Valley of Clouds:

Loud crowd noise was bumming outside the gate door before Kahou. Cold breeze was whispering in her ears, gently floating her hair as she was taking one deep breath after the other. The humidity was high and she felt as if her skin was wet just by standing still, acompanied by the feeling of both cold and hot. Her heart beating so hard she felt its pulse in her ears as if it was a battle drum.

Was it not for the recent events Kahou would most likely be excitedly anticipating what awaite her behind that door and would most definitely try and prove her worth as a shinobi, but... she had this constant annoying buzzing in her head that reminded her how weak her resolve actually was, despite its looks on the outside. Without realizing it, the Karisuma longed for her 'grandpa' to be proud. Regardless of her statute in the noble's family as a slave, he always treated her kind and respectful and in turn she developed he need to prove to him that he did not make the wrong choice.

But now, as she was standing behind the arena's door, with him no longer amongst the living, she felt her resolution weak and rootless. Her death, her life, her failure, her success - it mattered not. Hell, even her sensei did not show up before the Chuunin Exams just to encourage her - whoever he or she was. Kahou felt just as empty as the stadium was filled up and despite all the commotion she felt alone and closed her eyes. The old man smiling and slowly fading into darkness was what she saw. A grip of fists and a grind of teeth - a result of the dull pain in her chest.

"Hey, do not worry if you lose... I promise I will take you somewhere nice!"

one of the genins in the wholeway gave her the wanton look and Kahou could feel her suffering mix up with a rising anger but just as she was to reply back in a furious manner, the Karisuma heard a loud crackling noise. The blonde's name literally meant 'Luck' and she usually lived up to her name - especially in situations like this one, but the question was - will that luck be enough now?

"It is time... Ganbatte!"

one of the overlooks announced giving Kahou the signal to move on. Placing her hands on her stomach for a moment she prepared for what was to comem both figuratively and literally, and started walking. Passing through the gate however did not chang much, except for the louder crowd noise, but the air was just as humid if it wasn't even worse. From time to time, dense cloudlike mist surrounded her, hiding everything from sight, even the proctor who was to announce the battle's start once both her and her opponent are ready.

The night before the first battle, Nova tended to her wounds. She wanted to be in top shape for the competition that was to come. Her ankle was still a little sore and was wrapped up, though luckly for Nova the state of her legs was irrelevant in battle. Though she would be in combat she had little need for combat attire, as such she was wearing a pair of shorts and tank top with her favored spider speckled kimono, and wore her hair in a tight bun on the top of her head. All she knew was the name of her opponent; Kahou Karisuma. This was to be the first battle in the path that would hopefully lead Nova to the finals. Nova was sitting in Kurogokegamu, her legs strapped in place, but the hatch still open and her head peeking out the top. She waited to enter the arena, a metal grate waiting to swing open upon the announcers signal for the combat to start. Mist swirled heavily past the gate, seeping through the metal bars but progressing little further in than a few feet. Nova twitched her fingers slightly, Kurogokegamu's metal legs readjusting on the ground, readying itself to skitter onto the battlefield of mist. The web cannon mounted on the puppets underside was loaded and ready to fire at Nova's command.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the fourth battle of the chuunin exams. In this round Kahou Karisuma will be facing off against Nova Makato. After counting down from three, the gates will open and combat will begin”, the announcer echoed through the valley, his voice reverberating off the cliffsides. Nova felt a slight rush of adrenaline as she tried to mentally prepare herelf. “Three... Two... One... BEGIN!” The metal grate fell into the slit in the ground with a loud clatter and immediately Nova had her puppet skittered forward. Mist swirled around her as she steered Kurogokegamu straight ahead at a sprint. The metal legs flew across the canyon quietly, the long dry riverbed of sand silencing the metallic clicks that would come from steel on rock. Her eyes scanned the mist for anything in her sight, though the mist limited her range of view she was able to make out shapes and shadows from 25 meters away. Though not perfect, it helped her avoid the few obstacles that were in her path, namely a few jagged rocks that stuck out from the riverbed.

