This one hadn't been easy. Sure easy was a relative term when dealing with murderous sociopaths. But the Kabuki killer was in a league of his own. The madman had been infiltrating theatre performances all across Kiri as part of some form of sick vendetta and then murdering the players. The man was clearly a creditable thespian with disguise skills that put even ninja's to shame. Even more impressive was the fact that he had done it without the use of ninjutsu or any other chakra based artes.

Di and Kirei had tried a number of tactics to get a-hold of this elusive murderer but he proved slimy as an eel and cunning as a fox. From getting theatre troupes to hold impromptu performances as bait to Kirei and Di dressing as actors themselves nothing had worked. Realising that he was being pursued across Kiri the killer began to leave gloating messages taunting the pair of crimefighters. These would often contain cryptic hints and even outright misinformation to throw the sleuths off the trail. Some of the more shameless tabloids started to make connections between these murders and the Yatagarasu case. Di dismissed this almost immediately.

While Yatagarasu was also operating in the same general area their kills were tied to past crimes. The kabuki killer seemed to simply desire the murder of mummers based around whatever took his fancy. Di was pretty sure that the Kabuki killer was a male as womens kabuki was a much more underground affair and all of the targets had been prominent actors. Di was beginning to despair that he would never get a proper lead on the culrpit when help came from the strangest of sources.

Kirei's dog, Yuji had been sniffing around a crime scene when he had come across the burned casing of a firework. The Kabuki killer had used this method to escape the stage after slaughtering a fellow actor in during a performance of 'Treasury of Loyal Retainers'. Firmly grasping the trail given by the astute canine Di traced the firework back to it's origin and found that it had been made in a factory that had shut down and was now supposedly abandoned.

It was late afternoon when Di and Kirei finally decided to make their move upon the villains hideout. If Di's suspicions were correct they would be able to catch the killer while he was getting ready to perform his deadly work. The street where the factory was located was certianly one of the worse districts of town. Windows were boarded up while buildings bearing  scars from the Seven Bells war were still visible to any observer.

The firework factory loomed tall filled with decaying grandeur. The front entrance was barricaded shut with planks of plywood and bamboo but Di could already count at least two side doors. Motioning to Kirei, Di indicated that the young ninja should ascend the escape exit leading into the second floor while the detective found purchase through one of the side doors on ground level.

The Kabuki Killer was decidedly a much more severe case than the thieves, thugs, and vagabonds to which The Hound usually attended. With prominent performers dropping left and right, it was no surprise that the crime-fighting duo was the first on the list for the actor's union to hire for their case. Already, the pair ascertained that the suspect could not be a ninja, Yuji had been entirely unable to trace a significant chakra signature at the scene of any of the murders. The man they were chasing relied on power drawn from the most ancient of criminal sources: lunacy. With a pair of skilled hands, shrewd planning, and access to wonderous methods of escape, the Kabuki Killer sent shivers down the spines of any who performed in the Mist.

Wandering through the outskirts in the late afternoon gave Kirei perspective on the city's history which he didn't in his usual sphere around the administration building. Dark markings burned deep by unholy fire still scorched the pavement black, and the husks of the builds around served as a testament to the legacy of suffering and bloodshed in the Mist. It gave the boy pause to consider the history of another nation in this way; he already spent some time lying awake at night contemplating the fate of Suna. Since meeting both Nova and Izumi, the two ex-Wind ninjas made him think about the atrocities which happened there, something he'd only heard about as vague news in Konoha. How much of that was the fault of the Land of Fire, and how much was his own father's censorship, Kirei didn't know.

As the sky began to turn orange with the very start of the evening, the duo came to stand before the fireworks factory. Decaying signs once whimsical hung dislodged across boarded up doors. The Hound glanced at his partner, nodding in affirmation and took off in a run for the side of the building. He would reach beneath his cape and pull a shuriken attached to a length of wire and toss it high for the railing on the building's side. After several quick spins around the rail, the cable would serve as Kirei's method to scale into the second-floor window. After beginning his infiltration, Kirei wouldn't spare a second look back towards Di, trusting he would figure his own way around.

The dusty innards made Kirei's nose twitch the moment he emerged into a decrepit hallway. After a few steps, the ambient noise of the distant city faded away entirely, giving way to the utter stillness of the Killer's Lair. The Hound took a kunai from his belt, holding it tight as he crept in a low stance through the complex. Room after unused room lay dormant and undisturbed; it almost looked like nobody lived here at all. As he ventured further, the masked Uchiha could hear the sound of distant music coming from the opposite side of the structure. With this pickup, he would move as silently as possible while accelerating nearly into a run. Through the broken floorboards and collapsed walls, Kirei navigated his way to a large hole overlooking a hollowed out chamber once used as the factory's main assembly line.

