Ano

Ano

D-rank
It had not been long since Ano had returned. No, it was rather odd to him, in fact. After having stayed amongst the incense and the monsters, the illusionary opulence and the wastelands, he found the superficially straight-forward manner in which the world of the living operated to be both familiar and entirely, utterly alien. No one hid anything from him physically, yet they often used words to confuse and mislead. The creatures of Nisemono-no-Kuni were honest folk, if at least in talk. Some did, to be fair, perpetrate their share of crimes and mis-deeds. However, they never lied, not once. Perhaps one did not have anything to gain from lying in the world of the dead. No one seemed to wish any ill, at least those who were not overtly mis-anthropic; the same here, though he could not perhaps say entirely the same for persons such as the Mugetsu he had met there. Another person sent from the world above, or rather, if Ano was to believe his words. He could have been a spirit having long-since taken residency, disguised by the veil that so enveloped the area. Either way, he was only but interested in indulging his desires, as far as Ano knew. That was the closest he believed most came to having ill will: doing harm by not considering others in favor of chasing one’s desires. It was, then, apparent to Ano: he was, too, possibly at fault for the same thing. However, he had to introspect on this subject, being that he did not know all of the things he might want for. Shelter. Food. Water. A peaceful life. He had very little in a material sense to his name, and sold the only thing he had a long time ago for his very basic traveling supplies. Having nothing was an interesting way of living, at least from an outside point of view. Because Ano had very little to start with, he had very little that he actually desired. Having survived for so long with naught else but the bare necessities, even when coming to clothing, and having little contact with other people in extended periods, he had few if any thoughts entertaining the possession of something he didn’t need. After all, he was a nomad. Carrying items that were not required only was a waste of his energy, and he by his own admittance did not have much to spare. With nothing but a loin-cloth, more of a breech-cloth, covering his front and back down to mid-thigh, leaving the side of the leg exposed and nothing else of his legs or upper body covered, Ano had more than acclimated to the heat of the Land of Wind. It did, of course, help that he was knowledgeable on where one could find shade and water.

It so happened that he was in one of these locations at present. The green-barked tree, a succulent that excelled in the storage of water, provided intermittent darkness with its not-sparsely, but not-densely populated foliage and branches. Bits of light eked their way through the gaps of each small shoot and leaf. Unlike the normal days in the area surrounding the Hidden Sand Village, a ninja haven known even to a non-combatant like Ano, the sky was filled with clouds. They were of none a dark coloration, however, being that these were scraping by, survivors of what was probably a grand storm that swept over the mountains. It was clouds like these that brought the small amount of rain that all beings in this desert place knew they were blessed to receive. The clouds rolled not over the cerulean heavens, but only drifted in that seemingly infinite sea of blue. A great abundance of what the locals would call cirrus, feathery and thin clouds that could drift very low to the mountains. Oh, he thought, what a sensation, to be enveloped by a cloud! Too akin to swimming underwater, yet perhaps all the freedom from being submerged? A titillating thought.

The rest of the area was not to be missed, of course. Ano sat on the lower embankment of the reservoir that very likely fed the entirety of the citizens of the Land of Wind. After all…it was enormous! Ano had not seen a body of water this large that was landlocked and so far inland, and here it was in the supposedly barren desert. He could only, then, attempt to restrain his own curiosity. If the Sand and the Daimyo had such large stores of water at their disposal, not to mention the odd few persons which could utilize the Water Release, why did they keep on in their old way of life? He had seen the conservative practices the natives to this area had employed, and were likewise mimicked by the larger civilizations. Were they preparing for something? Their stored water certainly could not be for some sort of event they were planning, or had foreseen? Certainly not a drought, or the end of ninja? Perhaps it was just that Ano was only seeing the surface of things.

His thoughts gave way to wonder as he truly took in what exactly was around him. A large wall of sand-stone behind him, which housed a large building, a structure built solely of metal. Metal that, in fact, was rusting. The towering four walls, adorned with but a few windows clouded with fused sand, seemed to stand the test of time, and even as they corroded stood strong against what Ano knew could be harsh weather in the Land of Wind. Sandstorms and haboobs that could last for days without relent, days that were otherwise filled with nothing but sun that beat down on man and metal alike. The repeated heating from the sun combined with the cooling from the chilly nights….it could only warp whatever alloy was comprising the place. It would be a grand shame if the building somehow collapsed. The sandstone, being one of the more brittle rocks comparatively, would probably not hold up to the repeated battery of falling structures, not to mention the strain near the cliff's edge. Right, the strain....

