Scout Your Surroundings:

This strange place had a bizarre air about it. Watsuji was in less than a pleasant mood in regard to just about everything at the moment. His strange angry ancestor, Hideyoshi trotted several feet back from him in his loud clanking Iyozane armor. The events which lead them to the village they would inevitably discover were strenuous and quite frankly a bit embarrassing. It was all too much to take in, really. While most who had arrived in the strange land had likely begun the process of of deciphering it’s meaning or perhaps they’d arrived already familiar with that knowledge. Watsuji was instead lost in his head not understanding how Hideyoshi had been freed into the physical world and whether or not he would ever return to his container.

The stench of death seemed to pierce the young samurai boy’s nostrils. The people of this village seemed destitute. Pale and cold men, women, and children huddled together in the ruins of a land that appeared to be pillaged almost entirely. A wheeping elderly woman stood alone at the edge of the woods, shouting and screaming into it with all of her might. With further inspection she was shouting names. “Excuse me, venerable lady. What is wrong? Who are you searching for, if I may offer myself in service to relieve your troubles...step away fr....” from within the woods a terrifying skittering sound would rustle through the bushes at great speed and snatch the old woman up, dragging her into the woods and far away. Her screams drowning out as she left earshot.

Watsuji stood gripping his blade, staring into the looming woods as the sun clipped over the tree line and began to fade. The young boy was mortified. This was not like watching criminals die, or even being beaten senseless by oppressive police forces. Innocent life was snatched away by some sort of spider-like horror. His anger, like a pot of water on high heat, finally reached a boil. He screamed out in anger as tears streamed down his eyes “COWARD! YOU ARE NOTHING BUT AN INSECT TO BE SMASHED UNDER MY SANDLES, WRETCHED CREATURE!” with that he darted into the dark woods after the woman, Hideyoshi protesting quietly but following Watsuji nonetheless, as the spirit knew if the boy fell, so would he.

Through brush, brambles and the dark veil of the woods, Watsuji stormed forward in anger. Misplaced as it was, the whirlwind of emotions that drove him forward were for a good cause. Anyone with an introspective view of the small boy would have known the woman being snatched away into the woods was only the tipping point for an irrational response. “Boy, you will get yourself killed rushing into unfamiliar territory like this. Control your emotions!” Hideyoshi called out in his gravely voice as he chased at a moderate pace behind his descendant. It would take only a few moments of this thoughtless crusade through the woods before Watsuji looked around and realized that he was entirely lost. Not even Hideyoshi was in sight at this point.

The same chittering clicks which came from the large spider creature when it took the old woman began just slightly behind Watsuji as the creature stuck its head over his left shoulder and grinned.

Since finding the village, or more appropriately, the ruins which were set steadfast in the thick, eerie forest, Kirei had wandered the surrounding woods searching for any of the people he hoped to find. Di was somewhere here, Kirei knew his partner would not miss the chance to investigate Sero Osada's boastful netherworld, through which the pair hoped to discover the extent of his involvement, if any, with the Yatagarasu murders. Of course, this meant the Uchiha was on the lookout for the Seven Swords' captain himself, as well, after having been on the prowl for a whole night since arriving, Kirei had witnessed more than enough strangeness to know things here were going to be tough. The boy had no way of knowing how much time had passed in the outside world since arriving, but suspected the flow of temporal movement may be somewhat non-linear when concerning the relationship between the two. He wondered then, whether Watsuji had woken up to his note and found his way to the portal, whether the boy was looking for him now as the Uchiha searched for his Ronin companion. This was the third individual who Kirei sought to commune with, Watsuji, the young Samurai who he had met in the Water Country only a week prior but who had become a close friend. The Uchiha hoped to see him soon.

