Rysano

Rysano

D-rank
Mission:

Rysano Itawaka took a deep breath as he exited his house in the Hidden Mist Village. The crisp air bit at the inside of his chest. The sun was just starting to dip below the horizon, and he was off to begin his next mission. The weather had been uncharacteristically dry recently, being almost a full week now since the last real rainfall they had had in the village, but the moisture in the air was still as present as ever. It was never absent here, regardless of rainfall. It hung on the air like a blanket, and it only amplified the chill. The city was beginning to slow down as residents were heading for the night. You could still smell the fresh food being served to those only just now getting off of work and settling down for a meal.

He decided he’d better get a move on. He wouldn’t want to be the last one there. He’d like to make a good impression on his fellow shinobi if he could. He hadn’t been a genin very long, and in that time he’d only taken on a couple D-rank missions by himself. He realized he didn’t even really know any of the other ninja in the village! Of course, he knew some people from his graduating academy class, but he hadn’t seen any of them in a long time. He had no idea what they were doing or if there were even still in the village. He really needed to take some time to meet some of the other ninja here. He knew it wouldn’t be hard to make friends with any of them. He had always had a natural gift when it came to befriending others. He had an infectious smile and truly cared for the well-being of others. Others seemed to be able to sense his genuine care and it naturally put him on their good side. He just needed to put himself in a situation where he could meet a lot of people, and he was sure he would walk away with at least a few new, close friends.

But there was time for that later. Right now Rysano needed to focus on the task at hand, and that was to keep watch of the northern entrance of Kirigakure. As he walked that direction through the center of town, he began to wonder what his partners for this mission would be like. Would the handlers pair him up with others who complimented his skill set with theirs? Or did they simply through a team together based on whoever they had on hand at the moment? He hoped at the very least they would be able to handle themselves in a fight. The area around the village seemed quiet enough and he knew of no ongoing conflicts that could possibly lead to any action during his watch, but even so, it would prove better to be safe than sorry. He knew his own abilities, and he also knew he isn't much use in a battle. He would be able to take care of allies if they were to get injured, but he was all too aware of his limitations, and just hoped his, albeit temporary, teammates would be able to pick up his slack.

As he neared the gates, he spotted an elderly woman returning home for the evening. He recognized her as an old family friend and called out as he began to jog toward her. He could see she was carrying a few large bags of groceries and wanted to offer to help her with them. She turned her head toward his shout and couldn’t help but smile as she saw who it was. She asked him what he was doing in this part of the town this late, and he explained to her his situation, asking if she would like any help with her bags. “These old bones aren’t all out of strength just yet, young Itawaka.” She would snap at him playfully as she unlocked her door, “Now you had better get a move on if you’re going to make it to the gates before nightfall.” Rysano realized in all his daydreaming about the other ninja of the village, his pace hadn’t quite kept up with what he would like, and now only the last fading slivers of the sun’s rays were visible as the moon-less dark crept into the sky. He thanked the old woman for reminding him and took off in the direction of the gates, shouting a goodbye as he ran.

Arriving just as the previous shift of guards were beginning to walk back to town, he stopped in front of who he believed to be in charge. “Genin Rysano Itawaka, reporting for guard duty sir!” He’d try to catch his breath as he stood in front of the uniformed man. “Ready for my mission!” The balding man looked at him with disinterested eyes, sizing the teenager up in a second. “Great kid. Sure is wild out there tonight. Keep your eyes peeled.” His subordinates burst into laughter at Rysano’s expense as they all turned to return to their homes for the night. He knew he might be a little too eager for a mission that seemed so rudimentary to people like them, but this was Rysano’s first opportunity to meet other ninja and he was excited to spend the night speaking with them and learning about their experiences. He wondered if maybe he’d be paired with a higher-ranked ninja. ‘That sure would be a treat.’ He thought to himself as he turned to stare out through the gates, down the path and to the forests just beyond. The night had fully crept in around him now, and with only a couple torches for light, he stood and wondered about just who would be joining him tonight.

Izumi

Izumi

Izumi was not normally one to question orders for missions but this time… it seemed a bit excessive. As a newly minted Special Jounin, and deemed a specialist in infiltration and espionage, shouldn’t she be doing something more grand than … guard duty? Izumi was sure the papers weren’t just mixed up too, she read the actual orders herself when she was given the news. Assuming it was some sort of mixup, Izumi went down to the Mizukage’s office herself to make sure it wasn’t some sort of paperwork mixup. But no, Izumi and Nova we’re tasked with watching the Kirigakure walls, normally an illustrious task reserved for a couple of genin or a single chunin. It was nice change of pace as of late truth be told, Izumi and Nova has recently been asked to do some violent and involved missions. Izumi didn’t mind these difficult missions either but was still happy to have a nice relaxing night doing pretty much nothing. Besides, it was usually fun to get to know the younger generation. Izumi has grown into a cold hearted and ruthless woman in her adult age. However, she never lost her soft spot for kids and those in need. Izumi also has a very soft spot for the young woman who was to be her other companion, Nova Makato. Izumi and Nova were intimately close, and this was one of Izumi’s first missions as a Special Jounin.

