Battle on the Bridge:

The long wait after the end of her trials was finally over. Izumi was coming into this battle rested and healthy. The only injury Izumi had sustained up to this point was a relatively minor cut on her left shoulder that had long since been healed. The young fiery haired woman was wearing her typical battle clothing, leather pants, leather boots, and a tight fitting long sleeved shirt with a tight fitting sports bra that kept her jiggly bits well in place. Izumi had faced much deadlier opponents already. Izumi was not trying to discount her competition it was simply true that the proctors that hunted her down and the Chunin who patrolled the building that her and Hanza infiltrated were of a higher caliber than any genin could hope to be. Izumi felt oddly calm, the hardships and challenges she had faced up to this point in her life had prepared her. Although only a young woman of sixteen, she had seen horrors that some might go a lifetime without experiencing. Her home village was razed, she had rushed through the streets seeing burning bodies, neighbors killing neighbors, she had even witnessed a child dying in her arms. Izumi had the nerves of someone far beyond her years at this point. While it was only a singular battle, it had changed her.

Izumi and her would be opponent were standing on opposite sides of a long, wide bridge. Izumi's vision of her opponent was obscured by a tall pagoda in the middle of it. The building wasn't nearly as wide as the bridge, being only about ten meters across. Izumi had a handful of ideas up her sleeve for battle plans, almost all of which involved fire. A PA system could be heard introducing the contest,   "Ladies and gentlemen, fight number three of the Chunin exams is about to begin. Our combatants are: Izumi Karisuma representing the Mist Village and Kisei Ushinatta representing the Leaf." The man would begin counting down from five. As soon as the man finished his countdown, Izumi was off towards the pagoda. As Izumi ran, she removed her shirt, flowing a bit of chakra into it as she ran and threw it on the ground about thirty five meters from where she began. As the young woman ran, two copies of herself would appear at her side. Izumi and her dopplegangers were about twenty meters from the pagoda when they would stop standing side-by-side. Izumi was the furthest to her left, her two clones standing on her right hand side. All three were grinning, waiting for the young man who was to be her quarry to show himself.

This was it, the final rounds. Long days of work and training had prepared him for this moment. What a bunch of crap. All of his long spent days of bulldozing scorpions and deliveries brought him here. All of it was for nothing. His accomplishments would not be his own to enjoy. He represented the Hidden Leaf Village in this competition, a place he had image of, he could not accept it as his home for the moment. No. Though he had to admit that he never entered these exams to further his own fame or glory, no, definitely not, he wanted to glorify his home. To show the world what we were capable of. Images of peaceful sands, familiar faces of the villagers. It may had not been a perfect home, but it was his. Who got to judge when something didn’t get to exist anymore. Scrambling thoughts of fire and screams, the scent of smoke well acquainted with him. His heart started to race and he shut his eyes. Trying to calm down.

He clutched his umbrella in his left hand, the pinwheel held firmly in his right. Kisei was slowly losing his hold on control. The announcements blared around him, revealing his opponent to be a Karisuma. He flashed his head up. Only more aggression blanketing his eyes.

Just as the residual rage was about to explode all the fight inside him died in that instant, or appeared to. Kisei suddenly relaxed his grip on both weapons. Yes, I suppose I have been a bit pent up, please pardon me, and don’t look, I’d rather not have you see this fight. He thought calmly to himself. Flashing a small smile to the boy next to him that only he could see. Kisei turned his sights to the pagoda in the middle of the bridge. He was already about twenty five meters away from what he could judge. He angled his head to the right, absorbing the whole picture. As the announcer counted down he bent low, jumping into action as soon as it reached zero.

Kisei focused his chakra, circulating it through his body. Producing two clones to either side of him. Each holding the same weapon as he did. The width of the pagoda blocked any direct view he or his opponent might have of each other, he assumed, since he hadn’t seen them either. As he reached the pagoda he pressed his back up against it and directed his clones to move to either side, still staying within the shade of the pagoda. Both of them taking liberty to introduce themselves while he passed a bit of his chakra into his umbrella.

