Yngol

Yngol

D-rank

What an absolutely ridiculous job for a warrior. Yngol walked around the outskirts of Kirigakure muttering to himself the whole while. He should be out killing things, he should be out chopping limbs and crushing skulls, but no, instead he was assigned work suitable for a lap dog. “Start from the bottom” they said, “You have to crawl before you can walk” they said. Absolutely ridiculous. The academy has men vigorously training for years under the belief that when they graduate, they will be immediately starting. Leaving the village for espionage, taking down bandits, protecting the Daimyo, real missions suitable for real men. Not dirty work that they assign the low ranks because everybody else is too damn lazy, or ‘above the pay grade’ to do it.

Yngol didn’t even have an axe yet. No weapons, no combat, no nothing. It was quite sad really, a man who would call himself a Viking and a warrior, stuck doing the dirty work. Patrolling the city to make sure that nobody was doing anything wrong. What a ridiculous task. The worst part of it all was, even if he caught someone doing something, it was not in his power to punish them. No, the Mizukage wanted Yngol to run and snitch like a weakling. How degrading. Yngol couldn’t refuse the job, regardless. He was poor, he was without a much needed weapon, and any connections within the village. No matter how much he hated it, he knew that he had to get it done. And get it done he would, better than anyone can or will.

The city had been rather quiet for the day, nothing much was going on. The usual hustling and bustling of every day life. Street vendors were selling their wares, the beggars were lying on the floor with their pans, hoping for donations, the children were running and shouting like they always do; everything was normal for the day. In all honesty, Kiri probably didn’t even need a patrol. It was arguably one of the most powerful villages, with powerful shinobi that were feared wherever they went. Not many people really wanted to piss anybody off, and thus, the crime rate in the city was relatively low, and most time, the city was relatively calm and ordinary. However the Mizukage had ordered it, and so the job had to be done.

Yngol made sure to put an extra bit of effort into his patrol, making sure to ask a few passersby if they had seen any suspicious activity, and if there was anything that they wanted or needed to report. Of course the answer was always not, nothing ever went on in Kiri. He made sure to stop by the vendors and ask about any thieves, or hold ups. Nothing again. He kept an eye on the children running about to see if any of them were up to any mischief. Of course they weren’t. The beggars however, they are the omnipresent being in kiri. They see all, the remember all, and for a price, they will tell all. Yngol approached a man lying on a piece of cardboard next to a building. His hair was greasy and full of muck and dandruff, his face was covered with dirt and dry blood and his clothes were ragged and torn. Yngol almost felt sorry for him.

Clank. A couple of coins dropped into the man’s pan, and a wide smile spread across his face. “What do you need to know?”
“Anything” Yngol replied. He honestly didn’t much care for the going on of Kiri, he just needed something to report back with.
“A man with a red shirt stole an apple from the fruit and veg stall earlier today, its not much but it’s l know” The man’s voice was raspy and week, he probably didn’t have much longer left. The street was ruthless, and would claim his life soon enough. Perhaps the meager amount of money Yngol had paid him would help extend his miserable existence.

Yngol walked around some more, asking a few questions, figuring out exactly who this apple thief was. It wasn’t too hard, not many people wear red shirts, so it was easy to narrow down. Eventually he found someone who knew the man, and without much strife, was able to get a name. Another day, another easy mission complete, another step towards actually doing something that would make a difference. Yngol wasn’t satisfied with the day’s work, it was actually rather boring, but he would be satisfied with the payout he would get once he had reported back to his superiors.