Izumi was sure to dress for the occasion, wearing her flak jacket over her usual tight fitting clothing. She’s been glad for it on a couple of occasions, the armor having saved her from pain she’s all too familiar with such as a kunai digging into her stomach or a shuriken in her shoulder. It was a useful piece of clothing and Izumi was not one to deny utility. The young Karisuma had many good qualities, one of the few bad ones alongside her nasty temper was her common tardiness. The young lady was a fan of what you'd call fashionable lateness, the correct application of the concept escaped her though. The woman was likely to be late for every occasion simply because that's how she was. This mission was no exception, the young genin no doubt would arrive long before Izumi and wonder where she'd been. Izumi decided to eat before her shift on guard duty. Lightly shirking the task in favor of more important matters such as the weather or literally anything other than being a wall guard. She would show up no doubt, but being on time was not her first priority. She took her time even choosing underwear … after all Nova would be there and would surely come back to Izumi's house after the mission. Izumi almost enjoyed being late it was a strange feeling she couldn't quite explain. Regardless, once she was dressed and ready she set off at a leisurely pace towards the northern wall, where she was to report for the night.

Izumi smoked on her way over, a habit she'd picked up to help with her short temper. The only giveaway was the red eyes, but she never let herself be seen doing it. It was not uncommon for eyes to be red when she was practicing with her dojutsu anyways. Izumi looked up to admire the stars as she walked, taking in the cosmic beauty. The red head hoped that when she used her dojutsu her eyes sparkled like the stars. There was something alluring about the otherwordly nature of the night sky. It was sometimes hard to believe it was real when you looked into the night sky what with the stars, the moon, and the other random cosmic effects one might see when light on the surface was removed from the equation. Izumi loved it, and had long made a habit of taking walks at night and early in the morning before the sunrise. It was definitely the stars that drew her in.

From around the corner Izumi could hear a conversation starting with a young sounding voice, "Genin Rysano Itawaka, reporting for guard duty sir! Ready for my mission!" Izumi giggled to herself at his youthful eagerness. He reminded her a bit of Kirei in his boyish ignorance. “Great kid. Sure is wild out there tonight. Keep your eyes peeled.” The man the boy had addressed as well as his comrades broke out into laughter, the humor of the task most likely having been lost on the boy. Even if he was naïve it was no reason to make fun of the boys enthusiasm for a duty that even Izumi found horribly boring. Izumi decided to make an example of the man, stopping him as he was leaving in her direction and dragging him back to the boy who was psted at the gates. He was protesting in terror but knew there was nothing much he could do about it by how easily Izumi dragged him against his will. "Do you think the safety of the village is a joke? I'm from Suna, the village elders sure were comfy before Lamya showed up. You have heard of what happened to Suna right?" The man's eyes widened in recognition, sure it had been a few years since the exams but Izumi's red hair and mentions of the Sand Village would surely be a dead giveaway.  "I-Izumi-sama, I-I was just making a joke. I apologize." Izumi would let go of the mans collar and he'd waste no time running off home. Once he was out of earshot Izumi would burst out laughing and turn to the genin with a kind smile dropping the tough girl act. "I'm Izumi, you must be Rysano. It's nice to meet you. Don't let people walk all over you like that. It's good that you're excited. My friend Nova should be here soon too. Tell me about yourself, we're in for a long night might as well get to know each other. It helps keep the sleep away too."

Guard duty? Nova looked again at the mission orders questioningly, hoping perhaps the letters would peel themselves from the page and reorder themselves before her very eyes. Not only was it an extraordinarily boring mission, the timing could not have been worse. Nova had plans to go to Izumi's for a nice meal and propose something.... but that would have to wait for a different time. The mission this even would not deprive herself from the company of the redheaded companion, but it would occupy their time and add another person into the equation leaving a less that romantic setting. That was fine though, ryo was ryo and it never hurt to have a little extra in her pocket. [i]Especially with the supplies for the gift she was planning on giving Izumi costing more than anticipated and the never ending cost of supplies for her creations. Regardless... this was not a mission she particularly cared about. From sunset to sunrise was not a particularly exciting prospect to stay awake through... not for a mission anyways. before she neglected to wake from a nap she had took to prepare herself several times before finally rousing herself after when she was supposed to leave. Still not particularly in a rush, she would dress casually, a thin tank top and shorts with her hair in a ponytail pulled high atop her head.