The cliffs on either side towered above them, the vague shadow only visible from the mist, but she could hear the crowd roaring above as the match started. At the very edge of her vision, Nova saw the outline of a figure in the mist, her hands on her stomach. Without a second thought, Nova launched the projectile from the puppets cannon with the girl in its sights from 15 meters away, only slowing down slightly. The cannon was mounted to shoot upwards slightly, allowing the web to expand to its full size without catching itself on the ground.  A mess of glinting wire flew though the air, unraveling mid-flight. Only meters out from her the wire spread out, a spider web designed net skimming the ground and expanding to several meters out, the thin wires nearly invisible in the heavy fog that permeated the area.

Should the web come in contact with its target, the web would be caught on the lower edge around her body, then the momentum from the sides would cause the slightly weighted edges to wrap itself around the girls form several times, a cocoon of razor sharp web to restrain her. Each wire slapping against flesh would cut thin wounds as the strands sink in. As the girl would be restrained, Nova herself would be upon her, the puppets metal legs resting on Kahou's chest.

Clear and rapid sounds of metal hitting the rocky ground was what stood out from the surrounding noise as the crowd slowly quieted down in order to watch the show. The Karisuma was not able to distinquish the noise and this only made her even more cautious as her senses started tingling with a warning sign. She felt the need to survive take over her and her inner pain slowly faded away as danger was closing in.

The next thing she knew was an enormous non-humanoid silhoete appearing in the mist and the loud crackling noise of what sounded like a gun shot, followed by a buzzing sound of flying metal wire. In the next moment Kahou saw from the mist come out a large ever expanding metal net that was flying towards her and without any hesitation she would jump backwards, pulling a string of hair, which she would materialize as a clone in front of her. The net was moving too fast for any other maneuver and it was too wide for her to try and avoid it.

"Gomendasai..." was all she would think to herself watching her clone being wrapped up as a cocoon, as she would slide backwards from her jump, barely avoiding being the victim herself. She put her hands on the ground as she was stopping, confused by what she had just experienced.

A cocoon? Suddenly things started making sense as she remembered her third Trial and that boy... or rather that thing - Yasubei. He was a human-puppet and maybe... maybe this time she was fighting against a another one? But a bigger one and shooting sharp ass metal nets. It was not looking good for the girl named "Luck". This time she seems to have struck out. But as Kahou was trying to make a conclusion of what she was really facing, it came out of the blur, putting its metal legs on her trapped clone. A SPIDER-PUPPET?! WHY THOUGH?! She was both disgussed and utterly terrified...

Nova and Kahou's eyes met for barely a second just before Kahou rushed into the mist again in order to get some distance between them and plan her move. At least now she was sure that she was facing a puppet master and she could now work with the metal sound hitting the floor for Kahou knew where it came from. If she would stop seing her opponent she would put her hand on the ground creating a seal on the ground just barely in front of her and prepare to sense her pressence. After all if Kahou was barely seeing about 5 meters ahead of herself, she doubted her opponent would have better vision. Although she may have underestimated the spider...

OOC: 5 meters sight, up to 7.5m for you. At least that is what the arena details say. From what I understand also, you are half-body sticking out on top of the spider? In order to see, that is.

Sight based ruling: As it is 'not' specified in the mission description C rank and higher perceptions above D-3 are going to operate at 10m of clear sight with an additional 5m of shadows. (15m total) Nova can 'barely' see you.

Kahou saw the shadow of the puppet from seven and a half meters away, only just able to make out the web flying though the air from five meters. In a fraction of a second, the girl plucked a piece of her own hair and dropped it in front of her, turning into a replica of Kahou herself. The razor wire struck the clone that materialized before Nova, as the girl hopped backwards just a meter behind the clone in an attempt to avoid the dangerous threads. As the center of the web stopped in its tracks, the outer edges continued forward, swinging around the sides and behind the clone, reaching back several meters and still catching the girl herself in the web and pulling her towards her clone and binding her to it. Each time the web wrapped around Kahou and the clone it sliced into the flesh a quarter of an inch. The web ends wrapped around the girl and her clone several times.

