Clan History: A genetic trait that surfaces in random individuals causes them to have body seals on their forearms, where their arms meet their shoulders, and on their feet and ankles. These are the hallmarks of this all-but-forgotten clan; a sect in the Third Shinobi World War that mastered the art of defense and retribution. Thought to be wiped out in one of the earlier battles, some of their kind escaped, and condensed their teachings into scrolls, spirited across the world. Those who would carry on these teachings eventually developed what would become trademarks of this clan. The body seals react when a clan sect scroll is near, so those within the clan never lead a life without its teachings, and very often learn of them before they ever become ninja. Like its ancestry, this clan is sparse, with members being few and far between. They seem to not have existed at all, as their predecessors would have hoped, for power crushes those who do not actively use it. This, the clan had feared, and so the Kekkei Genkai had gone into remission. A select few still manifest it, though they may not know of their lineage even after they read the scrolls. It is rare for any to know of this Kekkei Genkai, it being so thoroughly unrelated in history. It is more often thought of as a Hiden (to which all its techniques belong).

Kekkei Genkai Description: Those with the Hōhenō Bloodline never directly assault their opponents. They are all experts at using the opponent's force against them. They're known for their malleable chakra signatures, which they use to do this. Clansmen often have a 'feel' for techniques, which lets them naturally counter a bit better.
- Clan Taijutsu Style:
- Clansmen use an exclusive style called Shikidō; it is heard of only in lore, and as such is quite unfamiliar to most ninja of this age. It is a Hybrid style that takes bits from Jeet Kune-do and Aikido. Those who use this style of Taijutsu can have their Endurance increased instead of the normal stat at each respective Taijutsu stat boost level.
Masters stress the principle of stances-without-stances, being especially difficult to read due to last-minute reactions, not wasting any time or energy in their movement. It places extreme priority on defense, teaching that attacking is only for after one is safe from harm; many of their attacks come tandem, almost simultaneously, with their defending. It is simultaneously an external and internal style, as well as a hard and soft style, being able to switch from flowing with an opponent's movements to straight-on blocking.
Its first line of defense is redirection and evasion; if one can make an attack target a less vulnerable body part or divert the attack from the body entirely, this is optimal for a user of Shikidō. Their second line of defense is blocking, though less preferable as it makes it more difficult to counter the opponent in some situations.
What few striking maneuvers it does have are mostly aimed towards making the opponent flinch or stagger, or knocking the breath out of them; that being said, they are not always directly the most damaging, due to only wanting to subdue opponents. Kicks are less common in this style, as standing one's ground is more important than attacking here. That being said, they are reserved for finishers and the like, and are likely some of their most powerful direct attacks. Palm strikes with the front and the back of the hand are used, as well as an occasional elbow or knee in correct situations.
Grappling and throws are usually some of, if not the only form of unprovoked attack adherents of this style are permitted to use. That being said, the aim is to deliver attacks that will prevent the opponent from moving or otherwise being a threat to others, but not be in any way fatal or irreparable.

- An overreaching theme of the Hiden and its teachings; this can be added to defensive jutsu that have no other effect.
Hōhenō clansmen can choose for their defensive techniques to redirect, rather than block, attacks. By doing so, they can counter their opponents, often giving the opponent little time to react. Attacks that are countered are, on average, 5 m/s faster than normal (10 at Jounin). In addition, they do slightly more damage; what would be negligible (E-rank) damage if inflicted alone (D at Jounin). - It costs no extra chakra to counter, but they can only do so with the first jutsu the technique is capable of blocking, and it expends the remaining defense count.