Red eyes widened; sprawled across the open floor, the Uchiha set his gaze on the Kabuki Killer's macabre project. A hand-built stage laid with props and sets, makeshift curtains parted wide open as if before the start of a show. The eerie sounds of strings being plucked echoing through the otherwise empty chamber make the boy grimace.

'What's he planning?' was Kirei's only thought.

Di's heart pounded out a sombre rhythm as he slunk through the side door to the fireworks factory. Dust and cobwebs clung untouched to the walls and ceiling but was conspicuously disturbed on the floor. The factory was indeed inhabited and as the chilling sound of a biwa echoed across the hallways Di knew that they had found their mark. Suppressing the urge to sneeze as he unsettled a cloud of particles from a heavy door Di looked around to see the source of the music.

To Di's surprise the player of the biwa turned out to be none other than a small wooden automaton. It was sitting alone in a sea of chairs, each facing a stage. The little doll plucked meticulously at it's strings while out onto the stage strode an outlandish figure. Dressed in a heavy kimono with a massive golden wig the Kabuki Killers face was painted the traditional white and red adopted by seasoned Kabuki actors.

It would seem that the mad mummer had just begun to perform a rendition of the final moments of Benkei the warrior monk. Swearing to buy his lord Yoshitsune time Benkei had held a bridge against an entire troop of soldiers slaying them all before being taken down by arrows. The Kabuki killer had made a few changes to the scene however as there were no archers in sight. Taking the role of Benkei the killer was wielding the monks iconic tree felling saw for a weapon. Such a giant implement would normally be far too much for a normal man – Benkei himself possessed supernatural strength being the son of an oni and a mortal woman. But the Kabuki Killer clearly had a demented might of his own allowing him to effectively carry and swing the makeshift weapon albeit with some difficulty due to it's unwieldy nature.

The actors dressed in soldiers costumes were in fact members of the hidden womens kabuki troops. It turned out that the Killer did not just have designs for male actors but was also kidnapping women and taking them to his layer to act out his depraved fantasies. Di had no time to wonder just how many women had already fallen to this madman as with a great YOOOOOOOOOO of exaltation the Kabuki Killer brought his massive saw blade down with a vertical strike to split an actresses head.

Acting out of pure instinct Di shot forward like a hawk launching himself into the air for a flying kick to strike the saw. His momentum and weight were enough to knock the heavy weapon from it's cause causing it to slam into the ground beside the actress. Righting himself from the maneuver Di slammed five punches in rapid succession into the killers stomach. The giant of a man barley flinched laying a backhand blow to Di's jaw and throwing the detective across the floor while regaining a good grip on the saw with the other hand. For a moment the killer flickered between whether he was going to pursue Di or finish off the girl. Girl chosen he lifted the saw again. If Kirei didn't act soon this would be the actresses last performance.

Even though Kirei felt inside like a real crime-fighter, his actual detective skills paled in comparison to Di's, and he was a fraction of the tracker that Yuji was. He felt far from useless though, seeing this new circumstance as the perfect opportunity to immerse himself in a new lifestyle and improve on his own terms. There was a profound freedom that came with choosing your destiny for yourself; he felt inspired by so many sources these days he couldn't count them. With all of the training coming up through the village, and his private practice alongside Di in their vigilante endeavors, the Uchiha was getting stronger by the day.

Kirei watched from his second-story perch as Di entered the main room and discovered the source of the music, a strange puppet lending ambiance to the oncoming scene. From the side-stage emerged a figure in a garb Kirei almost laughed at but managed to keep his snicker under wraps. The weapon wielded by the Killer was nothing to joke about, and the revelation that he'd been kidnapping women for his depraved performance made Kirei's blood boil. This murderous psychopath had been on the loose for far too long, Kirei wouldn't stand for these atrocities to continue.

He watched at first, while Di sprung into action reflexively to save an actress from inevitable demise. Kirei continued to observe but would begin moving, leaping into the main chamber and starting into a jog toward the stage while Di unleashed his flurry of blows. No ordinary man, or perhaps merely possessed by murderous fury, the Killer barely flinched and instead struck a mighty blow causing Di to collapse backward. Unfortunately, Di wouldn't be the intended target, and again it would be an intervention that saved this woman's life. With action broken out, the actual play would start and around the room, automated puppets with long sticks would begin pounding loud war drums in rhythmic patterns. The empty factory floor caused these thumps to echo tremendously.

Simultaneously molding chakra in his feet and hands, Kirei would burst forward with a quick leap and place a small amount of his chakra into the kunai gripped in his right hand and a second shuriken between his fingers. Tossing both weapons high into the air he would slide along the stage with his leg extended and perform a hand seal to substitute with the kunai. In synchronization, Kirei's Sharingan would spin rapidly as his copy wheel would work at reproducing his own movements: a second substitution. With his interception prepared, Kirei placed a hand on the woman and gave her a glimpse of the ninja arts, replacing both of them at once with the two metal implements which by now had come to rest only a few feet from the ground on the other side of the stage.

