Rising from an artificial forest floor, contestants enter atop a wild canopy of dense forest, with doors leading them onto its apex. The terrain itself is wildly unpredictable at the top, practically necessitating the use of Supernatural Walking Practice to navigate without hindrance. However, dropping below the canopy reveals an arena of tall trees with sparse horizontal foliage for climbing.
POSTING ORDER 1 - Zinan 2 - Taiho
24 HOUR POST TIMER BEGINS FOR ZINAN 24 HOURS AFTER THIS POST
Once again, Zinan found himself in the waiting lobby for another round of the Chunin Exams. The past two rounds have were a bust for him, with him making it to the third round of the Exams by no shows or surrenders. Zinan snarled and spit on the floor. He eyed the saliva as it bubbled on the concrete and slowly spread out. He pulled his equipment pouch around and inspected the tools inside. Makibishi, kunai, shuriken, and a spool of wire were all stored meticulously inside, arranged in the most particular manner. He nodded to himself and pushed it back around to the back side of his left hip. He stood and brushed off his pants, just to adjust the scrolls that were strapped to his belt. Three scrolls were loaded with more ninja tools while the other two were left blank. He had two tantos strapped to his body as well. One tanto, that, despite Zinan's efforts, would not let go of a bit of rust, was diagonally sheathed over the Kumonosu's right shoulder blade, while another, more shoddy, tanto hung from Zinan's belt at his right hip. He fidgeted with his hitae-ate that served as a belt buckle and looked up.
An ANBU operative from the Village Hidden in the Leaves had approached him silently. The masked ninja pointed towards a small dais that had a seal similar to that of the summoning seal. With a nod, Zinan made his way over to the dais. The moment that both of his feet touched down in the middle of the circle, he was whisked away. The next moment, Zinan found himself surrounded by the rustle of leaves, the flutter and squawks of birds, and small woodland animals that were scurrying their ways away from the man who suddenly appeared. Zinan stepped from the summoning dais and dropped into the canopy below. He knew that he needed to get out of sight from his opponent.
Forcing his chakra to the soles of his feet, Zinan came to a sliding stop on the side of a large oak's trunk, horizontal to the ground. He had spotted a large piece of dead fall and knew that it would serve him well. He placed his hand against the caught log and infused it with his chakra, which prepared it for Substitution if Zinan needed it. The Leaf shinobi then bounded his way way from the log. He leaped several branches away and itched at his arms; another length of web stored itself in his web glands. Between one branch and another, Zinan's form shifted from his normal, gaunt form and dark attire, to a long, green tree snake. When his body landed on the final branch, he quickly wrapped his long form around the branch and waited, all while making sure his prepared log was in view. From here, about thirty meters from his original start point, he would observe his target.

E-rank Jutsu = -5 Chakra | Supernatural Walking Practice - Post 1 of 3:
Name: Supernatural Walking Practice (Shūgyō'shikachō ~ 修業歩然超) Canon/Custom: Canon. Rank: E. Type: Supplementary. Element: None. Range: Self. Specialty: Taijutsu (Chakra Flow). Duration: -5 chakra every 3 posts (every 2 posts if using on water). Cooldown: None. Description: Supernatural Walking Practice is a basic ninja technique. It involves using chakra flow to channel chakra to one's hands or feet, allowing him/her to walk on, or cling to, surfaces that normally do not allow it. This includes, but is not limited to, walls/ceilings, trees, and even water. Should the flow of chakra stop for any reason, the user will immediately fall off of the surface they are walking on, or plunge underwater.