For a moment she considered only bringing one of her puppets with her, but an itching feeling at the back of her neck and reminder from a voice in the back of her head would urge her otherwise. This same niggling voice had been intruding upon her thoughts more and more recently, voicing concern to matters that Nova herself would not have given a second thought to before. Drawing emerald strings from her chakra out of her fingertips, her puppets would dance to life before her. As she left, the already dark sky signified her tardiness, and while she was not pleased with it did not think the lack of her presence would be of any harm with the the mission such as this. Besides, Izumi should be there already. The cool night air was pleasant against her skin as she decided to walk to the point they were supposed to meet, by all appearances a civilian but for the kiri headband embeded in the mahogany wood that made up her left leg from mid-thigh down and the presence of the looming puppets behind her. Her pale skin seemed to glow under moonlight, her face lit up with a pleasant expression as she stargazed as she walked, not needing to watch where she walked as she could feel every bump on the ground with Doku Tsuki. Though not looking as she stepped was difficult at first, practice made for skill and she barely needed to see at all to fight or move.

Nova would come to the gates just in time to see Izumi let go of the caller of an uniformed man and turn to speak to a youthful looking boy who towered over Izumi by several inches,"I'm Izumi, you must be Rysano. It's nice to meet you. Don't let people walk all over you like that. It's good that you're excited. My friend Nova should be here soon too. Tell me about yourself, we're in for a long night might as well get to know each other. It helps keep the sleep away too.". Cursing under her breath at how slow the wooden prosthetic leg made her, she limped towards the pair. Neither her not her puppets were quiet travelers, and could be heard from far enough off that they would likely turn their heads to see her approach. Unable to change her pace, she would smile and wave tiredly as she approached. First she would hug Izumi tightly and kiss her lightly upon the cheek, giving her a questioning look about the odor on her lips and why it would not have been shared, before turning to greet the one that she had gathered was their partner for such a mission. Letting go of Izumi reluctantly, Nova would turn and dip her chin towards the boy, “Hello! Sorry for the delay! My name is Nova”, she would pause and stick her hand out towards him in offer to shake his, “Nice to meet you Rysano.”. After exchange of pleasantries, she would speak again now onto the matter of the mission, “So did I miss anything? Any threats we should be on the lookout for tonight?”

Rysano started a little bit as his attention was pulled away from the treeline just outside of the village. He turned around to see the man whom he introduced himself to and had just made a joke at his expense being dragged toward him by his shirt collar. But his attention was quickly diverted to the figure dragging the man. The first thing he noticed was the striking waves of fiery red hair on her head. Although she was a good head shorter than him, she cut an imposing figure, not lessened by the whimpering guardsman she man-handled with such ease. "Do you think the safety of the village is a joke? I'm from Suna, the village elders sure were comfy before Lamya showed up. You have heard of what happened to Suna right?" She would spout at him. It would seem the man would take this very seriously and recognize the young ninja. He quickly sputtered an apology and ran off into the distance after being released from her grip. Rysano had heard about the tragedy that had happened in the Sand Village. It was before he graduated from the academy, but he still didn’t realize any of the ninja from there had come to Kirigakure.

‘What an interesting person.’ He would think to himself while trying to match her imposing for as she watched the man run. He did his best, but despite his height advantage, he was ill-practiced at cutting an imposing figure and he failed miserably. His soft face and smile wrinkles betrayed him for the caring person he was. As she turned back toward him a smile grew across her face and she let out a hearty laugh. Rysano decided to drop his failed tough act as well and replaced it with his trademark smile as she introduced herself. “I'm Izumi, you must be Rysano. It's nice to meet you. Don't let people walk all over you like that. It's good that you're excited.” Rysano had definitely had that problem in the past as well. Some people just found it easy to take care of his good nature. He knew it happened, but he always tried to see the best in people, even after they’d given him reason not to. He’d have to get better at reading people from now on. Letting someone take advantage of you as ninja can be a deadly mistake. Izumi seemed genuinely friendly to him though. “My friend Nova should be here soon too. Tell me about yourself, we're in for a long night might as well get to know each other. It helps keep the sleep away too.”

