Nova Makato

Nova Makato

A-rank
Nova had recently began an investigation into a series of rumors that she had heard involving a nearby island and a race of monstrous spiders. The first mentions she had heard of such a thing were drawn upon her arrival to the new village and the arachnoid design that she had used for Kurogokegamu. She had overheard many comments about it, and concern expressed because of the fear they had for the aforementioned island dwellers. A terror tinged their words, and when she tried to ask further they would hush her and try to slip past the conversation as though it never happened. Nova however, had a different response to those hushed words, she became more intrigued by the concept. A race of human sized spiders she though, looking at Kurogokegamu, she had a strong desire to explore the rumors of the barren island and its inhabitants. Even more than the spiders, the spider sage who was known to live there was a person of great interest to her, though she did not know if she actually wanted to meet him in person.

Besides her noted interest, one of the activities she had grown to love in her now-destroyed home village was wandering the wilds surrounding the city with her taste for exploration. She had found many secrets in the desert, and longed for a bit of the peace of being alone with her puppet. She had not yet gotten a chance to explore the land around her new village, and found the mist that seemed a constant presence was soothing to her. She set plans to leave the next morning, early but not before tea, and have enough supplies packed for a two day journey there and back. It had been quite some time before she had had a journey such as this with her puppet and she was excited for it. “camping came quite easy for her, as she neither had to carry along a tent, nor set one up. When it came time to sleep she curled up inside of Kurogokegamu, on the plentiful cushions that are inside, close it up and be quite cozy. She prepped the night before, packing several days worth of provisions; pieces of crusty breads, a selection of dried and seasoned meats, soft and hard cheeses, fruits and berries, and of course her favorite snack mochi into a large picnic basket that fit snugly in Kurogokegamus storage compartment she had inside. She has recently picked up a few large waterskins as well, with this adventure in mind. Three of those she filled with water, and as she herself did not have to exert herself much through traveling in her puppet, she figured that would be plenty. In the fourth waterskin, she filled it with a sweet, strong wine that mad her head spin with just a few sips.

She woke long before dawn the next morning, a combination of being unable to sleep for excitement, and desire to get going early in the day. Recalling she had not shoved any clothes into the puppet, she tossed in a pair of shorts, a warm oversized sweater, a pair of leggings, and a tank top. and a blanket as well. For today, she threw on a pair of shorts, and a loose, soft sweater that hung so low it nearly covered the shorts. Without delay, she headed off to her favorite place in all of Kiri, “Peaches and Cream Tea Room” for her last cup of lavender tea before she set off. She left Kurogokegamu just outside the door, everything latched up and packed, and settled in to one of the places signature over sized chair, most of them with a hideously aged floral pattern. She smiled and waved at the waitress that she now recognized, and when asked if she was ordering her regular she nodded, a yawn breaking out at the same time. Within minutes, her cup of steaming lavender honey tea was in her hands being sipped at, a bear claw half eaten on the plate beside her. She inhaled the warm, home-y scent and smiled, excited for the coming days. Sipping down the remainder of the soothing beverage, and stuffing her mouth with the last two bites of her pastry she was ready to leave. Waving at the waitress goodbye, Nova hopped inside of the puppet, latched herself in, and set off.

She emerged from the city walls to a fog filled valley. Nova had recalled upon her journey from Suna to here that the land was spotted with lakes and rivers, and the mist seemed to never break. It made her feel sealed off from the world, and the noises that she heard sounded much further off than they likely were. The birds that sung for the rising sun echoed eerily and they sounded far apart. Nova sat upright in her puppet as she had it stride along the rocky ground, the mist gathering in beads on her puppets shell, and she felt her face and hair become faintly damp as it clung to her as well. Along with the mist the air smelt earthy, and damp. Though it was not a familiar scent, it was a pleasant one, one that she hoped would replace the smell of the hot desert as her comforting scent. Her journey the first day was uneventful, pleasant, and quiet. She had passed by several lakes, though none of them large enough to house an island. The first night, she had found a small cove besides one of those lakes and decided to camp there. Nova sat down beside the water to eat her meal, dancing the toes from her right foot across the surface of the cool pool. It was an enjoyable evening, and she had almost drifted off laying besides the water before shivering from the cool air and curled up inside the puppet with her blanket.

