- After the first ninja war with Madara and Hashirama, there were many clans which went on to found the villages hidden in the various areas, such as the leaf village, the cloud village, the sand village and so forth. The Katonrai, headed by Raitho Katonrai, were asked by the Raikage to join his village after the war. Raitho and the Raikage had fought on the same field of battle, waging war against the other villages with the might of their lightning. The Raikage renowned for his taijutsu and ninjutsu, whereas the Katonrai clan was known for their explosive lightning techniques, said to be devastating for the other villages as a long ranged attrition type. The Katonrai had their fair share of Bukijutsu users, along with medical ninjutsu, however, all members of the clan were able to harness their chakra in the form of an explosive lightning bolt.
Because of this jutsu, and their hard-to-miss physical characteristics, the Katonrai found it easier to live amongst other Raiton users than others, and were said to have a disadvantage when fighting in the rain, as it would make their jutsu sporadic and fail more frequently than they would hope. Fighting in the village hidden in the rain, the Katonrai clan used more taijutsu, Bukijutsu, and medical ninjutsu than their kekkei genkai. More of the clan died there than at any other point in the great ninja war. After Kumogakure was founded by the Raikage, the Katonrai were stationed at the perimeters as long range artillery users to keep out unwanted ninja from the village. They were stationed at chokepoints where their special jutsu would be most utilized, and in the cavernous, canyon ridden country that Kumogakure was built, The Katonrai were able to utilize the chokepoints to their advantage, keeping most enemies at bay aided by the use of their long-range jutsu.
Raitho Katonrai established a dojo for his family to train with other Katonrai users, and established the family as one of the families that guards Kumogakure. The family has yet to have a rogue ninja in its lineage, and has been one of the most faithful houses to the Raikage. Each time that a new Raikage is elected, each member tithes 10% of their total wealth to the Raikage as a sign of their loyalty. They have always served in either the guard that secures the city, guards at Athos’ keep, or the Special Forces by the Raikage’s side.

- The members of the Katonrai clan have a distinctive scar that trails from the tops of their heads to either the right or left big toe and can vary in length and scar area. This scar can be used to identify a specific member of the Katonrai clan from afar, as it usually covers some of the face or exposed neck area. Members of this clan have command over the element of lightning insomuch as it forms a symbiotic bond with them. Their hair stands on end, no matter the length, and is a distinctive white color. Their eyes are always electric blue and their tongues a purplish color. The scars that they have are white no matter the color of the skin that the individual has, and do not tan.
The members of the Katonrai clan are well-versed in the ways of Raiton jutsu, and use it to effect enemies in a radius from their initial blast, though their lightning has no penetration.
Katonrai clansmen have either Jutsu master, Ace eye, or both as their starting positive characteristics.
Their kekkei genkai jutsu is the essence of "heat lightning" the phenomenon of lightning that is drawn from the stagnant heat in the air charging the electrons, rather than the wet air. Katonrai are fast, mobile artillery, but cannot usually withstand a hit. They sacrifice endurance for speed, accuracy, and control over explosive plasma (lightning).
The Katonrai clan usually have their feet planted firmly when they perform their jutsu, which make them easy targets when activating their Kekkei genkai. While this may be true, their jutsu is more than enough to keep most enemies at bay for a short time, or long enough for help to come.
Katonrai thrive in groups with a heavy hitting taijutsu user at the forefront, and most of the clan has a stake in medical ninjutsu as their secondary focus, as they are willing to stay in the back-lines and support their fore-running ninja brothers and sisters.
The main drawback of having a Katonrai in a team is their explosive tendencies, as they are prone to have a short fuse, and are likely to hit their allies if not careful with their jutsu in battle.
More than likely if one sees a "bolt out of the blue" it is a Katonrai user, and forest fires set from lightning strikes? Probably a Katonrai user as well. They make for excellent guards, with their long-range jutsu, and are stationed in points that need defending more often than not. Their specialization in long range jutsu means that they have to trade off on their short-range abilities, usually deferring those to the taijutsu or Bukijutsu primary users. They can pick up a weapon, but their frail nature means that they are well-suited to the back-lines of defense as a "first strike" sort of ninja.