It was now that he noticed she was wearing the flak jacket of a higher ranking ninja over her other clothes. ‘Oh wow,’ He thought to himself, ‘Not only did they assign two other ninja to this mission, but at least one of the is a higher rank than I am. This is so cool!’ He would really have to pick their brains about what it was like to be ninja for so long and go on high-ranking missions. But for now he needed to focus back on the now. He extended his hand toward her and flashed his flawless, practiced smile. “Yep! I’m Rysano. It’s a pleasure to meet you too. I’m excited to meet a high-ranking ninja.” After the exchanged handshakes he would gesture back towards the village where the guardsman ran off. “Thanks for doing that for me. Sometimes I can get a little too eager. I just haven’t been a ninja for very long yet and I want to do my best.” Rysano would watch her reaction as he spoke. He was sure she was probably not too happy about being reduced to guard duty after all the cool stuff he was sure she had done, and now she’d have to deal with an inexperienced genin as well. He just hoped he’d be able to stay out of her way if anything happened. “I mostly specialize in medical ninjutsu. I can do a little bit of regular ninjutsu as well, but I never spent much time working on it. My parents were both medical ninja, and I was always really interested in what they did.” He told her. He wanted to make sure she knew what he was capable of, or more like what he wasn’t. “I try to focus as much as I can on the medical stuff. I’m not much of a fighter, but I try to patch everyone up as best as I can.”

It was at this point the he would notice another figure approaching from inside the village. Actually, he realized it was a few different figures. In the lead was a girl of equal height to Izumi, with equally bright hair. ‘This must be Nova.’ He thought to himself as she approached. He saw the other figures were in fact puppets. The one that really took his attention looked to be modeled after some sort of scorpion creature. It was very intimidating as Rysano had never seen anything like it before. When she got closer he realized she was limping towards them. Was she injured? Rysano began analyzing her to see if he could spot what had happened to her. It was then he spotted the Kiri headband affixed to her left leg, which appeared to be some sort of prosthetic. He relaxed a little at seeing this, as it meant she was not presently injured. Arriving, she would give Izumi a tight hug and a kiss on the cheek, after which she would turn to him and give him a nod. “Hello! Sorry for the delay! My name is Nova.” As he expected, she was their other teammate for tonight. She would extend a hand to him, which he would grasp while revealing another brilliant smile. “Rysano Itawaka. A pleasure.” He would say to her as they released each others grips.

“So did I miss anything? Any threats we should be on the lookout for tonight?” Nova would say, looking around the area. Of course, in the wake of his teammates arriving, Rysano had completely forgot about the reason they were actually all here. He quickly spun on his heel to face out the Northern Gates again. The trees were swaying slightly in the breeze and the smell of fresh water was flowing by as well. The torchlight didn’t illuminate much past the gate itself, so it was hard for him to see much aside from the silhouette of the treeline against the sky. “Nothing I was told about tonight. The previous guards seemed to get a big kick out of how easy this post was going to be.” He spoke with just a hint of bitterness about the encounter earlier. “I’d say we’re most likely in for a quiet night here.” He would move to the side of the gate to lean up against one side of the wall there, giving him a good view out of the village towards the road and back to where the two girls were standing as well. For the time being it was quiet, so this would be his chance to ask the stronger shinobi some questions.

“So Izumi, you mentioned something about Sunagakure. Are you from there? How long have you been in Kiri?” He didn’t want to overwhelm the two of them with too many questions, there were just a lot of things he was curious to learn about. Luckily it seemed like they had gotten off on the right foot so far, so maybe this wouldn’t be his last chance to talk to them. “Have you two known each other very long?” He opened the questions up to both of them now. “Nova, I can see that you are a puppet user. That’s very impressive. I would never have the focus to be able to use puppets.” He looked back toward the red-head. “What is your specialty Izumi?”

After the two of them were finished with his small-scale interrogation, a long drawn-out howl would break the quiet of the night. A flock of birds would be scared out of the tops of the forest and would take flight through the night sky. Rysano’s attention would snap back to the treeline as he scanned for any hint of what could have made the noise. Even after walking about thirty meters out from the gates, he still couldn’t see much that far out, as his perception wasn’t as trained as he would like it to be. The other two had probably already spotted the two shapes barreling toward the gates of Kirigakure. Long masses of gray-brown fur running of four legs, mouths filled with razor sharp teeth. Rysano couldn’t see them until they got much closer to him. “Wolves!” He would shout, jumping back away from them towards the gate and drawing a kunai. He was prepared to defend himself from the wolves as they arrived at the gates of the village.

The young man was smiling and seemed to appreciate Izumi’s efforts on his behalf. Izumi had grown up in the slums of Sunagakure, with an apparently very wealthy mother and no one else. She had witnessed her fair share of atrocities committed by man against his fellow. She’d witnessed the horrors of the collapse of a ninja village. The death, the looting, the fear and despair; Izumi never really felt at home in Kirigakure because of it. None of the people in her peerage in the village had ever been truly tested like the former Sand Ninja had. It was a unique feeling of loneliness one couldn’t describe. They may have accepted her as one of them but Izumi had never accepted herself as part of her new home. Even her home wasn’t in the typical Kirigakure style, opting for an architecture more similar to her home. The Karisuma had never really discussed her feelings about it to anyone save Nova, whom was at this time her other half. The young Rysano reminded Izumi a bit of Kirei and not just the blond hair; he had a way about him, a certain cheeriness that reminded her of the young man she’d met so long ago in the village.