The next morning she woke early, and decided to bathe in the pool before she set off. She stripped bare and stepped into the cool pool to wash the sleep from her body, the chill running up her spine and waking her up quickly. After just a moment of the brisk water, she stepped out, dried herself with the blanket she brought, and threw on a pair of leggings and a tank top, and her kimono with spider embroidery. She ran a comb through her hair and set off again, hoping to find the island by noon. Just as every day the thick mist hovered in the air, though something felt odd to Nova, not anything noticeable to make her question it, just enough for her to have a slight knot in her stomach. Though she could not pick it out, the hair on the back of her neck stood and it felt as though there was something or someone who could see her though she could not see them.

It was barely eleven in the morning when Nova came upon a large expanse of water, and though visibility was low she thought she saw a sort of mass in the center. To her left was a tall red Torri gate, scorched in several places, with a road leading to a broken bridge crossing the lake. This was the closest thing to the descriptions she had heard that she had seen thus far. She debated for a moment as how to cross, the gate and bridge giving her a feeling of unease, then slid down inside of her puppet closing the hatch on the top. Her puppet was watertight as long at the hatch was closed and the tube through which she could reload her puppets cannon was slid shut as well. Channeling chakra to see through her puppets eyes, her vision blurred before reappearing, vision based from the eyes of her puppet. The puppet moved onwards, the thin legs sending ripples against the smooth lake before the body was submerged. Sliding into the water the puppet skittered along the sandy lake bed, Nova entranced by the way the flora that thrived beneath the water fluttered to a current that was not visible along the surface. There was an ecosystem that flourished here in the chilly waters, that she might have never known about but for this adventure.

The lake was large, and it took nearly half an hour to cross the body of water before breaking back to the air. Nova found herself on a barren, and frankly spooky looking shore. The island itself was covered in skeletal trees and the husks of underbrush. Some look singed, others looked as though life had just left them of its own accord. Her gut was doing backflips and she had a feeling that she couldn't shake, though she was prey for some great beast that was beyond her vision. She hoped that this sensation was just a result of listening to the rumors and letting them worm their way into her mind. The road that continued from the other side of the bridge was here as well, getting narrower and weaving its way between a thick forest of the bare trees, each one coated with a thick layer of webbing. The webs indicated that she was in fact in the right place, and unable to shake the feeling she had of being watched, Kurogokegamu skitter forward, still safe inside its hard shell. The mist was heavier here than before, obscuring all but a few feet in front of her down the path. Road weaving between trees, the path came to a black, wrought iron fence, spikes atop it. There was a sign posted on the menacing gate warning trespassers away, though Nova saw nothing to enforce such a thing.

Mist still heavy, Nova thought she could make out the road crawling up a large hill encompassed by this fence. A face of determination now etched on her face she led Kurogokegamu up and over the fence, continuing up the barren hill. There were far fewer trees here, though the ones that were were as dead as the ones on the other side of the fence, also adorned with the spiders silk. As she ascended the mist lightened, revealing a tall building, or more accurately a castle sat atop the hill. The closer she came the more elegancy and eccentricity she could see, the manor towered over her, a belltower and two archer's towers stabbing into the sky. The road led straight up to the building, through an extravagant garden with plant life Nova had no hope of recognizing, along with two ornate fountains on either side of the pathway up. She felt as though the building itself were staring down at her as a meal as she approached the solid oak doors, two round knockers protruding from the wood. Not leaving the safety of the interior of her puppet, she held her breath, raised a single spindly leg and pulled back the knocker, letting it fall against the door loudly. Her breath still held in her throat, she awaited a response.

