Guard duty again. Not even patrolling the outside of the village this time around. Yngol was stuck watching the rear gate. The gate that nobody ever used, the gate that was empty and lifeless most of the time. That was probably the reason that they were giving this assignment to genin straight out of the academy. Nobody wanted to do the dirty work. Things were getting quite ridiculous recently. The shit had been continuously palmed off on Yngol and he had done every thing he had been asked to do without complaint. How can anyone prove themselves on this environment? They don’t want to send the genin out on tougher missions because they don’t have enough experience in the field, yet the genin are unable to get any experience in the field because they are stuck picking up trash, watching empty gates or investigating titty bars. The system was broken, but Yngol really didn’t find himself in any position to complain. He was making easy ryo by doing easy work. Patience was the key to success.

There was a strange sense of tranquility that came from being alone at night, with nothing but the stars as company. As expected, the gate was empty. No signs of any threats whatsoever. Yngol sat on a bench nearby the gate, lying back and gazing at the stars. It was probably wrong to slack off the way that he was, but the chances of anything sneaking by the gates were extremely slim, and besides, he wasn’t being paid enough to pay close attention to his job. He would instead take this mission as a night off, kicking back and relaxing. Taking a moment to soak the world in as it span around him. Some day his name would be written among the stars that he gazed upon. Some day, But not this day. To get to the top, one must start from the bottom, even if the bottom is spending a night watching an empty gate.

A good few hours had passed and the night was beginning to chill. The breeze nipped at Yngol’s skin, sending an unwelcome chill down his spine. He grumbled to himself. It was getting late, hours passed the time that any man should be awake at. Nothing was happening at the gate. Nobody entered, nobody exited. The rear gate was actually a rather useless part of the village. It was rarely used, ever. The road to it came from nowhere, the road out of it lead to nowhere. Nobody had any good reason to use the gate, so by Yngol’s logic, there was no need for him to be sat outside in the freezing cold staring into nothingness for hours on end, without anything to entertain himself with. Time seemed to slow down, the universe was taunting him. Seconds felt like minutes, minutes felt like hours. Yngol could almost see the world turning around him as he sat in silence, waiting for something, anything, to happen. It was almost at the point where he was hoping for a full scale invasion, just so he’d have something to pass the time with.

Something. A rustle in the difference from the bushes. Probably the wind. Yngol dismissed it as nothing. Hours of silence had gone by without a single thing happening. Yngol’s senses were probably heightened, his mind was playing tricks on him. Nothing was wrong at all. Yngol kicked back and relaxed, not worrying about the distant sounds. Again. Another rustle. Yngol took this one seriously. His mind was most definitely not acting up, something was at the gate. A lost child? Someone returning from a mission? Yngol honestly didn’t care at the moment, at least there was something to do. He picked himself off of the dirty bench and walked towards the gate, investigating whatever the cause of the noise was. “Anybody there? State your name and identification”. No answer. Something definitely wasn’t right. Yngol slowed down his pace, cautiously approaching the gate. Whatever was there obviously didn’t want it’s identity to be known. “I suggest you show yourself now, otherwise you will be met with force”. Yngol’s proposition was replied to with a growl. Wolves. Yngol retreated to the guard’s booth where he grabbed the only weapon he could find. A broom.

Light footsteps. Growls. Yngol was prepared for a fight fully. He looked outside, seeing two large wolves prowling around, not 10 feet away from him. He needed to act fast, if the wolves got into the inner city there would definitely be injuries, probably death. Women and children were in danger. Not that Yngol cared about any of them, but it was his ass that would get a hiding after everything is said and done. Physically, the wolves shouldn’t be any match for Yngol on their own, but they were pack animals with sharp teeth, and more frightening, coordinated attacks. One of them would have to be dispatched fast, otherwise the chances were pretty high that Yngol would be attacked from the back, without any real way to defend against it. Unfortunately, Yngol wasn’t exactly as speedy as they come, preferring brute strength over finesse. Not that it mattered too much, his head remained cool in the situation, confident in his abilities.

He charged out of the guard’s booth, his meager broomstick in hand, screaming a loud war cry in the hopes that wolves would scatter and run. Of course, the beasts showed heart, standing their ground and growling at Yngol. A fight was unavoidable. Yngol wouldn’t make the foolish mistake of waiting for his opponent to act, he was going to be the aggressor, and he was going to end the fight as soon as he possibly could. He was relishing the moment, his first real fight while on a mission, and the first bit of action he had experienced so far. Before any of the animals had a chance to do anything, Yngol brought the broomstick down onto the head of one of the wolves, mustering all the strength and power that he could. The beast let out a cry and dropped to the floor, unconscious, or dead, it didn’t matter, he would be finished later. For the time being, Yngol’s focus was on the other wolf, which had taken the moment that Yngol struck his partner down to lunge at the viking’s throat. Luckily, Yngol’s abilities didn’t only lie in his physical capabilities. Without even flinching, he formed a layer of steel over his throat where the beast had lunged at, smiling at the satisfying clank as the wolves teeth broke on his neck. Again, he swung his makeshift weapon at the wolf, cracking it in the side of the head.

The two wolves lay at Yngol’s feet, incapacitated. He couldn’t just let them go. They would be back, they were a danger as long as they were on the loose. Yngol knelt by the unconscious body of the first wolf, swiftly turning its neck, breaking the spinal cord and killing the creature instantly. He repeated the process for the other. Grabbing them both by their tails and dragging them back to his home. Before the mission he had been low on food, with his new acquisitions he would be able to eat comfortably for another couple of months. It had been a successful night on duty, and another mission out of the way. Yngol smiled in the hopes that he had finally proven his worth, and that the Mizukage would soon recognize his abilities