The young man had expressed gratitude that Izumi had stepped in on his behalf. It made her feel nice on the inside to have helped the genin. He even answered her call to her a bit about himself,  “I mostly specialize in medical ninjutsu. I can do a little bit of regular ninjutsu as well, but I never spent much time working on it. My parents were both medical ninja, and I was always really interested in what they did. I try to focus as much as I can on the medical stuff. I’m not much of a fighter, but I try to patch everyone up as best as I can.” Izumi smiled warmly at the young man before replying, “I’m honestly not used to doing this gate stuff. I’m usually used for … err … pacification. Maybe they’re expecting something special tonight, who knows. If they are they didn’t tell me. But it’s nice to know you’re a medic, hopefully I don’t need you tonight. My mother was a medic too, in fact before Suna was destroyed I wanted to follow in her footsteps. But things change, instead I developed an aptitude for fighting, funny how things go.” Hearing a familiar sound approaching, the wooden leg of Nova Izumi perked up.
Izumi would give the hobbling figure that approached a warm smile and rush to greet her, giving her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. After introducing herself and greeting him, Rysano had a reply of his own.  A very familiar voice would break the air, “So did I miss anything? Any threats we should be on the lookout for tonight?”  Rysano was the first to reply, “Nothing I was told about tonight. The previous guards seemed to get a big kick out of how easy this post was going to be. I’d say we’re most likely in for a quiet night here.” Granted, had it been only Izumi and Nova, the Karisuma would have laughed at guard duty as well, but given the interaction with Rysano, she opted for something more serious. “You never know what’s out here , that’s why we’re here. Nothing yet though.”  The blonde haired young man sauntered off to peer over the wall for a little bit before returning.

“So Izumi, you mentioned something about Sunagakure. Are you from there? How long have you been in Kiri?” “After Suna was destroyed, Nova and I left for Kumo for the exams. Nova won, only hardly defeating myself. To more directly answer your question it’s been about three years. But yes we’re both suna natives, we even have our headbands back at home.” After remarking on Nova’s puppets, Rysano turned back to Izumi, “What is your specialty Izumi?” Before Izumi could answer, a howl pierced the air. Izumi smiled, it was almost as if the heavens had given her an excuse to show off, “I’ve already hinted at it, but it’ll be easier for me to just show you.” With a grin Izumi would send out her Raiton chakra into the environment. Izumi was able to identify the locations of the six wolves. Izumi really loved this trick, as she increased her bodies adrenaline output before disappearing with a blur of red hair.

Izumi had decided to toy with the animals, mostly to give the young genin a show and secretly to show off to Nova as well. When the first wolf lunged at Izumi she caught it by the throat easily and tossed it aside, having flowed chakra into the animals neck she was ready for when the next animal attacked. Feigning surprise she would allow the other mongrel to lunge for ankle. Once it’s teeth connected there was a puff of smoke and to the animal’s shock it was instead holding it’s pack mate’s throat in its jaws. Izumi had used the substitution jutsu to devastating effect on the animals. Izumi had the hint of a smile on her face, she loved this. It brought her immense satisfaction to find victory in battle especially through clever traps. However, the young woman was already growing bored of the canid foes.  Perhaps she’d let Nova show off a bit for the young man. In another blur of red hair, Izumi throttled the wolf standing over its now dead pack mate. The animal let out a surprised yelp as the blade sunk into its heart. With a final blur of movement, Izumi was near her comrades again. Tapping Nova and her shoulder, Izumi leaned in to whisper “Four more, show off a bit.”

Nova had felt the wolves long before the young man who had identified himself as Rysano shouted out their presence. To be honest, Nova thought pointing them out when she had noticed them was unnecessary and doubted a pack of wolves, no matter how strong, would wander near a trio of humans unless starving. Izumi having jumped into action took down two of them in a manner that was a little showy even for her, the use of any jutsu at all completely unneeded as Nova was certain that Izumi would be able to dispatch even a whole pack of wolves with nothing more than the blade on her wrist and physical prowess. Only taking two of the ravenous wolves down, Izumi darted back to Nova's side, leaning in and whispering in her ear, “Four more, show off a bit”. A shy smile would cross Nova's face, she was not often one for showing off and prefered to deal with combat as quickly and efficiently as possible. Nothing more than a pack of wolves however, certainly did not need caution.  Drawing her fingers back the chakra threads from her fingers would disconnect but not dissipate, knotting themselves up before sinking into the bodies of the two puppets. Both the scorpion and spider stayed animated under Nova's trained hand, though no visible strings connected the two. With minimal warning, the giant metal scorpion dove beneath the earth as the spider charged across the earth towards the remaining wolves of the pack which now growled as they prowled around the edge of their vision with glowing eyes. Through the darkness, the eyes watched the mechanical beast gallop towards them, metal legs clattering to the ground and drawing attention to itself successfully.