"It pains us both deeply to fight a fellow survivor of that Tragedy of Flames, so would you consider surrendering? Or are that confident in your abilities to believe you can beat us?" They deadpanned. Each clone would ready their weapons, reflecting a blank stare that matched their neutral tones. "Shall we?"

With the sun at Izumi’s back at a low angle, she was casting three long shadows. The young woman watched like a hawk along with her clones. Their eyes darted around, searching for signs of her opponent. The wait was not long however, a young man with black hair would approach from both sides of the building. He has clones too The two visages of her opponent would speak in unison, "It pains us both deeply to fight a fellow survivor of that Tragedy of Flames, so would you consider surrendering? Or are that confident in your abilities to believe you can beat us? Shall we?" As they spoke Izumi would notice that the sound of footsteps were conspicuously absent. Academy Clones, that means he can’t be too far, probably on the other side of the pagoda. Izumi decided to toy with him a little, not immediately betraying that she noticed the clones, although it was probably in her best interest to deal with them before any real fighting began, as they would serve to obscure her view most likely even if they couldn’t actually interact with her. “Ahhh, you’re from the Sand too?” The three Izumi’s would ask in unison still grinning, light in her eyes. “Are you really that afraid of a little battle that you would ask me to surrender before we even fight?” Izumi’s smile would turn from friendliness to malice quickly as Izumi and her copies reached behind her back to pull out some senbon and toss them at the clones, three at each of them. One aimed center of mass, one to its left, and one to its right.

The three Izumis would walk forward in unison, not caring if their attacks on the clones worked because there’s no way they could pose a threat to her given their immaterial nature. Stopping at the entrance of the pagoda before the one in the middle and the one on the right began to speak while the Izumi on the left took a deep breath, filling her mouth with katon chakra and exhaling a steady stream of gas into the pagoda. “Why don’t you come out Kisei, you’ll have to fight me eventually. The Izumis would wait for the boy to respond, smiling as they do so confident that they would be able to catch the boy in her trap.

“Are you really that afraid of a little battle that you would ask me to surrender before we even fight?” The Ushinatta laughed to himself. Until he heard the clink of metal, so light he thought he imagined it for a second. Kisei didn’t have too good a view of the situation, as he was huddled up next to the opposite entrance door into the pagoda, and although he heard every word it certainly surprised him when he heard the rush of projectiles to either of his sides. Kisei snapped his view to his right just in time to see the senbon pierce through the illusion of his clones, both of them evaporating. Damn it, well a surprise attack is out of the question now.

The sound of footsteps a “Why don’t you come out Kisei, you’ll have to fight me eventually. Kisei grimaced. One of his great disgraces as a weapon specialist; he couldn't fight close range. He just wasn't built for it! Sure he boasted a good game but it was all for show. He never actually held his own in a 1v1 fight with only his weapons. Especially when every one of his opponents was well versed in ninjutsu- what was the smell? It was faint from where he was but definitely noticeable. It smelt like that gas build up they had one time at the-  God no it couldn't be that could it? Better safe than sorry.

With a nod he directed the invisible boy in his mind front of him to peak into the entrance while he swung his pinwheel inside. Aimed towards the ground, if he was lucky a spark would- BOOM! The fire erupted and Kisei immediately winced in empathetic surprise, just managing to keep the sounds from escaping. The flames erupted on his side of the pagoda like it was breathing fire.  As soon as the fire died he jumped back into the middle of the entrance not wanting to waste any chance he had.

Holding his pinwheel pointed downward he aimed his umbrella straight ahead at the opposite side of the pagoda, aiming for a brief moment to aim straight down the middle before clicking the trigger. He could almost feel the wires surge with power, his masterpiece of an umbrella, filling with energy, a satisfying hiss eased his nerves as it discharged a solid bolt of energy.

