drawing on my fine command of language, i said nothing.

A cool evening had befallen the dilapidated Land of Wind. Chilly winds kissed the sand like gentle strokes of a brush across canvas, gentle yet consistent enough to leave tatters of cloth in a constant state of motion as they clung to the decrepit ruins of a settlement forgotten by time. Scavengers had long since picked the remains clean, plucking away every spoil that the surface had to offer. Yet something lurked beneath the sands, boasting no value to the typical scavenger but remarkable usefulness for an entire nation’s efforts against another.

The forces of Iwagakure were active and bustling beneath the ruins of Sakuikoi, utilizing extensive tunnels carved deep into sandstone and rock to disguise their efforts against the Land of Lightning. The mesa was shaped like a crescent, with the entrance of the base on the opposite end of the thin opening that leads into the desert. The mountain surrounding it were tall and their faces brittle like shale, which made scaling its surface a toilsome task. It was an ideal location for an ambush and Takao was sure that whoever approached would realize it immediately. Acting as a secondary relay base for sensitive information on the bolstering war efforts, the constituents had done their best to hide away from prying eyes, yet they had not quite succeeded. Their location may have been leaked to one of Kumogakure’s own bases of operation by what the operatives stationed there had assumed was one of their own. This assumed Kumogakure agent spoke of a base hidden within the footholds of a mesa that hosted an old ruin. It didn’t take long for intelligence operatives to narrow down the location, and thus dispatch a force to destroy it. But both sides were being played like a fiddle.

This scenario had been his doing from the beginning. Nearly a week of planning and manipulation had lead to the culmination of his efforts. He had impersonated an Iwagakure shinobi and spearheaded the construction of the base within the strategic bottleneck. Thus, he had set the stage to reveal its very location to Kumogakure, and lure out whatever shinobi they deemed capable of dealing with the base. Any shinobi that they deemed capable of eradicating the base had a chance of possessing the small nuggets of information he sought. Even if he didn’t succeed in his attempts and Kumogakure succeeded in destroying the relay base, Takao would still benefit from Iwagakure’s loss of resource and manpower.

Takao lingered within the darkness of a shallow cavern in the surface of the mesa; the low sun had cast a shroud of long shadows over the mountain face, cloaking the many small caverns and dips in the brittle stone. The black cloak draped over his shoulders aided in the effort of remaining unseen and unheard, whilst his armour-clad torso jammed low end sensory techniques that might have searched for a trace of chakra. Aibāningu had been flickering on and off in strategically calculated intervals, scanning the horizon for approaching shinobi. The reflective tint of his mask kept the shimmering glow of his smoldering gaze from prying eyes, ensuring that his own manner of sensory did not give off his position. The night would shroud the vast deserts of Kaze no Kuni before long, and the warm glow of evening would fade into the cool tones of twilight. It would benefit him more for his prospective targets to appear after the sun had set, but he was prepared regardless. One last check of the blade housed on his arm and a quick visual inventory of his shinobi equipment marked the reassurance of his preparedness, thus the only thing left to do was wait.

Times in Sunagakure were hard, even for the generally well organised Kumo-nin. That much became clear when Mizuki was summoned for an S-rank mission. Investigating a hidden base holding sensitive information, possibly compromised. Not a mission to be taken lightly. In fact, not one she had agreed to without sharing her thoughts on the matter. She was a special jounin and thus technically not qualified for such a job. Yet Administration set their foot down and were not willing to budge even a single inch on the matter. She was to accept that mission, believing that she'd be just fine considering she had travelled the world in name of Hastur as a chuunin, struggled through the assault on Sunagakure and had lived. Hardly a mission she personally considered S-rank worthy but the kunoichi had little means to counter the facts thrown on the table since it wasn't the first time she had been doing missions above her rank. Granted, there had always been a chaperone perfectly able to keep her safe but that detail seemed to deliberately be disregarded now.

Understanding that there was no point in debating their decision much longer, Mizuki bowed and agreed to undertake the mission before she left for her personal tent. Good preparation for this mission would be of the utmost importance, but the main reason for her visit was mostly for a peculiar attire she had taken along that once had belonged to her father. The tailor had adjusted the length to her own size several month ago, making it so it fit her shorter posture, but even then one would easily believe its wearer to be male rather than female. Her father had never explained his reasons for keeping it around, nor had she ever seen him wear it. Mizuki had suspected it to be his ANBU outfit but the old man had never mentioned himself to be an ANBU. In fact, he had always opposed the idea of being one as it didn't fit the proper guardian he aimed to be - a guard had to be seen so he could draw the attention away from his protegee. The mask that went with that attire was a typical samurai's war mask. It depicted a demon with the intention to instil fear in the hearts of the samurai's opponent. An akuma on the battlefield. It would make the perfect outfit to pass as a Kumogakure ANBU and take on the role of a hidden strike force rather than the diplomat she generally was.

Changing into these clothes and donning the mask, the whole set fit perfectly. Under the attire she would wear her trusted body armour in protection of herself, her trusted katana 'Seiun' resting against her hips and ready to be drawn at a moments notice, while her longbow 'Artemis' and her quiver of arrows would be worn on her back. Taking one last look in the tall standing mirror before she left, she could see the imposing figure she had become despite the nervous feeling which crawled under her skin, tingling. Was she ready for this? Not really. But duty called and she'd answer. As such, 'Suzume', meaning sparrow, would join this mission today. Not much of an imposing name for someone supposed to be intimidating but the name inched more towards the embodiment of 'white lightning' moving through the battlefield rather than brute strength anyway. Under the command of the ANBU Myrddin, who was informed of her addition to the team for protective purpose, she would follow him along the road to this designated place.