Reminiscent, perhaps cyclical, was Kirei's traversal of the forest, leaping from branch to floor and then up to the canopy, twisting his body and eyes in every direction with his Sharingan searching the surroundings for any sign of life. How many times had he been here? The Uchiha lost count of the midnight patrols and wild beast hunts, the vigilante nights with Di lost long ago beneath a current of shinobi life. The boy was growing up before the eyes of the Mist, nearing his journey home where he would begin the passage of a proud Leaf ninja. Kirei let out a sigh as he came to a standstill, the central pillar wrapped in black cloth, staring out with his mask into the fog, surrounded by a circle of ivory birch trees. The boy's ears twitched, catching the sound of something snapping in the distance, immediately he turned to find nothing moving in the mist. Eyes narrowing, the boy took a last glance all around and then proceded on his run. After several minutes, the boy could spy shapes of chakra approaching in the distance, he penetrated the treeline as a small encampment came into view. Torn tents and weary villagers, lost and crying with pallid faces and sunken eyes. Kirei grimaced and peered onward still, looking for a sign of any threat that lurked around them. With nothing to be seen, Kirei knelt at the face of a middle-aged man, whose stringy white hair clung to his face with rain and mud.

"Can you speak? Can you tell me what happened here?"

"They came from the forest..."

The man's voice was soft and dry, fading by the word. Kirei bent forward to hear him more clearly as he continued, labored breaths intercepting each word.

"...The s-samurai. He saved us."

With a heave from his lungs, the man gave up on speaking, resigned to his fate laying here in this desolate woods. Kirei stood and whipped his body around, moving around the clearing with his eyes working overtime to track any sign of the samurai who the villager spoke of. The Uchiha's mind raced, hopeful that he may have found one of his marks in this strange alternate dimension. The only signs he could detect were tracks leading north from the site, but the footprints were much too large and had disturbed far too much of the forest for them to belong to his friend. Kirei doubled down, sprinting through the trees in pursuit of some invisible target who the man had referred to as 'samurai'. The Uchiha only knew of one samurai and if there were another about, was it possible that more of Watsuji's clansmen had wandered into the city? Kirei wondered whether his friend was perhaps a runaway and whether his people might seek him, such circumstances might explain this. As he ran, he searched frantically for chakra until finally, the shape of a man appeared at the edge of his vision, armored and much too tall, as he had suspected, to be Watsuji. Kirei approached gingerly, descending into the gaps between the trees and clearing his throat to catch the attention of his armored target. Turning, the samurai laid eyes on the masked Uchiha and grinned.

"Kirei."

The words hit the blonde like a towering avalanche had swept him away, Kirei recognized the grim, hoarse cadence without delay. From time to time, Kirei had shared precious moments with Watsuji's ancestor, heard his berating tone and been at the receiving end of both his verbal lashings and signs of trust. Kirei still wasn't sure what to make of the specter sealed within his companion's blade but had given no thought to the possibility of ever really meeting him. In the distance, the skittering horde of creatures would be enclosed on the position of these warriors as well, several more of the monsters darting back and forth in the peripherals of Kirei's Sharingan.

"H-Hideyoshi? What the hell? How is? Where is Watsuji!?"

The tall and heavily armored undead samurai turned his head slowly toward the approaching blonde shinobi. The clearing was anything silent, and all around the two echoes and rustling were rampant. Uncomfortable insect-like clicking and chittering grew louder and louder. Hideyoshi took hold of the handle of his Odachi as he looked over to Uchiha, Kirei. Without any solid idea of his own mortality or the extent of his strength in this strange place, he would need to borrow the young shinobi’s capabilities once more. He spoke with the air and power of the leader and commander he had been in life These creatures are not the weak rabble you’ve dealt with before, Uchiha boy. Guard my back, I will guard yours. We must finish up before the sun leaves the sky. Lest we never find Watsuji alive again.” with that, he would brace for impact. The skittering and chittering stopped all at once. For a few moments the only sound that could be heard was the low whimpers and cries of the wounded and desolate villagers who sat against trees and upon logs. The small makeshift camp fire which had previously crackled went out leaving the line of sight heavily restricted intensely because of the setting sun.

