Aikiko

Aikiko's sudden friendly demeanor hat certainly caught the young man off guard he seemed flustered that the young Uchiha was dragging him along without much input on his part. At least she finally had a name, Tasatsuke. He was right that it just wouldn't do if they were questioned so she picked a more appropriate name to give the guards ahead of time. She'd call him a mere servant and have him carry their gear at least for a time. Tasatsuke was complaining about an outfit for himself, this complaint was not responded to but it was noticed. She did giggle at the thought of someone listening to her conversation with Tasatsuke. “They're all terrified of me, they'd rather see me gone I'd think anyways. The sooner the better all together.” Tasatsuke had begun to try to flag her down when they arrived at her estate but was unsuccessful. Aikiko changed into what she more commonly wore for missions, one the guards she'd be “relieving” would recognize her in. Under her black jacket was a white tank top that contrasted her black pants the nondescript clothing was one of the few things she had that lacked her clan's symbol on it. This was a necessary precaution so it would be harder to find people who saw her that night. She wasn't adhering to her signature style that most people would recognize her by. Her pull over hoodie covered her mouth a little bit and she wore her hood drawn her hair framed her grey eyes as she strode back out with the sword she'd retrieved herself sheathed behind her back horizontally able to be easily drawn with her right hand.  As a last thought she grabbed her Iwagakure headband to give to Tasatsuke.

When she came back out the strange young man she'd become acquainted with was standing awkwardly at the threshold. Aikiko had come equipped with ample money and supplies for herself and companion but it was time to get him some clothes to go with the headband. “You should wear my headband so that you can blend in better when we leave. They'll recognize me but not you.” After handing off the headband she'd walk off with her hands in her kangaroo pocket of the hoodie. She paused for moment and turned around “Come on Tasatsuke we dont' have much time to pick out an outfit for you.” The young woman thought for a moment and then walked back to him and grabbed his hand again dragging him off, “Don't take this the wrong way, we'll just blend in better if we look like a couple.” Aikiko dug her nails into his wrist as she dragged him along further and unnecessarily driving home the lack of feeling behind the grasp of her hand. Aikiko would take Tasatsuke to a shop she'd never been to before, she wouldn't risk being recognized. “Hurry up and choose something you like Tasatsuke, I can pay for the whole store if you need me to. We  have to be along to the gate before it closes if we want to make it in time.” The young lady tapped her foot impatiently waiting for him once he was ready she would grab his hand again and drag him off towards the gate they'd “relieve”.

Tasatsuke stood in wait by the front entrance of the Uchiha Manor that was until Aikiko emerged from the homestead. She was dressed in what was clearly mission gear and held an Iwagakure headband tight in her grasp before throwing it to him. She explained that the guards would recognize her as a Iwa shinobi but not him and that he should wear the headband in order to avoid suspicion. Tasatsuke looked down at the headband for a moment before he nodded his head in agreement.

Silently Tasatsuke strapped the foreign headband onto his forehead and tapped the metal protector once. While he was technically a Kumogakure shinobi, Tasatsuke never actually wore the headband from Kumo that was presented to him. The reason being that he never truly felt his loyalties lay with the country itself but moreso the Way of Jashin and the Raikage who had paved a way for Lord Jashin's divine providence.

After he had tied the headband in place and allowed his hands to fall back to his sides, Tasatsuke felt Aikiko's hand grasp his own. The young woman explained her plan to him and Tasatsuke felt his cheek grow flushed as blood filled them and caused him to blush from sheer embarrassment. However, before he could even utter a reply, Tasatsuke felt Aikiko's nails dig into his wrist before she tore off, dragging him behind her once more.

The pair entered some backend shop where Tasatsuke purchased a crimson robe with a white bordering and a pair of black gloves. They were simple, didn't restrict his movements, but unfortunately a tad too big for him. That being said, Tasatsuke knew he didn't have time to waste on being picky, they had to leave Iwagakure and return to Kumogakure. As such, Tasatuke allowed for Aikiko to pay for his new garments before they left the shop and headed towards the gate.