Had she but listened to them perhaps she would have survived the night. At least that was what the inn keeper and his serving girls thought as she went about her day after inquiring of perhaps the most dangerous being they had ever known. They had only come across the lord of the manor once in their life and it still gave them nightmares. The inn had been taken over by a group of bandits attempting to lay low. Held hostage and made to close the inn for the day. However that had only served to arouse suspicion. Had they known that lord Sero was hunting them they may have fled right away. To this day they still thought the bandits who threatened their lives had been preferable to that monster. He came in and spread darkness through out the inn and flooded it with mist. The sounds of the bandits screaming haunted them every time they closed their eyes. It had seemed to last for hours. They recalled the sounds of men, hardened criminals begging through sobs to be spared his justice. To simply face execution. They remembered the bandits being driven mad as they were picked off one by one in the mist with no chance of escape. Most of all, the inn keeper and his serving girls remembered almost going mad themselves. For having witnessed the devil do his deeds the entire time they huddled together in a corner and felt in every slow second that they too would be next.

Still the choice had been hers. With her mechanical spider carrying her about the crowds were nervous to begin with. To them Sero was like a living deity of death. Lacking a sense of morality or mercy. They knew of his connection to spiders and had seen his 'servants' come to the village more than once. Massive spiders come to collect what the manor needed. Leaving behind coin and yet people were always terrified. They could not reason out the spiders simply going about a set task. As if at a moments notice the spiders might lash out at them. To drag their young off in the night. At worst they had consumed some stray animals...a pet or two left unattended. However it only further instilled their terror of him. A spider like deity. Sending his servants into the world and now this strange girl would mimic them. Perhaps it was unknowingly. However they feared it would not be seen as flattery or worship. They feared it would be viewed as mockery. So when she finally left the village behind they were put more at ease. They did not try and stop her because her fate was sealed where ever she went. So long as she was not next to them when he came they would be fine. However Sero was yet to know of this girl. No messenger had come, no rumors ever swung by the island. They were secluded and visitors were rare. At least until she arrived at the gateway.

Most people crossed quickly using supernatural walking practice. However he methods were slower. The air tight submersible puppet held under the lakes surface along the bottom. Even as she went though it would be slow going. Lack of visibility and stable footing slowing her progress as well as a slight tide occasionally pulling at her puppet. Had she been able to see more though it would have only been more reason to turn back. Under the waters the closer she got to the far shore of the island the more the puppet stepped across bones. Animal and human alike the bones were scattered there. Like a mass grave only tossed into the waters. Flesh peeled clean off of them. Some more broken than others and some even partially melted. She crossed dark waters and a massive grave all at once. Perhaps it was how dark the waters were that gave her this courage. Letting her press forward. Perhaps had she known the horrors she was seeking out she may have stopped then. However Nova would not be stopped so easily. Not by a body of water. However even as she emerged she would feel it. Clear as day there was something already watching her. Hunting her as she became visible on the shore with water pouring off of her. Even as she progressed to the road quickly within the woods dark shapes darted back and forth. Watching, chattering...waiting. Unsure of what to make of this metal version of themselves.

Nothing would bar her path though as she progressed forward. Her construct that she rode within was less than subtle and seemed ever louder out in the woods alone. As if she were screaming her presence to whatever resided further in. As she drew close to the clearing with the black gate though it would feel like she had stirred whatever was idly watching her to wakefulness now. Like it was always right behind her. Like it could somehow crawl into her protective shell without her noticing. The kind of sensation that has you imagining things in the corner of your eye. As she opened the black gates their creak would echo across the mist and for a moment after nothing moved. The area was so void of movement and sound one might have though time had paused itself. Yet she proceeded onward. Moving through the garden as a great machine carried her forward. So safe within it. As if she were invited there she simply strode up the path to the front door itself. So eager to meet this man. As her puppets spindly leg rose suddenly it would stop responding to her commands. As if it had been encased in solid concrete. From nothing suddenly he was there. A man with long white hair in white robes with blue trim. A single long sword on his left hip. Eyes as empty as a dead mans looking down at the puppet with a pale hand sporting long fingers with nearly black crimson nails holding her puppets leg with no chance of escape. No hint of where he had come from. In the blink of an eye he simply existed. Still he seemed to look beyond the puppet. As if he was making eye contact with her regardless of the metal between them. When he spoke it was monotone and yet his words could not be doubted.