A few of the villagers exclaimed while a more elderly man began to speak of the end. He droned on as the creatures all closed in, an attack that seemed orchestrated even. Hideyoshi couldn’t get a good idea of what they looked like initially, screaming men and being completely eviscerated amd pullednoff into the dark shade of the woods. The first one to approach Hideyoshi would meet it’s end before it knew what it had gotten itself into. Hideyoshi drew his blade and made three powerful slashes, completely moving through the beast like a hot knife through butter. They had the bodies of spiders with humanoid torsos sticking upright from the abdomen. It made no difference to the ancient warrior. The shinobi at his back received plenty of attacks directed his way as well, the swarm seeming to assume him the weaker of the two due to his size. Knowing him to be shorter the samurai would hesitate none to swing his sword backwards above the young blondes head to sever the head of an incoming attacker before resuming his own onslaught. His blade caught itself in the side of on of the creature’s skulls and lodged within it this time, leaving him defenseless to another attack from a second beast.

The now angered samurai warrior grabbed the creatures piercing appendage and snapped it backwards with his bare hand, shoving it back into the beast itself. When he looked around he realized the swarm had grown. It was becoming innumerable. It was becoming tedious to take each creature down with such a personal touch. He now opted to use a different method. Looking back at Kirei, he instructed as a measure of good faith “Please, lower yourself to the ground, boy. Trust in me. He grabbed his blade tenderly, placing each finger upon it one by one in an almost intricate fashion. Time seemed to stand still for him while he did this, likely not so much for the boy who had taken up a defenseless position on the ground. The beasts assumed a surrender and came in close. Finally, Hideyoshi unleaded the full extent of his might, testing the extent of his power in this realm. He unsheathed his blade and struck, as was natural with Iai. This stroke, empowered by lightning created a powerful explosive concussion as it passed, cleaving through nearly half a mile of trees in one swipe of 360 degrees, and annihilating every foul creature in sight.

We must find the boy, now!

Watsuji of the Miyamoto was around a mile away, being dragged across the ground, his leg punctured by a sharp spider leg. He was being dragged to the hive. A large cave filled with these foul creatures and littered with intense webbing. Horrors yet unknown to the three men lie within.

Following the shadows with his Sharingan, it was apparent to Kirei that his visual prowess gave him a much easier time tracking these monsters, analyzing them and watching their chakra, than even Hideyoshi could manage. The blonde supposed this was the gift of his clan, the second edge of their Curse of Hatred which caused them to slaughter one another throughout the ages for power but granted his clansmen such incredible might. With their chitinous legs, towering frames and chimeric features, Kirei was able to discern these monstrous creatures' detail long before they came into view. The boy tapped his wrist, checking the mechanisms of his weapon, one he had crafted himself after instruction by his mentor Izumi Karisuma, a replica of the hidden blade she herself carried. When Hideyoshi spoke, Kirei returned his orders with a swift nod and decided he would not wait for the samurai, but forge his path through the battle as was most natural; surrendering himself to the power of the Sharingan.

Darting toward the assailants before they had a chance to close in, Kirei ducked and lowered his body into a roll which carried him through the gap between two monsters. Between his fingers, already grasped by this point in both hands, where a myriad of ninja tools strung with wire which would fly out in a widespread volley, nearly twenty in total would careen through the air for his monstrous foes. Kirei let out a grunt as the implements aimed at the legs of his quarries bounced off the natural armor and went flying in different directions. The central part of the boy's plan was, ironically, the web of cable he had spun to keep the duo of monsters in place. The boy smiled wide as he would pull the nexus of strings together and ensnare the limbs of his assailants in tight loops, causing them to flail. Taking his opportunity, Kirei rushed for the side of a nearby tree, performing a hand seal and causing the earth to split and crack, toppling the tree's roots and causing it to lean precariously before finally giving way with a deafening series of cracks and heaves. With twin howling and gravely splutters, the skeletal structures of the bound beasts gave way, and they were crushed handily beneath the Uchiha's attack. The boy had no time to relax and take in his handiwork, rushing in an arc around the first clearing to get a look for Hideyoshi and make sure he could control the flow of the battle.