The young shinobi was just about to lay down for some rest when he was asked to report to the deployment tent of the Kumogakure border camp, "not even back an hour and already thrown into another assignment." The boy said in a low grumble to himself as he headed for what he knew to be his next assignment, with a heavy sigh he opened the deployment tent and stepped inside. "Ah, Myrddin. I need you to take care of a matter for us, it seems that Iwa has set up a base that is dangerously close to our territory. We can not allow this base to stand as it could open up problems for us in the future. You are to lead a small strike force under the cover of night, destroy this base and report back with any information you and your squad acquires." The man said as the boy entered the tent. The man was standing over a table which held a map of the land of wind, marked with different bases and routes that were spread out across the land. "How did they get there without drawing our attention sooner?" The boy questioned as he looked upon the map to see the location of his target. "The information we have is incomplete it was reported to one of our forward bases by a scout, however it would seem that the scout redeployed as no one has seen him since his initial report. You are scheduled to rendezvous with your team here," the man added as he pointed to a marked location on the map. With a nod the young shinobi turned to headout of the tent to ready himself for his mission, however the man would have a few more words to say. "I think it goes without saying that if your operation fails and you or any of your squad is captured there can be no trace to lead it back to the hidden clouds. This mission is off the books, is that understood?" The young shinobi tightened his fist, yet controlled himself enough that the man would not notice, it was just like the hidden cloud to want nothing to do with something that could be considered bad publicity in the eyes of the other nations. The boy nodded once more before leaving the tent, heading for the rendezvous point to meet with the others going on the mission.

The sun was still high in the sky when the boy made it to the rendezvous point to await his team, causing the boy to wonder if he would have time for a quick nap before the start of his mission later that night. However thoughts of sleep were pushed from his mind the more he thought about the mission, there was something unsettling about the whole ordeal but the boy just could not place his finger on it aside from the fact that it was like all the other dark missions he had been sent on since his arrival here in the land of wind. The only difference was the fact that there would be others with him, this did not sit well with the boy as he preferred to work alone especially on dark missions such as this. However orders were orders and he knew better than to try and question them, considering the last time he had done so earned him three weeks of sixteen hour patrol duties. Something that he was not about to let happen to himself again. The boy had binoculars trained on the position of the mysterious base still in the distance as he waited, questions still running through his mind wondering how Iwa got so close to their territory without any notice as well as hundreds of other questions. As the sun began to set the boy put away his binoculars and placed his mask on his face, unlike the normal Anbu masks of Kumogakure the boy's mask was the visage of the Owl in a style of his own creation. The visage of the Owl was not meant to be feared, at least not when the boy first designed it. The young shinobi meant it to be a guardian of the night, the silent watcher of the village hidden in the clouds, however in the land of wind the visage of the owl held a very different and darker meaning. There were not many that had seen the Owl, at least not that lived, those that survived spoke only of the pure destruction left by the Owl and the lives it had claimed.

Once the others finally arrived at the rendezvous they could finally begin, "alright we all know our assignment let's get it done and over with." The boy stated, his voice distorted by his mask to sound like the voice of a young Suna refugee he had helped earlier that week. Without so much as another word, or waiting for confirmation from the other three the young shinobi turned and began heading for the base the four were set to destroy. Moving under the cover of the night sky would increase their chances of not being seen, however it would not totally hide them. As the four drew nearer to the mesa the boy would slow his pace, not by much but enough that he would be able to stop if he suddenly needed to find cover. The closer the group got to the mesa the more the unsettling feeling in the pit of the boy's stomach grew, something was not right about the situation but he could not put his finger on it.

you look like a SNAKE

Late evening had finally set upon the field in which they would do battle. The shadows were at their longest before the chilled grasps of night would overtake the desert, and the air had grown stagnant. A more spiritually attuned being might have felt a lingering sensation of discomfort in the air-- the kind of calm before the storm feeling that normal folks would shrug off, yet observant shinobi might pick up on. There was no real discernable rhyme or reason to it, just an odd feeling in the breeze that kept a careful shinobi on their toes. It was practically a given, considering the circumstances that brought them together.

Before night had taken hold of the desert, his quarries had arrived. Four of them, each wearing masks of varying description, yet he only needed one of them alive. His cup runneth over with choice. One out of the three was decorated ornately, with flashy robes and a mask that drew his attention. He considered the notion that perhaps this was intentional, as though they were some scapegoat for the others and it was intended to draw his attention. He shelved the possibility to be referenced later and observed them for a moment longer. The helmed shinobi noted their slowing pace, perhaps marking reluctance to enter a disadvantageous arena. That supposed reluctance gave him a much better idea than a simple once-over of their appearance ever could. Beyond preventing an easy escape, it didn’t host many advantages for himself either, thus the exact point in which they engaged didn’t truly matter.

