Chapter 1
4 days was all that was given for the entire nation of Kirigakure to prepare for war. It was during this time that the nation was as busy is Hachiko had honestly ever seen it. Food was being moved around the nation like a mad house, mostly going to the port to load the armed ships. Blacksmiths were working to points of near exhausting smithing weapons and armour for those who would set sail, and even though Ayakashi had only stated that she would be taking a mere two thousand men and women to the land of Kumogakure, to Hachiko's homeland to fight a head on invasion. There was still so much supplies being moved. That said, this could mainly be attributed to the small time frame which Ayakashi had set. 4 days to be prepared for a full scale invasion of another land. Sure the country would be assisted by neighboring nations, but 4 days was still a very small window. However that didn't mean Kirigakure was disheartened at all. After Ayakashi's moving and empowering speech and Akira's speech that followed. The nation was more than ever willing and able to get ready for battle as this nation had done many, many times before. Arguably more so than the other nations. And it was because of this that Kirigakure had become the power house that it was today.
Hachiko herself was just as busy as everyone else preparing for this war, as she would be one of the 2000 people moving out with the nation to invade Kumogakure. Her own home. It felt odd for her to think about that. She was going to be actively assisting in an assault on the place she loved so much. The reason why she had come to Kirigakure in the first place. But, she also wasn't a child. She knew that Sanosuke's actions weren't something that could simply be swept under the rug and were actions of war, and Kirigakure was simply responding to that. In their eyes, she, or at least the person she used to be was dead, and killed in order to protect the safety of all of those citizens of Kirigakure. But Sanosuke didn't care. In fact he would have only known 'Kaekio' had left, by the time he issued the command, and didn't even care to hear whether she had been kept dead or live. or even what had happened to her. In fact, he simply assumed that she had gone to Kirigakure. Although he had fair reason too, it still couldn't have been an action of certainty. At least not until the report of her death had come back. But none of that really mattered now. After the assault on the Ryuzoji compound he had pulled under her nose, and the complete and outright betrayal of her trust, and then to go off and pull something as bone headed as this? he had this coming miles away. Hachiko simply wished she had time to get stronger before all of this came to a head, so she could have faced Sanosuke herself. Get the personal closure she sought. But ultimately, that would not be the case and she understood this. Though to her, it still felt weird and odd gearing up for battle against her own home land. A place she loved so much that she would completely discard her own identity and life and become a martyr in order to protect it. She was now going to aid in it's, at the very least, partial, destruction. And even though she had mixed feelings about this. She was committed to the idea. She knew what it entailed. She knew it meant causing havoc and fear for those she loved. She knew it meant, killing and betraying some of her own comrades. But she also knew that it was for the good of Kumogakure no Sato. She knew that she had to do her part to make sure that Sanosuke no longer caused harm to Kumogakure or her people, even if that meant a few had to be sacrificed in the process. She wished there was another way about this. A way that didn't involve the killing of people who are simply there doing their jobs and protecting the nation she loved. But because of Sanosuke's Actions, and because of the way he played this out. Hachiko's Father figured has brought upon pain and suffering to his own nation. Not that he hadn't already done that, with the direct assault on the Ryuzoji compound, but now he was going to bring more. More pain and suffering than any Kage should ever put on their own people. Was the Kage not there to protect their people? make sure that they we all well and happy? and to provide a military force for the good of the nation, and the world if needed? These are the traits she had seen in Ayakashi. A woman so devoted to her country that Hachiko wanted to follow her words to any extent. She loved her own country, and in return her country loved her. She was a fantastic leader, and had even chosen to spare Hachiko in her time of need. Provide her a place to live, and to stay, and to train, and a place she could put her blade to use, for the good of the nation as a whole. A place she was trusted, even if she shouldn't have been. And, that's something that Hachiko always felt put off about. She had no right to be trusted, Every other sane person would have booted her out, or beheaded her on the spot if she had shown up seeking refuge, like she had for Kiri. But Ayakashi sympathized with her, She understand the nature of Hachiko's actions, and provided a way for her to express them, and even though she had no reason too. She trusted Hachiko. At least that's the way that Hachiko felt.