Shouting from across the way, the samurai made it clear he intended to devastate the skittering horde which closed in from all directions. Kirei watched the man as his chakra began to gather, effortlessly able to track Hideyoshi's technique while still, he formed the necessary energy. This would allow Kirei to time his dodge at the perfect moment, squeezing out any extra time he could to assist. The boy would spin his body as he darted between the trees, weaving in and out of the sightlines of his prey throwing kunai and shuriken, creating lines through which he could herd the growing horde and position them in the way of Hideyoshi's attack. When finally the moment, arrived, Kirei jumped high and arched his body, spiritual walking practice allowing him to gain purchase on the underside of a branch. The boy had not expected the sheer scale of Hideyoshi's destructive swathe, which lurched out in all directions into the encompassing creatures, slicing into even the trees and causing Kirei's perch to wobble and lean with harm. In the wake of the Samurai's attack, Kirei dropped down from above and responded again non-verbally, nodding to Hideyoshi and darting into the forest.

Kirei's face was a mixture of desperation and anger, both at himself for not waiting until Watsuji had recovered and accompanying him, or perhaps for giving him the note at all, and at the Samurai who he assumed was supposed to keep watch of his young charge. As he ran, Kirei would shout back to Hideyoshi, barking in a sharp cadence.

"How the hell are you here anyway? What's going on?"

Sharingan locked on the only straight shot trail through the forest, Kirei bet on the tracks of a single group of spider beings which came to the mouth of a cave nestled between a triumvirate of rocks at the base of a stony hillside. The Uchiha gestured over his shoulder and vanished into the darkness, not worrying about lighting the way as his dojutsu, which burned red in the pitch black, pierced the black veil while he ran. When the network of caves began to split, the boy let out an audible string of curses and brought together his fingers, splitting up a number of shadow clones to search throughout the passages and not waste time. Whether Hideyoshi had managed to keep up or not was of little concern to Kirei as the boy's vision opened up into a dimly lit antechamber with two large creatures at the opposite end of the room before a carved archway. Kirei let out a growl as he laid eyes on the unconscious form of Watsuji being dragged across the colossal chamber beyond this room toward some alter stained with dried blood and piled with bones.

"WATSUJI!"

The Uchiha's cry echoed out with vehemence as he charged the door's guards, withdrawing the shape of kunai within his fists and igniting the roaring inferno of the Devouring Blaze, a technique which the Uchiha had seen replicated across the Mist many times already, and one of which he was proud to be the originator. A merciless fire roared to life, pillars incinerating the dried flesh of the two guards as Kirei spilled into the room, commanding his fire to wash over the opponents who dared to come close. Hideyoshi would have his own problems, even the power of Kirei's jutsu was not enough to cover the entire area, which was filled to the brim with chittering monstrosities.

The Uchiha boy and his piercingly red eyes were a formidable unit in the field of battle. It would seem Kirei of the Uchiha clan was on the fast and furious track to becoming a combatant in this world to be feared by all but the strongest of men. and even then... Hideyoshi watched him at any opportunity he could during the onslaught, the acrobatics and maneuvering abilities of that young man were something Watsuji could have picked up and utilized as well, seeing as they were both slightly small-framed. The woods were quiet now, but the chase went on. Up ahead, Watsuji would disappear from line of sight into the massive cave-like structure. Perhaps the proper words for it would have been burrow, den, or even nest. Nonetheless, Hideyoshi suspected his ancestor would meet a most unnecessary and cruel fate within a few minutes of being taken inside. Kirei was confused, and understandably so. It seemed nobody who entered this realm truly knew what they were entering into, which brought Hideyoshi to wonder of its relevance and importance. The creator of such a portal was clearly incompetent or overconfident.

This land we have been brought into, it is not part of the physical world. Spiritual entities such as myself are no longer sealed within their tombs here. Likewise, I wouldn’t be surprised if the dead were freed from their graves.