The pair of them would bypass the guards with little trouble and find themselves quickly leaving Stone territory. Tasatsuke sighed a breath of relief and scratched the back of the headband that had been given to him, it had grown tangled in his hair and itched incessantly.

"We have to make haste, they will notice you are missing eventually." Tasatsuke stated calmly to his newfound partner.

After paying for the robe Aikiko would walk towards Tasatsuke and once more grab his hand this time being a bit gentler. He was right though, they should walk a bit quickly it would be odd if Aikiko was late, she's never late if she does choose to show up. Should they be late they'd simply have to walk through the gate as ninja on a “mission”, Aikiko was frequently sent to missions outside the village as were many genin. Hastur's gift to Iwagakure it could be called, his war was surely taking enough of a toll that genin had to do many jobs they normally wouldn't be responsible for. Like killing bandits that are harassing nearby villages. Aikiko had killed before and wouldn't hesitate to kill the guards if she had to. Aikiko had even brought some of her old gate duty summons to cover for the fact that there would surely be another shift as well. Aikiko planned to arrive with Tasatsuke just before the others so they could easily send them home. She'd even pay them for their gate duty. The fatal flaw in this is that she'd be noticed missing in the morning. Aikiko had decided to scrap the plan. “Change of plans.” As the young Uchiha girl spoke she drew the scroll with the orders and flowed her chakra into the pages rearranging the letters to spell out her new plan of diversion. She also slowed their pace a bit, there was no need to rush with their new plan and Aikiko really hated being in a hurry. “We are to tell them we've been tasked with helping one of the hamlets beyond the border. They're always being raided by some bandits or something, honestly I wonder why they don't move closer to shinobi lands if they want to be safer. I mean how many times do these stupid peasants need to be ruined before they get it.”

Aikiko had thought she'd better be less cold to this one. If he were truly the son of Hastur he could be considered near her equal in status. Aikiko's belief that he wasn't an idiotic lowborn child like Ryo made her much more amiable. Aikiko looked around as the pair walked and realized she'd always hated the scenery. Too much rock and dust, not enough color. “What's like there? Are there more trees?” Aikiko didn't even realize how strangely abrupt the question was because it was one of the rare times where her guard was down. Normally everything she did and said had a reason. Aikiko felt she was being a tad bit too friendly and nearly said something mean to compensate but thought twice. She'd never really had a friend, maybe that's why she was always so angry. Aikiko's thoughts had gone so deep she'd not even noticed the sun falling over the mountains. The sun always set early in Iwagakure thanks to the walls and the mountains. It was getting dark fast but luckily they were nearly to the gate. Aikiko realized she'd still been holding Tasatsuke's hand and turning bright red, released it to go greet the guards who'd freshly taken over. Producing the scroll, she walked purposefully towards them. The two genin's faces turned white as she approached, “I have orders beyond the gate. Open it now.” The two genin looked at the scroll, then to each other, back to the scroll, and then at Aikiko before turning back to each other. A back and forth exchange of inaudible speech finished with a nod and one of the boys running off to open the gate for them.

Tasatsuke followed his partner through the ever darkening streets of the township they were in. He had grown accustomed to her gait, the warm feeling of her hand within his own. For the briefest of moments, Tasatsuke wondered that sensation was that nagged in the back of his mind. Something that made him watch the wisps of Aikiko's grey hair as she guided him to their destination.

That was until a dull ache panged to life in the base of his skull, Tasatsuke winced in reply but didn't allow his pace to falter. Instead a small whimper, one that likely wouldn't be heard above the ruckus caused by the shops and stalls as they prepared to close for the evening, escaped his lips. The cruel words of the Jashin Priesthood echoed in his mind, it reminded him that those outside of the Way were simply pawns, tools to be used to advance the Will of Jashin; nothing more and nothing less.