"If you wish to meet anyone here, you will come out of your shielded safe space. If you prefer however, I will come to you."

The puppets thin leg was retreating from the knocker as it was suddenly stuck in place. Twitching her finger back again, Nova tried to return Kurogokegamu's eight spindly metal legs to the ground to no avail, the leg frozen in place. Nova's heart stopped in her chest as she spotted the pale hand firmly grasping it so that no matter her strength it did not move. A shiver ran down her spine and she felt her flesh go cold, adrenaline filling her veins instantly. It felt as though the world was spinning fast around her and she had just been yanked away from it, frozen. She would have screamed had her jaws not locked themselves shut and she immediately closed off the flow of jutsu that blocked her hearing and allowed her to see through the puppets eyes. She did this just in time to hear a voice that oozed with power, "If you wish to meet anyone here, you will come out of your shielded safe space. If you prefer however, I will come to you."

Nova's throat tightened, her mind racing as what to do. Many options flowed through her mind though the voice rang in her ears and she knew she had no choice but to obey the command. The tone with which the man spoke presented himself as one that should not be questioned or fought against, and though she felt safe inside the puppets metal shell, the man implied that he could break her puppet as easily as he could crack a walnut under his foot, and Nova had no intention of testing that theory. Nothing else seemed feasible, so now expecting a gruesome fate to befall her, Nova decided to show the man her face with courage, though she felt much less now than she did setting out on this self made quest.  She reached her fingers up to the latches that held the puppets hatch closed and with trembling hands attempted to undo the locking mechanism. Her normally adept fingers fluttered with her terror and slipped over the clasp several times before she was able to properly undo it. She pushed upwards, the joints folding smoothly and the metal shield laying flat against the puppets body and she stared up at the man who held her puppet in place with her wide green eyes.

He wore a solemn expression, without much emotion running across it. His eyes seemed to analyze her in but a moment, while she was still locked in place an unable to move. White robes flowed from his shoulders, blue trim along the sleeves, and his silvery white hair fell flat down his back and shoulders and was quite long. She gasped and shrunk away from the man, the feeling of being stalked now replaced with the feeling of a fly trapped neatly in a spiders trap, waiting for the spider to sink its fangs into its silk wrapped prey. She ended the chakra threads that flowed from her fingers in a brilliant green, expecting the puppet to drop to the floor. The anticipated thunk of the puppet hitting the ground however, never came, as the figure who seemed to emerge from the air's long fingered hand still tightly wrapped around Kurogokegamu's leg suspending it in the air. Her fingers now shaking so bad that she struggled with what she tried to do, Nova reached to her hips and legs and began to unhook the latches that held her firmly in place in the puppet. After a moment of scrambling and scratching at the latches to release her she slid up to a sitting position and gripped the edge of the hull of her puppet so hard her knuckles turned white. Her head now almost even with the tall man's, she tried to meet his intimidating gaze with her soft green one. She was able to maintain eye contact for just a moment, before she felt as though she would lose herself and looked down at her hands and waited for her demise.

Sero would watch her with a steady gaze. Hell hidden behind those grey orbs. There were few in the world that could reach him and fewer still who could conquer him. This being was not yet on this list. He had known passion few times in his life but when it came to fruition it was a terrible and great event. One of the few things that held a key to that doorway was his children. Beings only come to life through their connection to him and in a way extensions of himself. His true being much like a spider itself. Far more spider than he was man. The world broken down easily for him into what was prey and what was not. Those who threatened his territory often fell under the category of prey. He was unsure as to this one though. Some basic form of infiltration? A shell meant to mimic or mock his brood? He knew not her intentions but she had trespassed despite the warnings he knew she must have received. The world could fear him somewhat but anyone who made it this far rarely did so without the knowledge that they were no longer in the realm of man.