He would take a pause as they continued dashing through the woods quickly toward the eerie looking mound. Strange dripping sounds could be heard from within, along with grotesque squelching as they both approached it’s darkness. Hideyoshi followed with spiritual sensory, keeping up but not as efficiently as the sheer power of those sharingan. The young Uchiha shouted out the descendants name and launched forth a volley of flames as he chased into the cave without faltering. The strange beasts had absolutely no chance when united by the cleansing flames. Hideyoshi took leisure here, rushing into battle alongside the boy and sharpening his rusty blade work, dodging, and overall remembering what it was like to have a body. It was a strange thing to forget, but as was coming back to life in the first place. He slammed his hilt into one of the creatures’ skulls, crushing it outright. He then dashed a clean slicing path through the center of the horde to intercept the one who had captured Watsuji, standing before him with his blade drawn.

Boy, are you still conscious?

Nothing would come back to him in response, Hideyoshi bisected the crawling beast quickly. Just as he paced his blade into it’s sheathe, he felt something pierce through his decaying torso and lift him into the air. He made no sound as a monumental, horrific iteration of the apparent grunts below him roared into his face. It’s head larger than Hideyoshi’s entire body. The pain was undeniable. He sputtered up blood and stared into the eyes of the fiend.

It is all so wonderful to feel this sensation again. Even in this withered body, you have brought me the most wonderful thing of all, beast. You have reassured me that this is not a waking dream.

The hardly living corpse of a samurai cackled audibly as blood and gore dripped from the hole bore through him by a spiny spiders leg as large as a steel pylon or piece of reinforcing bar. The laughing and cackling raged on, as the creature flicked him to the side with little to no effort, a large crash into the wall and rubble collapsing onto, burying the corpse, ironically. The large spider creature would waste no time swinging his appendage at ludicrous speed straight toward the small blue haired boy laying on the ground, Kirei being the only thing that could have stopped the assault and saved the boy at that time.

A realm between life and death; some spectral division caused by Sero's portal had manifested the Samurai here. This alarmed Kirei; the thought of what else may have been freed by this magic, or what foul things lurked still for them to discover in the depths of this wretched spawning pit. Furthermore, the Uchiha was forced to consider the shinobi who had led them all here, Sero Osada possessed powerful techniques, this much was known across the world, but the magic to wrench open the walls of reality and lead others into a purgatory of his own making was a terrible feat. Kirei's feet pounded the forest floor and throughout the caves and dugout, thoughts racing and eyes probing every corner for his friend. The moment it changed was clear; seeing Watsuji's motionless form in the midst of this hell set the Uchiha's mind ablaze with ancestral rage; the boy refused to allow any harm to befall his friend.

The Uchiha was as if unleashed from hell itself, a burning swathe from which only judgment poured throughout the chamber. Surrounded by monsters, Kirei let out a cry, and his blaze tore between them, weaving between their legs and expanding into chaotic plumes to envelop and incinerate the spiders and their nests. Clinging to the walls with the film of webs and mucus were the egg sacks which Kirei sent his fire toward while he ran, determined to exterminate this hive, Sharingan driving his body to unravel the unlife which plagued this island. Raising his arms, the boy would conjure a myriad of fireballs, splitting them with his will until the hundreds of projectiles were sufficient to rain down as Kirei set about his grisly work. Without holding back, Kirei's chakra seared the air, his perfected technique engulfing each monster who dared step within the radius of the Blaze which performed as its namesake, Devouring Cruelty.

When Kirei heard Hideyoshi cry out, the boy whipped his gaze around and caught the end of his exchange. The samurai had been caught off guard, impaled and lifted high above the body of his descendant, curiously, he laughed and cackled even as the mother of the hive tossed his broken body to the wayside, carelessly burying him anew. The Uchiha's eyes were not focused on the samurai's fate, to Kirei the only thing which mattered was the immediate state of his friend, who lay beneath the hulking being, helplessly awaiting death by its careening appendage. Kirei screamed, filling the nest with his voice and erupting beneath the creature enough flames to send it reeling backward, the fire shielding Watsuji without burning him as Kirei willed it to withhold its effects from harming his companion. Still letting out a shrill cry, Kirei shifted his arms into the form of a hand seal, cracking the earth and lifting from it hunks of boulder which he would hurl through the air, pelting the creature with massive rocks while lashing at its flesh with searing flame. From afar, Kirei may have looked like a red-eyed demon, bathed in blood and fire which tore mercilessly into the monsters and left nothing in its wake but husks and ashes.

