It was cool near the water’s edge. Kenjiro watched the water, schools of fish far enough from the girl that she didn’t feel threatened or disgusted. She sighed, the moonlight glistening off the various surfaces. Dark as she was, she blended perfectly with the un-sunlit rocks and water. The genin sat down, knees under her chin. She had left her shoes behind at the top of the spire. While she liked them fine, she did better climbing the slippery rocks without them. Idly, she thought that perhaps she should find a teacher to teacher how to do that bizarre tree running and water walking jutsu-things she had seen.

Unfolding her legs, she placed a big toe into the water. It felt nice enough. She dipped her feet into the water, splashing around. She leaned onto her knees, focusing on the sounds of the water rippling around the rocks. Ah. Spring was arriving. She closed her eyes, picturing all the pretty flowers and the coming festivities. She would have to start figuring out something to do with her hair. Then, with her hot blood, she’d have to figure out ways to stay cool...

Just then, a beautiful, resonating honk came through the air. Kenjiro opened her eyes in a hurry, taken off guard. She looked around. Another honk came and she quickly registered that it was from above. She grinned as she looked up, a gasp escaping her lips. ”Yeah!” It was that time of year, again, wasn’t it?

It was a flock of trumpeter swans. Kumogakure’s fields supplied the swans with food via agricultural vegetation waste, but the mating pairs liked the abundant small prey around the water. Needless to say, as they lighted on the water, Kenjiro was enraptured.

”Wow!” she exclaimed, forcing herself to choke the yell down into an awed whisper. They weren’t exactly far from her. She looked into the water, looking for particularly large fish. Seeing none, she took off her outer shirt and her skirt. She considered her shiny new hitai-ate; she decided take it from her mane of hair and tie it around her neck for safety. She hopped into the water, startling the swans at first but after a minute they relaxed. Some of them must have recalled her as the weird purple thing that hung out with them.

She chuckled, treading water among the pristine white bodies. Gosh, she loved spring.
