boy lowered his head and bowed. Nami returned the gesture, bowing just as the younger shinobi did. After the proper sparring mannerisms of the Sasaki were completed and respects had been exchanged, the heir immediately smirked. “That makes how many for today?” He asked, already knowing the answer. Nami tilted her head, giving off a look of annoyance. “Six wins?” Kyousuke answered, blatantly feigning ignorance and prodding the older lady’s anger.

Nami frowned, “Six wins, sure, but don’t forget that you used two swords.” Kyousuke shook his head midway through the the older girl's sentence, as if already predicting what she was going to say. “If anything, cousin, you held the advantage with your longer nodachi. Honestly, if you couldn't defeat me with that long of a weapon, I don't think you'd ever stand a chance of defeating me in a fair fight.” Sparks of a seventh bout began to ignite. “Oh, you want another go? Why don't we use jutsu this time so I can teach you some respect.” Nami replied instantly, outraged by his younger family member’s attitude. The two began to eye each other down, Kyousuke who had just sheathed his two practice katanas immediately parted the blades once more from their scabbards. “Pick up your weapon,” The young swordsman commanded, raising his left arm to point his sword’s tip towards the girl. “and watch as you lose for the seventh time today.” Kyousuke said. “Aww.” She mocked. “Is that supposed to frighten me?” Nami said, silently chuckling.

Slowly, the two moved, eventually finding themselves returning to the center of the dojo where their first bout had begun. Unlike the several practice matches that the two had held earlier ago, a difference in the air was palpable. This wasn't  just another simple sparring session, instead this was now a wager for the honor of the two prideful Sasaki children. Shimmering as he parted them from their wooden scabbards, the heir’s elegant twin blades announced their presence. Shisui and Kitetsu. Likewise Nami followed, the purple haired girl drew her nodachi, its craftsmanship and detail rivaling the beauty of Kyousuke’s katanas. Somehow as the two bickered back and forth, they had managed to raise the stakes of their duel to the point that they had decided to abandon  the training weapons for their actual signature blades.

A ten meter distance separated the two. Kyousuke circled to the girl's right side, yet she simply mirrored his movements, preventing him from escaping the line of her nodachi. Reacting to the girl, he shifted his weight, pivoting with his back leg and bursting to instantly close the distance between them. He entered her range, catching her by surprise and deflecting her nodachi away with Shisui whilst Kitetsu stabbed at her throat, drawing first blood. A wave of suiton blasted him back to the walls of the dojo, nearly staggering him to his knees were it not for the twin blades that he had used as beams of support. Sustaining no major damage from his opponent's jutsu, he rose from his position, point the tip of his silver edge to the trickle of blood coursing through Nami’s neck. “Ready to give up, cousin?” He prodded, seeking to control the emotions if his opponent. Moving her hand to inspect the cut on her neck, Nami attempted to maintain a straight face. She ran her finger through the wound, checking its severity. Eventually, she affixed her eyes to the boy, upon realizing that Kyousuke’s blade had only marked her with a flesh wound. “You wish.” She said firmly, as the boy moved into a lowered stance.

With a good distance between them, Nami huffed trying to regain control of her breath. Attempting to clear herself of the adrenaline and focus her mind into a state of flow, the girl closed her eyes for a brief second. Suddenly, the deafening sound of thunder crackling in the air shot through her ears. Her eyes opened reactively, and she would come upon the sight of the once twenty five meter far boy, right in front of her. Using a blast of raiton chakra to enhance his physical capabilities, Kyousuke bulleted through the air, closing the gap between the two within half of a second. Timing his movement in attune to the girl's shutting eyelids, he was awarded a brief moment to mask the intentions of his next move. The young swordsman’s twin blades launched diagonally, each aiming to cut from the side of the girl's hips to the tip of her shoulders, forming an ‘X’ on her chest. Blood splattered across the air, splashing down the wooden floor in the form of small droplets as the pair of katanas found their mark. Unrelenting, the heir shot his back leg upwards, firing a front push kick to the girl's chest in the split second that she flinched in pain. His heel clamored to Nami’s diaphragms, pushing her back and adding even more damage to the already wounded part of her body.

Strong-willed, as all Sasaki were, the girl aimed to make the best out of her less than ideal situation. With the faint margin of evasion closed down due to her body’s natural reaction to the deep cuts, Nami was forced to take the full brunt of Kyousuke’s kick, clogging the veins in her lungs and stealing the air that she sought to breathe. However, through sheer will, she mustered a burst of strength to allow her shaking legs to push herself backwards using the momentum of the front kick to create a healthy distance between the two. Mid-air, she drew a string of hand seals with the use of one hand, summoning a surge of iryo ninjutsu to the injured portion of her body. In what seemed like an instant, the cells in her body began to rapidly form, closing down the wound and removing all signs of its existence. She grasped her breath, taking in a set of much needed oxygen in her lungs. Seeking to take the offensive, the girl mustered another set of hand signs, aiming her lips to fire a burst of highly pressurized suiton canon to the approaching boy.

Aiming to remain one step ahead his opponent, Kyousuke preemptively mustered two waves of chakra, funneling each distinct color of blue and black towards Shusui and Kitetsu. He stabbed both blades down the wooden flooring, spreading waves of his own chakra to the surrounding area. At first inks of strange dark writing filled the dojo, with the boy at its center. Next, a torrent of lightning rose from the floor, locking the two within the walls of a ten meter arena. The girl launched her attack, yet to her surprise no chakra would be summoned. Suddenly she’d feel her legs betray her along with the shocking jolt of raiton that now coursed throughout her body. She was stunned, left open for him to attack freely. Seizing the moment Kyousuke burst forward with his full speed, aiming to close the short distance and stab both his blades on the opponent’s chest. He rushed her, and though she made an attempt to muster another set of hand seals to end his seal, it was all too late. By the time she had successfully dissipated his seal another had taken its place. With the two swords now struck deep into her shoulders, the boy funelled his chakra. This time the seal was marked on her body, preventing her from the use of chakra. Legs still paralyzed from Kyousuke’s jutsu, the girl yielded, dropping to her knees. “Like I said.” He spoke proudly, ending his prison of lightning and taking his blades off of her shoulders. “You win this time.” She commented, now with both hands over the holes in her arms, healing herself of the wounds he had inflicted.

Satisfied with his victory, the boy crashed to the dojo floor, sitting in front of his cousin. It had been so long since they had last fought like they did today. More than anything he was glad to be back in his home of Kumogakure. So much had happened since his last return to the village and things were far different than he had last remembered them to be. Gone were the streets filled with families walking hand in hand, instead they were filled with fear of the cultists that now invaded their territory. Luckily, the Sasaki district was free from the misfortunes of others, isolating themselves in their own district. “Why the serious look?” Nami asked, fully healing herself of all injuries. He turned to her with a faint smile, their brief moment of sparring brought him back to simpler times, yet things would not be the same unless he acted. “It’s nothing.” He said, eyes and mind wandering back to the clouds. Some way, somehow he needed to act. No longer was he the boy that he once was. He had passed all his trials and was now a worthy heir of his clan, a position that required for him to think about the future of the Sasaki. While he and his clansmen would live in peace, others not so fortunate were left to fend for themselves. If he had learned anything from the grandiose stories of the Sasaki clan’s revered heroes, it was that they were all servants to the common man, protectors of those unable to protect themselves. And so he refused to stand idly by.