Now upon the wrapped up pair Nova loaded a sticky web ammo into the web launcher from within the puppet and shot it short range at the already restrained Kahou and her clone. The sticky fibrous substance coating her and layering over the razor webs themselves, creating another binding to prevent the girl from taking any action. There was a dangerous glint in Nova's eyes and the spider circled the pair and the glinting crystal eyes on the front of the spiders met the real Kahou's, and Nova looked down at her prey. The spider touched it fangs to the right side of the girls shoulder without piercing it, and chakra flowed through it into the girl, a chakra venom flowing through her veins. The front left leg of the spider pressed against the left side of her neck, the blade hidden within poking out ever so slightly and drawing beads of blood. In the event the Kahou would attempt to move or escape, the razor webs would cut deeper if struggled against, and Nova was prepared with the blade that would extend and slide horizontally across her throat. Nova, in an ominous tone spoke down to the girl, “Forfeit to me Kahou Karisuma.”

As Kahou was still midair flying backwards she realized there was something she did not account for. The net's swing that was clamping her from both sides. Was it not her for powerful and fast clone she might have been caught in the web's embrace, but the emotionless image had thrown itself in the opposite direction, dashing powerfully into the wire, bleeding as the amunition was creating it's coffin. An unpleasant way to die nonetheless, hopefully one, Kahou would not need to experience. The swing was too fast for Kahou to completely dodge it and the web's two ends scratched both her shoulders before closing in on their caught prey. The pain was sharp at first but the wounds were no deeper than 1/4 inches and did not limit her movements. Yet.

Her feet touched the ground about three meters behind her initial spot and her clone had turned into a spider's dinner about 4 meters in front of its spawning point, standing between Kahou and Nova, slowly decaying into nothingness. Kahou was already breathing heavily for she had just escaped probably certain death, questioning her decision to even attend these exams... her opponent was obviously faster and better prepared for combat. But the Karisuma was not ready to give up jus yet as her adrenaline had reached sky levels bumped by the fight itself.

Feeling the warrior within Kahou started running towards the net coffin still decaying, hiding behind it and abusing the line of sight to take out two of her senbons from the ninja bag on her left leg, keeping them into her left hand. She knew the direction from where the web came, so the puppet must be still somewhere there... after all it was a big chunk of something with metal legs Kahou could clearly hear. She would know if it were to move. Hopefully.

Taking cover behind the wire cocoon, she would throw her senbons at Nova should the target appear and try to get as close as possible and figure out where did the net come from. It must have been shot from something, but what? Should the need appear she would try and evade any new projectiles that would come her way, winning her valuable time with the two senbons she would throw to force her opponent to dodge as she was closing in. Unless of course, the mist would be cover enough for someone to miss two flying needles with no sun to reflect in them.

This thread is awaiting a ruling and is considered on hold until its made. Though not from me.

In comment to your OOC comment: The arena favours those with higher perception, those with sensory techniques, or those with stealth techniques. It's not the fault of your opponent that they have not been used, trained or apped and the arenas were selected at random.

Battle Mod Ruling:
Spoiler:

The Kumogakure Jounin tasked with proctoring this particular fight had been chosen due to his sensory talent, something that allowed him to see through the mist with an ease that very few could. He watched the fight with eager anticipation, the spider tracking the prey, and it didn't take a Jounin to tell that one had an obvious sight advantage. With the way that she reacted, or rather the lack of reaction she had, he knew that she had no clue the attack was inbound, and he wasn't about to let her get wrapped by the razor wire unnecessarily.

Body Flickering in front of Kahou, he burst through some hand signs and a barrier formed in front of them, the net hitting it and bouncing backwards a few feet, crumpling to the ground. "Apologies, Miss Kahou, but I don't believe you could have avoided that attack. Unfortunately, I have to call the match there, as I interfered on your behalf. Nova is the winner and shall progress onward to the next round."

He waved his hand in the air, dispersing the mist around them to a visible level. And then, with that, he vanished, leaving the two of them to do as they pleased, beyond continuing the match.

