Jutsu Trained:

After turning in his chair, Kenji faced Juke, who was sitting on the couch reading one of Kenji’s books. “Your clan is pretty mysterious,” he placed the book back on the shelf. His long time training partner Juke had been acting weird all morning; Kenji finally asked him bluntly, “What’s wrong?” He said in an exasperated tone. Juke had on a stern expression, but he soon dropped it and talked freely, “Ever since our first fight, we haven’t fought seriously since. I’ve always thought, there was no real need to, we were both developing and challenging each other enough. But, now that you are a sage, Genjutsu master, and an overall revered figure; I’m starting to think that you have just been taking it easy for my sake… As a proud warrior I can not allow that, and I now challenge you to a full out fight. No holds barred.” Kenji seemed a bit annoyed, but he could see where he was coming from.  Kenji knew, well knows a guy, Bokuden, that never fought him seriously. It infuriated him. As a proud shinobi Kenji wanted to fight Bokuden once more, to fully evaluate how far they both had come since their last encounter so long ago. Kenji had essentially been estranged from many of his rivals and friends, when he went to train in Senjutsu in the Kasfarian Compound. Also, his increased involvement with his clan has also taken him from the village. But soon, real soon, Kenji would step to Bokuden, for a showdown of sorts. Kenji was hopeful that he didn’t have the same “we’re not equal” attitude, if he did, it would be a costly mistake.

“Juke, I consider each other friends, I know you share the same sentiment. Please, let’s not squabble over pettiness. We are so accustomed to one another’s fighting style, there’s nothing we can do to surprise--” “That’s the thing, I feel like you haven’t fought at your full power…” Kenji shook his head, “A fight, with killing intent, is a lose-lose scenario between comrades. I’m afraid I can’t indulge you.”

A package was waiting for Kenji at the Rice Paddy fields, so that’s where he was now heading, Juke decided to come along. A new stock of granola bars had been completed and Kenji had to pick them up and deliver them to the local shop. The granola bars that Kenji always had received quite the reputation, and the local stores were holding them in inventory. It was still morning; the air was brisk and peaceful. The two proceeded gradually through the crowded streets, people running to and fro, trying to buy ingredients and others buying supplies for missions. Kumogakure was thriving beautifully; they were producing some of the finest shinobi the shinobi world had to offer. Some many private companies were hiring shinobi from Kumogakure, and naturally it was increasing the village’s monetary strength considerably.

Kenji had met up with a few Konoha shinobi who were traveling to Kumo because of an escort mission. The Konoha shinobi knew of Kenji and his Genjutsu prowess, and they offered to teach him one of the most valued Genjutsu. Kenji had helped Konoha several times. As a sage the other villages at times made efforts to stay on his good side, Kenji obviously didn’t mind it. They soon after admitted that their real mission was to come and see you and show you a sign of favor from Konoha by teaching you the technique. That was about two weeks ago, Kenji did not train and iron out the creases of the jutsu yet, nor had he used it in a combat situation. It was a fierce technique, and it was sure to be one of his strongest and most useful once he mastered it.

“Alright, we’re here.” The two shinobi were now only 20 meters from the pick up. “There are three boxes, you take two; I’ll take the other. We’re just transporting these boxes back to the village. Let’s get this over with.”Juke walked ahead of Kenji and greeted the man who was watching the granola bars. “Hi, we’re here to deliver these granola bars.” The man looked at a piece of paper, “Kenji and Juke?” They both nodded. Kenji was never known for his physical strength and his one box was a lot heavier than he expected. Juke carried his two boxes with no problem. The terrain of the wilderness was very uneven, and while carrying the boxes they couldn’t quite see where they were walking making stumbles and trips common on their way back.

It was getting closer to noon but the soon was veiled by clouds, keeping the temperature cool and stiff. The two talked on their way back to the village, but all of a sudden Juke stopped in the middle of saying something. Kenji adjusted the box in his arms as they both stopped. Kenji didn’t need to ask, something was obviously wrong and Juke was fully aware of whatever it was. Granola bars were very firm, not fragile; Kenji without hesitation let the box fall to the ground and right before it hit the ground, arrows were flying right for Kenji’s back. Juke saw it coming and tackled Kenji, saving him from the strike. They stared at each other for a second then rushed to their feet, Juke was in his fighting stance and Kenji had his hand on the handle of his katana. “SHOW YOURSELF!” Juke demanded. “There aren’t enough places to hide; he’s using Ninjutsu to conceal himself.” Kenji whispered. Another arrow shot out, Kenji swiped it down easily. Kenji simultaneously launched three shuriken in the direction in which the arrow came from. One of the shuriken grazed the attacker’s leg, revealing his position. He was short and scrawny. Definitely a petty thief, “He knew about the delivery; he planned this high jacking.” Kenji didn’t ask him how he knew about the delivery, it’s not like they were keeping it secret, and it was just some granola bars.