The cliff that Ano, coincidentally enough, had descended. Not intentionally, of course. The rock had given way, under his foot. Indeed, even whatever prowess he had gained....if he had begun to matter at all, it wasn't here. He couldn't save himself. The earth itself, once so fond of him, even a cradle to him under the stars, now rent at his flesh, tearing the surface of his skin asunder and flaying his muscles and entrails. Each tumble against the more eroded rocks left him with bruises and abrasions. He was quite certain something in his upper body had cracked, from the sound alone.

Nearing the bottom of the fall, he began rolling rather than bumping along. As he ground to a halt, he struggled to lay on his back rather than on his stomach.

The sun was out. The flowers beside him were blooming, he could even hear the birds singing.

What a beautiful day to be alive.

Harichimo

Harichimo

Harichimo had left the secluded hotel room in favor of exploring the local sights. He had been informed by some merchants of a huge metal building that was now abandoned. The building itself was just a factory but the real sight was the reservoir that was not to far off from it. Harichimo had worn more loose clothes like a pair of shorts, a white undershirt, and his jacket that bore the symbol of Iwagakure. Harichimo had wrapped up his arms in the usual fashion with bandages. He made sure to string a couple of canteens together and fill them with water. He would be a fool to go out and travel this harsh land without at least one. He had learned his lesson from when he had rode horse back through the desert to just get back home. With the bright sun beating down and and the dry wind cutting into his face, he would begin the trip following the directions he was given.

After a short while he reached the first signs of life in the desert. A small tree with a bandana tied around it would point him in the direction he would want to take. The path would take him to a large wall of stone which had a small tunnel that ran through with day light on the other side. He crawled through the tunnel and happened upon a sight of the reservoir. There was a huge patch of blue and green among the brown and red sands. Harichimo looked around the see the wear and tear that the small periods of rain left on the rock faces. All of the walls were ground down and smooth from years of channeling water into this one spot.

As he walked and admired at the nature of the location he heard what sounded like rocks falling and flesh following. He started to jog to where he thought he heard the sounds were coming from and could notice the dust trail down the side of the wall. He wasn't sure if anyone had been caught up in the rock slide but he had to make sure. He was careful to work hand and foot holds and follow down the wall as quick as possible. Once down he noticed the body of someone laying on their back. They seemed in rough shape and Harichimo knew he might have to act fast. He jogged over and unwound the bandages from the palms of his hands.

"Hey if you are conscious I need you to talk to me. Stay awake and don't drift off." He would say as he knelt next to the person. He put his hands together and focused to bring forth the green aura of medical ninjutsu. "You might feel some stinging as I repair your body. If you think anything is broken just speak up and I can give it some extra attention.." Harichimo hovered his hands over the person's body and focused to start the healing jutsu's work.

And yet what a beautiful day to go back. Oh, it was so soon to do so, though. It was...a bit dis-heartening, to say the least. That Miko might see him again so soon. Well...would she, though? That last vision he had in the Nisemono-no-Kuni...it very well might have been that skel'tal girl fading away into nothing. It was always rumored, after all, that those who bring back the dead are destined to die. But...what happened if you were already dead?

He might as well have been, too. Five, no. A ten-meter fall like that could kill any man. It was a wonder that he was even surviving this long.

A voice....odd. He could not make out the words. Was it the shock of the fall?

The puddle below him. Of course, he had been losing blood this entire time.

However, a touch, and warmth. This...this felt nice. Ano would not have minded being able to help people like this, not at all. But he had to learn it himself.

A hand touched the wrist of the person who had assisted him; a symbol for 'no more'. Ano was already healed, at least externally. He felt fine enough.

This one can only give a smile and thanks. Please, do not make more of an inconvenience than it needs be; this is fine.

Shakily, the man stood and gave a smile that he knew not to be weak, frail in expression. To the north-east, to the Sand he was off to. Perhaps it was rude of him. Was this considered spurning someone's help?

He knew what he meant and how he felt. 'Twas what mattered the most.
