Reiko, in the beginning, was both premature, and therefore small, and very sickly. For a while, it was believed that she wouldnt make it past her first week. Even after she managed that, her first month was a doubt, then her first year. Even then, she was very weak and sickly for most of her childhood, and was never really allowed outside or into the town much at all. It wasn't until she was ten that she was considered healthy enough to move around, and that was the age she first stepped outside, even if she was only allowed out onto the clan grounds, and no farther. Of course, at this point, she also hated her life more than anything on the planet. When she turned 15, she was pronounced officially healthy.  

When she had first attempted to go to the academy, at fifteen, her whole family had protested, as well as a good bit of the clan. "You're too weak," they would tell her. "You should just rest," "Let us take care of you," "You might get sick again." At that point, she had been healthy for a year, but they didn't seem to take that as a reason to care. To them, if she'd gotten sick once, who was to say she couldn't, and wouldn't, again? She knew that, one day, she might get sick again, but back then, and now, she was healthy. A medical ninja had even told her that what she had was nothing that could be affected by the life of a shinobi. If it came back, it came back. Nothing to stop or hinder it. Even so, again and again, they'd told her no, to the point that she had gone and enrolled herself. Of course, even before the day she started, the arguments continued endlessly. It wasn't until the day before that her mother gave in. And when she gave in, everybody else had no choice but to follow. Nobody argues with her. It was unspoken knowledge among the clan. And so, Reiko had been reluctantly admitted. Of course, at that point, she was fifteen, while many of the others were much younger than her. So she'd thrown herself into her studies. For two years, she was only home during mealtimes and when she was sleeping. Otherwise, she was practicing or learning at the Academy. Of course, it payed off. She graduated within two years.

Even after she graduated from the Academy, Reiko was older than most of the Genin, and therefore somewhat off to the side when it came to group activities. She was out into Tenzo Uchiha's team, but before she could even officially join, she was struck down with a bout of sickness that led her to bring pulled off of the roster forcibly fit a few months, until it was completely proven that she wasn't relapsing. By the time she was let out, the Chunin Exams were close to starting, and all those who had planned to go had already left. After making a deal with her parents that she would at the very least stay at Mt. Ikkyu for a few days, and relax, she was allowed to go. Her usual inn would be something less extravagant, simmering that was more within Reiko's price range.