The highly forested area would make it easy for Kenji to perform a substitution. Juke and Kenji were still in an aggressive stance, the archer shot off 5 more arrows. The two evaded the arrows barely. Both Juke and Kenji threw kunai at the would be thief. The kunai cover any direction he could attempt to flee to. The archer was hit, but he recovered quickly and was now running around using the scattered trees as cover. Kenji already knew what he was planning, he noticed he was more a long range threat, and he was going to attack him first from behind the shrubbery. Kenji was already prepared for the incoming arrow, and had a plan to end it right after.

An arrow whizzed towards Kenji’s leg. Kenji had his katana wielded and he could’ve whacked it away, but he let it hit. The arrow would have definitely punctured his skin at a substantial depth. The arrow appeared to dive deep into his skin; a smile was on the archer’s face and worry on Juke’s. Then a puff of white smoke appeared revealing a log. Kenji was now to the left of the attacker, he slowly turned his head to Kenji, the blue haired shinobi had already made the hand seals, and he now had the intruder in his newest Genjutsu, Kenji whispered, “Tree Binding Death.”

The attacker was being held hostage by a tree, a thing branch wrapped around his torso immobilizing him, leaving him at the mercy of Kenji. The jutsu was extremely difficult to execute, he was surprised, he realized that if he wasn’t so close he wouldn’t have been able to successfully hold the enemy. Kenji was now out of the archer’s field of vision. Then, Kenji emerged from above the man’s head with his katana drawn. Kenji brought the katana across his chest, leaving a long laceration. Kenji ended the Genjutsu and he was standing behind the thief, he butted him with the back of the handle knocking him to the ground.

The two shinobi left the intruder there while he rubbed the back of his head. Juke grabbed his bow and snapped it in half along with all of his arrows. “Let’s see you ambush somebody now.” The skirmish tired them a tad, but they had enough energy to resume their delivery. The continued to the village gates, which was just 50 meters out. The two walked up to the guards at the gate, they had a sly grin on their face, “You two run into some trouble?” They ignored them as they were ready to dump these granola bars off. “Can’t tell you how glad I am that you sensed that guy, I would have been defeated if it wasn’t for you.” “Don’t mention it.” Juke said clearly trying to hold back the joy he got from saving Kenji.

They arrived to the shop and dropped the boxes off; the owner thanked them, and told them how much demand they were getting for them. The owner persisted in trying to get Kenji reveal the recipe; Kenji of course could not do such a thing. The two shinobi took a seat on a bench along the busy street. “I’ve never seen anyone react that way to one of your illusions, was that another new Genjutsu.” Kenji took a bite from one of his granola bars, talking with a little grain still in his mouth, “Yes, some shinobi from Konoha taught it to me. Our relations with Konoha have been well lately. The technique is called ‘Tree Binding Death’.” “Yeah, I heard you say that when you caught him.” “It’s an incredibly useful jutsu. I’m still working out the kinks, but the issues are strictly strategic, how to use it, when to use it and so on.”

The two talked and laughed for several minutes enjoying the coolness. “Alright, Kenji, I have to go. I’ll see you later.” “See you, Juke.” Juke walked off blending in with the crowd. Kenji waved and greeted the familiar faces that walked by. Kenji was able to earn a little money in dropping off the granola package and he was able to finally perfect the new Genjutsu he learned. He had yet another powerful and useful technique to add to his arsenal. Kenji looked up and exhaled, he began to think about when the time would come. He would have to leave his friend, Juke and others; leave his clan, his village. But his mind was made, and he felt he was making the right decision. But, the time was not quite right. There was still much Kumogakure had to offer, and much he had to learn. Times like this made it more difficult to imaging going through with it, but it was fleeting sentiment. Kenji finally stood up, and walked off.

Kenji went home to polish his gloves and katana. After he finished the rest of his chores and weapons maintenance he went to a local seafood restaurant for lunch. It was his favorite place and the granola hadn’t really satisfied him and the fight and delivery worked up quite the appetite. He showered and cleaned up before he left. He looked at one of his jackets with his clan’s symbol on it; then left for the restaurant.