Crossing her arms, Nova herself would lean back slightly relaxing as she let her constructs work for her. As expected, the shaggy canines circles around the arachnid beast hungrily and seemingly unaware that their prey was not as tasty a meal as they might hope. Closer they would orbit Kurogokegamu, who now that it had drawn their attention seemed to slump to the side slightly. Even the wolves seemed confused by the sudden motionlessness of their intended hunt, the largest of the four remaining darting forward to sniff at the shiny black shell of the puppet. Nearing the construct the wolf would pad carefully, its nose leaving breath marks on the shell as it snuffled at it. With no warning, not even the low rumble of earth, a metal blade two feet across would dart from the flat earth below the hound.

Stabbing upward, the metal barb of Doku Tsuki's tail would jab into the soft flesh of the canines stomach, a scream of pain would sound from the wolves maw as it was lifted several feet into the air, impaled on the now crimson barb. The other three would jolt backwards with a yelp as what could have been assumed to have been the alpha now hung in the air on the puppets metal tail. Though the jump back was quick, it was not nearly quick enough to avoid the next quick strike from the puppet under Nova's will. Simultaneously the twin pincers would dart out from the earth to either side, grabbing two of the unsuspecting canines with the nearly meter long claws. From the left, the claws would sink in to the animals throat, a sick crunching sound followed by gurgling as its neck was crushed, the left however was further away and got caught by its hind leg. Doku Tsuki's grip was high and strong, and though the wolf would flail and snap it had to power against the vice it was caught in. Howling in pain, the beast fought to no avail as with ease the pincer was yanked back into the earth taking the flailing mass of grey fur beneath the earth. The fourth turned tail and ran, as the stench of warm blood hit its nose and stained the ground and his kins fur. Rising up from the turned ground, the puppet shook the dirt from its carapice and shook the tail from side to side violently, flinging the lethally injured wolf several meters to the side. From the left pincer a corpse fell, from the right it was released still buried beneath the earth with several shattered bones and howling in pain. Swaying as it aimed true, Doku Tsuki's tail would point towards the final fleeing caning and fired, a harpoon arrow whistling through the wind with a silver chain rattling behind it. A thud would sound as it found its target, the air being knocked from the beast as the arrow settled several inches into it's flesh between its ribs before the chain would start reeling the beast back into the puppets waiting grasp.

Nova would turn her head to Izumi slowly, “too much?”

As Rysano leaped away from the wolves in preparation for defending the village against their attack, his thoughts turned to his comrades. This is where he would actually see what these two were capable of, and if they would be able to make up for his lack of combative abilities. He knew they were powerful ninja and they should be more than enough to handle anything out here, but there was a small shadow of a doubt in his mind that, if something were able to make it past the two of them, he wasn’t sure how well he could handle it on his own.

He began thinking of different tactics to employ utilizing his teammates in the battle. He saw now that there were, in fact, four more wolves, on top of the two he had originally seen. ‘That’s okay,’ He thought to himself, analyzing the situation before him, ‘If they can keep at least four of them distracted, I should be able to occupy at least…’ Before he was able to think too deeply about his new friends and how they would deal with the enemies, Izumi lept into action. With a quick channel of her chakra, her body disappeared from view in a blur of her blazing hair.

The next time she was visible to him, she had grasped one of the creatures by the neck as it lunged at her, teeth shining in the torchlight. She deftly tossed its body off to the side before quickly turning and seemingly being surprised by a second opponent. Rysano watched as the beast clamped its jaws around one of her ankles, only for the shinobi’s body to be replaced by the jugular of the first wolf she had apprehended. ‘Incredible move.’ Rysano watched wide-eyed at the display. He could hardly see her movements as she made them, but the results were obvious. One last movement showed her ending the shocked beast’s life with a blade before disappearing one last time to reappear next to Nova.

There seemed to be a transfer of position as now Nova entered the fray in Izumi’s place. Rather, she didn’t enter into the fight herself but instead moved her hands in a way that the chakra strands that ran to the back of her puppets seemed to dissipate from view, but the puppets themselves did not collapse as is normal for puppets with no strings attached. Instead, the one modeled after a scorpion suddenly dove straight through the earth underneath it and disappeared from sight and the spider-shaped puppet ran directly towards the shaken group of canines.

Each footfall of the spider clanged against the packed dirt as it made its way towards the snarling foes, their attention undividedly focused on the incoming figure. Nova relaxed as her puppets began to work independently. The wolves now circled and snapped aggressively at the spider puppet, which after reaching its destination in the middle of the group, seemed to halt function and slump over. Just as one of the beasts came closer to investigate the motionless target Rysano saw a large blade exit the ground and plunge itself directly into the closest wolf. Immediately following, each of the scorpion’s pincers erupted nearby to catch two of the remaining targets in their grasp.