He raised his hands and formed a single hand seal. More chakra spilled forth from his body, using it as a mould to create a perfect copy of himself from head to foot. He split his chakra and bestow the imitation with half of his energy, and presented it with sentience. More chakra leaked from his hand, enshrouding it with the magical essence, before the clone’s hands rose and formed a sequence of seals itself. The very light around it bent and folded to the clone’s will, and it disappeared from Takao’s sight. As Takao himself leaped down from the recess in the wall, the clone followed, and followed along in Takao’s footsteps. Whilst he walked, the masked shinobi’s hands came together and formed a brief sequence of three hand seals, and allowed for his chakra to leak out and wash over his skin like waves cresting over a beach. The chakra hardened and blackened into scales hidden beneath his clothing and mask.

Takao’s saunter took in out of the crescent mesa and into the open desert, a much more preferable arena for his manner of fighting. His gaze settled on the four figures as they approached from the distance, his presence bore to them in its entirety, ensuring that he would not go unnoticed.

“Foreign scum,” Takao called out, his voice booming although distorted as it passed through the rebreather of his mask. “You are trespassing on official Iwagakure operations. Turn around now, or face the consequences!”

The squad of four would halt and watch for a moment, assessing the situation. The crescent mesa was quiet. Too quiet. The sort of quietude that could only be followed by a sudden explosion of chaos. The sort the Lady of Storms knew well. But to pinpoint the origin of this tension was a different story as it wasn't hers, the common feeling shared by every person known and unknown currently present almost palpable. What was going on, exactly? Had they already been spotted and were people waiting to see who would move first? No matter. The one known as Myrddin would speak up, indicating to move on with the task at hand. He'd instantly move after he had spoken, and Suzume would follow him closely as she believed it was better to always be with two at least, matter of having each other's back. Their mission being the destruction of this base, she wondered how to go about this. She had a couple of lethal techniques at her disposal but nothing of the sort that could blow up a base or even a section of it. Nothing explosive or intended for mass destruction as she was more of a duellist than a saboteur.

Their stealth infiltration would be discovered soon, a man standing out in the open rather than in the base. Depending on the alertness of the Iwa-nin inside, the group could potentially be caught between to sides - a tactical disadvantage. But what bothered Suzume most of all was the fact that they had not spotted the man on patrol when they just came to pass the open of the desert. Without any stealth techniques, he would not have been able to hide his presence. She was off a mind herself that sending in two members of the team to finish the job while leaving two others to occupy this man might not be the worst of options but the scales and the draconian appearance he had taken on told her he was expecting them to engage him. Much like her own outfit intended to draw attention, his preparations reeked of a trap. But did they have any other choice though?

"He's expecting us, Myrddin. Your call?"

The unsettling feeling that something was wrong about the whole situation revealed itself when a lone man exited the entrance of the Mesa. The man's words rang across the open desert to the group, his words suggested that he was challenging them. It was obvious that he must of been a look out or some how sensed their approach to have been able to find them in the dark of the night, but everything about the situation began screaming to the young Anbu that something was amiss. If he had been a look out for this base why was it just him coming out as the welcoming committee, why had he not alerted the rest of the base and a full platoon sent to stop them. Unless of course he had, was it possible that this man was meant to be a distraction while the rest of them got into position or was there something much darker than the night at work here. Thoughts raced through the boy's mind until his train of thought was interrupted by the woman known as Suzume, the boy was not use to being in this sort of situation. Being in command was not something the boy enjoyed or did often, something that the other anbu caught up on by his hesitation. "We don't have time for this, the man is going to alert the whole based to our presence if he has not already." One of the Anbu stated as he formed a quick string of handseals, "there is no chakra presence. He is alone we must strike now." The two Anbu took off towards the man before Myrddin could even think of objecting, but it was then that it hit the young Anbu that there would not be a chakra signature if the man and if he had a team his team were Anbu as well. "This doesn't feel right," the boy said aloud though it was mostly to himself as he began flowing his chakra into the air around him, they may be able to hide their chakra but not their movements the boy thought to himself as he extended his range of his wind sense to the maximum. The boy had been right it was not just the man but another presence there with him, hidden some how from sight but there was no hiding the disturbance the person was creating through the air. "It's a trap, there's more than one." The boy called out but the Anbu were either to far ahead to hear him or simply ignored his warning as they did not stop their advancement onto the man. "We have to help them," the boy said to Suzume before taking off after the two Anbu.

The two Anbu were faster than the boy and already had a sizeable lead in their advancement, they would be upon the man in a matter of seconds but the boy would not let that stop him from moving as fast as he could. As he moved he began channelling his chakra through his body and to his core, there would be a fight and he had to ensure to be at his best or he would fall. He was still on alert for any other movement that might give away the position of other potential threats but his main focus was on that of the two that the other Anbu were unknowingly about to engage. In the pale moon light the boy saw a flood of water spew forth from one of the Anbu, followed quickly by a flash of light from the second. The boy was not close enough to aid in their attack and could only hope that they could handle the man and his hidden comrade, or at least not fall before he reached them.

”Very well.”

There was something about the four that Takao immediately recognized as weakness. They did not act as a unit, nor were their actions committed with synergy of one another. Beneath the mask that flawlessly shrouded his visage, a wicked smile grew. Two of the four charged despite the warnings of the third, and unleashed a myriad of multi-elemented attacks upon his person. Unhindered by any outside force, the pops and crackles of Burning Ambition were lit aflame at his back. He jumped and maneuvered around the crashing waves of water with minimal effort, and utilized practiced and well-placed jets of flame to propel himself up and around the flash of lightning that soared past him and slammed into the fragile mesa. As Takao lingered above them in the air, his body flipped legs-over-head and a deep inhale flooded his lungs with air and chakra.