Due to their ability, they wish to use their ninjutsu as far away from their own bodies as possible, and so from a very young age are told that they should only use weapons that utilize range to its fullest potential. May only use mid-long range weaponry, such as two-handed weapons and ranged weapons.
Cannot use Fuuinjutsu or Kuchiyose
All Katonrai users have their endurance penalized by 1 (-1 endurance rank)
If addressed by a member of a higher rank than the clansman, and the ninja is part of Kumogakure, they must answer truthfully. members can choose to omit part of the truth, but clan members usually are more loyal than other Kumogakure clans and have a strong sense of duty to those members above them.
Must take “foolhardy” as a detriment. (Negative characteristic) cannot be balanced by a positive characteristic.
Katonrai users are more afraid of the rain than anything, as it reduces the effectiveness of most of their innate kekkei genkai. (see Jutsu) If the current weather is rainy, the ninja’s kekkei genkai is reduced in power.
Katonrai users may not delve into Doton techniques.

Description: After making the appropriate hand signs (Tiger, rat, dragon, snake) The user claps their hands together, or claps a hand on their weapon, creating an electrical field that hums on their palms and pushes towards the opposing being. A wave of energy issues forth from their palms and explodes on impact, singing the victim for first degree burns on the affected areas, and causing their muscles to spasm, jettisoning them away from the user up to 1 meter away. Costs 20 chakra.

Description: The user of the jutsu, after making the appropriate hand signs (Tiger, rat, dragon, ox, snake), pulls their hands over their head, letting lightning spike from one hand to another for a short time. The user must stand flat on a surface before channeling this jutsu, during, and after for one post, so as to remain grounded, if they do not they take internal shock damage. After they pull their hands away from each other for a moment they clap them together and point at their desired target, releasing an arc of destructive lightning at their target. The damage and effects are as follows:
E: minor burns, stops the enemy from movement in midair. Cost: 5 chakra
D: minor 1st degree burns, pushes the enemy away 1 meter from the epicenter of the blast. Cost: 12 chakra.
C: Major 1st degree burns, pushes enemy away 2 meters from the epicenter of the blast: Cost 17 chakra.
B: Major 2nd degree burns, pushes enemy away 4 meters from the epicenter of the blast: cost 25 chakra.
A: Major 3rd degree burns within 5 meters of epicenter or on direct hit, minor 2nd degree burns 12 meters from the epicenter, pushes enemy away 6 meters from the epicenter of the blast. Costs 40 chakra

Description: The user, after making the appropriate hand signs (Tiger, rat, snake), slaps their hands together and channels the heat lightning energy into their hands or blades, giving themselves minor first degree burns on the first and second post, major first degree burns on the third and fourth posts. This technique allows the user to temporarily increase the burning and electrocution abilities of their melee damage, while sacrificing their own endurance. Their attacks count as more grave than they were, inflicting more severe burns than normal, or inflicting burns equal to minor 2nd degree burns on the first two posts, minor 3rd degree burns on the following two posts. This also increases the range of their weapon or hands by an additional 2 meters, as the lightning manifests as a blade (with a closed fist), claws (open hand), or an extension of the weapon. Cost: 25 chakra, additional 10 chakra per turn.
Addendum: the abilities of the Katonrai clan that are kekkei genkai have this detriment: if the weather is: rainy, their effects are lessened by one damage rank to a minimum of no damage dealt to the enemy. The Katonrai kekkei genkai cannot be used underwater, if used underwater, they deal the damaging effects to the caster, and if an area of effect is on the spell, they are affected by the blast. When it is raining their abilities move 5m/s slower per tier of the jutsu. This cannot make the jutsu move slower than 1m/s
