Gemma

D-rank
Mission Taken – Who Let The Dogs Out (D-Rank):

A light knock on her door caused the young woman to stir from the slumber that had claimed her nearly ten hours prior. She shifted beneath the sheet and blanket that covered her form, blinking sleepily as her eyes opened and attempted to focus and to adjust to the dim light of the room – the only source of which was a single beam of sun peaking through the slit between her curtains. Thinking she had almost imagined the soft noise she was about to let sleep claim her once more when she heard it again and lifted her head up and off of the pillow. ”Come in, please.”, she called out, only having to wait a fraction of a second before she watched the door get opened quietly and her great grandmother peak her head in. Even still sleepily blinking Gemma sat up on her bed, moving to stand up and walk over when she realized she was quite tangled in the bedding. Her grandmother simply chuckled at her as she wandered over, waving her hand to indicate it wasn’t necessary that Gemma get up. Gemma gave up on struggling with her blankets and simply watched as Grandma made her way over and sat down on the bed next to her.

“Good morning, dear.”

”Good morning, Grandma.”, Gemma said with a smile, stifling a yawn with the back of her hand as she did so: being around her great grandparents made her happier than she had been in a while, so she loved their company – even if she was still half asleep and fighting the pull to return to the dream world.

Her grandmother chuckled at her before raising a hand and gently moving a strand of hair out of Gemma’s face – a gesture that once had made her flinch but now only caused her to smile more. “I’m sorry to disturb you from what clearly was an exciting dream considered the way you’ve tied yourself all up, but a scroll was delivered for you about ten minutes ago; it looks official so I didn’t want to wait to give it to you.” When she finished speaking Gemma watched as her great grandmother pulled a scroll, the one she had mentioned, from a hidden pocket of the sleeve of her kimono. She handed it to Gemma who took it automatically, before ruffling the youngers hair with another chuckle. Grandma stood up and walked to the bedroom door, leaving Gemma to unseal the scroll and read through it quickly enough, pausing only to call back over her shoulder, “Breakfast will be ready in five minutes”, before closing the door behind herself. Gemma meanwhile read over the scroll’s contents; a D rank mission – some dogs had escaped from one of the local kennels and they needed to be tracked down. The dogs were the distinct collars from the kennel so they’d be easy enough to spot.

Throwing the covers off of herself Gemma bounded across the room, almost tripping and having to right herself at the last second, and grabbed up the outfit she had picked out for the day off of her dresser. She dressed quickly before heading into the kitchen where breakfast was done. She ate quickly, much to her grandparents amusement, before kissing them both on the cheek and rinsing off her dishes before heading out the door. She stopped by the kennel, grabbing five harnesses and five leashes, figuring that would make her task all that much easier.

With equipment in hand she headed out in search of the five dogs. The first one was easy enough to spot as it was attempting to steal food from a merchants cart – the merchant chuckling as he tried to shoo away the otherwise friendly dog. Gemma approached, harness and leash in hand only to find herself thoroughly licked when the dog spotted her. Giggling she slipped the harness onto the dog, clipping it into place and attaching the leash so that the dog wouldn’t get loose again. She waved goodbye to the merchant and then continued on. The next dog she found while still wandering through the market, a larger dog who was attempting to get some food out of one of the garbage cans of a local bar. She headed over, patting the dog on its head to grab its attention before slipping a harness on it as well and attaching a leash so that the dog couldn’t escape.

Her journey took her towards the edge of the market before she found the third dog simply rolling around in a puddle. The dog went to jump on her, Gemma side stepping quickly to avoid being covered in mud. She held her hand out, cuing the dog to sit which he did. After making quick work with the harness and leash again she carried on, three dogs now in tow.

The last two she found together, playing around with a third in someone’s yard – much to the owners amusement. Once Gemma approached the two dogs ran over to her, knowing her the same as the other three from her time helping out in the kennels. She hooked those two up as well, making her way back to the kennel with all five dogs along with her. The trip was, thankfully, an uneventful one even with five dogs to contend with all at once. Once she made it to the kennel she turned the dogs over, her mission complete – and headed off to seek out her payment for her job well done.