- Their intense, dogmatic training teaches them to watch for any signs of danger at all times. They gain a +1 to Reaction Time and Perception, and may or may not be regarded as paranoid if they don't hide this well.
They focus immensely on physical prowess; their natural body seals boost their abilities and limits, adding to the clan's training of core tenets for a 10% discount off of Stats training.
Their harsh katas and traditions prepare them for even further training; they can train their fourth specialization to A-rank. This takes 15000 words.
- Natural Armor:
- Certain scrolls containing the clan secrets are rarer than others; these often contain the well-kept secrets of advanced body hardening techniques; this training allows the bodies of clansmen to be durable like no other. Natural Armor's ryo cost comes from training materials; not only to train it initially, but to keep one's body tough. Missions can be used to train Natural Armor, but not as a substitute for its Ryo cost.
- Clansmen can apply for Natural Armor as Light Armor, but then cannot wear other Armor other than a Hitai-ate. Armored parts of the body can be as small as the clan member desires, but each Natural Armor can only be as large as a single limb or half the torso. If the user applies for Natural Armor on a part of the body that is already covered, they can reduce the size of the existing armor to accommodate it.
- When a clan member is both B-rank and able to use A-rank Taijutsu techniques, a 3000-word thread can be undertaken detailing the finding and studying of a more advanced scroll, in order to gain Natural Armor equal to Heavy Armor.
Training cannot be used for anything but social threads. - If you decide to train the Heavy Armor version, it does not stack with your old Light Armor version. You can upgrade the Light Armor to Heavy Armor for 500 extra Ryo at B-rank (1000 at A, 1500 at S). Alternatively, if you have not yet trained Natural Armor, Heavy Armor versions cost 250 more ryo at D-rank, +250 more at every rank up.
- You can retrain each rank of Natural Armor from the last similar to enchanting, so long as it is the same type (Light/Heavy) after the retrain.

- Clansmen can apply for Natural Armor as Light Armor, but then cannot wear other Armor other than a Hitai-ate. Armored parts of the body can be as small as the clan member desires, but each Natural Armor can only be as large as a single limb or half the torso. If the user applies for Natural Armor on a part of the body that is already covered, they can reduce the size of the existing armor to accommodate it.
Drawbacks: Members of this clan cannot have jutsu that damage the opponent without the opponent having attacked (the clansmen or an ally) first; in other words, they can only ever counterattack. This applies for all specializations. Starting a chain of attacks from one counterattack is acceptable.
They are forbidden to use even the simplest metal or wooden weapons like kunai and shuriken, in the same ways as all other jutsu and attacks are limited; they refuse to train in Bukijutsu at all. The one weapon type they can use is Metsubushi.
Clansmen also cannot use Striking attacks on foes except when countering; they similarly are restricted in Grapple/throwing attacks, but are allowed to subdue and/or restrain opponents using any means available without provocation, so long as they are not causing damage to the opponent's body.
They take a -2 to Strength for Striking attacks such as punches and kicks, for the purpose of physical damage against other people.
The maximum physical damage Shikidō can do with any Taijutsu basic attack or non-chakra Taijutsu maneuver, is major bruising/internal bleeding and tendon/ligament damage.
Hōhenō, stressing physical prowess so much, forbid the training of a defensive technique if one's physical statistics are not all of the same rank. (Tier-3 of 1 rank lower counts for jutsu of 1 rank higher than the ninja.)
~In addition, due to stressing physical prowess, if a clansmen has Natural Armor, they cannot have wearable armor save for their Hitai-ate.
Despite having body seals marking them as who and what they are, clansmen are all initially inept at Fūinjutsu. They cannot take it as a primary or secondary specialty.
Members of this clan believe that to have a staunch defense, one must be fully learned and confident in one's abilities. As such, all clansmen take the Hesitant (Element) Special Characteristic and are unable to balance it.

[b]Description:[/b] Members of the Hōhenō clan are directly opposed to using violence to solve problems. They will personally attempt to solve a situation via stealth, negotiation, or other means until the moment they see a sign of violence, direct or to come. They will never throw the first punch, so to speak, in battle; they will only attack if the opponent visibly threatens or directly attacks the user, an ally, or someone the user is charged with protecting. This makes them terribly unsuited for sneak attacks and the like.