However if while aiming he saw no note of his opponent then he'd withdraw back into his previous position. Cursing the missed opportunity. In either case he would be too focused to notice the bridge on both sides falling down into land below them until he heard the crash.

Izumi could see her senbon strike true in her periphery, dissipating the clones immediately on impact. Izumi still had the same look of malice on her face while she was gazing through the opening, waiting for some sign of the boy she was fighting. A flash of movement and a head, framed in the doorway gave Izumi the information she needed. However before she could spring her trap, the boys head was followed by some sort of weapon that struck the ground and sparked it erupting flames through the inside of the pagoda and out of the doorway. Malice still in their eyes, the Izumi on the right would make five hand signs, tiger, snake, tiger, dragon, tiger and would dash forward, obscured by the smoke and residual flames of the fireball that had erupted merely a second before. This mere second was enough for the Izumi from the right to close this distance sprinting at her highest speed. The trap was already set, the clone that had rushed forward was now a charged source of Katon energy carrying a dangerous surprise for Kisei should it get close to him. Luckily for her, the boy wasn’t done yet, and he jumped into the doorway and produced some other sort of device which fired a ball of energy. The clone would turn into an orb of flame that attempted to engulf the boy, trapping him within a searing oven of pure fire.

The projectile fired from the strange device would cover the distance in a fraction of an instant however, and strike the Izumi in the middle causing an explosion, that would destroy the clone as well as leave Izumi with some nasty burns on her right side, even some bruising from the sheer force of it. Izumi would not spring her substitution just yet. The young woman cried out from the pain of the blast, regretting having taken her shirt off when much of the uncovered skin on the right side of her body seared with burns. Izumi’s concentration was broken as she watched the orb spread out, unsure if it had worked. Taking a moment to gather herself from the pain of Kisei’s strange weapon the young woman took a deep breath before calling out to her opponent, "Kisei, if you’re in there I recommend you yield.” Izumi’s left hand would begin crackling with Raiton energy as she awaited some sort of sign of the boy being within, ducking down just outside the entrance her entire body hidden from obvious view.

In the middle of Kisei’s shot he spotted something in the sight of left eye. A very angry looking red head looking like she was about to burst with energy. Since he was already inside the building he had just enough room for his next trick. Ignoring the womanly scream that rocked the pagoda, he lightly pushed off the ground, his body instantly flinging itself upwards, diagonal; both to his right though mostly leading forwards and away from his opponent so he didn’t completely hit his head on the ceiling or land in whatever they were planning. Though he did feel a tingly warmth near his legs for moment. Just as the effects of his jutsu started wearing off he ducked his head, his vision contorting to the upside down view as he landed feet first on the ceiling with a light thud. He nearly screamed in pain, he kept his jaw stiff, trying to keep quiet, though no doubt a whimper escaped.

Not even needing to glance at his leg to know that it was burnt, seems these clothes weren't fire proof enough. The burns spread to the front of his lower part of legs, opposite of the calf. It was a bit early to tell but there also might be a few minor burns on his forearms, nothing excruciatingly painful thankfully.

Kisei lightly huffed at the anxiety over taking him. Looking down he could tell why he felt that heat earlier. Down on the ground a rather large sphere of swirling flames swallowed the space he had resided not even a moment ago. It would seem that his left leg didn’t escape unscathed. Kisei shook his head. I don’t have time to lolly gag around! With a flick of his umbrella he opened it silently as he could to avoid drawing attention to himself in case that girl hadn’t already caught on yet to where he was. If anything the black of the umbrella would camouflage him with all the dark shade he got up here.He held his pinwheel in his mouth as he worked quickly on his opened umbrella. Opening the sole ammunition chamber in his modification and taking out the cartridge/battery and slipped it into his open jacket pockets, zipping that pocket up halfway as he moved to another pocket and pulled out an identical battery, fully charged. He inserted the battery into the mod and closed it up, still keeping his umbrella open. It would be ready to fire any half-moment, the acclimation time was incredibly short-

"Kisei, if you’re in there I recommend you yield.”