Within a mere second of leaping over their techniques and the ANBU operatives themselves, Takao exhaled a tsunami of flame over their heads, barreling down upon them with less than a second before the swathe of fire washed over the sands. Twenty meters of high-pressure flames threatened the pair with an instant and painless death should it collide with them, and time to react was certainly against them. The same crackling jets of flame began to manifest behind his shoulders, preparing for another burst of movement.

Having heard one of the quartet’s declaration that telegraphed his realization that Takao was not alone, the clone decided to act rather than wait idly by. He had two targets to strike that were unoccupied by the original, and thus he chose the one who had not declared that he was alone. Perhaps the one with the conspicuous outfit had no way of seeing him, yet it didn’t matter much if they did in the end, for his choices would be indifferent in either scenario. Unseen and unheard, the clone moved forward from its standing position and rapidly approached Mizuki. When it was within twenty five meters of her, it acted. A huff of breath inhaled and exhaled in rapid succession expelled a large globule of wind release chakra. Even in the evening light, the distorted haze of the technique was visible as it tore across the sands at fifty meters a second, threatening Mizuki with a technique capable of inflicting lethal wounds that appeared from nowhere.

The clone was able to effortlessly exhale the impressively dense mass of oxygen and chakra without so much as skipping a beat, and continued on in its advance toward Mizuki. Still invisible to the naked eye, it kept a safe distance from Mizuki, whose abilities he had yet to witness and analyze firsthand. The clone moved around to her right side and stood at her five o’clock nearly twenty meters away, beginning to encroach on her position as she reacted to the ball of wind.

Whilst the real Takao sustained the jet of flames from his agape maw through the mask’s rebreather, his gaze befell the masked visage of Myrddin. Only he had demonstrated the ability to see the clone, and thus maintaining his attention and keeping him distracted may provide his clone with openings whilst the two were incapable of communicating. Thus, Takao’s left arm withdraw two kunai from the pouch on his left leg and fired them at the Kumogakure shinobi. A pair of tags violently writhed in the wind as the heavy metal blades cut through the air, timing their flight so that one would arrive a second after the other, and both would explode when they came within reach of Myrddin.

Behind the mask of the akuma, Suzume would twitch at the blind recklessness of the two companions rushing in without any proper assessment of the situation. The Lady of Storms, disciplined and seemingly always at the eye of the very storms she represented, was perhaps too cautious considering her diplomatic nature but lacking any proper insight in the abilities of her team mates she felt herself at a disadvantage despite having superior numbers over the man in the distance. That feeling was only confirmed more when Myrddin stated he wasn't alone. One or more others were hidden from sight. Not having had any training as an ANBU or even remotely as a guard worth her salt, the kunoichi ever on the road to maintain relations with other Villages had never needed much more than her own eyes. And that was costing her now at this very moment on top of being dropped into a mission that wasn't quite her niche.

To make matter worse, the two charging shinobi would be opposed by a mass of flames Suzume had yet to experience in life. The ease with which this man used his katon, and the massive amount of flames he could spit forward, along with the speed and reflexes he revealed instantly told her that he was far from a special jounin. It was clear as daylight that this man was a jounin with a healthy dose of expertise. Suzume would feel her hair raise up as the disadvantages on the ANBU team's end only seemed to staple with every passing second.

"Hesitation is the seed of destruction, Mizuki. When you strike, strike without doubt. If you kill, kill with clarity in mind and purpose."

The words of her father's training ringing in her mind would be like the wake-up call she needed to get to action. Forming a Dog hand seal in anticipation of following right after Myrddin, her own defensive measures would take place as her breath allowed a cloud of suiton to cover her body. Channelling the essence of her kenjutsu training as she was about to run after Myrddin, the bare hints of movement would be caught in the corner of her eyes as sand was ploughed up by an invisible force. Still moving toward Myrddin, she'd turn her head to see what was coming in, only to see nothing as the timing of the clone to her spotting the movement of sand was impeccable, halting the sand's back-stabbing revelation while no wind would carry forth his scent. Unfortunately, when he breathed in deeply for his own technique he would also betray his position despite the invisibility as his technique would not cloak his interaction with the loose sand of the world nor his sound.

"One invisibility confirmed.", she'd shout in declaration of the clone's presence before the fuuton technique would stride forward at incredible speed. The sheer power of the technique was terrifying to behold, its fuuton nature apparent and driving Suzume to alter her barrier's nature in response at the whim of her will. Too fast in its advance to do much else, the technique would brutally crash against Suzume's barrier and come to pass without breaking her defences. Not having had the time to alter her directions and frankly not having intending to do so either at first. The distortion of the fuuton jutsu having cloaked the clone's cautious movement, the sand dead still again as it stood still again, Mizuki's eyes had lost track of his presence.

Two kunai would then be thrown in her direction out of the blue at twenty meter distance, the kunai posing no danger to her as they were not backed by sufficient strength to break the still active defences of the masked warrior. However, rather than to linger around and wait for the thrown weapons to hit her or offer the tags the chance to explode right in her face, Mizuki would channel raiton in her feet and burst forward at a 35 m/s. As she shot forward, a set of half-hand seals would follow, right hand resting on her katana and relying on her iaijutsu training to execute a single strike at the clone as she moved forward to his last registered position.

