Nova had recently began an investigation into a series of rumors that she had heard involving a nearby island and a race of monstrous spiders. The first mentions she had heard of such a thing were drawn upon her arrival to the new village and the arachnoid design that she had used for Kurogokegamu. She had overheard many comments about it, and concern expressed because of the fear they had for the aforementioned island dwellers. A terror tinged their words, and when she tried to ask further they would hush her and try to slip past the conversation as though it never happened. Nova however, had a different response to those hushed words, she became more intrigued by the concept. A race of human sized spiders she though, looking at Kurogokegamu, she had a strong desire to explore the rumors of the barren island and its inhabitants. Even more than the spiders, the spider sage who was known to live there was a person of great interest to her, though she did not know if she actually wanted to meet him in person.
Besides her noted interest, one of the activities she had grown to love in her now-destroyed home village was wandering the wilds surrounding the city with her taste for exploration. She had found many secrets in the desert, and longed for a bit of the peace of being alone with her puppet. She had not yet gotten a chance to explore the land around her new village, and found the mist that seemed a constant presence was soothing to her. She set plans to leave the next morning, early but not before tea, and have enough supplies packed for a two day journey there and back. It had been quite some time before she had had a journey such as this with her puppet and she was excited for it. “camping came quite easy for her, as she neither had to carry along a tent, nor set one up. When it came time to sleep she curled up inside of Kurogokegamu, on the plentiful cushions that are inside, close it up and be quite cozy. She prepped the night before, packing several days worth of provisions; pieces of crusty breads, a selection of dried and seasoned meats, soft and hard cheeses, fruits and berries, and of course her favorite snack mochi into a large picnic basket that fit snugly in Kurogokegamus storage compartment she had inside. She has recently picked up a few large waterskins as well, with this adventure in mind. Three of those she filled with water, and as she herself did not have to exert herself much through traveling in her puppet, she figured that would be plenty. In the fourth waterskin, she filled it with a sweet, strong wine that mad her head spin with just a few sips.
She woke long before dawn the next morning, a combination of being unable to sleep for excitement, and desire to get going early in the day. Recalling she had not shoved any clothes into the puppet, she tossed in a pair of shorts, a warm oversized sweater, a pair of leggings, and a tank top. and a blanket as well. For today, she threw on a pair of shorts, and a loose, soft sweater that hung so low it nearly covered the shorts. Without delay, she headed off to her favorite place in all of Kiri, “Peaches and Cream Tea Room” for her last cup of lavender tea before she set off. She left Kurogokegamu just outside the door, everything latched up and packed, and settled in to one of the places signature over sized chair, most of them with a hideously aged floral pattern. She smiled and waved at the waitress that she now recognized, and when asked if she was ordering her regular she nodded, a yawn breaking out at the same time. Within minutes, her cup of steaming lavender honey tea was in her hands being sipped at, a bear claw half eaten on the plate beside her. She inhaled the warm, home-y scent and smiled, excited for the coming days. Sipping down the remainder of the soothing beverage, and stuffing her mouth with the last two bites of her pastry she was ready to leave. Waving at the waitress goodbye, Nova hopped inside of the puppet, latched herself in, and set off.
She emerged from the city walls to a fog filled valley. Nova had recalled upon her journey from Suna to here that the land was spotted with lakes and rivers, and the mist seemed to never break. It made her feel sealed off from the world, and the noises that she heard sounded much further off than they likely were. The birds that sung for the rising sun echoed eerily and they sounded far apart. Nova sat upright in her puppet as she had it stride along the rocky ground, the mist gathering in beads on her puppets shell, and she felt her face and hair become faintly damp as it clung to her as well. Along with the mist the air smelt earthy, and damp. Though it was not a familiar scent, it was a pleasant one, one that she hoped would replace the smell of the hot desert as her comforting scent. Her journey the first day was uneventful, pleasant, and quiet. She had passed by several lakes, though none of them large enough to house an island. The first night, she had found a small cove besides one of those lakes and decided to camp there. Nova sat down beside the water to eat her meal, dancing the toes from her right foot across the surface of the cool pool. It was an enjoyable evening, and she had almost drifted off laying besides the water before shivering from the cool air and curled up inside the puppet with her blanket.