And so, even though it meant a number of horrible things Hachiko never wanted to think she might be committing too. Hachiko was gearing up for war against her own home. And she felt right doing it. Though that didn't mean that she didn't feel sad and empathetic for the lives that would be lost doing this battle. In fact quiet the opposite. Hachiko would probably have to mask on the entire time simply so she couldn't possibly show any emotions during the altercation. She knew this was going to be an emotion process for her, but that was also going to be a part of the gearing up for this war that she had intended to do. She would need to be at her very best in order to fight in this war. Her above anyone else. She also felt like she had the most to prove during this.
The moment after Hachiko finished her conversation with Ayakashi, she took off, having gotten leave from her current ANBU captain to go and get prepped for the coming invasion. And she would gladly use all of the spare time she could possibly get. There were some many things she needed to do, but one among them stood out in her mind. After all this time, the girl hadn't completed her sage mode training, even though she had started it almost a year ago now, she had gotten up to her sage mode and then stopped, choosing to focus on other things and get back to her country for the Chunin exams. But now that she was about to face one of the worlds few master sages, and the country with the most Senjutsu users, her as a proclaimed Sage simply couldn't just have Sage mode. She needed to be a master at it, much like everyone else who would be in that fight. Given this knowledge, Hachiko decided she would spend as much time as she could with the wolf clan of Kirigakure attempting to master Senjutsu in the short amount of time she had before the war party was departing. But before she could do that, she had a few things she needed to clean up in Kirigakure. The first of which was Nozomi. She was almost certain that the girl would be heading on the expedition as well. She really had no reason not too. In fact, the more Hachiko thought about it, She was really the only one in all of Kirigakure who had any sort of reason to not go to Kumogakure. But, that only solidified her resolve to take the fight to Sanosuke even more than she already had. As for Nozomi, sure she had been to Kumogakure, and Hachiko had shown her around, but the only real attachment that Nozomi had to Kumogakure was Hachiko herself. So she expected the girl to commit for force to her Kage and her village. Something she herself would do the the best of her ability. Because even though she felt Ayakashi trusted her, she still felt that she needed to earn that trust, and this was probably the best way to do it. Along with accomplishing her goal of removing Sanosuke from the Kage seat.
However, Hachiko had 4 days before she set off to Kumogakure no Sato, and she fully intended to utilize all four days before she set out to get herself ready, and able for combat. The biggest thing on her mind being her sage training. She would definitely go and see Ares before she left, and hopefully she could finally unlock the secrets that she needed in order to finally master her sage training, though because she had a few minor things to finish up here in Kiri, that only left her with about 2 days in total that she could spend focusing on sage training, which wasn't a lot, so she wasn't going to be terribly disappointed if she only came out without it being mastered, although she would try her best.
After having chat with her ANBU captain, Hachiko put all of her gear into a bag, and got dressed in street clothes, doing her best to suppress her Aura, though she knew it wouldn't be to much effect though she would try. Her first stop was the Iron banner of Kirigakure no Sato, the legendary smiths of the land, and those whom were basically providing the entire armory for the army of Kiri. She would head there simply to get all of her weapons and tools sharpened and repaired with the exception of her Blade of the crimson moon, as she had recently found out that the weapon repaired and sharpened it'self. As long as it had blood to feast on that was, but that wasn't really an issue. If Hachiko needed to get the cracks and dents in it repaired she could simply go out into the wilds of Kirigakure no Sato and find a boar or some other small creature and simply was the blade in it's blood. This was another reason Hachiko was fond of the blade was that she never had to clean it. The blade simply soaked in the blood of her fallen enemies, even if it didn't need it. In a way it was sort of creepy, but Hachiko had simply come to accept that.