If her counter-offensive would hit the invisible presence, a single strike would suffice to cleave an unprotected individual in twain. If not, she would end 15 meters behind the clone, and proceed with her way direction Myrddin and Takao by circling around their interaction area to end in the visible Takao's flanks. The clone would not be forgotten, however...

A tinge of fear ran through the boy's body at the sight of the actions of the man, not only had this man been able to dodge the Anbu's attacks but incinerated them in the process as well. It was not just the man's action that surprised the boy, but also the speed at which he did it. Even with his wind sense active the boy could not keep up with the man's movement, it was astonishing to the boy to see but at the same time he could not help but feel the fear creeping up upon him. The invisible presence that had been shadowing the man took off from it's position while the man gave breath to the fire in mid air. At first the boy assumed the invisible man or woman was coming towards him, but in fact the movement of it suggested that it was trying to make sure to avoid him. Perhaps the invisible person was trying to flank him from behind while his attention was on that of the man, if that was their plan they would be sorely mistaken. It wasn't until the boy sensed the path of the invisible man was on a direct course with movement behind him that the boy remembered that he was not alone, the woman Suzume was behind him and the invisible assailant was on a collision course with her. Myrddin turned his head so that he could give her warning, but before he formed the words he heard her voice. She was aware of the invisible man, that was a good thing. After the bumble with the two anbu he had thought he had been strapped with a sounder of incompetence, but it seemed that at least one of the sounder was capable of handling herself.

The boy's attention quickly drawn back to the man as he felt the disturbance caused by the man's movement. When he first saw the Kunai his first instinct was to knock them away, however the sight of the paper attached to them quickly changed his mind. The young Anbu leaned backwards to the point that he was balancing on nothing but the heels of his feet, having to only roll his shoulder down in the process to allow both of the Kunai and the paper attach to them pass over him without touching them. As the papers flew by the boy saw ink marks on the paper, his initial thought of them being paper bombs confirmed making the boy glad he dodged them. Had he tried to block them or knocked them away or offered any resistance to their trajectory the would have exploded on impact. With the threat of the paper bombs pass, the boy would twist spinning on his heels in a complete three sixty until he was back upright and facing the man once again. As he twisted the boy pulled his Kaminari Steel windmill shuriken from its holister on his back, opening it in one swift motion in mid turn and launching it with a flick of his wrist at the man in front of him as he finished his spin. The boy began channeling chakra through his body as he began accessing the situation, Suzume was dealing with the invisible man and the man in front of him had already taken out two of his comrades. The man was by far the biggest threat at least for the time being, and after seeing the man dispatch the two Anbu the boy knew he needed to keep the man at a distance. The only problem was that the boy was much better in close quarters than he was at a distance, however since the situation demanded it the boy would simply have to adapt.

Seconds after he had launched his windmill shuriken the boy launched a small series of strikes, a kick followed quickly by two punches that the boy would flow on the wind. These strikes would not only traverse the fifteen meter distance he was from the man at thirty five meters a second, but his projection of wind also allowed him to strike the man from different angles. Because of the speed that the wind carried the strikes, the strikes would reach the man before the shuriken, despite the shuriken having been launched first. The kick would strike the man on his left side, if this strike hit its mark the man would become stunned making it so he could not dodge the punches nor the windmill Shuriken. The first punch would strike the man square in the chest while the second would hit him in the gut, if either one of the punches hit the man they would cause a ripple that would cause the man to be propelled forward straight towards the incoming windmill shuriken.

The boy kept his senses open for any surprises that the man or his invisible comrade might throw at him, as well for any sign that Suzume might need help, ready to react at a seconds notice.

Their communication between one another was paramount to victory, yet still did sow the seed that would be their defeat. Both Takao and his own clone knew that they were both aware of the latter’s presence, which removed any necessity to take special care in hiding and retaining stealth. Of the pair, only the more glamorously dressed seemed to lack the ability to accurately pinpoint the clone’s location, and thus made her the best opponent for it to fight. She may have been able to determine its original location by the sound of his breath, but the intricacies of his movement would largely be lost on her without any means to otherwise track his shrouded movements.

The clone’s reaction to her speed was initially impressed, but not outpaced, nor outmaneuvered. Before the Kumogakure Shinobi had even begun to approach, the clone had started to move, and its actions were twofold. Firstly, it shed its cloak and tossed it out from the protection of Hiding in Camouflage with the intent of drawing Mizuki’s attention to the large, obscure mass of moving cloth that appeared from thin air. Secondly, in the same throwing motion, it ducked under the swing of the blade and spun counterclockwise in her direction. The clone’s leg fanned out and thrust forward, threatening to slam into her midsection and stop her advance even if the strike did not transfer damage. Simultaneous with the kick, the breath within the clone’s lungs was inhaled, and with the oxygen that was exhaled came the burning imagery of a Chinese dragon’s head bathed in flames. It shot forth toward Mizuki from nearly point-blank range, and spanned a distance of 5-meters wide by 8-meters long.

The clone’s gaze drifted sidelong to the battle of its original counterpart, if only to keep track of the happenings of the battlefield. Myrddin’s evasive maneuver was skilled in dodging the blades, and had it not been for Takao timing the explosions to arrive when they were within range, he would have avoided their wrath entirely. Unfortunately for Myrddin however, Takao had timed his explosive tags. The distance between the two had been calculated and the timing of the tags was mere academy-level mathematics disguised as gut experience. The pair of tags exploded within a second’s succession of one another as they passed above Myrddin, threatening inadequately defended skin and muscle with second-degree burns and notable impact.