Their voice gave away their position, they were still at the end of the pagoda! Measuring himself he was about a meter ahead of the fiery sphere of death, if he burst forward he might have a chance to end this. For good or bad. Dropping his umbrella he pushed off as hard as he could with his non-injured leg, forcing maximum speed ahead. He took the weapon in his mouth out with his right hand and flicked on his pinwheel mid leap  the familiar whirl of machinery assuring to him. Twisting his body back to normal right side up perspective in the process. He spun quickly, his feet flat to the ground and his chest pointed at the entrance spot on, the movement assisted by wind energy. he swung out his pinwheel, surging it with additional electrically charged chakra. Around them the bridge cracked and crumbled as it started to fall apart again. Though that was the least on his mind.

The pinwheel was on and at its maximum speed, expanding outwards as the wind drew his target closer to him. he whole weapon crackled, charged with toxic electricity it was an all or nothing gamble.

Kisei reacted to her attack pretty quickly much to her surprise. She did not expect him to be able to so in such a short window and was bit surprised. However, to her satisfaction the young man decided to rush her, his strange weapon extended and spinning. Izumi would take the attack willing with a grin and her body would flicker into an after image as her body was replaced with the shirt she removed at the start of the fight. Izumi would make a single tiger symbol focusing on the flame orb behind the young man. It would flash white and then from it would fire a six meter radius fireball moving at a speed of twenty meters a second, it would close the distance from the flame orb to Kisei in a moment. Should the young man leave his feet in avoidance, Izumi would make a single half ram sign and fire a lightning bolt at him sending him back fifteen meters off the edge of the bridge should it connect. Under the cover of her new attacks, Izumi would charge forth with her kunai drawn ready again for close range combat she did not want to take another blast from that … thing whatever it was. "This has been fun Kisei but I think it's time this ended."

Kisei was still swirling around softly as he gracefully landed on the ground with both feet, so the flaming mass of fire burling his way was not much of a surprise, even catching a glimpse of it at the end of his attack. Just as he was about to flicker and activate his substitution when the fireball made contact with his umbrella and sent it flying straight passed him and right into the marsh below. The ground around him crumbled and cracked, breaking apart as he knelled down and just, felt.

That was his only possession that mattered in this whole world. A insignia to his journey as a ninja, a representation, and incarnation of his entire journey as a ninja. It had never left his side. Not until now. Now, right now, he was pissed.

Kisei turned on his toes to face his opponent, pinwheel still crackling with electricity, however this time he kept his guard up, holding his pinwheel in front of him. The edge still active and spinning. Without his umbrella he was stark naked in this fight. Kisei then pushed forward at a running pace. Grief and anger and adrenaline keeping his focus sharp. However he did have one ace in the sleeve. He charged his spinning pinwheel with the power of the wind, then suddenly slashing his weapon in an arc in front of him. "AAAAHHH!" A massive gust of wind blew up in front of him, and just a moment after it reached it's end he would slash again, keeping a consistent wall of wind in front of him until he reached his forth one. Though if his opponent had made a move before he started he started running than he'd match their attack with a slash of wind.

Unless it was clearly a fire style attack, in that case he had a contingency plan, but for now lets just worry on the present. With his free hand however he discreetly reached into his pocket and brought out one of the batteries that his other weapon had used for ammunition. He might need the extra push.

Due tot he bridge itself at the end of the post shortening to its smallest length, and with the umbrella taking a fireball from behind it which would have easily blown it away onto the bridge as it has impact damage printed on it. I'll allow you to edit your post to leap backwards, but as it stands, you can either grab your umbrella and then have the bridge crumble out from underneath you and you fall to your loss. Or, you can leave your umbrella, and save yourself as it falls off the edge. Also, with the force of the blast knocking the umbrella closer to Izumi, you would also be running at her head-first to get there and reclaim it, putting you pretty darn close to her.