With the headache fading as quickly as it was born, Tasatsuke found himself able to refocus on Aikiko's words. Her pace slowed as she explained to him her new plan, Tasatsuke shook his head one time furiously to the left in response to the final pulsing pang of agony as he attempted to listen. Finally, the headache faded from his mind and he gazed back at Aikiko with the viewpoint of a proper Jashinist, she was a tool, a beautiful yet expendable tool. Wordlessly, Tasatsuke agreed with her plan and he nodded his head once at her.

However, as the walked together hand in hand, Tasatsuke would be forced to speak once more. Aikiko asked about the landscape of Kaminari no Kuni, she wanted to know if it was different then that of Tsuchi no Kuni. In truth there were subtle differences, Kaminari no Kuni wasn't as monotone and did have more life and color in it's wilds but they were both landscapes dominated by massive mountains.

"Kaminari has rivers, forests, and lakes..." Tasatsuke replied. "...but it too is dominated by it's mountains." He continued. "So there are differences and similarities." He explained flatly.

As the pair came close to the gate, Aikiko would realize her hand was still gripping Tasatsuke's own and the woman would release it with the same expression Tasatsuke had taken when she first snatched it up. The young man wouldn't approach the gates with Aikiko, instead he would simply allow her to deal with the gate guards, lest they somehow sense something was off about him. After a brief and nerve-wrecking delay the two Genin guards allowed Aikiko and Tasatsuke to pass through and begin on their "mission".

Tasatsuke felt a sudden tailwind pick up and push him forward as he stepped from the gates and onto the path home. It was as if Jashin himself were pushing his young disciple back to where he belonged. A small comforted smile appeared on Tasatsuke's lips as he allowed the small gale to press him onward.

"Praise be to him, praise be to Lord Jashin." He thought to himself as they journeyed towards Kaminari no Kuni, back to the Raikage.

Tasatsuke’s reply had Aikiko excited and she was ready to see this new country. Aikiko felt happy, a truly odd sensation was filling her as well. Was this what fun felt like? Aikiko realized for a moment she’d never truly been a child. Her entire life was dedicated to her clan and her duty. This was the only unpredictable thing she’d done in her life. Her prodigious nature was not exception it was always expected. Failure was met harshly in her home and in her lifestyle. Had Aikiko not been the best she’d have been quickly cast aside for the next generation. It was her duty to exceed expectation. It was all she’d ever known. Aikiko took Tasatsuke’s hand again, the illusion would have to be kept up until they were out of sight. She led him across the threshold of the gates and walked on not even turning back to look at her birthplace and home. She felt like a burden had been lifted from her shoulders the second she crossed that threshold. For the first time in her life the only duty she had was her own. She looked to her companion for a moment and opened her mouth to speak, but found that the words stuck in her throat. A few moments of awkward silence would pass before she meekly said, “Thank you.”

While Tasatsuke would not know this, those were momentous words to hear from Aikiko, in fact she could count on one hand the number of people she’s said that phrase to. It’s not that she was impolite it’s that she was rarely grateful instead opting to bow in thanks to servants and most others. She subconsciously gave his hand a squeeze as she led him on at a leisurely pace. It was a good while before they were out of view of the guards but by then Aikiko had forgotten, they had been holding hands for so long it was less of a conscious effort and more of just something she was doing.  When Aikiko realized what she was still doing it she again turned bright red and pulled her hood over face to hide her shame.  When she emerged she was back to her usual self, cold and expressionless.

“So, did you really mean it when you promised you’d tell Hastur about me? What’s it like having to follow so much structure. I was allowed to pick and choose what orders I’d follow. I know it won’t be the case there. But how do you manage having to do everything the village asks? I suppose with the knowledge that your orders aren’t pointless it’s easier. Is it weird that I don’t feel bad about leaving?” Aikiko was speaking as the thoughts appeared in her mind. It felt … strange. She was not normally so comfortable around people. Aikiko sped up after her speech putting some distance between the pair, she didn’t like feeling so comfortable.

