Kaiten

D-rank
The night was already setting in by the time Kai had gotten to the house of the family he was supposed to be watching over. Why was he here? Why had he allowed his subordinate to talk him into this? More importantly, why wasn't he getting paid more for this? He got paid more for stealing money from people than this silly job. Still, he guessed it couldn't hurt, he'd just be able to see a new family and maybe even curry friendship for the clan. The more people who liked them, the less people who disliked them. The less people who disliked them, the less they would have to worry about running into problems ever again. The sooner the day came when they were treated like normal people, the sooner he'd be able to feel like his goals were complete. A small smile crossed over his face as he thought about the future, his future, as a respected ninja.

Knocking on the door of the house, the two adults appeared at the door smiling out at him, before they realized who they were looking at. They didn't know who he was, thank heavens, but they were still able to see something strange about this guy. Standing with an entire arm wrapped in bandages, a silver necklace around his face and in surprisingly smart clothes, they must have thought for a few seconds that he was coming to see if they knew how to heal him. However, before they could ask anything, he cut in with his intention.
"Sir, Ma'am, I'm your babysitter. You asked for one, I responded to your request." Although they initially seemed stunned by this revelation, within moments they broke out in smiles.
"We heard you were coming... um..."
"Kai, ma'm." he said, deciding that it might not be best to mention his full name in case she'd heard of him. She nodded and beckoned for him to come in.

The house was surprisingly neat, pleasant and cosy. The kids were standing up on the stairs, smiling down at him. A pair of girls and a young boy who seemed only just old enough to be able to dress himself. He looked up at them and smiled back, before his thoughts were cut off by their mother talking to him.
"So, there's food on the table in case you get hungry, and you can send them to bed now. Just don't leave them alone until we get back, alright?" He nodded and as they turned, they moved to the door and walked into the night. With them gone, he called up to the kids
"Alright, go get ready for bed. If you want me to read you a story or something, get the book out. I'll be up in five minutes." Of course, he was never quite sure if that was what parents or babysitters were supposed to do for kids, never really having it himself, but that was what he'd heard the other children talking about when they were that age. So, he guessed it would have to do.

Coming upstairs ten minutes later, they were all tucked up in their beds, in their pyjamas, holding a small book up to him. It was cute, surprisingly so. There were few things in this world that Kai actually felt were cute, despite what he claimed, and these kids certainly qualified as one of them. The book was a small, leather bound tome with what looked like a factory with rainbows pouring out of it and into oblivion. It was a strange picture, he felt he'd seen it before, but he ignored his feeling and picked it up. With gusto, he began to read.
"Now a rainbow's tale isn't quite as nice

As the story we knew of sugar and spice

There’s long been rumors as to how, exactly, rainbows are made. There's no denying they exist, and they're one of the most beautiful things in the world. Some people claim that they're made by the collaboration of all the frequencies of light in the visible spectrum, but others claim it's magic. The truth... well, the truth is somewhat darker...."

Four hours later, the parents arrived. By this time, they were all asleep, sleeping soundly, except for Kai. He looked a little shaken by what he'd just read. This... was a children's book? He almost wanted to retch, but forced it back down. As they walked into the house, he didn't even wait to say hello, he walked past them and out into the night. He needed some air, to feel the breeze, and most of all to be away from that house. He wasn't scared, more shaken, but... That, that was surprising

In the rainbow factory, where your dreams and horrors come true, in the rainbow factory, where not a single soul gets through