When Kirei turned, chest heaving, brow fettered with sweat and ash, to look at Watsuji and run to his side. Kirei would shake the boy's shoulders, calling out his name and whether he stirred or not, Kirei would take the boy in his arms and begin his evacuation. Smoldering nests within the walls of the burrow dripped and began to buckle, causing a loud rumble as the Uchiha took off toward the exit with Watsuji secured, not making a glance for the incarnated spirit which the Uchiha still trusted to make his own way. Bursting into the forest, Kirei's fire would impose itself on the trees here, the aura igniting the trunks and dried branches, warming the clearing surrounding the nest's entrance as the Uchiha would set Watsuji down, either laying if he were still unconscious, or helping him however he decided if he were awake. Whichever happened, Kirei would follow by catching his breath and waiting by his friend's side to see if Hideyoshi would emerge, or until they decided to make their way toward help.

The pain of heavy rubble crushing the corpse-like figure while his wound stopped bleeding and began to reform was quite intense. With every bit of him that healed, however, he become more detached from who he was in life. Slowly, his ability to think complex thoughts and feelings would wear away, eroding like rocks on the shore of an eternal river. He lay beneath them with a grin on his face, remembering the times in life that he played in the fields of daisies with his young daughter. The girl, with beautiful blonde hair and the blue jewels that shimmered up at him as they rushed around with nothing but happiness and joy. Her laughter was like something to keep him tethered to his humanity. He saw his wife standing at the door of his small abode, beckoning the two in for a meal cooked with love. He tasted the warm tea and the delicious broth of noodles and the soft give of dumplings in his mouth. Miyamoto, Hideyoshi had always wanted to be a farmer. A simple farmer with a family and a simple life.

The cave tumbled and heaved as it broke down, the result of actions and valiant efforts of Uchiha, Kirei rescuing his young samurai friend.  They made it out. The callous and hardened samurai lay in the rubble for some time, pondering whether he could finally die permanently if he just remained still. The painful memories and the life which had been stolen from him played through his mind and he could not stop them. Heavier rocks fell and the man felt things inside of him snap and crack. Nothing stopped the film from rolling, however. He wished it could have ended right there. The two boys made it out without a care in the world about the angry spirit. He could not blame them, really.

Lightning flickered outside of the small farmhouse. A pair of eyes reflected the strike in the corner, borne of darkness. Hideyoshi felt the rain start up as he rushed to the barn to secure it and settle the animals. His wife and daughter were in bed, his daughter tucked in safely and sleeping peacefully. From within the dark barn the man hushed his horses and calmed them, lightning struck again this time extremely loud and far too close for comfort. A high pitched scream echoed from the small house, piercing everything in the untrained man’s heart and soul.

No!” the agonized man roared from within the collapsing caves, bursting forth enough energy and chakra to clear himself of all debris and create a clear area around himself. He remained there’s on his knees, begging for death and release, begging for an end to this. By the end of his lifetime, Hideyoshi had hoped for a nihilistic afterlife. Darkness and no thoughts. That was the only sanctuary he could find. The sobbing and pained exclamation would be muffled by the still crumbling cave. He looked down at his blade, tears dripping onto it as it reflected back at him, reminding him of his trespasses against the Miyamoto traditions. Neither his wife nor his daughter could speak to him through the blades he had forced his people to create, as he had so desperately hoped they could.

There was not a single person in this world who cared what happened to Miyamoto, Hideyoshi. And he had earned that over the years.