The flames vomited from Takao’s agape maw were no longer fed by his chakra, and had adequately reduced the pair of Kumogakure ANBU down into a fine ash the very instant the unfortunate souls came within range. With his sights now set fully on Myrddin, Takao offered the man no reprieve, and moved quickly to intercept any further action following the recovery from the explosive tags. Jets of flame manifested and erupted behind Takao’s body, allowing him to move through the air with impressive, yet-to-be matched speed. He traversed the negligible distance between himself and Myrddin with inexorable haste, and raised his right leg up high from a mere four meters above the Kumogakure ANBU. Another pair of jets forced his body downward and threw him into rapid descent onto Myrddin, endangering him with a powerful ax-kick styled strike to the cluster of nerves front and center in the abdomen; the celiac plexus. Secondary jets were prepared in the palms of his hands, prepared to maneuver himself if needed, yet pressurized force had not yet been added to the flames as they merely remained idle.

Her opponent was learning. Throwing in his cloak to distract her. He already had the advantage of invisibility, basically ignored by the kunoichi relying on her other senses instead, but the cloak's size was sufficient to hide the sand that betrayed his general movement. Mizuki would not be brought to doubt, proceeding with her raiton strike only to realise that she had been slicing through thin air. Peculiar noise from sand shifting and wind being pushed aside from a body would be picked up too late to register the movement of an incoming kick, finding the invisible force slamming its legs against the suiton barrier that coated her. The impact backed with quite some strength, Mizuki would be knocked back across the sand, feet sliding over countless grains before she eventually halted after a couple of meters. Before being able to retaliate or reorient, flames would crash against her ranton barrier and consume the last bits of her bastion.

As the clone did not move, unknowingly distracted by the battle between Myrddin and Takao, Mizuki formed another set of hand seals. Katon, fuuton. Those had been the only elements so far she had taken note of and so a stronger version of her previous technique would take place. All the while it started to dawn to Mizuki how much effort the two seemed to take to hold Myrddin and Mizuki separated. Was the man wielding the flames of a dragon scared of dealing with the two of them? If he was a shinobi of Iwa, why was he toying with the ANBU rather than seeking reinforcements? Something felt off about this whole fight, but she couldn't put a finger on it.

However, since no further movement from the clone had been registered, Mizuki would once again make use of the same technique she had been using before, his breathing betraying his actual position at this short a distance. Standing at a 2m distance, she'd run forward, her speed enhanced by the raiton chakra and swipe her katana where had stood to spit his fire, striking at what would be his mid-riff. This time forcing him to step out of the wide swing of her strike if he didn't want end up cut in two. Not only would further movement allow her to keep track of him as his feet impacted the sand underneath, but the path ahead to the visible Takao would allow her to move on with her enhanced speed. If they intended to keep them separated, it would be her goal to break through.

Furthermore, she'd form another set of hand seals which would cloak a 5m radius in a thick layer of dark thunder clouds. If the clone and Takao would remain in its range, lighting would viciously lash at them since Mizuki was well aware of both their presences on the battlefield. If the clone would find himself within the clouds, his prison would be two-fold: his sight would be limited by the clouds thus offering Mizuki an easier way to move forward but he would also betray his presence even easier as the cloud and sand would swirl to make room for his mass, allowing the cloud to shoot him down even easier considering the minimal range between him and the clouds.

The force of the duo of explosions had knocked one of his two targets unconscious after a poorly timed evasion attempt resulted in their detonation less than a meter away. More so than that, the kick he had planned landed true as well, and ensured that his consciousness had been thoroughly stripped, leaving him laying stiff and motionless in the sand. Three of the four that would assault the empty base he used as bait for the Kumogakure shinobi had been dealt with, leaving only one to remain. This one had been the most problematic at all, demonstrating a unique repertoire of techniques that he hadn’t many means to counter on surface level. His clone had been utilizing the wind element alone thus far to differentiate the pair, so that if they did have a means of comparing the two, be it by sensory or simple cognitive thought, it would be difficult to discover that he was merely a clone.

For now, the clone must remain in order to preoccupy his masked assailant whilst the Kumogakure Operative was transported elsewhere for interrogation. With ease, Takao hefted the unconscious boy over his shoulder and jets of volatile flame erupted from his back. With practiced grace, the scale-clad shinobi temporarily retreated from their battle, just in time to evacuate the area that would be overwhelmed by the basin of clouds. The speed in which he travelled across the desert made a mockery of distance, and in mere seconds, he had arrived at the rendezvous point set for his Root Operatives to meet at.

When he came to a halt, he was greeted by three men in plain masks and black robes with matching clothes underneath.

“Commander,” one greeted him. Takao set the unconscious body of Raphael down and addressed the pair hastily.

“Bind this one and heal his wounds. Make sure he can’t use hand seals and take him back to the operation headquarters. Keep a barrier around him at all times and leave him for me.” Takao ordered coldly.

“Understood. Do you require backup?”

“No,” Takao answered.

“Do as instructed, report to Nijū, and wait for redeployment orders. Dismissed.”

