Kuni

Kuni

D-rank
The Koudo Stadium was a gargantuan structure, a platform of entertainment for merchants and nobles and a fast track to fame and fortune for overzealous gladiators from all walks of life. Be it armor-clad samurai or chakra-wielding shinobi, the stadium was primed each day for a new set of bloodied battles, none ever the same as the last. Fortunately, the deaths were far and few in between with professional medics on standby.

Normally, being a kunoichi, one would expect Kuni to have her name written on one of the leaderboards. The top sixteen were always advertised close to the evening – the sun was already setting between two mountains in the western horizon – to encourage betting. It was simple money for all parties involved: the organisers, the participants and the audience. Each got their fair share, in a manner of speaking. Kuni wasn’t entirely talented to almost surely securing a spot in the round of sixteen as much as her opponents were often file after file of civilians blinded by dreams of grandeur. She was small fry; the bigger, flashier tournaments were spaced to starve the audience into skyrocketing demand.

Even from outside the stadium, a good fifty meters away, Kuni could hear the roars chanting the inhuman sport. Tonight was one such night were Chunin and Special Jonin, maybe even the rare Jonin, participated to make a quick and heavy buck. Kuni had no place in a world of legends but even if the occasion had been less riveting, her presence would still be found beyond the stadium’s grand walls, tall as they were almost like the Adamantine Bastion.

No, rather the girl faced down an opponent of her own choosing. Hard, solidary, and made of straw, the dummy was carved in multiple places, subject to the whims of kunai and senbon held in her arms, the former in her left and three of the latter in her right. Her ninja pouch by her waist dangled half-empty on her left. Her face boasted a layer of sweat, a testament to the girl’s deliberate training the evening amidst the cheers of the crowd behind her.

There was a lot she needed to get done. It was the sole reason she was found in one of the most isolated locations in the Village Hidden in the Stone. But for that, she would need to get stronger, and very much so. Her only saving grace would be to avoid having to run through this alone.