He could feel her within. Feel her chakra waning away from his own out of fear. A dark thing pulsing as she fumbled about. Still he did not move. Patient as he listened to her fingers scraping to obey him. He could feel her fear like an intoxicating perfume. At least it was to him. He played with his prey because fear was something he rarely felt. Something that made his blood boil and excited him when so little else did. To pull that from others allowed him to feel power and control. Still she would finally pop the latch to her puppet. As it opened he noted a young girl. The smell of food within was interesting. A mixture of everyone one might need and more to travel comfortably. How far had she come? There were hints of other smells as well. The entire puppet smelled as if she lived in the small space...there were hints of desert sands and river waters as well as she smelled of some sort of scented soap. She was unique and foreign. If he had to surmise the make and design of the puppet was beyond that of anyone from Kiri. A clan from another country...the desert sands suggested Suna.

She would unclip herself as well before she moved up into a sitting position. A young woman by the look of her. For a moment she tried to hold his gaze but failed as she looked away. She seemed so small even as she was nearly eye level with him. Still his hand held her firmly by the puppet. He knew one thing of them and that was that a puppet was the ultimate type of weapon. A dozen attacks capable of happening all at once. His eyes shifted to her fingers which seemed unsteady. How much would they have to move to attack at this range? If they twitched in the wrong way would he react violently? He supposed he could stop her from moving entirely if he wished. His chakra alone enough to hold her in place. However he wished for two simple answers. So he would let just a tiny amount of katon chakra seep out. In the wet and cold air it began to feel slightly warmer. She would notice the warmth and then the light even looking down. Passed her face fell a single slow wisp of katon chakra. Like snow, bits of flame slowly drizzled around them. The door and the stone around them seemed unaffected as did his robes and her puppet but it was now raining fire around them. Commanding her attention as he spoke once more. Like stone grinding on stone. Slow and without emotion.

"You trespass on my home. Doing so in a contraption like this is and odd choice. I smell the village on you, which means you had to have been warned not to come her foreigner. As such for your own well being you will answer two questions with clarity and honesty. Who are you? Your full name and origins. As for the second question, do you come as a spider to mock this place or to infiltrate it?"

Nova held as still as possible as his eyes surveyed her, first her face and then her hands, which were fidgeting from fear. Though she was unsure if there was any jutsu actually at work against her here, she felt his power lingering in the air. The air around her grew warm and dry despite the mist the hung in the sky, flecks of light dancing about materializing from the air. The sparks from the sky warmed her skin but did not burn, and within seconds she was in a swirling firestorm of light. Her eyes felt glued in place at the mans face, unable to avert her attention or gaze elsewhere. "You trespass on my home. Doing so in a contraption like this is and odd choice. I smell the village on you, which means you had to have been warned not to come her foreigner. As such for your own well being you will answer two questions with clarity and honesty. Who are you? Your full name and origins. As for the second question, do you come as a spider to mock this place or to infiltrate it?" , The mans voice was commanding.

Nova spoke quickly and softly, though her words were clear, “My name is Nova Makato. I am from the destroyed village of Suna. I now live in the village of Kiri, though just recently. As far as why I come here.... I was intrigued by the rumors of what resided here on this island, though I was advised against it my curiosity got the better of me. My puppet has no purpose to be used against you or your kin.... this is merely my puppet Kurogokegamu. I am.... a cripple... and my puppet makes up for my lack of mobility. Spiders are truly a wondrous type of creature...” Nova's gaze was locked to his, but she clumsily climbed out of the puppet to stand before him. He stood tall over her, but she stood with her back straight. She was dressed comfortably, thin soft cotton leggings hugging her legs to just under the knees, except her left leg where the cotton was bunched against the top of her wooden prosthetic leg. She wore a simple tank top with a silk kimono untied over it, a deep emerald green with the sleeves spotted with small spiders. Nova leaned over and adjusted the buckle that held the prosthetic in place so it was more comfortable. Straightening up, Nova smoothed her wrinkled outfit and met the gaze now with a more confident outlook. She intended no ill will and believed that this man before her would see that. Though he was intimidating and more powerful than anyone she recalled meeting, it seemed as though he was more protective and solitary than straight out seeking death and destruction.