Also, Izumi, with your running pattern you have to react to this bridge fall this coming post, or also loose as your shirt was never specified to be centered on the bridge.

Izumi was a bit surprised when the boy swapped with his umbrella she had not expected him to use something so integral as his item of choice to swap with. Nonetheless, his poor planning had cost him and his umbrella was blasted away down into the gorge below.  The larger surprise came when the bridge began crumbling beneath her. Her shirt was a bit off center of the bridge, about two meters. Izumi had begun falling about a meter from the new boundaries of the bridge thankfully she had already been running towards her opponent and was able to use this momentum to towards the bridge. The boy was about 11 meters away and was advancing on her slashing at her with his other strange weapon that was charged with chakra of some kind and putting up walls of wind as he ran presumably to prevent her from firing a technique his way. After throwing her kunai at the boy's chest, Izumi would use her clear speed advantage on the boy, running at a full sprint in the opposite direction of his advance gaining range from him while she made a tiger sign. The boy seemed to have stopped firing out his walls of wind after making four so Izumi planted her feet.

Now about 25 meters away from the boy thanks to her advantage in mobility and his apparently injured leg. Izumi would shoot forth a fireball at the boy it’s diameter was about 10 times the width of the bridge. Immediately after the fireball’s expulsion, Izumi would string the tiger symbol she still held into a familiar pattern, tiger snake, tiger, dragon tiger. Izumi would fire a second fireball behind it moving a little bit slower but was smaller and would be able to hid behind the first fireball, obscuring it from the boy's view. Once this second fireball was two meters from the boy a familiar orb of flame would be sprung forth from the initial fireball presumably trapping the advancing boy. Once she saw the orb start to expand Izumi would fire a lightning bolt from her left hand after making a half ram seal with the right sending a bolt of electricity that would send the boy slamming into the walls of his prison should it strike him. Izumi hoped that her last attack was enough, she was begging to feel the effects of this drawn out battle.

Kisei intercepted the kunai with his pinwheel, thrusting the pinwheel forward and shredding the feeble metal. Looking south to his opponent their view became smaller and smaller. He halted his movement. This girl could use ninjutsu, they were probably readying for another attack. Why else would she back off other than to give herself more distance? Kisei stood still until he saw the first flame begin to form his way. His pinwheel was still active and spinning. It might be a risky move however it was better than his alternatives.

Kisei bent down to the side of the bridge, like a rag doll whose owner let go of. Focusing chakra into his feet he stuck to the side of the bridge, and with another quick step he walked to the bottom of the bridge, hanging upside down like a bat. Even the crackling of his weapon reminiscent of… whatever sounds bats made. The Ushinatta leaned in close to his new “ground.” Tucking in tight until he got notice that his opponent’s assault has passed above him. Crackling flames passed above him however Kisei yelped in surprise at being trapped inside a sphere of flames still, confused at his situation. How did it catch him?! He was sure that-

Just then the sphere disappeared in a crack of lightning above him. Kisei waited for a moment, seeing if there was anything else than this Karisuma had in store. After about a second he tentatively crawled back up to the right side of the bridge, mimicking a gecko in his movements, before returning to his two feet.

All this stress was starting to get to him. Kisei slowed down his breathing, taking deep, slow breaths. Judging from the pain in his left leg his blisters had burst. The old burns on his arm were minor just a little singed and it didn't help that Kisei was starting to sweat from all this heat. He was started to feel overheated and crisp all over his body. With his battery and pinwheel still in hand he started to walk forwards, cringing and aching with each step. He was quick enough that he wasn’t a slug but also slow enough that he didn’t disturb his new injuries, also a great way to recover some of his stamina. “What’s wrong Izumi, outta breath already?” He jeered half halfheartedly.