The journey would take a few weeks, they had to cross their world to reach the Cloud Village after all. Aikiko had never genuinely liked someone before so it was another pleasant new change of pace for her. It was probably his quiet nature that made it easy for her. She didn’t have to talk to him if she didn’t want to talk since she usually led the discussions. By the time the pair would reach the Cloud Country Tasatsuke would have learned much about her. Aikiko shared much with the young man through her sporadic bursts of conversation, more than she’d normally share with someone. But the more she talked the more comfortable she felt. It was odd and new to her to feel comfortable around someone.  By the end of their journey Aikiko felt she had finally made her first friend. The future was unclear but for now the Lightning Country awaited.

Exit.

Tasatsuke felt Aikiko's hand grasp his own again as the tailwind pushed them onward. His face turned brilliant red once more as embarrassment flushed through his body once more. That being said, Tasatsuke understood and attempted to maintain the illusion they had created. Which was a couple who were also being dispatched on some foreign mission at the same time.

As the pair walked down the dusty road, Tasatsuke was caught off guard once more by Aikiko's gratefulness. While he didn't know much about his traveling partner, he had figured she wasn't one to express gratitude like that. This caused Tasatsuke to tilt his head slightly in bewilderment before he gave her a nod. "You are welcome."

It was after her reply that Aikiko quickly withdrew her hand from Tasatsuke's and drew up the hood of her jacket. Tasatsuke smirked internally at this action, it made her embarrassment even more painfully clear. However after a few moments, Aikiko dropped the hood back and was back to her steely expression. This impressed Tasatsuke, she was able to mask her emotions extremely well even if the occasional slip up came through.

It was less then a second after she drew her hood down that Aikiko's new stream of questions spilled forth. Tasatsuke arched an eyebrow at his companion as she asked her set of questions. He took a moment to process all that she had asked him before he finally gave his reply.

"If I make a promise to someone, I keep it." Tasatsuke stated, his voice almost sounded insulted by that question. "The structure is liberating." Tasatsuke replied. "It gives you clear perimeters while on missions and makes the objectives far more easy to accomplish." He continued. "As for the pressure of my responsibility to the village?" He asked rhetorically. "It does not exist. I am not loyal to Kumogakure, I am loyal to the Raikage and the Raikage alone." He stated. "As all Kumogakure Shinobi are." He continued. "Hastur's word and will are law, we serve to accomplish them both." Tasatsuke explained further. "But you are right, that knowledge does make accomplishing whatever orders I am given far easier to accomplish."

While Tasatsuke was able to answer most of Aikiko's questions rather easily, it was her final one that was more difficult. Tasatsuke couldn't really answer it because he never knew his true home nor did he feel loyalty towards the village of Kumogakure. These aspects that affected Aikiko's life and upbringing were foreign concepts to him.

"I-I-I'm not sure." He replied truthfully.

While something within him pushed Tasatsuke to share his past with Aikiko but he refrained. At the mere thought of opening up to her Tasatsuke was reminded of his headache and the words of the Jashin priesthood. As such, he maintained his walls and spoke nothing of his own history out of fear of the pain it would cause.

Over the next several weeks Tasatsuke and Aikiko traveled to the other side of the shinobi world. While Aikiko shared many things about herself, Tasatsuke however maintained his stoic silence on his past but did express interest in what Aikiko told him. Mentally the young man wondered where the tracker shinobi from Iwagakure were or if they had even become aware of Aikiko's treachery yet. Despite his internally distress, Tasatsuke and Aikiko encountered slim to no road blocks or hostilities during their journies. Additionally, while Tasatsuke attempted to keep Aikiko at a distance internally by the time the pair had arrived at Kumogakure, his head panged. Aikiko had truly become a friend to the young boy and for some reason his head was punishing him for it.

Regardless, upon their arrival to Kumogakure Tasatsuke showed Aikiko to the room she would be staying in until a proper home could be assigned to her. After this, he left his new comrade to return to the Way of Jashin temple in order to rest and prepare his report to Lord Hastur. It had been quite the interesting journey and Tasatsuke had potentially procured quite the asset for his father, an Uchiha of his very own.