“ If I may,” Nova stuck out her hand in offer to shake his should he accept, “What do you prefer to be known as?”. Nova tried hard to meet his gaze without the fear she felt before, and she felt more at ease. She was aware that he could dispatch her without a second though, though he had not yet. Nova had provided no more a reason to do so that she had when she arrived unexpectedly and the man had still given the option to give her reasons to be here and who she was. Had he no intention of letting her survive, she suspected that he would have killed her without bothering with the courtesy of speaking to her at all. “I will admit... I am unsure why I came here. I felt like it called to my soul to explore here. I have gotten... a good many unsavory looks and comments in town due to my puppets form.... I know I will never find someone else in the same position as me but I had hoped perhaps there would be some here who might understand” Nova felt uncomfortable and crazy trying to explain herself to this man who likely neither cared nor had the slightest inkling of interest in her. “ I do promise however I had no ill intent coming here.... I wasn't even certain I would find this place. I just felt as though I had to try”

Spiders are truly a wondrous type of creature...”

He would listen as she spoke quickly in response to his inquiries. Answering both of them and more. She wished to obey his commands it would seem. So her name was Nova Makato. Not a clan name he was familiar with. Though the destruction of the village of Suna was news that just now reached him. Perhaps he was a little to detached from the world for that to be true. However he didn't seem to feel much towards it regardless of the suggestion of lives lost. Destruction always left bodies in its wake. The greater the destruction the greater the number of bodies. So she was a survivor from the destruction of her home. Moving to the strongest nation in hopes of...protection perhaps? As for her reason for coming to the island it was just curiosity. Her different abilities for survival seemed to conflict with one another. She had escaped destruction only to seek out a place known for it. What an odd creature. Still she would emerge from the construct that carried her around. A design for mobility. He supposed the statement at least was accurate. Still he noted something he had never seen before on anyone besides Gin. She too being from Suna. A prosthetic limb.

He was cautious of that even as she adjusted her clothes and the limb itself. It appeared so normal but he had an experience that stated otherwise with a prosthetic. He had seen perhaps one of the most powerful ones in the world in action and could not hope to break free from it. He tilted his head as she stood tall. Regaining her composure as she held out her hand to him. Inquiring of what to call him. His reaction was less than friendly. One moment he had been standing there holding her puppet by the leg and the next he was no longer holding it. He was simply gone. Like a wisp of mist he was no more. As if he were but a spirit haunting her in the moment. However behind her she might feel a slight touch as he ran a thin hand through the edge of her hair. Contemplating if she was simply too sheltered for what the manor held. Was she a fighter or was she bound to flee like so many others? Still he would speak in the same toneless voice. Bidding her to listen all the same.

"I am known as lord of this manor. Lord Osada. Such is my title, should you prove to be more than the average it may change to captain. Let us not get ahead of ourselves though."

He would listen as she continued all the same. Moving in a slow circle now around her. “I will admit... I am unsure why I came here. I felt like it called to my soul to explore here. I have gotten... a good many unsavory looks and comments in town due to my puppets form.... I know I will never find someone else in the same position as me but I had hoped perhaps there would be some here who might understand. I do promise however I had no ill intent coming here.... I wasn't even certain I would find this place. I just felt as though I had to try” He would turn his head and make a growling noise in the direction of the village. Already they let their fear of his children rule them. After he had done them the favor of cutting off the only way across the waters and began receiving his monthly supplies by docks. That they would shun anything even remotely like his creation was mocking to him. How much would he offer to them as they spat on his designs....Still he would stop pacing as he stood between her and the door again. His grey eyes seemed to stare through her. The wind seemed to die down and the color in the world slowly seemed to fade away under his chakra. All was still and grey now around them. As if the world had been paused in a black and white image only they could move within. It was a disorienting effect but one his chakra demanded. Life itself of every type short of her beating heart and bated breath was called to be still as he spoke.

"So now you have come this far, made it to the doorway. Few would say as much. You could turn back now and claim a great deal. Perhaps even impress the locals. However there is another path, another way. If you know nothing else in life to strive for perhaps it is time to study death. Would you turn away from those who live in fear? Turn away and find your own hidden promise steel spider Nova? All you have to do is but to ask and the doors to a different future may open for you. However do not do this lightly...if you ask of this it is done with a price....one you will discover one day when all is silent around you."