E-rank Jutsu = -5 Chakra | Substitution Technique:
Name: Substitution Technique (変わり身の術 ~ Kawarimi no Jutsu) Canon/Custom: Canon. Rank: E. Type: Supplementary. Element: None. Range: One prepared item in the user's clear line of sight. Speciality: Ninjutsu. Duration: 1 post preparation. Infinite postponement, Instant activation. Cooldown: 6 posts after activation. Description: The Substitution Technique is an age-old skill which enables the user to evade the effects of an attack by switching with an item in the area. (The item---or substantial clone---used for a Substitute must be as large as the user's torso, and must be prepared at least 1 post in advance by infusing it with 5 chakra.) Activating this jutsu for another 5 chakra, the ninja moves at untraceable speed for just a moment, and the item does so as well to take the user's place; the ninja leaves behind a flickering after-image for a second, which, if damaged, releases the chakra which holds it in place in a small smoke cloud, revealing the nature of the technique and the item they have switched with. Higher-rank ninjas' afterimages are able to show some of the signs of natural impact as if it were an actual human, if only for a very short period, before 'poofing'. The user coming out of the technique creates a similar audio and visual cue with a small cloud of translucent smoke and a 'poofing' sound on appearance in the location of the item they Substituted with. This technique causes the user to move at speeds untraceable to human perception, and therefore even the user cannot coordinate attacks during the Kawarimi, or activate any other jutsu. They, however, can maneuver near someone and then attack them after the fast-movement is finished.
Name: Spider's Silk Canon/Custom: Custom Rank: D-S Type: Supplementary Element: n/a Range: Self Specialty: Ninjutsu Duration: / Cooldown: / Description: Special glands on the user's body constantly produce a set amount of the clan's special glass fiber threads. By using chakra, the clan is able to boost production, the amount of which depends on how much chakra the user applies that turn. The user can only produce the amount of fiber per turn that is paid for; otherwise they must wait for their next turn while their body creates more.
D-rank: 3 meters of fiber. No cost (Cannot be stacked) C-rank: 6 meters of fiber. -5 chakra per turn B-rank: 10 meters of fiber. -5 chakra per turn A-rank: 15 meters of fiber. -10 chakra per turn S-rank: 25 meters of fiber. - 15 chakra per turn
The glands continuously produce the D-rank supply of fiber even when not actively in use. So long as the user states this, and maintains an unbroken log of the amount of fiber currently produced in battle, the amount of fiber available increases. If not, the user is understood to only have the base D-rank amount at any time. The basic production costs no chakra; you pay only the amounts stated for the boosted production, because this is a natural bodily function of the clan, not a jutsu in and of itself.
E-rank Jutsu = -5 Chakra | Transformation Technique:
Name: Transformation Technique (変化の術 ~ Henge no Jutsu) Canon/Custom: Canon. Rank: E. Type: Supplementary. Element: None. Range: Self. Specialty: Ninjutsu. Duration: -5 every other post. Cooldown: Duration +1 post. Description: Given all the missions ninja are assigned to--battle, intelligence gathering, diversions--this is a priceless ninjutsu. It is typically used to change into people other than oneself, but one also has the ability to change into animals, plants, and even inanimate objects like weapons; however, the object can be no smaller than 1 foot long in at least one dimension. Despite this, this technique has an abundance of uses. The transformation of a master of this technique (which is generally an Academy graduation requirement) makes the user physically and visually the same as the transformed person or object in question, giving the user the exact mass and physical qualities of whatever they transformed into. This is one of the most basic ninjutsu, as such most shinobi know how to perform it. This technique does not give a ninja the abilities or jutsu of a person they transform into, nor can give the user the damaging ability of a weapon (however, this can be used as a bluff). Sensory techniques can easily pick out someone transformed using this jutsu: the user's chakra would be active, as well as the fact that their biological functions and scent are not masked by this jutsu. Costs 5 chakra on activation, and an additional 5 chakra every other post after that.

The lights of the waiting room cruelly blinded Taiho as entered the arena, his crystal blue eyes squinting painfully as they adjusted to the white phosphorus like light. He was no longer impressed by the architecture of the various arena’s, at this point he almost assumed that each location that he was to do battle at was just another fantastical battlefield that had been built in what could only be a short time.