The next morning she woke early, and decided to bathe in the pool before she set off. She stripped bare and stepped into the cool pool to wash the sleep from her body, the chill running up her spine and waking her up quickly. After just a moment of the brisk water, she stepped out, dried herself with the blanket she brought, and threw on a pair of leggings and a tank top, and her kimono with spider embroidery. She ran a comb through her hair and set off again, hoping to find the island by noon. Just as every day the thick mist hovered in the air, though something felt odd to Nova, not anything noticeable to make her question it, just enough for her to have a slight knot in her stomach. Though she could not pick it out, the hair on the back of her neck stood and it felt as though there was something or someone who could see her though she could not see them.
It was barely eleven in the morning when Nova came upon a large expanse of water, and though visibility was low she thought she saw a sort of mass in the center. To her left was a tall red Torri gate, scorched in several places, with a road leading to a broken bridge crossing the lake. This was the closest thing to the descriptions she had heard that she had seen thus far. She debated for a moment as how to cross, the gate and bridge giving her a feeling of unease, then slid down inside of her puppet closing the hatch on the top. Her puppet was watertight as long at the hatch was closed and the tube through which she could reload her puppets cannon was slid shut as well. Channeling chakra to see through her puppets eyes, her vision blurred before reappearing, vision based from the eyes of her puppet. The puppet moved onwards, the thin legs sending ripples against the smooth lake before the body was submerged. Sliding into the water the puppet skittered along the sandy lake bed, Nova entranced by the way the flora that thrived beneath the water fluttered to a current that was not visible along the surface. There was an ecosystem that flourished here in the chilly waters, that she might have never known about but for this adventure.
The lake was large, and it took nearly half an hour to cross the body of water before breaking back to the air. Nova found herself on a barren, and frankly spooky looking shore. The island itself was covered in skeletal trees and the husks of underbrush. Some look singed, others looked as though life had just left them of its own accord. Her gut was doing backflips and she had a feeling that she couldn't shake, though she was prey for some great beast that was beyond her vision. She hoped that this sensation was just a result of listening to the rumors and letting them worm their way into her mind. The road that continued from the other side of the bridge was here as well, getting narrower and weaving its way between a thick forest of the bare trees, each one coated with a thick layer of webbing. The webs indicated that she was in fact in the right place, and unable to shake the feeling she had of being watched, Kurogokegamu skitter forward, still safe inside its hard shell. The mist was heavier here than before, obscuring all but a few feet in front of her down the path. Road weaving between trees, the path came to a black, wrought iron fence, spikes atop it. There was a sign posted on the menacing gate warning trespassers away, though Nova saw nothing to enforce such a thing.
Mist still heavy, Nova thought she could make out the road crawling up a large hill encompassed by this fence. A face of determination now etched on her face she led Kurogokegamu up and over the fence, continuing up the barren hill. There were far fewer trees here, though the ones that were were as dead as the ones on the other side of the fence, also adorned with the spiders silk. As she ascended the mist lightened, revealing a tall building, or more accurately a castle sat atop the hill. The closer she came the more elegancy and eccentricity she could see, the manor towered over her, a belltower and two archer's towers stabbing into the sky. The road led straight up to the building, through an extravagant garden with plant life Nova had no hope of recognizing, along with two ornate fountains on either side of the pathway up. She felt as though the building itself were staring down at her as a meal as she approached the solid oak doors, two round knockers protruding from the wood. Not leaving the safety of the interior of her puppet, she held her breath, raised a single spindly leg and pulled back the knocker, letting it fall against the door loudly. Her breath still held in her throat, she awaited a response.