‘Very clever,’ Rysano spectated with a curious smile, ‘She used her numbers for an interesting distraction and surprise tactic.’ He tore his gaze away from the action to glance at the two girls standing together. ‘These two are definitely something else.’ As his view returned to the battlefield, he saw the final wolf being dragged back towards the waiting scorpion puppet, impaled by an arrow attached to its tail by a silver chain. The only sounds filling the air were the rattling of the metal as it was retracted and the pain yelps of the final dog, which were quickly silenced as it reached the puppets. Rysano only then realized that he had been standing, slack-jawed at the entire display. His hands, still clutching the kunai, laid limp at his sides, as if even they knew he would be of no use in that battle. He felt a twinge of regret in his chest that all he accomplished was being a mere spectator then entire time. He hadn’t even attempted to act. He simply watched as someone else took care of the mess.

He returned the knife to his equipment pouch and slowly approached the two women. They looked pleased with their work as they surveyed the outcome together. He reached up to scratch the back of his head as he flashed a sheepish smile in their direction. “Well, I’m sorry I didn’t exactly jump into the action there.” He laughed nervously at the two of them. He started to worry about what they would think of him now. Would they believe him a coward, too afraid to enter combat with even as lowly an opponent as some mangy wolves? Or perhaps they would just assume he was a useless genin, unfit to don the villages headband. These thoughts weighed on him, but the smile never dimmed in response.

“But that was incredible out there! I’ve never seen anything like that.” He gestured to Izumi, “I mean literally I could hardly actually see you.” And looking back toward Nova, he would bow to her, “And I have never witnessed such masterful manipulation of puppets. You two are truly amazing.” He would rise from the bow and smile as large as he could. He raised one hand and willed his medical chakra to encompass it, giving it a warm yellow aura that shone slightly in the dark around them. It was purely for the looks. “If either of you had actually been injured at all, that’s where I would come in,” He let out another set of nervous laughs, “But it’s quite obvious that I won’t be necessary in that department either.” And he let the chakra fade from his hand as it returned to his side.

Quickly, he turned on one heel and walked out toward the puppets and mangled corpses of the wolves. A breeze from the north brought with it the smells of the forest, unable to completely neutralize the prevailing smell of blood in the air. It was a smell not favored by the young medical ninja, but not one he was unfamiliar or accustomed to. He would quickly survey the land that stretched out in front of him for any other threats. Seeing none in his immediate view, he would return to the gate and rest against one of the sides, attempting his best nonchalant lean. His body was still fairly tense from a mixture of watching all of the action and his own encroaching self-doubt, but he masked it with another large smile.

“So!” He would gesture for them both to join him on the side of the opening. He would open a pack he had brought with him and left near the guard post and reveal a few different sweet pastries he had brought with him and offer them to the girls. “I want to hear about your adventures as high-ranking ninja. What kind of missions were you assigned while you were still in Suna? What were the Chunin exams like?” Yet again, Rysano was interrogating the two of them like a child who had just met a celebrity and was brimming with a thousand questions. But he knew they had the rest of the night to discuss things, so he would pace his questions. He had hoped to have made a good impression on them so far, and he didn’t want to ruin his chance at his first real friends within the village by asking too many questions.

They would talk for the rest of the night, Rysano listening intently to everything the other two would say. He learned much about their lives as Suna shinobi and their adventures. The rest of the guard shift passed by without incident, and as the sun began to crest the horizon and guards arrived to replace them, the three ninja said their goodbyes and headed on their way to their respective homes for a well earned rest.

Izumi

Izumi

A-rank
Nova was a good pet taking Izumi’s command to show off to heart, the younger sent out her spider puppet first and took a relaxed pose. It was always fun watching Nova put on a puppet show; Izumi would take her mark next to the younger woman and put her arm around her shoulder pulling her in close. She was definitely inviting her over. The scorpion rumbled into the earth, digging deep and lying in wait to strike. Izumi gave Nova a sweet kiss on the cheek while she toyed with the wolves. Nova trying to concentrate leaned back and crossed her arms trying to make it look like it took no effort at all. Was she wrong? The wolves were far from the hardest challenged the women had faced. They’ve stared death in the face more than once and the wolves definitely did not wear the creeping visage of doom. The wolves went purely on instinct however their instincts were nowhere near as strong as Izumi’s or Nova’s. The animals thought themselves the predators, not realizing they were truly a plaything for the killers they had unfortunately stumbled upon for their own early demise. Izumi could sense Nova’s chakra on the mechanical beast below, feeling it dart towards the surface to eviscerate its quarry. The satisfying sound of a blade sinking into flesh would precede the scream of the first wolf, Doku Tsuki’s tail blade had sunk into the beast killing it in mere moments after the strike landed lifting it several feet in the air as it bled out. As the confused canines resolve broke with yelps, two more of them were quickly killed by the pair of pincers crashing through the ground to crush them. Two more brutal but swift deaths accompanied with labored breaths, yelps, and howls. The final fleeing wolf was allowed false hope before being mowed down by a blast from the canon on Doku Tsuki killing it in seconds.