The clothing he wore, vaguely resembles what he had worn to his last match. The brown and black martial artist pants were tucked into his black shinobi sandals. He once again wore his black tank top, revealing his heavily muscular upper body but also giving him prime mobility. Emblazoned on the front was a proud Iwagakure symbol in white that wrapped around the left side of the shirt. The shirt itself was tucked into his pants, removing all loose articles of clothing from play. His long waist length blonde hair was once again done into a ponytail, however hints of blue began to peek through the blonde waves as a reminder of of his usage of Berserk Mode. It was a rather ugly reminded in his opinion of his failure to maintain composure, a reminder that no matter how hard he tried, his body would eventually rebel against him and unleash an unholy power that threatened not only his life, but the life of whoever he was fighting.
Taking a seat on one of the waiting rooms bleachers, he’d recollect to the advice he was given before coming, as well as the various conversations he had had with other shinobi throughout his stay in Konoha. Each one wishing him good luck and their absolute faith in his ability to succeed. He actually wondered how Kizmaru was doing at this point, the young boy stepping into the forefront of his mind as he remembered that he too was taking the exams. There were a few other Iwa nin present, one named Makoto had already been eliminated, and another named Jukei was potentially thinking of forfeiting as well. The fact that there were already so few meant that with every ninja that represented Iwagakure at the exams that dropped, the pressure that piled on top of him only grew harsher and harsher.
His body shook with anticipation at this thought, the will to prove himself to the land that had taken him in and had shown a desire to keep and protect him from those who had wished him harm. The land that had instructed him on how to properly exist in a society where his own people would be considered outdated. A land where he was able to flourish even with his own genetic disadvantages. He realized now that he would do anything for this land, and while he may not have many ties, or even the best ones, that it would take a monumental effort to break that bond he had formed with those he had grown close to.
During his mental contemplation, his body idly went over a physical check up to ensure that he had everything. He had a pack of tools that contained everything that a standard shinobi would possibly want or need. He himself found very little value in such weapons, but he understood that they tended to make up the bread and butter of most shinobi’s fighting style. He would place the pouch back on his right hip, securing it with chakra and his rope belt. He would not have to worry about his gauntlets, the weapons already fastened to his hands before he even arrived. His eyes were already dulled, his mind having accepted that he would have to do what was necessary from now on to merely survive, let alone win. It was top eight, do or die. There was no more second guessing or pulling punches. He had to drop his opponents as quickly as possible to move on with little injury. He had already played his last two fights far too close for comfort in his opinion. Hopefully this time the landscape would be in his favor allowing for a quick decision.
His mental inquiry would be answered shortly afterwards as a Konoha ANBU agent materialized into his room before him. The young boy was startled slightly by the movement, the shinobi producing very little tells before appearing within mere feet of him. The ninja would direct Taiho towards a sealing platform that would transport him to his arena, the mere fact that something like this was necessary clued him in on the fact that he would likely be somewhere that would not agree with his own fighting style. He would sigh in exasperation before stepping into the sealing array. The shinobi would flash through a few quick hand seals causing the array to light up. The hand seals and the seal itself attracted Taiho’s attention as he attempted to decipher exactly what they were and what was their purpose, but before he could even get a decent look he disappeared from the waiting room and was sent directly to the battlefield.
Appearing on another platform just above the canopy of a small artificial forest that filled the arena at the same time his opponent did, Taiho once again felt the dread in his heart as he realized that the environment yet again benefitted his opponent in ways that they likely wouldn’t understand. As a close quarters combatant, such a location inherently went against everything Taiho wanted from an encounter. The interactions would be swift and fleeting, damage slight unless one of them made a bad decision. And without knowledge of how far down the trees went... Lord he hated these arenas.
Dropping down into the canopy itself, his left hand shot out to grip the trunk of the tree to slow him down, the metal of his gauntlet protecting him from any damage he may suffer from such an action. He would slow enough to land on a tree branch that was located underneath the dias before settling himself into his standard ready striking stance. He felt his chakra bubble and flow before coating and imbuing his skin with defensive properties that would keep him from being hurt without visibly being noticeable before deciding to hop off towards the center of the arena. He didn’t travel with any express speed or purpose, taking a few seconds to reach about twenty meters from the ‘center’ of the wooded area. His breathing maintained itself as he performed a mental checklist, his left hand placed firmly against the tree trunk to keep him balanced. He acknowledged the distinct lack of most notable woodland creatures outside of a few squirrels and birds, the more likely to be seen in such an area considering the arena was artificial and thus lacked any true wildlife beyond that which could actually travel there.