Nova's web was about to wrap around Kahou's form, when from the mist appeared a man in a chuunin exam proctors uniform. His hands made several symbols and the incoming web stopped in its tracks, falling to the floor in a mess of wires. "Apologies, Miss Kahou, but I don't believe you could have avoided that attack. Unfortunately, I have to call the match there, as I interfered on your behalf. Nova is the winner and shall progress onward to the next round.", the proctor spoke, and he waved his hand to clear the air of the heavy mist. He nodded to the participants and vanished as quickly as he appeared. As the fog settled, Nova slowly unbuckled herself from her seat, and lowered Kurogokegamu to the ground. She stopped the chakra and slowly climbed out of her puppet, stumbling slightly as her weak ankle hit the ground. Nova straightened up and smoothed the sleeves of her kimono, and leaned down to tighten the knot that bound her Kiri headband over her wooden prosthetic knee. After adjusting, Nova walked forward stepping over the mess of wires that lay on the ground. She approached her former opponent and stuck her hand out, “It was an honor to fight you Kahou Karisuma. Thank you. I'm glad you were not injured.” Nova said somewhat sheepishly. As she shook her fellow genin's hand, who was also representing Kiri, she spoke once more, “And I look forward to seeing you in Kiri, I am a refugee from Suna and chose Kiri as my new home.”

Everything happened too fast for Kahou to even make a step. Was she really so far behind in terms of battles? After seing the net she froze in place as the razor wire was flying towards her too fast for her to react. In th next moment she saw a body in front of her - one of Kumo's best who announced her lose. His words stopped making sense midsentence for her as the addrenaline was rapidly cooling down. She was realizing that there was no place for her on the battlefield. She could never kill if needed, she could barely harm someone and more importantly she had no way of actually escaping anything that an opponent would throw at her. She was a siting duck on the battlefield. Kahou saddened by how meaningless her own existence was to... to... there was no one she was even remotely close to friends, let alone be important to.

Her opponent came out of the mist, riding a spider-like puppet that bowed down as she left her operating spot, barely keeping herself on her feet. She put out her hand and spoke but the words just passed by Kahou who was looking back at her with an empty stare. The crowd was oohing as they expected more from these battles, some of them yelling "Go back home!" at Kahou. If Kahou was in a rabbit's hole before the chuunin exams, her failure now had thrown her deep into a chasm of darkness.

She was so alone where she was but other's ordinary attempts to befriend her had absolutely no effect. Kahou slowly turned away withotu responding to Nova - not because she was impolite or because she holded a grudge against her for winning - but because everything was so meaningless... she had noticed the Kiri bandana and heard Nova's words... at least now the Mizukage would be happy.

As she was stepping out of the arena she heard the announcements for the other battles that were taking place and out of everything that was said there was only one thing that stood out:

"...to begin. Our combatants are: Izumi Karisuma representing the Mist Village and Kisei..." a radio hang on the wall was booming right above the blonde. There were many like these spread out across the building in order for all viewers to keep track of the on-going tournament. Bummers for the spectators who chose this match though... but Kahou was not battle ready... maybe she never would be. She stopped and looked towards the radio, staring for a while as the words she heard echoed through her mind as if they were on repeat.

"Another... Karisuma?" she whispered to herself still looking up but this time her eyes were no longer seeing as bilions of questions and scenarious unveiled themselves in front of her. Could it be that she had family in Kiri she knew not of?

"... I am a refugee from Suna and chose Kiri as my new home..."

Nova's words sounded in Kahou's mind as she started connecting the dots. Maybe Makato was not the only one to seek refuge in Kiri... but the hope of meeting family clashed with the memory of her own childhood when she was sold out in slavery. The reasons she knew not but the Karisuma could not be too excited with this awful memory narrative in her head.

"Maybe... maybe she is like me..."

OOC: Ganbatte, Nova!
OOC@proctors: So if I correctly understand, there was no way for me to actually escape the net right? Unless I metagamed or something. :D
