Sabaku Haruka

D-rank

The sun had lifted up over the horizon, shining an array of colors into the sky. It was rather early yet Haruka had found himself awake. He stared out his window with heavy eyes, inhaling the cool air that blew past him. His thin fingers ran through his tangled charcoal locks. He twirled a bit around his finger before deciding to get up from his bed. There was a pair of clothes folded neatly on the chair in the corner of the room. He had placed those there the previous night as he always had. His room was small and dull. A shoddy mattress on an old bed frame rested in the corner by the large window. There was a narrow desk up against the wall with a dirty mirror hanging above it and a chair sitting oddly in the middle of the room. It was quiet. His father had already left the house. So it was just him. After getting dressed, he made his way downstairs into the kitchen. He spent a few minutes with the refrigerator open. Haruka decided to grab a juice box and a piece of bread from off the table before heading out the door.

He headed towards his usual training spot. For some reason, the particular spot was a grueling place to be. The heat seemed to radiate off the area no matter where you went. To him, however, it was a nice feeling. He took a large sip from the juice box and a bite from the bread. There weren’t many people out this early in the morning. It was the perfect time for him. His glassy, black eyes drew attention towards the few that had walked passed him. But it was the same usual people he saw daily. However, they never acknowledged him. A stray dog caught his sights as it desperately trailed after him. Likely for the bread in his hand. With a simple shrug, he threw the piece of bread back towards the skinny mutt. “You need it more than me.” His words were muttered under his breath; a hint of sadness in his voice. The village wasn’t in good shape as of late. He took another sip from the juice box before throwing it in the nearest trash can.

Haruka had finally arrived at the area, eyeing the few people who were already hard at work. There was a certain spot on the field that he liked in particular. After making his way to the spot, he sat down and crossed his legs, watching his peers work diligently at honing their skills. Eventually, he fell into a state of trance. His eyes open yet his mind shut off from the world. Meditation was the most important part of the morning. Unfortunately, unknown to him, he didn’t do it right. No one paid him any mind. His eerie stares were a normal occurrence to the regulars. But to anyone who didn’t go there often, it was a bit disturbing. While his body was stiff, it was relaxed. A mere pebble could throw him off balance. But each distraction hardened his resistance to being interrupted. Whether it was a bad thing or good, he did this every morning.