He saw nothing for now that would alert him to his opponents presence, but considering he was once again dealing with a ninja, he would keep his available senses at the ready for any sign that his opponent had entered the area and was preparing any sort of assault on his person.

In his snake form, Zinan watched as his opponent dropped into the arena below the canopy, around seventy, sparsely vegetated meters away from him. Zinan could see his opponent's face and body language; his opponent seemed unnerved and uncomfortable in the trees. This would serve to be to Zinan's benefit. Combat in the forest was made up of mostly short clashes of blades as the combatants swiftly passed each other by. This forest was no different, even if he could not see the bottom. There were large branches and tree limbs that served as platforms for the two genin to launch themselves and their attacks from, as well as finish their maneuvers on.
The transformed ninja unwrapped his long body and tail from the branch and coiled up on top of the wooden perch. Zinan knew that his best option would be to observe his opponent for a little while longer. He had only wished that he had made a clone before he transformed into the serpentine form that he chose. If he had shoulders, he would have shrugged with indifference. No sense in critiquing the past at this point in time.
Zinan slithered his way towards the leafy end of the branch he chose and wrapped his snake tail around a twig and shook it. He hoped to make enough noise for the other shinobi to draw closer. Zinan did choose, however, a branch that was small enough that he would not be able to hide in in his normal form. Just to be safe, though, he quickly slithered back towards the trunk of the tree and, keeping his chakra focused on the base of his "walking" surface, stretched his way, up the tree's trunk, to another tree branch. He coiled up on the new branch and peered his head around the trunk, his head resting against it. He glared down at his opponent who had closed the distance between the two of them to around forty meters. He narrowed his serpentine eyes; his web glands, that had become internalized in this transformation, uncomfortably stretched with another three meters of web.
It was a slow start, he knew, and it did not make for a good show for the audience, but Zinan knew that people died in these types of exams. They were designed to demonstrate what the individual genin knew about being a shinobi and he would do everything in his power to show the Hokage what he was made of. The other Villages be damned. He would become a chunin, amass much more power, and become a weapon of the Village Hidden in the Leaves that would strike fear in the hearts of its enemies, both domestic criminals and terrorists, and shinobi from rival Villages.

Time seemed to tick by for Taiho as his opponent had either once again stopped far before where the designated starting area was supposed to be, or had decided to forgo the initial conflict by encircling Taiho to gain the upperhand. Both of those options left a bad taste in Taiho’s mouth as he glanced about with quick flashes of his eyes to catch any sight of his opponent. His ears strained to hear above the dull roar of the crowd and the whispers of the wind as his left hand pushed off the tree trunk setting him into a ready stance. It seemed he was once again in a battle against someone who considered themselves a mid to long ranged combatant, or at least was far more sneaky than the typical close ranged opponent. It slightly unnerved him that he had been unable to locate the boy so far, considering he was facing yet another Leaf ninja, however this time in what could be considered their home environment.
He idly considered pulling out one of the awkward throwing weapons that the ninja used, his hands twitching towards his weapon pouch. However it was the sound of leaves rustling a couple dozen meters away that caught his attention. The sight of the branch swaying in the wind was odd, especially considering the branch in question was far too small to be useful for someone to perch on. Also it was somewhat in his view, the dense forestry creating a sort of pathway to the branch in question. This caused him to be a bit more on alert however he resigned himself to at least investigating the noise. He would bound forward, keeping himself to the organized tree branches as he approached the center of the clearing cautiously. If he was left unaccosted he would stop after thirty meters, crouching himself down about ten meters from the branch in question. Whether his opponent was still there or not was out of the question as he paid attention to his surroundings as closely as possible. If he was given any sign that his opponent was no longer there, or even assaulting him from another direction, he would be ready to respond in kind. The crowd had quieted down enough that there were no ambient sounds within the arena itself now, leaving only the quiet rustles of his own movement to preoccupy him. This meant that he would be able to hear if his opponent casted or dispelled any techniques as he approached his destination. His mind was clear for once through a battle. Idle thoughts left behind as he focused all of his attention to outside sources.