So with her gear in her bag, Hachiko swiftly made her way a crossed Kiri, moving swiftly from street to street, sometimes at a walking pace but others times dashing quickly through the abandoned alley ways, roads, and rooftops. With this method she simply didn't seem the slight bit suspicious, aside from the aura she permuted a crossed the entire street, but she still made good time in getting to the section of the city dedicated to the Iron Banner. The place was packed busy, that's for sure. With the recently proclamation of war, Hachiko had never seen the market place so busy. Black smiths and carts moving every which way, people shouting and yelling at each other as well as just the hum of movement and activity in the area. with all of the blacksmiths hard at work. In fact the whole nation was terribly hard at work. Hachiko had to give credit to Ayakashi for being such an amazing leader. Never in her life had she seen an entire group of people so motivated. So dedicated to a cause that they all put in there best effort. Or at least most of them. And this wasn't even a small group. It was an entire village that had gathered around for this cause. A place that had already seen so much blood, and so much violence, and at the very least more war than Hachiko had seen in her life, and yet instead of making them broken and afraid of any sort of conflict, it only made them stronger, and more ready and able to defend their home and their families, and that's what this had all come down to. A big family defending it's family members, and Hachiko honestly might have found a little beauty in it, if that fact that Ayakashi could assemble an entire invasion force in just under four days wasn't so utterly terrifying. It kind of made Hachiko wonder what the other villages thought of this. Surely how quickly Ayakashi could rally support and mobilize troops had to at the very least be a little bit intimidating. Hachiko was just kind of glad that she wasn't at the other end of this, but for that reason she felt bad for her home. Her friends and her comrades in Kumogakure. Because while she might not have to be at the receiving end of this, they did, and they would have to deal with the destruction and loss while Kirigakure celebrated victory, which was almost guaranteed not only by the size and skill of Ayakashi's army, but the fact that she also had the support of two other of the 5 grand nations. Kumogakure couldn't make a counter attack before Kirigakure could react, because Konoha was stationed here, and from what Hachiko would tell, Iwagakure was going to be pinching Kumogakure in like Cattle Herders and cutting off routes of escape, and to top it all off, Ayakashi her self was going to head straight into the fray. The woman Hachiko felt could take on an army of at least a thousand Jounin and barely come out scratched, if at all. If these factors couldn't overtake Kumogakure, Well then Kumogakure might simply be the strongest nation that existed. However, Hachiko was born and raised in Kumogakure. She had been there in times of strife, and been a shinobi of Kumogakure no Sato. While she hadn't been an ANBU member, she had seen a few bit of things in Kumogakure to roughly gauge the strength of nation, and she was almost certain that this would end in Kirigakure's favor. Which lead to her next thought. If Sanosuke was no longer in the picture of Kumogakure whether dead or imprisoned or forced into exile. Hachiko would no longer have a reason to seek refuge in Kirigakure. Maybe. Just maybe. She could convince Ayakashi to let her return to her home and help pick up the pieces that were left after this invasion would happen. After all, she did come to Ayakashi to help protect the nation she loved, So if she simply destroyed it, then she would be directly going against everything she came here for, and might as well have not come, but it was also for this reason that she must go. She had to go with Ayakashi to help take down Sanosuke. Arguably, Hachiko knew Kumogakure the best. She knew the in's and out's, and thanks to her sensory she could even sense the ANBU. She had been in the village long enough to know what were the best routes to take, and which routes were a basic death trap. She had been taught what to do in case of an emergency, and while that might have changed since her departure, she doubted it would have changed much. It was she whom could have a real and direct impact on the course of this battle. Though she didn't really think Kirigakure needed her. As stated before Kirigakure had enough strength without her, and she was really nothing more than a simple jounin. But she felt like she could do so much more. However none of this would happen until after four days, and for now she needed to focus on preparing for the war.
"Is there anything i could do for you young lady?" the blacksmith asked Hachiko. She had spent a good portion of the last half hour attempting to find a blacksmith that wasn't completely swamped with work already from any other shinobi every, or just simply trying to make weapons to send with the war band to Kumogakure. Not that she could blame any of them, four days wasn't a whole lot of time, but it was still frustrating to say the least. As someone who may be deep into the territory than most other shinobi heading aboard the boats, she really had to make sure her gear was in tip top shape, because if it wasn't, she would most likely be dead. But, through thorough searching, she eventually found one who wasn't terribly swamped, and had time for a few touch up and sharpening jobs which is all she really needed.
