A great many genin had signed up for the chunnin exams in Kirigakure. This tournament was promising to have a good turn out at least. Still an escort would need to be offered to those traveling without prior arrangements. And so it was that instructions had been mailed out in an ash colored envelope. Two days ago messages had been delivered by official delivery men in black robes that only revealed their lower face to each genin that had signed up for the exams within Kirigakure. It would be left with them or their families without a word and the messengers would be gone. Still each messenger that arrived with the letter seemed almost nervous. They kept looking over their shoulder and shivering at some memory or another. They made sure the task given to them was done quickly and exactly as asked. If questioned the messengers would shake their heads and move away at full speeds. Whomever the ash envelopes had come from had put a sense of urgency in these men. Still once opened the envelope would have a map with a dock at the border of Kiri along the northern coast. A time would be marked their along with instructions to bring their own supplies and anything they would need for the exams. It read as follows.
(Mark on map) 9:00 A.M. Monday July 27th
You are hereby invited to join the escort leaving for the exams in the land of Kumogakure. You need only bring supplies for food and water as well as anything you need for the chunnin exams themselves. Only one ship will be present at this dock and you will board it before ten AM as we will be sailing at one minute after the hour. Lodging and such will be provided once we reach Kumo. Do not be late.
-Osada Sero
At nine AM on the day of the mentioned meeting place the dock was empty. A thick blanket of mist hung about hiding the ocean and half the dock from view. For a moment it seemed there was no ship to be had. Perhaps it had been a lie. But those in the group who knew him or knew of Sero knew he didn't play pranks. At the moment the minute hand struck one after nine a creek of old wood could be heard as engine kicked to life in the mist. A light cut through the mist like a blade as it settled on the dock and a black ship, barely big enough to be considered a frigate pulled into port. The edges of it seemed marked or melted along the dock and a burn mark coated the front end. Two men were on board. The captain was an aged man that seemed to chew on his cigar as he eyed the other with caution. The captain himself stood behind the wheel inside the covered helm. Below deck was warm but dripped in several places and their was a considerable amount of dried blood there. Up until a couple of days ago it had been used by pirates. However Sero had better use for it.
Sero himself stood in the crows nest. Anyone who stepped on board would not only see a young man in grey robed with weapons strapped to him but they would also feel him as his unfeeling grey gaze swept over them. He was not even close to human. Something about him felt like a monster was hovering over them and deciding which he would pluck out of existence first. It was as if he controlled the very air they breathed near him and the mist clung to him like a lover. Just being on the same ship as him made the mist seem colder then before. Still he would pay them little mind after examining them at a distance as they boarded. Still he would wait where he was until exactly a minute after ten. He didn't check a watch or anything, just lifted a hand and indicated for them to be off. With that the ship and its inhabitants were on their way to Kumo.