Zinan's bait had worked. He knew that it was a simple trick and that it would most likely bring alarm to his opponent without drawing them in close, but this opponent was either dim or reckless. Zinan leaned towards the later and assumed that his opponent was a close combat fighter. This was not something that Zinan could appreciate; he was a mid to long range combatant and he mainly served as a support combatant. These one on one encounters that the Exams kept throwing his way were not something that he could enjoy. They forced him into a type of combat that he did not specialize in. Zinan relinquished his mental focus on the dilemma when his internalized web glands itched again in earnest, with another three meters of web.
Zinan watched as Taiho stopped around ten meters from his elevated position. He looked down on the other shinobi and then to the crowd that had hushed. He mentally sighed; they all came for a fight and he supposed that he should give him that fight. Zinan launched himself downwards from the branch that he had perched himself on. His opponent was slightly below him and he was to Taiho's front left. His snake transformation jutsu ended with a poof and a puff of smoke, which revealed his human form.
In the middle of his downward flight, Zinan pulled his rust tinged tanto from its over-the-shoulder sheathe with his right hand and, with his left hand, he drew three shuriken from the tool pouch on the rear of his left hip and flung them at his opponent. Just before the middle shuriken left his hand, however, he attached a thin and invisible thread of chakra to it, just in case the shuriken missed. He brought the tanto to bear, with its point forward, in a downwards slash, from right to left, to slash from Taiho's shoulder to hip. He made sure, however, to keep some chakra focused on his feet, for his landing, even if it was far below his current position, would still need to be abruptly halted.

The lack of audible dissonance between the crowd and the battle itself threw Taiho for a loop. What was taking his opponent so long to strike, was the young man that confident in his skill and so patient that he could wait for the perfect moment to strike his opponent without fail? Had Taiho finally run into an opponent that could out maneuver him both mentally and physically? Or were his own mental deficiencies making themselves known after his bout with his own internal rage. Taeru had tried to calm the boy down, make him see some sort of rational end to his rage, but he knew the truth. It was uncontrollable, like the great storm of Jupiter, even when it wasn’t visible, it was still raging on just by the force of its own existence. So it was no small surprise for Taiho that he couldn’t stop himself, he couldn’t hold it in. His mind was already cloudy and in disarray from the turmoil and the silence made it no better. Sound was good, sound helped him focus, but when there was nothing but his own thoughts. It was as if someone had placed him in an echo chamber with the world’s worst symphony.
His head turned away from the branch in front of him, his eyes dulling as his rage attempted to drag itself to the surface. His breathing grew labored and his face grew flushed. The pop of his opponent cancelling his henge was ignored, his body knowing but his mind fighting against this knowledge. There were too many cooks in the kitchen, too much relevant information coming at him at once that made what was going to happen such a bad combination of issues that he couldn’t be any more ill prepared for what would happen to him. His body naturally cancelled his defensive aura, the chakra wisping away as his opponent slid a blade free to cut him. His body had hunched itself over in pain and disarray. His clenched in pain as choking emotions fought within him. This pain was compounded when three shuriken struck his now exposed and vulnerable skin, lancing new found pain through his body that forced him to look up in the direction that it came from, however upon looking up and seeing his opponent, the dilation of his eyes and the turmoil in his heart over the acceptance and fury in losing this battle had been too much. Swaying, backwards, he collapsed off the branch itself before his opponent had been able to struck him, the young man missing him by mere centimeters as Taiho blacked out. His body fell limp head first towards the unknowable ground below.
He would not know if he was caught, or that he had lost until much later. But thoughts left in his mind when he did wake up would be ones of disappointment and dissatisfaction. He had let his village down without intending to. In his mind, he had failed everyone he knew because of his own mental weakness. Whether or not he would be prepared for the next round or not, time would only tell. But it was clear that Taiho would need help mentally centering himself before he lost himself in a sea of emotions.