Update on Ruling: After revisiting my ruling I noticed I missed something and the lightning from Izumi's third attack would not actually hit the prison underneath the bridge. I'm calling this battle in her favour, for the fact that Kisei would not be able to continue the precise chakra control needed for supernatural walking practice after being caught in the fire prison. This means he would fall from the bridge, down below.

A lightning bolt stuck the ground upon either end of the bridge that had barely enough material to be called such anymore. The bolts formed into two lightning shinobi of a black and white colour, barely more than grey scale in their tones. The two shinobi made handseals which caused stone to push out from the mountainsides and lift up to catch the young Ushinatta who was falling within his prison of fire. It did so not too gingerly, causing enough force to break apart the jutsu while raising ever higher. Eventually the makeshift bridge would raise high enough for the two shinobi to walk across it to the center. One would pick up Kisei, the other turning to Izumi, speaking with a loud booming voice, which seemed to be enhanced with chakra to carry his words to any listeners near. "The deciding blow has been dealt and we see the genin Izumi Karisuma, representing Kirigakure, crowned the victor of this match! Fight well in the next round! Thank you all for coming!" With that, the two shinobi disappeared as though using shunshin no jutsu, but not before setting Kisei back on solid ground.

Izumi's last attack had been everything she had left, the young woman stood her ground panting from exhaustion as she watched her fireballs fly forth to their target. He avoided the first one however the prison following closely behind it captured him. The boy had dove off the side and was standing on the side of the bridge when it caught him. The young woman smiled in satisfaction although there was a hint of something more sinister. The boy had been defeated, his body was falling to the ground and possibly his death when proctors intervened to save him. Announced as the winner, Izumi smiled and silently walked towards the gate she entered relieved she had defeated this opponent, it was tougher than she though it was going to be but the end result was obviously what she wanted. As she walked her hands would glow green with chakra and start healing her burns on her right side.

Kisei was falling, and then he was rising.

He didn’t understand this, he didn’t understand any of it.

His back was facing the ground and his line of sight sideways “Don’t leave me….” He weakly called out to the familiar boy looking down on him. Those same eyes, that hair, the familiar mannerisms he carried himself with. Kisei knew who he was, but at the same time he didn’t. Just as they were about to fade out of sight he could swear that they had turned away from him. Vanishing like the wind and his chance at victory.

What did he do wrong? Kisei wondered, as the wind roared against his limp body his mind turned further inward.

He had lost so many things in his life. A childhood he could never fully reclaim, his first love, his family, his world, his new home…. And now I’ve lost this fight. Kisei had never really cared for this battle. A bunch of meaningless platitudes that he would deny with a scowl, honors that he would reject fervently. Though… though it would’ve been nice you know? To at least have this. To know that he was above all of this ninja nonsense, that he could play the barbarian better than these primitive humans. That he was just better than them.

Though he knew all along that there was never the possibility of that.

Around him voices were calling his opponent as the victory of the battle and Kisei could start to feel the tears start to build up. As one of the proctors placed him down to the ground a familiar blaze of green hair enveloped his sight. “Shh. You did amazing, but you need to rest Kisei.” The voice of his brother assured him. Alpha? He leaned closer into his brother’s hold. The Ushinatta had lost the will to fight and lacked the energy to mourn his loss but the tears still flowed and stung as it clumped onto Alpha’s shirt.

“I tried, tried so hard-”

“I know you did.” Alpha assured kindly.

“And it still wasn’t enough…”
Kisei croaked. Why couldn’t he be allowed this small victory. Affirmation that he belonged here, that he was needed here. Not an extra gear or an old one that needed replacing, but an essential piece of the whole machine. “I just wanted to win… not for the nations, not even for this exam…. I just wanted to win... for me…” His poured down harder as Alpha pulled Kisei closer and into a more secure position. Walking towards the gate a dozen paces behind the woman who defeated his brother.

“Just… sleep.” Alpha commanded.

The pain from his injuries overshadowed by the extent of his exhaustion. And just like that he let go, closed his eyes, and fell asleep.