"You handle the freak in the wig; I'll get the girls!" Kirei shouted to Di and set to work, withdrawing another kunai into his hand and making a beeline towards the next bound victim.

At that moment Di knew that fate had graced him with a truly admirable partner. While many people would simply be caught up in the adrenaline of the fight Kirei - even in his formative years had his priorities in exactly the right places. Transforming into dragon state would be dangerous inside the theatre – Di didn't want to accidentally hurt one of the bound woman so instead he came forward in his human state. Glowering after being deprived of his trophy the Kabuki killer readied himself into a dramatic pose, saw high up and ready to lash out at Di.

Noting the placement of the weapon Di watched the saw arc down towards him as the gleaming teeth came on with unmitigated fury. Springing to a side Di planted his left foot on the top of the saw using it to springboard himself into the air in front of the Kabuki killer. Intent on delivering another backhand blow the Killer instead found his mouth meeting Di's boot as it cracked into his teeth forcing the man backwards. Blood poured from a split lip and the mans cheek was starting to swell.

Abandoning the saw totally the Killer attempted what could best be described as a bear hug his long wig flowing back and forth as he grappled at Di. Unfortunately for the detective he he slipped on one of the soldiers hats that had fallen on stage. Seizing this advantage the garishly garbed giant snatched Di up and proceeded to squeeze which Di's ribs started to protest greatly. Di couldn't just wait for Kirei to get him out of this one – the young ninja was already occupied with rescuing the actresses who had been bound also in a few seconds Di's ribs would all break possibly puncturing his lungs. This would lead to suffocation and the horrible event of drowning in ones own blood. Di's mind raced for an out, there had to be some way to stop the killer.

And there he had it. Benkei the warrior monk had been a famous collector of weapons having taken the katana's tetsubo and yari of over one hundred samurai. On the Kabuki killers side was a wakazashi which if anything like the saw was fully functional and combat ready. Slipping his hand down to the killers waist Di pulled the blade from it's sheeth slicing up at the hand that held his throat. Three of the Kabuki killers fingers dropped from his hand as he gasped in shock and pain. The grip around Di's neck faltered and the next stab went into the Killers leg bringing him down to his knees. Finally a kick to the temple was administrated with almost clinical precision knocking the   abominable actor out cold. Di threw the katana off into the mass of musical puppets and began to draw some cord out of his jacket to bind the lunatic. Looking to his masked companion Di chuckled wearily.

“Well Kirei I think I will stick to watching Noh plays for the next little while”

"Quickly, Kirei,"

His father's words still rang in the boy's head every time he performed under pressure like this. The long days of sparring in the Uchiha Compound with the other students, turning the suburb into a battleground where the winner would be who was capable of standing by sunset. As many of those memories as he had, he couldn't ever recall winning. But these past failures in the Leaf became his motivation now he was in the Mist, he was determined not to let his partner down, not to let these women down, and to righteously prevent the evil that would be brought on the world by men such as these.

So while Di engaged himself in combat, locking himself in an elegant dance with the flamboyant murderer, Kirei dug the blade of his kunai beneath the straps binding the first victim, the Kirigakure serrated design making short work of the otherwise sturdy ropes. The women, one after another, would each scream and make haste towards the exit where they would pour onto the desolate streets and be free of this warped nightmare. The blonde darted back and forth across the stage, trusting that his draconic companion, even resigned to his human form, would be capable of dealing with the immediate threat.

After freeing the last of the captives, Kirei would not turn to assist Di right away but would instead help usher the women to the exit, making sure they found their way out and checking for wounds along the way. He had faith in Di so wanted to attend to the other pressing matter; in the life of a crime-fighter, stopping the bad guy was only half of the job, saving the victims was just as important. Di and Kirei understood this both; the duo was beginning to operate as a genuine crimefighting unit. Directing the last of the women away from the factory, Kirei sprinted back through the doors to the theatre built within.

To his happiness, Kirei's eyes fell upon Di triumphantly standing over the Killer, out cold and pinned by his own blade. Shinobi or not, the Uchiha respected his partner's skill in combat as well as his intelligence. Though he did not escape without a scratch, Di appeared relatively unharmed, and Kirei jogged to meet him as he was leaning down to bind their catch.

"Yeah! And where he's going, he's gonna be watching 'No' plays!"

With their work done, they would deliver the Kabuki Killer to the authorities, and within hours they'd receive the terrible news: the villainous rogue had escaped already, dressing as a hunter-nin he'd slipped away into the night. Atop the administration building in the middle of the night, only hours after the fight at the factory, Kirei sat alone, on one knee, overlooking the city.

"The Mist is in trouble. She calls out to me, inspires me to protect her. For the good of everyone, I must become the unrelenting jaws of justice. A junkyard dog struggling against the face of evil. I must become...

The Hound."