The two boys would see Hideyoshi finally, emerging from rubble carefully and walking at his own pace. He would remain quiet, which was not uncommon for the old corpse. The extend of Watsuji’s injuries and fatigue was enough to be concerned about. The young man could barely keep consciousness as the trio searched for the dilapidated village from before, seeking anyone who could heal him and protect him from further damage as night fell upon them.

Kirei knelt over the boy's body as he remained unresponsive, drifting in and out of consciousness. The Uchiha held his eyes shut and tried to steady his breathing, fighting back the urge to cry out and curse the forest. Errant tears escaped the boy's eyes as he looked down, taking the soft folds of his cloak and wiping away the blood and dirt from the samurai's apparent wounds before using his Sharingan to examine him properly. For the second time, Kirei was putting the medical knowledge passed onto him by Izumi into practice tending to the boy's wounds while he glanced back toward the entrance of the burning hive every so often to search for Hideyoshi. The boy's thoughts raced frantically, unable to focus beyond the moment as he longed to go back and arrive sooner, rescue Watsuji from another fate nearing death. Kirei felt responsible for the boy being here and decided that once the two of them were free of this dimension, it would be time to posit the idea of traveling back to Konoha, where the Uchiha longed to return to.

When finally Kirei caught the faint glimmer of chakra emerging from the cave, he let out a sigh of relief, thankful that the samurai spirit had made it out before the total collapse. Kirei pondered briefly how susceptible the unleased manifestation was to death, but given that the Uchiha noticed no waning chakra flow or lingering wounds, he suspected not very. The boy pulled at his mask, finally removing it and feeling the fresh air touch his face while he smiled through his tears happy to see Hideyoshi in good health.

"Thank God. I knew you could make it. Watsuji's not in good shape, we have to find the village quickly so I can suture his wounds. Help me carry him."

With Watsuji slung across his shoulder, Kirei would begin the weary trek back toward the dilapidated village which lay not far from here. Through the mist, Kirei could hear the cries of monsters in the distance as they hunted other prey, or returned to find their nest in ruins. Kirei's mind turned to thoughts of long hikes through Fire Country wilderness, his father trudging along behind him as he pushed the young Uchiha to the brink of his endurance. The rolling fog and dead trees made Kirei feel oppressed beneath the weight of battle and water, he was sick of this country, mind locked on dreams of a brighter future to forge for his nation. As the trees vanished behind them, the village came into view, and Kirei barged his way into the walls of one of the many abandoned buildings which lay strewn through the ruined settlement. During this small journey, Kirei would present some of his thoughts aloud, whether Hideyoshi replied or not, and if he did he would insert the follow-up questions wherever felt most natural.

"Your clansmen strong, Hideyoshi. I've learned a lot already from fighting alongside you and Watsuji, your samurai creed, the finesse with which you wield your weapons and the conviction with which you uphold your beliefs. I respect the power of your people, and my friend is lucky to have an ancestor such as you to watch over him. Thank you for all you do."

The boy's fire would ignite a floating orb in the room's center, allowing it to heat up, while the boy's Geomancy would enable him to quickly patch up drafty holes in the house's walls. For however long it took, Kirei would sit there at the side of his companion, tending to his wounds as needed, making sure the boy was neither too hot or cold and briefly leaving only once to gather water for them to drink. The boy had felt responsible for so much death since beginning his training here, some of it rolled off the back of his shoulders, like those who were swept away in the heat of battle, but the innocents who had lost property or their lives at the hands of his negligence or incompetence weighed heavily upon the Uchiha. Kirei supposed this was the way of things, that he would feel this way forever, or at least until he grew numb to the sensation. With his Sharingan detecting Watsuji's vital signs and watching his chakra flow, Kirei sat still with dark rings beneath his tired, bloodshot eyes, observing and remaining vigilant at the dangers which lurked all around.

Watsuji would have been present in only flashes over the last hour or two. All of those events seemed to have happened with such unrelenting speed. It was true what they said about being busy. It truly did cause time to fly, the young boy having been through absolute hell since arriving and dumping himself directly into the world of shinobi. Only one person was on the blue haired boy’s mind as he lay limp, too exhausted to even open his eyes, let alone speak. Kirei. Uchiha Kirei had left Watsuji a note, and by following the instructions within and going to where the shinobi had described, he wasn’t even sure if he was still living. His sensations were all numb, and that would be best for him at this time, the jostling back and forth of being carried would have been incredibly painful any other way.