"Yeah..." she replied swinging her bag full of gear around, pulling out all the kunai and the shuriken, as well as her Osada cloak. and handing them all tot he blacksmith. She chose to keep her ANBU gear in her bag. This man didn't need to know she was ANBU, nor what her mask looked like, and so she simply kept that stuff hidden. "I simply need all of these sharpened and what not. Nothing too demanding." the man simply chuckled, and nodded his head, and set himself to work on Hachiko's items. From the tone Hachiko had used in her voice he could tell that she simply wasn't in a chatty mood, and he could probably tell by the sword on her waist and the items that she had given him that she was a ninja heading into the war. But with that said, she really couldn't go anywhere or had anything she needed to do right at that very moment, so instead of leaving her stuff to just some random stranger Hachiko simply posted herself up, leaning on a wall, near the black smith where she could keep a cold and trained eye on him, as he slowly and methodically went through each of her kunai, and Shuriken, even polishing up her headband and making minor mends to her robe. During this time Hachiko thought about the coming war. She had actually been given very little on the battle plans thus far. Though she could probably just assume that she would be informed on the boat. That way was much safer as it limited the chance that their plans would get out to Kumogakure in time for them to set up a direct counter-attack. Which is also probably why Ayakashi only gave the entire nation 4 days to prepare for the assault. That way in case someone did warn Sanosuke ahead of time, by the time the information got there, Kirigakure would already be on Kumogakure's front door. Thinking it over that seemed to be the most logical reason as to why Ayakashi would simply leave out so many details thus far.
"Lady Mizukage... I.. I know it's really my place to make requests when you and your country have done so much for me. But, please don't kill anymore than is necessary. Most of the citizens of Kumogakure have nothing to do with this i'm sure, and haven't done anything wrong... I also have another request... I'd like to go and confront Sanosuke with you if possible." Hachiko thought back on the words she had spoke to the Mizukage at that time. She had seemed really desperate, but in all honesty she had felt really desperate. The more she thought about it, the more and more she realized how much destruction this was going to bring to thousands of innocent people, all because their Kage made a mistake, and it pained Hachiko to know that it was her comrades that were going to suffer for this. People she knew and loved. Hachiko let out a small sigh, encouraging a questioning side glance from the man that was currently finishing up Hachiko's items. She figured it was best to probably stop thinking about it. Maybe then she might actually get through this. She looked up at the man who was working on her items and was still giving her a confused glance. But, Hachiko simply said nothing as she walked over to him, and claimed her items. She then pulled some Ryo out of her pocket to pay the man for his services, but he simply raised his hand. "There's no need for that..." the man said. "You're heading over to the land of lighting correct?"" he asked, and Hachiko simply nodded in respond still semi-confused as to why he didn't want to her to pay, but it was as he began his next sentence that Hachiko began to understand. "Well then there is no need for you to pay." he laughed, but his laugh filled with sorrow. and then his eyes shot to the ground, and a look of grief took his face. "Just... just promise to bring her home... Just promise to bring my daughter home." he said, slightly beginning to choke up, and Hachiko felt a pang of guilt shoot through her. She was worried about nothing but her own country, and she had already forgotten how much these people were in pain too. They were missing their loved ones, their mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, brothers, fathers, sons. These people were already in pain for their loved ones, and Hachiko had been worried about the 'maybes' of her own people. These people, whom have seen war a few times in their life time and already lost so much, still hadn't grown accustom to it. It still hurt, and they don't want to lose another. That's why they were so motivated. That's why they wanted to fight. Not for the sake of war, but so they didn't have to deal with the pain of it. A fire ignited in the young Kunoichi's heart. She had been a fool to think that Ayakashi would go in there blood thirsty. She was a mother to her country, and so she of all people knew loss the most. There is no way she would inflict that upon others more than necessary. This invasion wasn't for the sole purpose of taking Sanosuke like it was for Hachiko. It was for the people whom Sanosuke locked up inside a cell for no real reason, and inflict grief on so many people. With an anger inside her that was built up by that sole blacksmith, Hachiko picked up her bag, and said the words "You have my word." and then she simply vanished from the site.
