Kugeki

Kugeki

“My my, you are growing beautifully” Kugeki smiled as he stroked the leaves of a newly budding Kosumosu, he always loved the Kosumosu flower, they reminded him of his adopted Mother. He gazed at the pink flower as his mind drifted to memories of him and his Mother planting flowers, at first it was for punishment, as she had caught him smashing the neighbors flower pots and tearing up the flowers. Kugeki was always a wild child and was often unruly, but his mother helped him with that.

“Now you must never forget Kugeki, all life is sacred, from you to the tiny lady bug on this flower. Everything has value” Kugekis mother stared at her adoptive child with a stern but loving look.
“But, what about the rabbits?” Kugeki gave a devilish grin, being smart was his favorite game. “Why don’t you stop them from eating the flowers and destroying them?”
His mother gave a weary sigh “I am to old to catch them, and I doubt you could if you wanted to. That is just the way of nature. I would if I could my son.”
Kugeki frowned and looked at his mom “You don’t think I can catch them?”
His mother laughed “and what would you do with it once you caught it? Eat it? We don’t eat animals Kugeki you know that, they are living creatures just like you and me.”
“NOOO Mom I didn’t say that!” Kugeki moaned as if he’s heard the lecture a thousand times “I would just do it because I can! And to keep your flowers safe” Kugeki beamed with pride at his noble motives.
“Well how about this, you help me plant these Kosumosus, and then protect them from the rabbits ok? If you can do that I’ll take you to the Administrators Building.”

Kugeki lit up at the mention of the Hokages work place, his mother knew how to motivate him all too well. Kugeki went at the task with a voracious attitude, staying up all night to watch the flowers, even after repeated reminders from his mother that rabbits need sleep too, he didn’t care, he wanted to catch a rabit. He was always so close, as there was always a white rabbit that would wait until the last second to dart away. Almost as if to tease him, the rabbit would then hop back toward the flower garden while Kugeki had his back turned, and then dart away when Kugeki would finally notice. It frustrated Kugeki to be outclassed by such a small animal, but it gave him a respect for all things in nature big or small.

Although Kugeki never caught one, his mother still took him to the administrators building. It was a great day for Kugeki as he stared up at the massive building with the faces carved in stone behind it. It was a magnificent sight to behold for the young Kugeki, “My face is going to be on there one-day momma”.
“I don’t doubt it Kugeki, I don’t doubt it.”
Kugeki was snapped out of his nostalgia by the familiar sound of rustling, he looked around until he found it. A small, all white rabbit with jet black eyes. It was frozen, it knew Kugeki had seen him. Kugeki smiled, today would be the day he caught a rabbit, today would be the day he fulfilled his promise to his mother and today would be the day he rightfully earned that trip to the administrators building. Today would be the day he made up for his neighbors smashed flower bed. Today would be the day.

The rabbit, however, had different plans. As soon as Kugeki made even the slightest move to get up the rabbit was gone.  All the enthusiasm and energy flooded out of Kugeki, he still couldn’t catch the rabbits. He looked down at his Kosumosus and noticed on with a bite in it. He frowned and gave a steely look into the forest. “I’ll be damned if I let that rabbit eat my flowers again, he doesn’t have to eat them there’s plenty of grass and food around for him.” Kugeki grumbled as he walked back to his house, thinking of ways he could catch the perpetrator.
The next morning Kugeki was sat outside watching his flower pot, a warm cup of tea in his hand and a lamp at his feet, he decided he wasn’t going to let sleep get in the way of his pursuits and woke up before sunrise. Kugeki began to think the rabbit wasn’t going to show again when, suddenly. There it was, the elusive rabbit. This time Kugeki was prepared, and he crouched on the balls of his feet and waited for the perfect moment. The rabbit began nibbling on the flower, Kugeki held his breath and waited. Beads of sweat dripped on his forehead, finally for a split second, the bunny closed its eyes.

Kugeki leapt out of his hiding spot and dashed torwards the bunny. Completely caught off guard, the rabbit scrambled to run away, flinging dirt and rocks everywhere the bunny careened off into the grassy fields instead of the dense forest. “Now I have you”. Kugeki pushed himself even harder, his legs burned and his heart was beating a million times a second but he could tell he was gaining on the little white puffball. He kept running careful to conserve energy as the rabbit started to slow down. Not use to extended running, the rabbit began to tire. As the Rabbit slowed down Kugeki did the same until he was at a stop, his eyes still on the rabbit. “Not so fast little guy”. Kugeki grinned and started doing hand motions “Shichuro no Jutsu!”. The ground rumbled all around the rabbit as 4 large wooden pillars shot up in a perimeter around the rabbit. Walls began to form and slowly envelope the space around the rabbit. It scampered around the edges but it was too late, it was caught.
Kugeki calmly walked up to the enclose and did some hand signals as a doorway was formed and Kugeki walked in. The rabbit was now too scared to move, and Kugeki could see that. He walked up to the animal and knelt down next to it, “It’s ok little guy I’m not going to hurt you, I just wanted to show you I could catch you” He gave the rabbit a grin, and then felt stupid for doing so. With a wave of his hands the enclosure began to sink back into the ground. Kugeki stroked the rabbits back gently and fed it some carrots. “Next time you’re hungry just come to me ok? No need to eat the flowers” He gave another goofy grin as the rabbit hopped away quickly into the dense forest.

The next day Kugeki still didn’t trust the rabbit to not come eat his food, so he sat outside his house again in the same hidden position as last night. He strained his eyes in the dark to see through the grass, thinking the rabbit might try to be more secretive in his approach. Instead, much to the surprise of Kugeki the rabbit boldly hopped out of the grassy fields and walked up to the flowers. Kugeki tensed up as he got ready to pounce again, but he was surprised again when instead of munching on the flowers the bunny hopped up to him, as if it knew he was there all along. It sniffed at his feet and gave him a knowing look.

Kugeki laughed and fished around his pockets for the carrots he promised “Here you go buddy”. The rabbit nibbled on the carrots contently and glanced at him, as if to ask for more. Kugeki obliged and gave the rabbit some more carrots, he smiled “are you going to be my new friend?”

Kugeki couldn’t be righter, as over the next few weeks the rabbit would show up to his flowerbed like clockwork, at the same time every day. Kugeki would be there as well, delighted to spend time with his new friend. Eventually the rabbit began following Kugeki home, always asking for more delicious carrots. Kugeki took the pet in and began making a small burrow area for it outside his house, careful to make it just like he’s seen them before. Before long, the bunny was a permanent residence of the Kugeki household, and even helped in growing the flowers by offering up fertilizer.

In the end Kugeki could think of no better way to honor his mother by not only defending his flowers from the rabbits, but also taking one in and making it apart of the Kugeki family. He cried happy tears as he thought of his adopted mother sitting in heaven watching him from above, he hoped that he had made her happy. He hoped that he had finally made up for destroying the neighbors flower bed so long ago, Kugeki liked to think he had. In his mind though he had a lot more to protect, and a lot more to make up for.