As Nova opened her mouth to say, “too much?”, she would be met with an aggressive kiss by Izumi who had forgotten about their charge, the young genin who would soon remind her of his presence, sure she could still sense him using her sensory technique but she wasn’t really paying attention to that given how much she’d enjoyed Nova’s show. Izumi had let her guard down and jumped a little when she heard the young man’s voice, “Well, I’m sorry I didn’t exactly jump into the action there.” Izumi would turn around her face beat red for having forgotten him and giving into her passions for Nova. Luckily he’d made himself known before she went too far with it. The young man had a sheepish smile that came with a nervous laugh. The Karisuma woman didn’t really feel bad for the wolves, only for making this poor young man feel so unnecessary. Recovering from her embarrassment with a smile, the fiery woman elected to use honesty as her tool here, “We just wanted to show off to keep the night interesting. I’m sure you’d have done just fine against those pups.” This young man really grew on Izumi as he chose to stroke her ego, “But that was incredible out there! I’ve never seen anything like that. I mean literally I could hardly actually see you.” And looking back toward Nova, he would bow to her, “And I have never witnessed such masterful manipulation of puppets. You two are truly amazing.” Izumi looked towards Nova and said in a low tone only she’d be able to hear “Can we keep it?”
Izumi didn’t understand why Rysano was so eager to prove himself to not be useless, Izumi loved the spotlight yet he persisted “If either of you had actually been injured at all, that’s where I would come in. But it’s quite obvious that I won’t be necessary in that department either.” Izumi responded with another kind smile, “Oh you’re a medic too! I was in the medic corps back home in Suna, my life took me down a different path obviously but Nova is a pretty skilled medic herself. She kept with the healing path a bit more than I did.” The blond young man approached the carnage seemingly wishing to inspect it closer. Before returning to the gate once more to take up his post he would gesture for the women to follow wanting to continue to learn about them. Izumi joined the young man dragging Nova along with her by her hand. When Rysano offered to share his pastries Izumi happily took one and ate it giving Nova a look that said, “We’re definitely keeping this one.” The young man spoke up after letting the pair enjoy the treats he’d shared, “I want to hear about your adventures as high-ranking ninja. What kind of missions were you assigned while you were still in Suna? What were the Chunin exams like?”

“Truth be told we haven’t had much adventures beyond the average tasks like what we’re up to tonight. It’s not as fun as you’d think, it’s just a lot more responsibility. I hate it, I just want to duel other ninja not much opportunity for that. Even the one time I was sent to … silence some dangerous words, the boy lasted mere moments. The exams were the same way, besides Nova I faced children who’d never seen a real day of combat in your lives. The exams are a mockery of the reality of battle. We’ve seen untold horrors and the ravages of war. They tried to mimic the horrors you might face in a way that made a spectacle of it, like it was a game. Real life isn’t so forgiving there’s no proctors to save you when you get backed into a corner in the real world. Enough of my ramblings thou-“ Izumi’s words would be cut off by sudden whimper of pain from the woman. The Lady Karisuma had involuntarily decided to give Rysano a bit of work and small confidence boost by getting a sprained ankle. Hobbling over to a position near Rysano she’d sit down in front of him and wink to Nova to let her know she was okay, “See, we’re only cool until you remember we’re human. Can you take a look for me?” The young man was pretty good for a genin as he flowed his healing energies into Izumi easily ebbing away the pain while he wrapped her ankle up and continued to flow his chakra into the injured area to help speed the healing process.

The Karisuma gave the young man a hug a kiss on the cheek, Izumi loved the next part, she was so used to this reaction from those she’d kissed. The young man turned bright red, laughed a bunch and got a big dorky smile. Izumi smiled back at him and giggled a little it was like clockwork. Not many Ninja had romantic experience and it always brought a smile to her face to use hers to put people off guard. The night continued with Rysano interrogating them like an eager student wanting to learn as much as he could. The Karisuma woman didn’t tire of it and would continue to humour him until the sun rose making the night pass quickly. “This has been the most pleasant guard duty I’ve ever been assigned Rysano. I hope to see you again. If you need someone to help you train you can find me at my house, Nova and I are usually there when we’re not on a mission.” Izumi would give the young man instructions on how to find her lofty residence tucked away in seclusion before dragging Nova off in the direction of said abode for their “rest”.