The three operatives disappeared with Raphael in tow, carrying out the orders Takao had given them. More jets of flame manifested behind him and he shot forward across the sands, leaving plumes of the burning granules rocketing into the air each time the soles of his boots collided with the ground. As quick as he had disappeared, Takao returned to the battle, stood upon the fragile mesa, looking down at the battle that erupted beneath.

While he was gone, his clone had acted. Mizuki had brought her hands together to cast her technique and the clone had reacted aptly to the assault set upon him. Before she had even done so, the clone was already putting distance between them. His own repertoire of techniques had run low, and the mental orders he had been given prior to creation rang loud in his head. No fire techniques. Without that vast arsenal of techniques at its disposal, the clone was limited to the scarce wind techniques dotted throughout his collection, and underhanded tactics that had not worked perfectly thus far. Encouraging his opponent to drain their chakra seemed like a good alternative, especially after determining that he could perhaps bait reactions upon realizing that she was locating him based on the sound of his breath. Thus, as Mizuki cast her technique and the clouds rolled forth, Takao’s clone continued on its way until the range of the technique halted and he was safe from its wrath. He made no act of retaliation and merely watched, observed, and learned.

Takao, the original, leapt from the mesa and landed in the sands with a heavy thud. His cold gaze stared forth, seeing the blurs of movement through the clouds, and his brows furrowed. He needn’t see more through them, and had many an avenue around the clouds, yet allowed them to persist for the time being, and instead chose to speak.

“Three of your comrades are dead now,” He said, his voice still heavily distorted by the mask obscuring his face.

“Was it worth it, shinobi of the Hidden Cloud? Launching your assault on this base which had done nothing against you? Was it worth acting on the orders of a lunatic to slay innocent people?” There was force in his words now as he stood twenty meters from the edge of the clouds, his eyes staring in, watching for the smallest hints of movement behind the chakra.

“I’ll give you this opportunity to turn around and walk away. Otherwise, I will make this desert your grave.” As he spoke, the blade on his right arm slid from its housing, and the clone repositioned itself gradually to her right side, maintaining an equal distance from the clouds as Takao.

“The choice is yours.”

From within the brooding thunder clouds, the white akuma noticed the man knock out Myrddin yet troubled by her own opponent there was little more she could do than to watch helplessly. That man, whoever he was, had just taken out three of the four members, leaving her by herself to deal with a most annoying presence. On top of that, the invisible presence had moved too fast for the voltaic sparks to fire. Sand being thrown up by its footstep as it moved away, the speed with which he moved didn't go unnoticed. Though his identity remained hidden, she was well aware now that he held a speed superior to her own. Jounin-rank? Even then, the discomforting knot in her stomach told her even a jounin might suffer some trouble dealing with this entity.

Sheathing her katana for the moment knowing that the thunder clouds would provide her a layer of protection, the white akuma observed the current situation. Their brief skirmish had been intense, both parties having failed to inflict any serious damage. She had spotted no blood spilling from the invisible entity, meaning there was a big chance she had not been able to hit it, and she had no real means of knowing how much chakra it had consumed in the process. All she could say was that her opponent was high ranked and using fuuton chakra, whereas Myrddin's opponent was certainly not lesser in his skill and used katon. It was a... curious analysis that coincidentally two beings of possibly approximately equal skill each used a single element only. Like there was a plan or strategy behind, equally shrouded from sight.

Even then, she had to come up with some solution. Though she could do nothing for the two torched men, Myrddin was not lost yet. The man with the dragon scales had taken him away. She wanted to chase him but she knew the invisible ally would not let her pass. Currently she had not succeeded and chances were slim she would. As a special jounin, despite her skill and worldly experience as the Herald of Hastur having travelled across the nation, she didn't quite hold the prowess to deal with jounin of this magnitude just yet. The future wouldn't look any better if Myrddin's opponent returned to assist her own adversary either.

And naturally, such was the case...

The original would speak from behind the mask, which she assumed to be similar in function as that of an ANBU's. Stating that three of her team were dead. The liar. She was well-enough trained in the arts of combat herself to know he had not delivered a killing blow to Myrddin, and dragging him off where he had left the rest to burn up was not quite a way to go about the dead. But rather than to express that knowledge she let him speak his words. After all, if he was anything similar to ANBU, he'd prefer Myrddin alive. Interrogating him, most likely. One could only wonder what information an ANBU carried. Not something Mizuki would know, since she was merely filling in a hole in the team. An unlikely situation  any other day.

Likewise, his little guilt trip to her direction was a pointless matter. They were shinobi. Was it worth to lose men? No. As a person with a heart, not once would Mizuki wish for men to fall dead. Even if she couldn't identify the men she was with, a life was a precious thing. It was just the risk of the job they took. As a shinobi, lives were taken and lives were lost. It didn't matter who was in charge. Their own crazy lunatic of a Raikage, the Sword Saint of Konoha joining the missing-nin to destroy a village, the Ice Demon on her throne with a porcelain mask of kindness. Was there even one of them left humane and sane once they reached that sort of power? Hopefully she'd never find out herself.

"You are right. You are the victor of today's fight, dragon. I'll return home bearing the loss of my team members and consider this mission a failure.", she said, her voice clear and calm. Feminine, as her own mask did not distort her voice. If the chance was given to remain alive and report, live another day to figure out how to retrieve Myrdding, then it was better to take it. Dead shinobi served no purpose. "You can return home with your hypocrisy. For while you are quick to judge the actions of others, I remain aware of the zealous monsters plunging my Village into chaos. Can you say the same about yourself?"