There was a gaping, bleeding hole in his leg, his body was still littered in bruising and now his chest seemed to be heaving intensely. Thoughts of home warmed Watsuji as Kirei carried him vigorously and with haste away from the cavern and as quickly out of the woods as he could.  Nothing had been okay since he arrived here. Nothing had been alright at all. He would reflect on the warnings and pleading of his friends and family. They had asked him not to journey into the world of the shinobi. All manner of unspeakable taboos and evils lurked within their traditions. The samurai and shinobi were really not that different, but the way they framed one another created the illusion of great disparity. It was honestly unfathomable just how much good could have come of total cooperation between the two brands of warrior. Such a bond rarely existed, and this made the relationship between Uchiha, Kirei and Miyamoto, Watsuji even more interesting. At the moment, the young samurai had no idea just how much he owed Kirei.

Hideyoshi was quiet as he took the boy in his arms and assisted in the carrying. He was hardly in the mood to speak, displeased with his own thoughts and feelings. Uncomfortable in his own skin. Kirei called it good fortune that Watsuji had been bound to the powerful samurai. Hideyoshi thought of it more like a curse. He gave a quiet nod in response to a need to find the village, pointing over in the distance at the sight which Watsuji had formerly cut down a tree and revealed the entrance to the village when they first arrived. It was a tell-tale mark of the vigor and destruction left behind by the lively boy.

It is a good thing the boy isn’t subtle at all in his actions. That fallen tree marks our destination. Now we must hope someone here can help him in this strange place.

The Uchiha boy spoke volumes of the power of samurai, a flattery Hideyoshi could not find words for. Still struggling with mental torment, he had little to say and gave Kirei a humble nod instead. He attempted to remain focused on the task at hand. It was troublesome to find oneself in this sort of predicament. He held in his hands both his own life and the life of someone he had bickered with and hated for a lifetime. Hideyoshi had never expected to find himself in contact with the boy. Sealed away in a blade after his death, disrespected as he fell behind society and its traditions. The old man was dealing with quite a bit.  His predicament was unique. On one hand, he could not help feeling connected to the boy. It was after all his blood which flowed through the child's veins. But to have disrespected his honor in such a way, the village must have lost their way. To seal Miyamoto, Hideyoshi into such an infantile blade was intentional heresy. Of course he wanted to exist again, to see out vengeance and show this husk of a boy what being a warrior meant. But surely doing so would result in youth lost.

The two would hurry into the village and set up a fire away from any of the flammable fallen structures to avoid causing bigger issues for the sullen people all around them. The whole place felt cold, and it was imperative that the damaged boy at the least be warmed. They nestled into a broken down structure made mostly of concrete. The moody undead samurai would put in a word for the sake of his descendant. “He needs medical attention. I do not see him surviving the night this way. I also think having him die in this hellish place might be the worst way to go. We should ask around.

Watsuji felt the warmth a fire gently prodding at him as he lay in a sort broken up structure within the village. Incredible pain overwhelmed his consciousness but he remained, leaning up to stare at his mangled leg. It had begun to swell, but it had also taken on an uncomfortable pallor. Blood loss was taking hold. Those creatures would have been anything but sanitary, which might explain away any curiosity as to whether the wound was at risk of infection. He was alone, which made him wonder where his pissy ancestor and Kirei had wandered off to. It may have been likely they were searching for medical attention. That was the best Watsuji could have hoped for as he laid himself back down and looked up into the endless night sky, and then he faded back to black.

In the black came dreams. Dreams of war, dreams of his people suffering. The samurai disgraced under the fist of tyranny. The Land of Iron calling to him, beckoning Watsuji in. Fate had more planned for the short-tempered samurai. This was not going to be his day to die.