She could scratch him off as being an Iwa-nin. Had he been one of them he would have warned them, brought Myrddin there where more troops could watch over him. Instead he had taken a different direction. He was no Kumo-nin by the words he spoke. True words, as Mizuki had to agree that much since Hastur had not proven himself to care much about the Village's civilians or the refugees that had sought shelter. That left him with either being a Konoha-nin, Suna refugee or Kiri-nin. And two of those laid at the base of the Great Village's destruction, so she had witnessed herself in the past.

Yes, to her, he had no right to point his finger in her direction when Konoha's own reputation had been tarnished by the Sword Saint... and had done nothing to bring him to justice. Konoha had allowed Mitsuo to become part of Kumogakure. And though Sunagakure was nothing different when the Suna-defector betrayed them and aided in the destruction, where they would gladly have found vengeance they no longer had the means to do so.

In the end, the mere choice to become a shinobi and being ordered around by those monstrous powers in station made every shinobi guilty of killing innocents one way or another. But the human race had taught itself to blame another sooner than themselves. It had become their nature.

"We are bound to meet each other again someday, dragon. Until then, enjoy your deserved victory."

From within the storming clouds, her blurred presence would then vanish. The white demon gone, the storm remaining as a reminder of a brooding premonition.

A low, metallic laugh built in his chest and resonated in his throat. It was such a shallow lie that he knew that she knew, but it didn't matter. It could be true in a matter of moments, after all, the comrade that she abandoned so easily would be entirely at his mercy. To her, perhaps, he would enact the most horrible atrocities. Every inch of his flesh would be peeled back, every fiber of his being torn asunder for the secrets that festered within. Such was the nature of the job, after all, it couldn't be helped. This is why the ANBU were taught to destroy themselves if there was a risk of capture.

Of course, that wouldn't happen. Neither the self destruction nor the soulless probing, despite their heinous act of attacking an innocent base, he would provide them the hospitality that they had starved him of despite his benevolent offer at their meeting. He couldn't be too hard on them, he had lured them here for the eventual purpose of kidnapping, after all, but their wanton willingness to do so had certainly put the morality of their people into his question.

"Depends on who you ask," He said, his voice carried through the full face helm with mechanical distortion, mouth curled upward in a lopsided smile.

"But the incessant, desperate griping of a beaten Kumogakure Dog means little to me. Go and run back to your master now, with your tail tucked between your legs, and recount to him the results of crossing the Hidden Stone."

The battle had been won, but he couldn't let the Cloud kunoichi off without a bit of banter, malicious as it was. His disdain for the village in which she claimed allegiance, or perhaps it was merely the leadership and those who had fallen to his side, was clear in his words, his cadence, and his timbre. Anybody who would dare to threaten his home would find similar opinions formed about them.

"Indeed, unfortunate as it is to say, I feel as though fate will bring us together yet again. Pray that you are not alone."

Finally, she departed, and when he confirmed her distance with the glowing embers of Ibugan, he dispelled the clone at his side. The fatigue of the battle hit him twofold and he faltered, however slightly, for a mere moment before recollecting himself. There was work to be done, information to be learned, and a Hidden Cloud shinobi that needed to be released eventually, depending on how the events of the interrogation went.

Drifting across the sands like a lopsided tank, Takao made his way across the blighted desert. Every step of the way, he ensured he wasn't followed, using Ibugan, the chakra sensory method taught to all ANBU, and a keen sense of awareness. Slipping from the visible plane with the usage of chakra when he was close enough and using a technique applied to the underside of his boots, he left no impression in the sand as he proceeded into the makeshift hideout, carved out of stone and partially buried by the sand, practically invisible from the outside looking in.

His shroud of chakra washed away and he stepped out of nothingness, his footsteps completely silent, as he approached the operatives of his coalition.

"Condition," He asked simply.

"Stable. Wounds have been healed, slipping in and out of consciousness, but he should be waking up any minute now." The hooded, maked operative said, and Takao nodded.

"His effects?"

"Collected and stored in this scroll," The man said, handing Takao the rolled parchment.

"Standard equipment for his rank. Kumogakure ANBU regalia, weaponry made from the Skyforge, and other mass-produced equipment not worth mentioning. Standard issue ANBU weapon as well."

Nodding again, Takao proceeded inward into the dimly lit cave, his eyes quickly adjusting to the darkness. He tucked the scroll away under his cloak and into one of the empty pouches of his vest, for now.

"Prepare to mobilize within the hour," Takao said as he stepped through a carved archway into a large room where four operatives, knelt in a circle, maintained a shimmering purple barrier. Within it, seated, hands bound apart from one another and legs secured, was his Hidden Cloud captive.

"This will not take long."

Relenting their hold on the barrier for only an instant, Takao slipped inside, shrouding himself with a veil of chakra for his own protection. Every bit of caution he could take, he would do so. Shinobi, as previously mentioned, were treasure troves of secrets. Secrets that could be both used in his favour and against, and given all of the preparations, he would not be taken by surprise so easily. Chair in hand, Takao seated himself behind Myrddin, give or take two meters. He turned the back to face Myrddin and sat backward, facing the shinobi, his arms folded over the back of the chair.

"Let's get started, shall we?"
